Imac's sudden crash, like power failure. starts again 30min later

Hi all,
my imac crashes sometimes very suddenly, like in a power failure. it doesn't force quit or shut down, it just goes like somebody pulled the plug.
it's usually possible to start it up again after 30minutes or an hour.
the plug and lead seem to be fine. i tested it on another mac.
the obvious suspicion would be overheating, but how can that be caused so suddenly (and how can i fix it)?
thanks for reading
i appreciate any advice

Get a temperature monitor.
There's a free widget, +iStat Nano,+ that a lot of folks use. There's also an inexpensive app, +Hardware Monitor,+ a much more comprehensive and customizable version, including a 7-day history with all sorts of fancy graphs, etc. There's a free version, called +Temperature Monitor,+ that may do enough, too: http://www.bresink.com/osx/HardwareMonitor.html
Having the history may help you figure out what's happening.

Look in /Users folder. You can go to System Preferences > Users & Groups, open the lock and "-" delete the account it created.
This is a problem whenever you use migration assistant after the initial install. The proper way to run Migration Assistant is in Setup Assistant when you first boot your Mac. I don't know why Apple isn't clearer about this issue.

  • Recovering from crash after power failure without having done backups

    Hi,
Is it possible to use RMAN or any other technique to recover an Oracle 9i db using just the archive and redo log files that Oracle automatically creates. My DB crashed and I have not done any backups ever. If it's possible, what is the easiest way?
Please note that I am not a DBA. Just a programmer using oracle.
The data is not critical but being able to recover it will save lots of time.
Please email replies to [email protected] is possible.

What are the real results of this crash? Are the datafiles lost? If not and nothing (disk) is damaged, such a power failure is the same as a 'shutdown abort'. After restart Oracle automatically performs a crash recovery and only uncommitted transactions are lost.
But it's not enough to have only logfiles (archived and online).

  • IMac not booting up after power failure

work around for at home/personal users which should work, the OS try's to retrieve user authentication Info from the previous logged on user so disconnecting the network cable or disabling or turning off the WiFi/ wireless should do the trick, just make sure the power is fully drained or have the power cable or battery disconnected for 25-30seconds to ensure the power is drained from the system. For all those Domain Admins/Users enable do not write on the users directory so the OS doesn't recognize a user account to try and retrieve info, if you perform this the OS will just create a temp user profile folder and delete it when theirs a power failure and not try to look for it after the power failure when booting up not causing to give you the gray boot up splash screen and go right into OS X, hope this helps and good luck!

  • My screen suddenly turned black and wont start again

I was using my computer as usual when the screen suddenly turned off. It wont start again! I'm a musician and work with my computer!! Today I have a show and wont be able to use it!! I'm desperate Please, can anybody help!!
    Thanks a lot!!!

It sounds like you had a hardware failure. You can try doing a SMC reset, read the instructions carefully though as they cover multiple models of Macs. If that doesn't help I think it's time to contact a AASP. The AASP site is for the US, you will need to find one in Brazil though.
    Good luck!

  • Indesign CS6 crashed, can't be started again (missing required fonts, cmap files). Reinstalled -- doesnt work. help?

    hi,
my indesign CS6 worked perfectly until yesterday afternoon, when it suddenly crashed and wont open again. all it says is "There are required system fonts or cmap files missing. reinstall indesign". Did that, with the cc cleaner, but that doesnt work!
working on windows 7, sp1 -- never had any problems.
all i can find in other forums is about the cs2, which is fairly outdated. why does this happen?! all my other programs from the master collection work fine!

ok, after a quite frustrating weekend the problem seems to have solved itself. what i did (for future requests):
    - downloaded cs6 master collection (since i had my cds not with me)
    - deinstalled old install
    - wiped the system with the adobe cc cleaner tool to get everything off
    - restart
    - install cs6
    - same error. no chance of doing anything.
i then installed a trial version on another computer to at least render my pdf. i then tried something new: i put the cmap & fonts (in C:/Programs/Common Files/Adobe/PDFL) from the working pc on a usb drive. when i "backed up" my PDFL Folder on my main pc into a zip (just in case), i gave indesign another try. it then started up -- since it was the first time a bit slower than usual, but it's back on track.

  • Dead iMac G3 suddenly won't power on. PRAM battery or Power Supply?

iMac G3 350 slot load USB only running 10.4.11
    i love this little guy.
it's been running almost non stop for a few years as a file server... only restarted maybe a dozen times during that period. i can't remember ever shutting it down.
i had to move it recently. might have been unplugged from a wall socket for a minute or so. plugged it back in but left it powered off for a few days.
went to turn it on recently and nothing. not a chime, not a light, not a click or hard drive spin-up. zero. pushed the PMU reset button once. still nothing. i've taken the PRAM battery out for now.
my question is this: is it possible the power supply is dead and a PRAM battery will not fix the iMac? is there any way to tell before spending money on a new battery i may not need?
    thanks!

    Hello Nicholas,
I recently retired my hard working 350 slot so I know how great the computer can be.
Unplugging for a moment should not have affected the battery.
I would respectfully suggest you start with the simple things such as:
    1. - Make certain the power source is not on a switch and that it is good
    2. - Be certain the power chord is fully seated in the back of the computer and wall socket.
    3. - If trying to start from the keyboard button, try using the button on the face of the computer
perhaps the keyboard is not fully plugged into the usb port.
I always like to start with the simple things when I have a problem.
Now that the battery is removed it could cause a bit of a problem. I think I would install the battery
and check the above mentioned ideas. If still no power, then I would replace the battery.
It doesn;t seem logical that the power supply would just go as a result of the board.
I would try to get the computer up and running.
One last tip.......when my slot load was starting to go it acted odd. I would let the computer sit for a day or two and it would then start. It was irratic at best but the old computer allowed me a few last
boots so that I could back up to my external.
It is a great computer and sounds like it served you well it deserves a few chances.
I hope you replace the battery, plug and it re-starts. Keep it plugged in once the battery is replaced/returned .....Best of Luck Jim

  • IMac won't boot after power failure during 10.5.6 update

    Help!
Tried to update last night and at something like 80% install, we had a power cut. iMac won't boot at all now - get to a grey screen which tells me to restart. Don't have a wired keyboard. If I did - what are the steps to get this working again.
I believe I have a good backup, but don't want to risk as all the family photos are on the iMac.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the help, but can't even get to a screen where I could type anything! I know I'm being dumb here.

My iMac wont boot or respond in any way after I experienced a brief power outage. Now it can't seem to switch on at all even after attempting the different resets I've read on other discussions. • IMac 27" 2011 - shuts down and wont start again

    Hi everybody
I got my new iMac 27" intel i7 16 GB kingston ram for about a moth ago and worked perfectly until now.
Suddently it shuts down and when I tried to turn it on again, there was no response. I then waited about 30 minutes and tried again and it turned on. I thought it might be a one time accident, but 10 minutes later it shut down again.
When it shut down the first time it has been turned on for about 2 hours and I wasn't doing heavy work, just some surfing.
Anyone else who has experienced this and found i solution for whats causing this?
Are the any logfiles I can investigate to see what might happend?
    Regards

As Roger suggests, RAM is likely your problem. Have a look at this long thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2473276
Another workround is to try running on 12gb of the Kingston RAM and see if that solves the problem.
It seems that there is an issue with some makes of RAM and I believe that changing to Samsung RAM seems to fix things.

  • ITunes Won't Start, Popped Up Out of the Blue, Then Crashes and Won't Start Again.

I was listening to iTunes Radio on my laptop and I didn't notice it had stopped. I tried to reopen but it wouldn't so I restarted my laptop which used to work, but now it will not open at all. I have tried the REPAIR option, I have tried to uninstall and reinstall several times. I have also done the same thing with Quicktime player. I have read all the other post and tried what they suggested  and none have helped. I have called apple support and she had me do the same thing I had already done. Is there anyone that can help me it's rather upsetting for me to have spent money on the 5th generation iPod and not be able to upload music or anything. I dont know if it matter but I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop on Windows 7.

Gray screen issue with stuck status bar.
Could be two things, a failed firmware update or a automatic "Safe Mode" kicked in while booting and is attempting to repair the drive of corruption and it got stuck.
She can't find her discs to boot from disc.  She has a 15" MacBook Pro, about three years old.
I have a install dvd from an early 2009 macbook.
Can I install the operating system and run disc utility to see if it can be repaired?
Nope, your disk is machine hardware driver specific if it's anything other than white with a Snow Leopard on the front.
Her machine might have came with 10.6.3 or later, which the 10.6.3 white retail disk won't work.
If it originally came with 10.6.2 or earlier, then the 10.6.3 white retail disks can be used.
Well your going to have to call Apple via phone (only) and talk to them, perhaps they can find out something about the machine that tells them what 10.6 disks to send her.
No use going on until then.
However if you have a Firewire cable to the two Mac's, then hold T boot the sick Mac, then boot the good Mac, may able to grab files off the machine as it's hard drive appears on the desktop..

  • G5 Power failure during start up and wake

I have an early G5 20" non-iSight iMac that has a power problem that is steadily getting worse.
As Apple support has expired and can't be extended, I'm at a loss how to resolve this.
    Description.
The problem first started as intermittent during wake up from sleep (power light pulsing). I'd move the mouse or tap the keyboard to wake the iMac and I'd hear the disk just start to spin up followed by a sharp 'pop/click' like the power cord had been pulled, and it would be powered off needing the power button to be pressed to restart from scratch.
Now the problem has worsened in that occasionally I will find the iMac has completely powered down during sleep. When I restart it can take up to 6 or more attempts to get to the point where I can use it. There's a sequence of restarts needed, each starting from pushing the power button, and then ending during the starting sequence with a 'pop/click' as the power suddenly shuts off. Each time the start up will progress a little further than the previous attempt until eventually it finishes building the desk top after login and I can operate normally until the next time I find it powered off after a few hours of non-use. The power failure starts initially from just after the welcome chime, and progresses to maybe 5 or 6 times later to during the desk top build after log-in. However, once logged in and operating the iMac behaves as normal, switching users, log-out and login, screen save and wake from screen save etc are all as I'd expect. I've not (yet at least) had any sudden power failures during normal operation.
The serial number of the iMac falls within the Sept 05 Repair Extension Program serial number range (not EMC 2056 though), but when I spoke to Apple Support they said that the lack of random behaviour meant that the problem I'm having is not related and so would not be covered by this program.
So I'm kinda stuck with a problem that is annoying when it occurs, which is daily at the moment, although it's been this bad a few weeks back and then was fine (iMac left switched on for 2 to 3 weeks without a problem) until we had a power cut earlier this week, and it's started again.
I've searched through the forums and while I could find plenty of references to 'Sudden Power Loss' none seemed to be as predictable and similar to this one.
    Suggestions and ideas welcome. Thanks.

i am having a similiar issue. I have the same exact computer (iMac G5, non-isight) and it stays on for 30 mins, hour, 3 hours and shuts off. Upon starting up, sometimes it doesn't make it to the login screen before shutting down again. I have downloaded heat temp monitor programs and it seems to get to about 70 degrees celcius sometimes. Upon restarting, I get the "report problem to apple" screen with this information. I have tried to restart the power supply too.

  • Does iMac shutdown nicely on power failure?

I have heard that the iMac 5K 2014 shuts down automatically on detecting mains power fluctuation. Great if this shuts down the 128GB SSD in an orderly fashion. If not I may have to get a UPS, though one I can afford could be unreliable! How paranoid should I be about this?
I do have Time Machine on. Loss of my unsaved data is an acceptable risk, and not what I am concerned about here: I am worried about maintaining iMac system integrity.
So, can someone please enlighten me about automatic shutdown of the iMac?

    Tim Durbridge wrote:
    That's reassuring.
But does the iMac shut down automatically on power failure?
Does that protect the system well enough for practical purposes?
Would that be why you operate a computer without a UPS?
The iMac does not have an internal battery or UPS. It will NOT shut down automatically or otherwise when power is lost. If you lose the mains the computer immediately stops working and serious corruption can and has indeed happened. Think about what you said. You lose main power to the machine. It has no power of its own, no internal reserve supply (and I know of no personal computer that does). It may or may not recover when power is restored and it depends on what was going on at the time the power failed.
If data loss or corruption is is unacceptable then a UPS is a must have. A UPS will allow the machine to shut down properly. OS X has  built-in UPS power management software. You can set the computer to properly shut down when the UPS reaches say 20% reserve power.
Buy the best UPS you can possibly afford.

  • Restore/Repair Jabberd / iChat server after power failure

    SLS 10.6.1 on Mac Mini.
I've had this happen twice, but in different ways. We've had some storms come through and knock the power out recently. Everything seems to come back online fine, except for iChat server (jabberd of course). The first time, I was getting errors about c2s and sm not being able to connect to, well, itself. I was never able to actually fix those, I have to reinstall the whole system.
This time I'm getting similar errors where the system isn't talking to itself properly. Here is the log from clicking "Start iChat" to trying to connect from client.

This is what it does when I try to connect from a client. The client just keeps getting a username/password prompts over and over. (12.34.56.78 is of course a made up IP) It will do this repeatedly with a different port number, going higher and higher. In some cases it will add "is being rate limited" This will just loop and loop until I shut iChat and Push Notifications down.

Is all of that supposed to bind to 127.0.0.1? Another posting on here said to try and reinstall just the serveressentials.pkg from the disc. I tried that on a previous install and it didn't seem to do anything. Is there any kind of repair or restore script that can be run in situations like power failures where the thing doesn't shut down gracefully? jabberd seems pretty delicate.
    Thanks in advance

It was working perfect before two things - power outage, and I had turned on the Firewall service because I wanted to see how it worked, but it's turned off and not even an active service.
Thanks in advance for the attempt!
