IMac says bought DVD is empty

Hi everybody,
I have a problem with my DVD drive. If I insert a bought DVD (mostly movies) my iMac says on most discs: "Disc is empty" and asks if I want to open it with finder. On other discs, the Mac recognizes that it is a DVD and what's its title but does not play the disc.
The DVDs work fine with my MacBookPro or DVD-Players.
I use a:
- late 2007 Intel-based iMac
- Mac OS 10.6.7
- OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A, Firmware: 1AHM
Do you have any ideas what's the problem and how to solve it? I am afraid the Drive is defect.
Best regards

Hi there,
This is really not answer you want to hear. I have 5 Macs and noticed long time ago that same DVD or CD will not be recognized at all in some of them. Sometimes re-loading same disc helps but sometimes not. It is annoying.

Put the DVD back in your Windows system and make sure the disk is finalized.  Then it should be readable on your Mac.

  • The DVD player doesn't play. It says the DVD is empty and asks if I want to burn.

I have tried to play several different movies with no luck.  The player spins and acts like it is going to work and then gives me a screen asking me if I want to burn the DVD because it is empty (which I know it isn't).  Any suggestions as to where I even start looking in regards as to how to fix the problem without having to take the laptop somewhere?  I am not a techy person at all so "plain English" answers please!

Try authorize this computer in the store menu in Itunes.  This worked for me. It seems that this is an account problem on iTunes.

  • Imac 27" bought Jan 2011 running 10.6.4

Having a back up of my valued files and programmes I decided to do a clean install on this mac (I was unhappy with my sims 3 game and wanted to start afresh) so inserted my install dvd which promptly got eaten by the superdrive with lots of grungy noises - couldn't eject disk so went online to discover eject disk solutions - ended up (after various combs of start up keys) booting into windows on windows 7 bootcamp then the disk ejected itself severely scarred with spiral scratches. I then bought an external dvd drive (Samsung) and tried again could not load install DVD - by this time I couldnt get past grey screen on Mac but could boot to windows (mac was trying to boot into safe mode due to various key combo's I tried to eject disk) - next I try single user commands carefully and Mac HD cannot be repaired after 3 attempts -next I phone apple support and arrange for a replacement install DVD - it arrives and imac will not boot from it -I later discover it is OS 10.6.3 whereas my original install DVD (the badly scratched one is 10.6.4) which I told them! then I borrow a good firewire cable and start troubled 27 inch in target mode and connect to older 2007 aluminium imac - load install dvd on old imac reboot to disk and erase vol on troubled 27' then install 10.6.3 on target drive phew....well it just sits there with the apple logo despite no disk errors or permission errors - tried restarting 27" with install dvd just spins a few times and hangs -I've been using macs as a happy home since 1999 and never had a prob like this I cant resolve....suggestions please and please read everything I tried before replying with obvious - yes I reset everything I could yes I tried every fsck I could....

Alright. I finally got 10.6.4 installed. I ended up reinstalling Snow Leopard from the install disk like originally planned. The problem was that when Apple replaced my hard drive, they preinstalled a Mac Mini version of Snow Leopard on to it which was up to date for that piece of hardware and is why software update didn't catch the update. However, since I have an iMac, it got confused because it was running a Mac Mini version of OS X, thus not letting me install 10.6.4. After I wiped the drive and installed from the disk, I ran software update, and, sure enough, the 10.6.4 update was there. I thought I would just share my findings for everyone out there with the same problem. And thank you baltwo for all of your help. I appreciate it.

Replaced 2 ink cartridges in hp 7280 but still says both cartridges are empty and will not print from PC, but it will copy fine.  When I try to print I get a error box that says "Ink cartridges empty - replace black and yellow ink cartridges to continue."  They are brand new - just bought them - expiration date Sep 2015.  Have tried rebooting and disconnecting and reconnecting everything.  Same error, but it still will do color copies fine - all cartridges are working.  Help?!

    Hi tfmartin,
I understand you have a Photosmart C7280 that you are unable to print to from your computer. I'm sorry to hear about this, but I will certainly do my best to assist you in resolving this issue.
Before I can offer any suggestions I do need to know which version of Windows or Mac that you're using and how the printer is connected (wireless or USB). Once I have that information I should be able to help you better. In the meantime, if you're using Windows, please download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor to see if it can assist with the issue at hand

  • My iMac says I have 10.6.8 operating system now. Problem is I do not know if that is 'Lion' or 'Snow Leopard' ... and I wish to upgrade to 'Mountain Lion'

My iMac says I have 10.6.8 operating system now. Problem is I do not know if that is 'Lion' or 'Snow Leopard' ... and I wish to upgrade to 'Mountain Lion'

    That is Snow Leopard.
Upgrading to Snow Leopard, Lion, or Mountain Lion
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will receive physical media - DVD - by mail.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
Before upgrading check that you computer meets the minimum requirements:
    Snow Leopard General requirements
      1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
      2. 1GB of memory
      3. 5GB of available disk space
      4. DVD drive for installation
      5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may
          apply.
      6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
First, you need to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 as stated above.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
Before upgrading check that you computer meets the minimum requirements:
    Lion System Requirements
      1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or
          Xeon processor
      2. 2GB of memory
      3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
      4. 7GB of available space
      5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
      1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
      2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
      3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
      4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
      5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
      6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
      7. Xserve (Early 2009)
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps - App compatibility and feature support for OS X & iOS.
Am I eligible for the free upgrade?
See Apple - Free OS X Mountain Lion upgrade Program.

  • IMac will play DVDs but not CDs

My 2009 iMac will play DVDs but not CDs (bought music CDs and burnt CDs). The last time I tried (successfully) was December 2013. Can anyone help?

Start a new topic and don't hijack this one.  You're problem is different from the OPs. When you start the new topic give your system version, iMac year and model and what type of CDs you can't read, i.e. commercial or those you created yourself.  Also if you can read DVDs.

  • Imac and Samsung DVD players

Don't know if this is the right forum.
Taked to tech support IMAC and APPLE TV.
Must have been a bad day for support. I asked her if Samsung and Imac had any support issues ( I am trying to build a new Home Theater.) She just kept asking me questions that put me into a corner each time I asked if I should buy a Samsung BD- C7500 DVD player to play with my IMAC 27" and Apple TV, and she would not give me a straight answer......
If anyone is in need of similar information, here is a tidbit I found on Amazon reviews section:
1.0 out of 5 stars A cautionary tale for Macintosh users, May 1, 2010
By xo1rider "Customer service critic" (Fremont, Ca) - See all my reviews
    Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Samsung BD-C6500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player (Electronics)
I suspect this is a fantastic, five star blu-ray player if you're a PC user but from my perspective as a Macintosh user I just wasted a couple hours of time that I'll never get back.
If I'd googled BD-C6500, Macintosh and Airport I could have saved my self a ton of frustration and time by ordering something else. Sure, you can spend some time figuring out a hack to make this thing work if you really have to, but I don't have to. There are other products out there that don't treat Mac users like red headed step-children.
Before I go any further let me say that as usual Amazon was fantastic when it came to the ordering process, the price, the packaging and delivery were just what you'd expect from Amazon, not to mention the ease of returns. That's why I buy from Amazon!
The initial set up went swimmingly until I came to the WiFi network hookup. Let me say first that I have a very strong WiFi network in my house using the ever reliable Apple Airport Extreme. In addition I have a wireless Cannon printer that set up on the first try so I'm no stranger to non-Apple wireless devices. When I got to the WiFi set up on the Samsung I hit a dead end. It was Friday night and Samsung customer support is a Monday through Friday business hour operation. That in it self is weak, they do have 24/7 online chat and I used that much to my frustration. The online chat is slow, I think the person on the other end must have had multiple chats going based on the response time to each of my entries.
The first Macintosh roadblock came when tech support wanted me to upgrade the firmware, since I could not connect to Samsung via the blu-ray player I needed to download a 67 MB file onto a USB flash drive, no problem I had the drive and I have a fast internet connection. Turns out I needed to format the USB device in Windows. O.K. so I've got an Intel Mac and a copy of Windows XP. I just fired up my trusty VMware fusion and took care of that little problem. At this point I was getting the idea that Samsung was not Mac friendly. Upgrading the firmware did not help and the support person on the chat could only tell me to phone back on Monday.
The Samsung has a feature called PC Share, allows you to stream from your computer to the blu-ray player. That was one of the reasons I choose this model - guess what? You've got to use Windows to utilize this feature. That sealed the deal for me, as soon as I finish this review I'm packing up the Samsung and shipping it back to Amazon. Combined with the lack of proper customer support, the anti-Macintosh attitude of Samsung and the warnings that I probably would not be able to play Avatar on this machine I've had enough.
*Here's an update a couple of hours later. I packed up the Samsung and sent ti back to Amazon, the did some more research and purchased an LG BD570. I will be out of town for a while so went to Best Buy and picked it up. Literally 15 minutes after walking in the front door the unit was linked to my WiFi network, five minutes later I was listening to Pandora Radio and a couple minutes later installed the latest firmware via the WiFi. Lesson learned, if you've got a Macintosh avoid Samsung.
Still don't have a definitive answer but maybe I'll get there.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
We are just end users here!
Quoting us long reviews is useless. How do you want to integrate the DVD Player in the mix?
Is there anything wrong with your iMacs built-in DVD player?
Are you able to rent via Apple Store and Netflix all the Movies you want?
Is the iMac in the same room as your TV?

  • After using iDVD, can my iMac burn a DVD ?

After using iDVD, can my iMac burn a DVD ?
I mean how do I know whether my disk drive can write/burn DVD ?
Mine is a 24" iMac bought some 5 months ago.
    Thanks

Assuming your mac has at least 25 GB's of available hard drive space on the boot volume and an S-Drive as opposed to a combo drive; the latter only reads dvd's while the former both reads and writes to dvd, then you should be able to, yes.
But follow the iMovie> iDvd Tutorial/s first.
