IMac screen burn

I was 3D rendering something since Friday and I got to my iMac (one of the new ones - yes, the ones that keep freezing) and I was surprised the machine hadn't gone to sleep, but the animation had rendered and all was fine until I noticed that I've now got screen burn where the bright white wireframe lines of the 3D model have now created slight ghosting of the screen where they've been.
I wasn't aware that flat screens could get screen burn... will they fade or am I stuck with them now?

Having come back to the machine after a few hours, the effects definitely seem to have faded. I'll try leaving the "flurry" screensaver on when I leave the office tonight and see if that helps (much the same as the iTunes visualiser).

Early 2008 iMac screen burn

I have an early 2008 24" iMac which has been our faithful family computer. It started slowing down quite a bit so we bought a new one for home. I then replaced the existing HD with an OWC SSD. It helped immensely, like having a new computer.
Brought it to the office, upgraded OS to Yosemite, running Parallels and Windows 8. Suddenly I have screen burn. Never had this problem before upgrades. I've only had it at the office for the past 1 week.
Now I have to admit, I don't think she's gone into sleep mode at night so I need to check the settings. But I can't believe this happened so quickly. Is there anything I can do to fix the problem or is my screen irreparably damaged? By the way, I tried Jscreenfix without success.

IMac issues: Overheating, Software Crashing, Screen Burn

My 24" iMac, early 2008 model has been experiencing problems that have gotten progressively worse over the past three months. The iMac began to heat up more than usual, and it's gotten hotter progressively over that course. The iMac is almost unusable after thirty minutes unless the screen brightness is turned down as low as possible. Software crashes, everything from advanced programs such as the Adobe suite, and the Chrome web browser which is not supposed to tax the memory very much, if at all. I have 4 gigs of RAM installed, and I believe the issue is heat related. As a sidenote, if the iMac gets hot enough, there is screen burn when moving application windows, and they disappear only after 10 minutes in sleep mode.
In my mind, all of this is abnormal, and earlier today I tok my iMac to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store, and the Genius didn't spend five minutes diagnosing my problems likely because there was a long line of people waiting. All he told me was to go home and run Activity Monitor and Disk Utility to see if there's a problem, and also to reinstall the operating system and the applications that crash. I've tried that, and as expected it didn't do anything, and I'm wondering if anyone has insight that could be of use, and if maybe I should send my iMac to AppleCare for them to look at it. Any help would be greatly appreciated appreciated.

Chad, very sorry to hear of your problems.
If your Mac is still under warranty (sounds like it might be) I'd suggest the following.
Call Apple, and politely request they send a warranty tech to your location to address the issue.
Ask that the tech come prepared to replace your Mac if they are unable to fix it.
Although I am not an expert, this doesn't sound like a problem you could have caused. If you didn't break it, you shouldn't have to be involved in fixing it. You paid good money for a product, and you deserve to have it.
Again, I'm assuming you're still under warranty.

Weird Screen Burn (?) on iMac 24inch

I know there are dozens of threads about screen burn and uneven displays but I think my iMac has conjured up a new problem.
Recently i've noticed a number of 'rays' beaming down from the top of the display. I can't imagine how this would be screen burn as nothing fits the pattern burned. There are also a few 'blobs' around the screen that are noticeably darker.
Have tried cleaning the screen and have turned it off for 2days to rest it. Both to no avail.
It's getting very distracting/irritating and, I believe, progressively worse ;

Its a 24inch white imac 2.16 and is under a year old.

I would like to add my name to list of screen problems as well. just in the last few weeks my iMac 24" screen (white) has had the same problems with 'rays' beaming down from the top of the display. There are also a few 'blobs' around the screen that are noticeably darker. Exactly as 'Deci' has pictured in his first post. and I am afraid it is going to get worse.
so far this forum hasn't been any help, it is the white iMac so the screen cannot be removed to be cleaned (if it is in fact dirt), and it can't be cleaned on the front because the 'rays' are behind the screen.
It is one of the original iMac's and I have had a for almost two years with no problems until this recently started happening, and it's very distracting/frustrating as I am a graphic designer and use my iMac for work.
any solution to this from anyone, (Apple?!) on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

IMac mid 2007 screen burn in

I have a mid 2007 imac 24 inch. Recently i noticed that there was some kind of screen burn in. It is not the regular screen burn in since it disapears slightly when i turn it of for about an hour. Does anyone else has the same problem and does anyone know a solution.

Screen burn on my new imac?

I've read that LCD monitors can't get screen burn, but I sure see some faint images of where icons are/were on my desktop. I'm not happy about this. I just purchased this intel imac in November. I do have apple care but not pleased about losing the computer for a week or more. Is there anything to try?

Is there a fix for my imac monitor burning highlights into blue shapes on my screen?

Whenever I leave an image or window open on my imac for longer than 5 minutes the white boxes or white in the images burn a blue shape onto my screen. It is apparent in every program and finder, but overly so in photoshop. Is there a fix for this or do I need to take my computer in? I've tried changing my display settings to AdobeRGB 1998 and turning down the brightness but neither fixed it.

Image persistence on LCDs is not permanent like screen burn on CRTs.

Personally I use a Hot Corner to Sleep my displays when I get up or when I'm not looking something. I also have the Display Sleep timer set to 10 minutes, just in case I get up and forget to use the Hot Corner.

IMac screen dead. LCD burned out.

iMac screen is dead. Tech says the LCD burned out. He said that I could connect it to a tv, via mini DVI to VGA; VGA to tv. I get the Leopard screen on the tv, but no tool bars, top or bottom. Can't turn extended screen mode off, due to black screen on computer. Tried F7, Command F7 and Command F1, none work. Any new suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Do you know if the LCD screen has a bad backlight, or is the screen data drive bad? If it's just the backlight, shine a strong light on the screen, you should be able to see everything, just dim. I can estimate clicking on the Apple menu, then with a strong flashlight, I can easily see the dropdown menu to pick the System Preferences, and then to Displays and mirroring.
Perhaps you can tell us the exact model of iMac you have. We can devine that it's likely an Intel iMac with mini-DVi, but often folks are wrong about their details. Details can make all the difference in figuring out something you can do.

IMac 24" Screen Burn-in When Using iDVD

I had a 1.5 hr long video that burned using iDVD. I found that if I use iDVD the screensaver will NEVER turn on. So, when the iDVD finished I found that a bit of screen burn-in is stuck on my screen.
Seeing that this is an LCD I thought it was true that LCD's couldn't have burn-in like CRT's could but I'm guessing I'm mistaken on that.
Does anyone know how I can fix the burn-in and also how to get the screensaver to work with iDVD so it doesn't happen again?

Bringing this up from the almost dead....
...to setup a Hot Corner to sleep the display go to: System Preference > Expose & Spaces > Expose and in the Active Screen Corners section setup any corner you would like to sleep the display. Then any time you leave with a job running, just park the mouse pointer in that corner and sleep the display until you return.
That's fine and dandy for most things, but does not address the issue brought up by the initial poster. When running iDVD the screen will not blank nor will the screen saver start. If you have a hot corner to blank the screen and you move your mouse to the hot corner the screen will stay blanked for maybe 10 seconds before it unblanks. This is true using the iDVD that came with iLife '08. I haven't tried any others.
It seems that iDVD overrides the users sleep/blanking preference. That makes sense if you are watching something. It makes no sense during the 3+ hours it takes me to render a DVD disk image (I'm not burning a disk at this time).

New iMac 27 experiencing screen burn

I noticed when using Adobe CS6 Creative Suite that I am having "screen burn" where I can clearly see whatever I was working on still visible after I close the file or switch to a new one. The default on CS6 seemed to switch to a "gray" work area instead of the "white" work area that i have been so use to - if this switch did not occur I probably would not of noticed it to much. But now that I see it, it's hard to not see it all the time.
My fear is that this is going to get worse, and I have heard of this issue occuring. Anybody have experience with this? Should I be concerned of this being a continuing and damaging issue in the long run?

My LCD screen burned out. I have it connected to a tv now, but can't get the menu bar or the function bars to show up. Please help!

My LCD Screen burned out, but the computer still works. I currently have it connected to an HDTV via, Mini DVI to VGA, VGA to VGA on the tv. Problem is, I can't get the function bar (maybe not the right term) or the bar at the bottom with all my programs on it. I get my screen saver and have managed to drag (by sheer luck since I can't see anything on my iMac screen) some of my pics I had on my desktop over, but nothing else. Please help!

for now your tv is an extended screen for your imac not a miror , so you can not see menue barre on top of screen

Screen burn

Hey guys. recently bought the new 27 inch imac and have been having issues with screen burn. for example, the web browser windo, although I haven't been on for long, seems burned onto the screen and I can see it on, let's say the dark background of Photoshop. Anybody else have this issue and any idea how to reseolve it?

I guess most of you, like me with my 2012 iMac 24-inch, have the burn-in issue and it is on the left side of the display. You may have noticed that as the computer heats up it extends down vertically.
Put your hands on the back of your Mac, upper left and right. Which is hotter?
Here is a fix everyone. The problem is heat. I guess North America is a bit colder than an average Aussie summer.
Download fan control and set it to run on startup. Set the three fans to 2500/2200/2200 and tweak after that to get your temp down to around 41°C/105°F and the ghosting issue will fade away.

Screen Burn-In - Shows When Hot (Anyone Else????)

Hello All,
Here is my situation:
I have an iMac G5 17-inch (rev. A) 1.8 GHz. I have been using it to record my 8-Track tapes, records, cassette tapes, etc. onto my hard drive to be converted to Audio CD.
I have been using both Audacity and Amadeus to record the audio into the computer. Both have been working great.
I used Amadeus quite heavily for the first few days, and noticed that the window image of the Amadeus window would "burn-in" to the LCD screen of my iMac G5's monitor.
This first occurred after only 4 or 5 hours of intensive recording and editing. All recording is being done through the iMac G5's audio input port.
The image of the window from the Audacity program remains visible as a "ghost" image on my screen. It is extremely noticeable when the computer is hot. And, not visible at all after the computer has cooled-down.
The image is noticeable even during a re-start (while the timing ring is displayed), and during start-up.
I even booted from the original factory install DVD, and it is visible there.
These are not just lines. You can actually see the buttons that are in the bar at the top of the finder window (the active screen in Amadeus), and even the defined outline of the other active windows.
These are clearly "ghost" images of the screen that was visible while I was working.
So, I have moved to using Audacity to see what would happen. And, I can see the same remnants from it being left behind.
At this point, I have several ghost images (outlines of many previous sessions) visible on the screen.
I have already had my local service provider look at the computer. He has ordered a replacement logic-board and video screen. He thinks that something is getting stuck in my video controller. While he was here, we hooked-up another video screen (as a mirrored image), and the defect does not appear on the external screen.
So, it appears to me as though the problem is the screen itself.
I have tried turning the machine off, resetting the PRAM, pressing the SMU reset button, etc. And, no change.
The lines do go away after the machine has been off, in sleep mode, or with the screen in sleep mode for a while. But, they return as soon as I have used the computer for a long time. And, new ones show up every time I record and edit additional music albums for a couple hours.
At this point, I am wondering if anyone else has recorded this much audio into their computer using Amadeus. And, if so, do you have these problems.
So far, I have recorded in about 20 albums (nearly 20 hours of music) in this fashion. This has been done in 4 to 5 hour sessions.
My thought, is that perhaps the iMac G5 cannot handle 5 hours of solid audio recording and editing at one time. And, perhaps this has caused damage to the screen. Anyone have any thoughts here?
My main concern is that I don't want this to be an on-going problem that happens every time I record and edit new music into the computer. Especially after I have the new screen installed.
I am hopeful that this is a one-time defect. And, that I won't experience this problem after the new parts are installed. But, if this is something that just happens every time the machine gets really, really, really, hot. Then, I may have to abandon the idea of recording all my music to CD.
Let me know your thoughts and personal experience here.
The computer tech from Apple insisted that screen-burn was impossible. But, he conceded that seeing is believing.
I just don't want it to happen again with the new parts.
Hopefully, someone here has put their iMac G5 through the exact same use (with the same programs), and can confirm that my experience is unique.
So far, the Apple service tech has been great. No complaints there. I just don't want to replace my video display every time I record records and tapes into the computer.
By the way, I did look, and there are no swollen capacitors.

The problem, is that in my case the image would burn-in permanently within an hour or two of using the system.
So, the energy settings wouldn't really have helped my particular problem.
It's hard to be productive when you are watching the screen-saver or have the screen off.
I would find that in addition to the existing images that were burned-in, that new burn-ins would happen while I was actively using the computer.
Any part of the screen that didn't change for a while would burn-in. So, the button bar, for example would become a permanent image.
Yes, I could move things on the screen constantly. But, it would make being productive pretty hard if I spent all my time trying to prevent screen-burn.
In the case that it was an inactive system with images being burned-in, then your suggestions would be very useful.
Unfortunately, the problem I had was that the images would burn-in even while using the computer.
I did get a new screen from Apple though. And the new one looks and works great.
So, it must have just been a defect in my original screen that caused the problem.

If you have any problems with images getting stuck or burned-in, I would contact Apple and just have them replace it. I'd prefer to get it fixed during the warranty than to try to limp it by.
In my situation, the replacement LCD even lowered my temperatures back down to normal. So, there were most likely a lot of problems with that LCD panel.
Anyway, it's nice to have a clean and clear screen again. The old one was getting quite annoying.

New iMac: Screen Issues and Noisy Hard Drive

I'm writing regarding my new 27" iMac which I purchased just under a week ago (spec: 3.1GHz Intel Core i5, 1TB HDD, 4GB RAM).
When I got my iMac home and unboxed it, all was fine, however once I had began to install some applications and use them, I noticed an unusual issue with the screen. I had a Skype window open on the left hand side of my screen, with an ongoing chat, Obviously, the chat 'stream' was moving, but the menu items on the far left remained the same. The iMac had been on for about 10mins, with the Skype window open for the same duration. After which, I opened iPhoto, and made it full screen, filling my screen with a dark grey background. I could still see the outline of the text from my Skype window through the iPhoto window. Thinking the window may have been semi-transparent, I closed the Skype window, however when I re-fullscreened iPhoto, the test was still there, as if it was burnt into the screen.
I understand the concept of screen burn, but surely this shouldn't happen after just 10mins? It's nothing permanent, as it fades away again within another 5mins or so, but it is annoying knowing that I can't leave a window open for very long without worrying I will have text burnt into my screen for a period of time. As a graphic designer, I could be working on images that are dark, and likewise, I don't want to see remains of my chat or emails over the top of my design work.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is this an issue that can be repaired by myself (eg. installing a firmware update, although I have all the latest updates from Software Update)? Or should I just return my iMac to the store and get them to look at it? I'm worried that if I take it back, they may fail to see the issue, as the lighing is a lot different in the store to at home.
The other issue I am experiencing is I have a very noisy hard drive, that seems to click and make a grumbling noise rather a lot. Obviously at times when the computer is working hard, this is to be expected (I think), although most of the time it is grumbling away whilst I'm just browsing in Safari with one tab open.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, taken it back and has a successful replacement? I've read that it could be to do with Mac OS X Lion, because people have reported that their hard drive ran silently on Snow Leopard but has got noisier with Lion. Should I wait for a Lion update before returning it? Other than the issues above, everything is fine.

Today, I returned my iMac to the Apple Premium Resellers where I purchased it. The helpful chap there looked at my screen and acknowledged the issue, before giving me a brand new iMac.
My previous model came with Snow Leopard pre-installed, which I upgraded to Lion. This new, second iMac is a relatively new one as it has Lion pre-installed. Feeling hopeful, I've just arrived home and unpackaged my new computer.
The result? EXACTLY the same issue. My Twitter window on the far left of my display has been open for no longer than about 7 or 8 mins, and I can clearly see the display pictures from my follwees burnt into the screen when I full screen a dark app like Snow Leopard.
I'm wondering whether this is a Lion issue? Should I wait for a software update before returning it again? It's not something that's going to be annoying on a day-to-day basis, but now that I know it's doing it, I can't help but keep checking when I open iPhoto.
PEOPLE WITH NEW 27" iMAC's: Would you please perform the following test for me and let me know the results?
1. Open up a white backgrounded application, such as Twitter, Skype, or Safari.
2. Leave it on screen (anywhere, but far left seems to be worst) for about 5 to 10mins.
3. Open up iPhoto with it's grey full screen background, or set your wallpaper to a flat colour dark grey.
4. Now minimise the white backgrounded windows, and switch to a grey background with no windows in front of it.
5. Look carefully at your screen: can you still see an outline of/text from the window in the position that it was, like it's burnt into the screen?

Terrible Screen Burn.

Ok, i have read a bunch of posts about this, but my problems seem to be different again. I have had small amounts of ghosting in the past, which have taken a while to appear and are usually gone after the computer is in sleep mode for a period of time. Now however, after even a short period of use i am getting terrible artefacts right down 1 side of the screen. horizontal lines every 2 pixels or so right down the left had side of the screen and they are now slowly appearing on the right had side.
Conveniently my warranty expired July this year, after which the screen has become exponentially worse. What can be done about this? It is seriously starting to become a problem as i do a lot of graphics work. None of the admins seem to have an answer - so what is Apple going to do about it?
I think we all deserve a solution. This is one of four macs i own, and believe me the alluring call of the hackintosh is getting louder with every new lovely bit of screen burn i acquire.

Like every insurance, AppleCare is a matter of probabilities and risk management. And very likely a huge profit for apple.
There are only a few parts which can fail which would be more expensive than the insurance, that is the main board and the display panel. These usually come with a $500 to $1000 price tag, where of course Apple makes the prices, keeping them high to scare people into buying the insurance. And if those prices did reflect the true cost, even if one out of ten display panels failed, they'd still break even.
The rest of the parts, like hard drives, fans, keyboards are in the $50 to $150 region, which means that every single computer with AppleCare could have one of those replaced and it would still cover the costs.
Needless to say that I don't buy it. I can replace a hard drive myself and if some of the more expensive parts fails, I'd take it as "**** happens", like someone bumping into my car in a parking lot and driving away.
Besides, I had a problem with my iMac 24" panel, which Apple would refuse to fix because of "environmental problem" (I know this from other people who had this problem and have AppleCare). Or think of the recent cases, where Apple refused to fix smoker's machines. One of the things which would have me go ballistic would be to have an insurance and then be told that a problem is not covered by it.
I have two 24" iMacs and really like them, but one of the nice things in the PC world is that there's hardly a part that can't be easily replaced for under $200. Or if matters become really bad, you can always resell or reuse the leftover parts.
