IMac screen chessboard problem

Hi, I've got the old imac white from around 2008 and until now it was brilliant. But...yesterday a problem occured, after the initial aoole logo and the bluescreen this appears:
When I start the computer with the shift button the screen is ok. When in safe mode only the mouse pointer is affected- it has horizontal gray lines around it.
Any ideas?

Hello PalmerMac,
Yours is one of many such reports.   Sadly because you are now out of both warranty and Apple Care (should you have had it), the cost of clearing it up will fall upon you.
Whatever else you may hear, unless you are truly competent, do not buy a glass screen and try to fit it yourself.  Have the job done properly by an Apple retail store, or a premium re-seller.
Here is a link to a typical report ... Greyish Smudge marks behind the glass...: Apple Support Communities ...

  • IMac screen sharing problem

I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro both running Mavericks.  I can screen share my MacBook's screen and see it on my iMac with no issues.  But I get an error message when I try to screen share my iMac screen and see it on my MacBook's screen.  I've tried turning off both firewalls.  Setting are the same on  both computers.  Also, file sharing works perfectly on both computers.
This has been frustrating as I only really want to see my iMac screen from my MacBook Pro.

    Hi,
As a Starting point go to iChat Menu > Preferences > Video Section and change the Bandwidth Drop down to 500kbps

  • New 24" iMac Screen Brightness Problem

My new 24" iMac's screen is much brighter on the left side than on the right. What should I do? Surely this is not normal for an iMac. Did I get a defective screen? Please help! Thanks in advance!

I got a 24" iMac from Amazon and noticed the screen gradient after a few hours of use. Then I also noticed a stuck pixel in the middle of the screen. I was very bummed and after reading through forums I realized that this seems to be a common problem. I was getting prepared for 3 "geniuses" gathering around my iMac telling me that they can't see anything wrong with it and then me trying to sell it on ebay with a $500 loss.
But things turned out quite different for me.
I took the iMac to one of our 5! Apple Stores here in Houston and explained the gradient and the stuck pixel to the Genius. He turned the computer on, looked at it for about five seconds and says "yep", turns it off and starts typing away on his MacBook. Five minutes later I asked him what he was doing and he goes: "Oh, I'm replacing it." Me: "the screen?" Him:" No, the whole thing!"
I was overjoyed, I almost couldn't believe it.
They brought out a brand new box and I asked him if they would let me transfer my files. They agreed and handed me a FW cable. I checked the new iMac for any screen issues and it looked perfect. So I started the setup and let it do its thing. I decided to go get something eat with my daughter while the iMacs were transferring files. Got back an hour later and it was done. The new iMac started up in my user account and everything. But then I noticed a black dot that almost looked like a dead pixel but it appeared to be right behind the glass and not on the screen itself. I asked another genius (the first one had left) if he could remove the glass and try to clean it. Sure enough he went to get the suction cups and popped off the glass. The black dust speck was visible and easily removed. The glass got re-installed and I packed the new iMac back into the box.
I expressed my feeling of satisfaction and headed home.
At home I thoroughly inspected the screen again and it appears to be nearly perfect.
I'm very happy now. Apple sells their products for a premium and I my case I received premium customer service. Way to go!

  • IMac screen backlight problem

    Hi
I have a 6 month old (late 2011) iMac 27" 2.7-i5-4MB/1TB, the screen constantly blanks with the iMac still running and the screen still with content on (can just see if I shine a torch at it).
Hot corners off - sleep set to 30 mins
I can bring the screen back if I press shift-control-eject and move/click the mouse, sometimes this lasts for 5 sec sometimes for 10 min or more.
Why is the backlight doing this, its seems there is a hardware problem that is restored (temporarily I admit) by a software action, I cant believe changing the backlight will fix this.
Does anyone have a solution or is it a case of getting it back to the mac tech's???
    Thanks
    Victor

Your iMac should still be under AppleCare warranty.
    Sounds like intermittent backlight connection.
Bring it back to an Apple store or authorized Apple repair facility to be diagnosed and repaired.

  • IMac screen dimming problem

Can someone please tell how to fix this? I believe it may be a hardware issue, but when I reload the iMac, it goes away. When I put my HDD image back, the problem starts up again.
Note: this is networked iMac (it is bound to a AD domain). This only happens after the iMac has been sitting idle for enough time to log out.
Here a video of the problem:

Try running in Safe mode.  This leaves out some video drivers.  Which results in machine not using advanced video hardware.

  • IMac screen has been flickering, does anyone know the problem?, iMac screen has been flickering, does anyone know the problem?

Recently my iMac screen has started to flickering does anyone know the problem?
    Any help appreciated

Bad power, unshielded speakers, improper hardware installs which lead to loose cables, can all cause this.

  • My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet".How can I change ip address?

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • How to i fix a flicker on my iMac screen?

My imac screen has just started flickering. I have researched it and it already a promblem with other mac's. How is this problem fixed? Thanks

You could reset the pram and smc to see if that helps. I would however suggest if the machine is within waranty you contact your local Apple store as this sounds like  a hardware fault to be honest.

  • 24" iMac screen issue

Hi all, just returned my new 24" iMac after a problem with the speaker and I have a nice fresh one. The problem now is when playing a DVD through either Front Row or DVD Player there appears to be a light at the bottom of the screen creeping onto the image. The top edge is perfectly black to the edge but where the dock usually is there's a broken light source like something behind the alu casing is causing a glow to creep through the screen casing. I can't remember seeing this on the model I returned. If it's like this on all models then I can live with it but otherwise it'll drive me demented.
    Thanks

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Backlight bleeding isn't right. I'm afraid you should contact Apple once more.

  • IMac Screen Failure

    Hey,
I was just wondering if any of you are experiencing screen failures as noted in the link below? If so, is it the aluminum iMacs, or is it the white ones?

    Thanks!!

    Hi autiger
Which iMac do you have and are you having any display issues?
I don't believe it can be jinxed, so I'll do a little bragging here. My 17" Early Core Duo w/Apple Care purchased Jan. 21 2006 is great and has no gradient light/dark, no dead pixels and only a very very small backlight bleed. The sRGB and Adobe RGB (1998) profiles were OK, but the display seamed a little washed out. After more than a few tries, and some good advice from Barbara B and others here I was able to set a new profile that is much richer than any of the factory supplied profiles.
All display manufactures and computer system will have there share of issues, some more that others. I have had more than a few Apple's over the last 20+ years without a single hardware problem. I do have to admit though, that with the all-in-one Intel I bought Apple Care for the first time ever???

  • Tech Specs for 24" Imac Screen/Comparison

Does anyone have the actual tech specs for the screen itself in reference to the 24" Imac (response time, etc.)
How do you think the screen on the 24" Imac compares to this HP 24" monitor?:

The 24" ALU iMac's display panel is an *LG.Philips LM240WU2-SLB1*.
According to TFTcentral, it's an 8-bit S-IPS panel. For more specs see:
    http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/panel_parts.htm
Great specs, but the specs don't say anything about iMac's problems with
uneven backlighting. The white 24" used the LG.Philips LM240WU2-SLA1,
and had a gorgeous display -- as does NEC's professional LCD2490WUXi.
Check the specs, but also check some [24'' ALU iMac screen photos.|http://picasaweb.google.com/TheLooby]

I don't have a mfgr's part number, but it uses a 6-bit TN panel. Faster
than S-IPS, but significantly poorer viewing angles. OTOH, it probably
doesn't have the brightness gradent problems common in ALU iMacs.
    For $75 more, HP's LP2465 and Dell's 2407 have superior 8-bit LCD panels,
    and much better warranties (3-year & 5-year versus 1-year on the w2408).
I'm sure there are many other good (or better) choices as well, but I haven't
    been monitor-shopping lately.

  • 2010 27in imac screen failure

my 2010 27 in imac screen has failed, right half of screen grey shadow, dark, i note that this has been a problem in the past, seems that apple ireland are not concerned? any opinions or suggestions? seems that there are major reliability issues with imac
extremely disappointed with product and apple support.

Your are missing the point. Yes, there will be the occasional Mac that has a display failure.. Yes, there will be a number of LCD displays that fail out of the millions of Macs that are assembled with LCD displays. And yes, techs will be seeing those occasional display failures over the wide array of Mac models upon which they work. But there are a number of companies that make LCD displays for Apple with the various Mac models that exist. And sometimes there are different companies making the displays for the same Mac model. These are the random, occasional display failures that can be expected with every computer manufacturer who assembles massive numbers of computers; Apple, Toshiba, Dell, Sony and on and on.
But the point is that the link that I gave you points to a consistent mass failure of displays on the same iMac model, assembled in the same factory, over the same time period with displays from the same manufacturer. That doesn't exist for your iMac. If it did we would see folks posting about it here in large numbers, just as we did back in 2006 and 2007, which we are not.
