IMac screen dims immediately after logon

Have a weird problem with a 1-2 year old iMac. It's running Leopard, and as soon as anyone logs into it, the screen immediately jumps to it's lowest setting. This forces every user to open apple-->system preferences-->display to move the brightness setting back up to full. It doesn't matter who logs in, with their network account. How can we remove this behavior?

See if a PRAM reset helps.

  • Imac screen went dark after power interruption any suggestions?

My son's imac screen went dark after a power interupption (someone turning the computer off by pulling cord out of electric socket) and I can't get it to go back on.  I've already tried depressing the "command, alt,p and r" keys to get a restart, and while it did restart, still no picture on the screen.  Occasionally you can see white staticy lines, but mostly it is just dark.   I've seen the suggestions to update software and back up data but that isn't possible as far as I can tell because I can't see anything on the screen - it is totally dark!  Any suggestions?  He is coming home from a trip today and hasn't had any access to computer for some time - he is going to freak

First try iMac SMC and PRAM reset, please do each of them 2x. If that does not work then try restarting in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. You did not mention the version of OS X running on the machine, if you are running Snow Leopard then install the Snow Leopard disc in the SuperDrive and restart, when you hear the start up tone hold down the Option key and start from the SL disc and run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions & Repair Disk.

  • IMac screen dims itself automatically; all attempted fixes fail; how can normal brightness be restored?

    Machine and OS:
2007 white plastic iMac with 20" screen and 2 GHz Intel Core Duo, running OSX 10.6.8.
    The problem:
The screen dims itself for no known reason. It is especially noticeable when waking from sleep: for the first second or two after waking up, the screen is at normal brightness -- but then after a second the computer seems to "remember" some setting or command, and the screen unquestionably dims itself to be about 20% or 25% darker.
Because the screen for a brief moment after waking is at full brightness, that proves to me that there is nothing physically "broken" about the display that prevents it from illuminating fully; it could be at full brightness if it "wanted to," but some kind of software or firmware glitch is telling it to be dimmer.
The fixes I have attempted so far -- ALL of which have FAILED (so please don't recommend them again):
    - Reset the NVRAM or PRAM by holding down Command-option-P-R upon startup. For some reason this technique doesn't cause the second chime, so it doesn't appear to be zapping the NVRAM or PRAM or whatever, and consequently has no effect on the dimness, which persists unchanged after restarting.
    - Reset the NVRAM using the terminal command ' sudo nvram boot-args=”-p -r” ', as recommended on this page: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2172681?start=0&tstart=0. I can't tell if this really did reset the NVRAM (it doesn't cause a second chime upon restart), so I'll just have to assume that it "worked" -- but except for one instance, it had no effect on the screen dimness. (That one instance went like this: after issuing the Terminal command and restarting, the screen did go back to full brightness -- but only until the first sleep. After waking from that sleep, the screen once again dimmed itself as before. And no, I have not been able to repeat this momentary "success"; on all subsequent attempts following the exact same steps, no brightness has ever returned at all since.)
    - Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) as recommended on this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 . Basically this just entailed shutting down the computer waiting a few seconds, then unplugging it, waiting a few more seconds, then plugging it back in, then waiting a few more seconds, and then finally starting it up again. Result? No change: screen still dims itself.
    - Pressed the "brighter" and "dimmer" keys on the keyboard; those do make the brightness go up and down, but the top brightness setting is much dimmer than it should be (and used to be). All the way to brightest setting = still noticeably dimmer than normal.
    - Used  the "brightness" slider in the System Preferences > Displays > Display window. That also does indeed adjust the brightness up and down, but as with the keyboard brightness keys, the highest setting is still too dim.
    - Readjusted the "Calibration" in the System Preferences > Displays, which had no noticeable effect; even when going into Expert mode and adjusting every little aspect of the screen display's default settings. Those all seem to be about color balance anyway, not about brightness. I now have three different new calibration settings, and clicking back and forth between them and the default setting makes no real significant difference. Whatever setting I choose, it is still dimmer than it should be, even though in all my attempts at calibration I tried to make it brighter.
    - Tried going to System Preferences > Universal Access > Seeing and adjusting the "Enhance Contrast" slider and trying out "Black on White" vs. "use Greyscale"; none of that helped, and did not seem to be relevant to the problem.
    - Tried going to System Preferences > Energy Saver, and clicking the "Automatically reduce the brightness of the display before display sleep" check box on (and then closing the preference pane) and then off again (following the advice at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2309?viewlocale=en_US) -- but it had absolutely no effect whatsoever on the brightness level.
Final note: The keyboard and mouse are both Apple products and work perfectly, and the machine has no other performance issues. Just the dimming, which started a few weeks ago inexplicably and without warning.
I can't imagine what is causing this problem, and I've absolutely run out of ideas about how to fix it. One thought I had was that maybe the screen is dimming itself due to detected ambient illumination, but I'm not sure 2007 iMacs even have that feature, and also the screen remains dim whether the room is dark or bright. Maybe there is an ambient light detector somewhere that is malfunctioning?
Help! How can I solve this? The screen is not so dim as to be unusable, but it's annoying enough that I'll have to get a replacement machine if this is not fixed eventually.

Does an external display also act in a similar manner as the internal one?
Some earlier Intel-based iMacs had graphic processor card issues; not sure what
the symptoms of the majority of them were, but some had odd patterns, others
went black, and some would range from OK to totally unusable. Among others.
So there is a chance the graphic processor may be going out; or just the circuitry
that controls the backlight. An inverter may be weak or other circuit to the display
    could be wearing out.

If you have access to an Apple Store with Genius bar, they can perform some kinds
of diagnostic tests there even though the computer is out-of-warranty; that may be
of help to narrow down the cause of the symptoms you've noticed. They may not be
able to repair it, however, at an Apple Store; as it is rather old by today's standard.
An Apple Authorized Service Provider could do repairs and testing on older models
the Apple Store's Genius and other may not be set up to handle due to vintage.
Find an Apple Authorized Service Provider
    Visit an Apple Retail Store
There is a country locator page to help find either of the above in regions outside
of the US & Canada, not sure how the above links would work; and it appears my
bookmarks to the country locator page may not be accessible now to post here.
You may be able to get an idea about what kinds of parts support the display
function by name by looking into an iFixit.com repair guide for your iMac series.
Hopefully the parts supporting the display are the reason it is dimming down, as
a graphic processor failure likely would exhibit other behaviors than just dimming.
PS: I see you've added content to your thread after I'd started working on this
& the answer likely is a hardware repair; professional testing is worth the time
and you seem to have at least one other thread on the same topic....
    Good luck & happy computing!

I've turned off the ambient light settings under display, but still the screen dims then turns off, while on AC power.

  • 24" iMac Screen Dim Humming

I have recently noticed that when my iMac's screen auto dims, a faint humming noise comes from within the iMac. Is this normal?

I have heard of this happening but I do not know how normal it actually it because mine does not do it. I would do a little forum searching because I know the topic has been discussed here before.

  • My imac screen is flashing after startup?

I may have a problem with my imac's screen flashing around the dock right after blue screen it shows up.
The dock will flash for a 1sec or 2sec and thats it.
Do i need to test the memory because i did install Hynix 2 X 2GB PC3-8500S DDR3 and they where from a macbook pro?
Will i need to take them out and leave in 2 original sticks then restart the imac to see if it corrects the problem?

A screen flash is not related to RAM. It's some other issue, which could be software or hardware related. You can start by doing some basic trouble shooting including restarting in Safe Mode and doing both a SMC and PRAM reset. It's OK to do each of these actions multiple times and it may be necessary to do them multiple times. If they don't help you can try some other things which we won't address yet.
    iMac
    SMC & PRAM Resets
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • IMac Screen Dimming

About a week ago my screen started to randomly dim and then get bright again. The auto brightness is turned off. Its very random when it does it, Im worried the screen is starting to going bad or something. I purchansed the computer new at the end of 2011. Its a 27" iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB. Is anyone else having this issue? All of my software is up to date.

    First, some commentary:
    http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57609897-37/apple-sued-over-alleged-imac-scree n-dimming-issues/
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22938701#22938701
This issue results usually from two things: the brightness settings, or the graphics card. It seems you've already accounted for the brightness settings, so you might want to investigate the latter.

  • IMac screen goes black after 1+ hours of use and we can't get out of this.

I have a mid-2007 iMac.  When anyone is on the computer for approximately 1-1.5 hours, the screen goes black and we cannot get out of this.  There are no time restrictions or power-saver settings on.  Can anyone help me with this issue?

You cannot do anything with the iPad until you do as instructed by the iPad and connect to iTunes on a computer.
You probably need to restore the iPad and the only way to do that is via iTunes on a computer.
Take it to an Apple Store and ask for help at a Genius bar or take it to a friend's house that is running iTunes on their computer and try to restore it.
You will lose all of your data and settings now because you never backed the iPad up in the past.

  • Imac screen dims and two browser windows flicker.

Not sure how to explain this, but when I have two browser windows open, at random, they start to flicker and the whole screen gets dim.
    What can I do?
    Thanks

I just noticed that when it happens, the mouse pointer stays with the hand icon.
Then when I move it to a window, that window goes dim.
    Can someone explain this?
    Thanks

  • After I click on sleep, my iMac wakes up immediately after, what's wrong?

I want to make my iMac sleep, I click on SLEEP, it goes in sleep mode for a second and wakes up immediately. I don't touch my mouse nor the keyboard… What's wrong?

Open System Preferences > Energy Saver
    Click:  Restore Defaults
Then put your Mac to sleep.

  • My iMac wakes up immediately after sleeping

First off, I'm using a mid-2010 imac with an i7 Quad Core processor, 8 GB 1333 MHz RAM, and Mac OSX 10.9.5.
I've had this issue for a while now and I seriously can't pin it down. It doesn't always do this - it seems completely random, where it will be constant for a few weeks, then it'll stop... then it'll start doing it again a couple months later. Basically, I put the iMac to sleep, and as soon as I can hear everything power off, it immediately wakes up. I've tried the following troubleshooting, to no avail:
    *Disconnecting USB peripherals
    *Turning off bluetooth mouse
    *Disabling wake for network access
    *Closing applications
Sometimes if I close my browsers (I primarily use Chrome and Firefox) it seems to allow the computer to sleep. Other times it doesn't. Sometimes I just have to shut down the whole computer to prevent it from keeping me awake at night. It's really frustrating. Anybody have any ideas?

  • Screen freezes immediately after app opened

Using iMac late 2009, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 using Mavericks Version 10.9.4 running ok since updating July 11th.
Today when opening Preview, Pages, Numbers, iPhoto, iMovie, App store etc. app opens as does application menu but then freezes entire screen.
Had to use force quit.  Safari ok but if opens in Preview can't do anything.  Tried reinstalling software without success.

I hope to have done as you suggested but hopelessly out of my depth.  Appreciate your help

  • IMac screen dimming problem

Can someone please tell how to fix this? I believe it may be a hardware issue, but when I reload the iMac, it goes away. When I put my HDD image back, the problem starts up again.
Note: this is networked iMac (it is bound to a AD domain). This only happens after the iMac has been sitting idle for enough time to log out.
Here a video of the problem:

    Hello,
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

  • 20" Imac Screen Goes Black After Start Up?

A few days ago my screen went black and stays black.  It is a 20" intel core 2.0 duo processor Model #A1224.  Serial # W8740 which I guess means it was built in the 40th week of 2007.  When I restart the screen comes on for only a second or two and then returns to black, every time.  I know the computer is booting as I can hear it working and if I look very close at the screen I can see windows open and if I hit the space bar I can faintly see the windows highlighting but the screen is very much black and the windows are barely visible.  I can also turn the volume up and down and hear it.  I have tried all the different resets suggested in the related discussions and have removed and replaced the ram, nothing has worked.  From researching I am guessing it is one of two things.  Either the video card attached to the logic board which sounds too much to have replaced or possibly the lcd display. However none of the other topics I have found have the exact same symptoms so I am not sure what the problem is.  I do not have coverage as its a 2007 computer.  I found a lcd for around $130 and think I can replace it but am not sure if this is the problem.  Also apparently I would need a different lcd if the current one is made by lg, but the only way to find that out is to take the current one out and look at it.  I don't want to do that unless I am sure its the display.  Any suggestions or related issues would be very helpful.  I am probably due for a new computer but don't want to lose everything on my current computer, it is my personal and business computer and holds a lot of important info and applications.
    Thanks in advance!!

    Any suggestions?

  • White screen/page shown after logon to Internet Sales

    Hi!
We have installed Internet Sales R/3 Edition for B2B and have configured it with XCM according to the documents "CRM Web Application Installation Guide 4.0, SP0" and "Internet Sales R/3 Edition", the latter found on SAP Best Practices. Both Shopadmin and B2B are configured and the "jcoping" ping test works in both cases. The user in R/3 is of "standard type" and not of "service type" or alike. This user can logon to the NW04 portal using R/3 as method of authentication. That's why he's chosen for ISA as well.
But when I try to logon to Internet Sales with this user I just get a totally blank page and a URL that looks like this:
    ...:50000/b2b/b2b/login.do;jsessionid=(J2EE4082300)ID4082350DB181644782240539570End;saplb_*=(J2EE4082300)4082350
I don't know if this is good or bad. Before I corrected some settings another person had done in the XCM, I got two different messages when trying to log on:
"Name or password is incorrect (Please repeat logon)"
    first and then
"Error in user administration, call our hotline "
(Depending on what settings I had done).
First I thought I was making progress since the URL indicates some kind of session id etc, but then I saw that I got the same URL with "session id" even if I just wrote rubbish at the logon.
Does anyone have any ideas about what to do?
    Best regards
    Benny Lange
