IMac screen "ghosting" or "persistence"

After 3 trips to the Genius Bar with my iMac and 4 Tech Support phone calls, Apple has washed their hands of a problem I am having with my 2-year old iMac. So far the hard drive has been replaced as well as the LCD screen. Yesterday, an Apple senior technician told me that the problem (that I will shortly describe below) is not a hardware problem and therefore is my problem, not Apple's, to solve by ME Googling a third party software solution, notwithstanding that all the software on the computer, with very minor exceptions, is Apple software and that my Apple Care extended warranty is good until June 2011. At this point it is looking pretty useless except for the trial and error troubleshooting they have done so far.
The problem started months ago with the screen all of a sudden going blank with everything disappearing including the mouse arrow. The screen would take on various colors, i.e., pink, purple, grey, white with blue vertical stripes, etc., but no icons or anything of any structure.... including the dock icons. The only way to get the computer back was a hard reboot by powering off and then on. It did not make any difference what program I was using or what was open or what was connected to the iMac (powered hub, printer, speakers, etc.). On the first trip to the Genius Bar, they could not duplicate the problem. On the second trip, the hard drive indicated 5 problems so it was replaced. Along with the above problem, I noticed what I called "screen burn" but what Apple calls "persistence." They did not do anything about that. So far, the problem with the blank screen has not recurred following the replacement of the hard drive and LCD screen. I'm not sure which action solved that problem.
I took a number of pics of the screen with my iPhone that clearly showed the "ghost" dock icons when the dock was moved to either side of the screen away from the bottom position. I sent them to Tech Support and was told to take the computer back to the Genius Bar, which I did. They were clearly visible and the next fix was to replace the LCD screen. When the "persistence did not go away after the screen change, I called Tech Support again and sent more pics of the ghosting on which the date on iCal could be easily read. The senior tech representative said he would send the pics to Engineering, which he did. When he called yesterday, he essentially said, "Too bad, it is not Apple's problem. You need to find a third party software fix. Goodbye."
Not only are there ghosts behind the dock icons, there is a vertical parallel line from the top to the bottom of the screen on the left 1/3 of the screen that will not go away. It was there before the LCD screen was replaced and still is.
I have a friend with a newer iMac than mine and he found that he had "persistence" on his screen last night, although his was not under the dock icons. His ghosting was on the left side of the screen toward the top of the screen. The easiest way to check for ghosting under the dock is to change the screen background to a solid color such as grey or green (a darker color) and then move the dock to the right or left side... assuming that it is on the bottom, which is where I normally keep mine. If you have ghosting (persistence) you should be able to still see remnants of the icons including their shape (square, round, star, etc.) and may even be able to read the date on iCal. This problem seems be heat related in that the ghost icons are harder, not impossible, to see after the computer has been asleep for a while. After using the computer for a while, the icon ghosts stand out remarkably well.
I'm guessing that Apple must be aware of this problem (though they don't want to admit it) since they increased the speed of the fan during the last trip to the Genius Bar. Until then, the fan could barely be heard, but now, it is loud, obvious, and obnoxious.... and it has not solved the problem.
Has anyone else encountered this issue? If so, have you solved it and how did you solve it? Did you find a third party software program that solved it, temporarily or permanently?
I am more than a bit miffed at Apple for abrogating their responsibility by telling me it is my problem, not their's, and that it is my responsibility to find a solution.
I'm anxious to hear from others, but not wishing this problem on anyone.

I have just recently had this problem as well on my 24 inch iMac, though the evidence leading up to the problem wasn't as extreme. I didn't experience the screen going blank, things disappearing, or screen flashing pink, purple, grey etc.
I do however have an "image persistence" or burn-in issue. I leave a window open for as little as 5 minutes and when I move or close it a faint representation of that window remains burned into the screen. It seems to be most evident with high contrast websites, such as Google. When I leave the google home page up for a few minutes I will get a burned in Google logo on my background along with the address bar and a box the size of the window.
When I first noticed the problem I took it into the Apple store to have it checked out. The genius there listened to me patiently as I described the problem but wasn't sympathetic when he tried to replicate the problem by letting a window stay open for at most 30 seconds. He didn't say anything about not being able to see the problem himself but sent me home with a Work Authorization to replace the LCD panel. The store got in the 755 dollar part a couple of days later and I took my computer in again and they replaced the panel. They called me up a day later to pick up my "fixed" computer I took it home to test it out and the exact same problem was still there.
So I call up Applecare and explain what happened and told them how stupid it was that they sent me home with my computer and before verifying if they even fixed the problem. They agreed that it's a hardware problem and it's a possibility that it could be the logic board. They set me up with another appointment at the Apple store. So I take it in again and tell them that the display was replaced a week ago, and that it had the exact same issue as before. They get me to show them them problem again... this time he actually acknowledged that he saw burn in on my screen and told me that he will order in another LCD panel because the one they put in must have been faulty. I told him how ridiculous it was to replace the screen again because it seems very unlikely that the new display would have the exact same problem as the old one. I asked him what is going to happen when that comes back with the same problem and he didn't have a good answer.
So... instead of really addressing my problem this Apple store will have spent $1600, nearly the cost of a brand new 27 inch iMac, to not fix my problem. Had I not been protected by Applecare I wouldn't have been able to afford all of these replacements. Applecare should be built in to the cost of the computer. These computers NEED three year warrantees. I love it to death, and haven't had any other problems (knock on wood). But I'm an illustrator; I work almost exclusively with Photoshop doing colour and image quality sensitive things. I feel your pain man. I'll let you know the outcome of this. Who knows, maybe the genius was right and that the part they gave me was faulty and by coincidence it had the exact same problem as the one that shipped with my computer. But that leaves me to question the reliability and quality of the parts they are using.
I've been looking around on forums and there are a ton of different issues with this display. In fact you know if it comes up as a google suggestion when you search, there's a problem. Just type "+24" iMac d+" and Google will help you out by suggesting "+24" iMac display problems+". We're not alone.

Can you post a picture of your problem?  Sometimes, that helps.  You did not mention where this ghosting effect takes place?  Startup?  Finder?  Browser?

  • What causes ghosting on an iMac screen (27")?

What causes ghosting on an iMac screen (27")?
The ghosting on my computer is not uniform; it becomes darker toward the bottom of the screen and is more prominent on the left side.

That's just because of a defective LCD panel (it has nothing to do with your graphic card). A lot of Macs have got that problem, and unfortunately, the only solution to that is to take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller to get your display replaced

  • Why is my IMac screen see through?

My IMac screen is kind of see through, when I do anything on it, it stays on the screen faintly even though I've closed the application or whatever, and the screen itsef is much fainter than it used to be, like the colors arent as strong as before.
Is there something I can do to fix it?
    Thanks!

    Hello Nina,
Thank you for the details of what you are experiencing on your iMac.  I found an article with some information about what you are noticing on your iMac.  I recommend reviewing the following article for more information:

  • My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet".How can I change ip address?

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • How do i connect my iMac Screen to Apple TV?

    How do i do that?

  • I have a Thunderbolt iMac 27" with a Thunderbolt Display attached.  I would like to use the iMac and Thunderbolt display in Target Display Mode for my new Thunderbolt MacBook Pro.  So far, it seems I can only use the iMac screen itself.  How do I do this?

When I press the Command + F2, the iMac screen becomes a secondary for the MacBook Pro, and the Thunderbolt Display becomes the primary screen for the iMac.  I was hoping that both screens would become secondaries for the MacBook Pro.  Does anyone know how I should proceed?  I have tried to connect the Thunderbolt display directly to the MacBook Pro, and the iMac to the Thunderbolt Display via the separate Thunderbolt cable, but there was no difference.  And since the MacBook Pro only has the one Thunderbolt port, I'm not sure how to proceed.

Yes, eww, the language definitely states two thunderbolt displays, but I can understand the confusion and was siding with how they could make the mistake to think it would work like they want it to. My appologies for not being clear on that point, but I think you make it clear that the language in the ad says nothing about an imac.
Having said that all the language about TB would suggest that this would be possible. http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/
    High performance on display.
Thunderbolt I/O technology provides native support for the Apple Thunderbolt Display and Mini DisplayPort displays. It also supports DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, and VGA displays through the use of existing adapters. So you can connect your Apple LED Cinema Display or other display, along with multiple high-speed devices, all from a single port.

  • Any external monitors as good as imac screen for text?

    hi all.
this is my first mac.  it's a new 21.5inch imac with a 2.7ghz i5 proc running OS X 10.7.3 and 12 Gigs of RAM (8 Gigs from crucial for $50, who can resist?)
i've got it hooked up to an external samsung syncmaster B2330 running in 1920x1080, which is this monitor's native resolution.  works fine.  it's hooked up via the dvi port on the screen via the mini-displayport to dvi adapter for the mac.  i switch this monitor to the vga port when i want to use it as my pc monitor also running at 1920x1080.  there is a source button on the monitor.  very convenient.
the issue is that they text on this screen when coming from the mac is not as clear was when coming from the pc despite the fact that the vga port provides much less bandwidth than the dvi port the mac uses.  i've read that the mac and the pc display text on screen using different methods.  my pc uses an nvidia display graphics card.  i believe mac use ati based hardware.
there appears to be much more interpolation when displaying text from the mac.  perhaps this is a text size issue i'm not sure.  either way i read a lot on this monitor and need it to be as good as possible for that purpose.
so the question is, does anyone have experience with an external monitor that is as good as the imac screen for text display.  i can't use the thuderbolt display or a cinema display since they don't switch to different ports allowing my to use a single external monitor for two machines.  i'm willing to spend up if there is a reason to do so.  i'm on these computers a lot.  i work from home with some regularity and my job is all about reading.
    any help is appreciated.
    best, c

I have an dell 24" lcd as 2ed monitor and text look as clear as the imacs screen
but it having a t-nfilm lcd panel vs. the imacs ips panel the colour and contast look worse
    but text look as clear
and it look the same when I boot up in win7 using bootcamp

  • External Monitor with iTunes - iMac screen goes black

I have an iMac with iTunes 7.7/Leopard and an external VGA monitor (I use the standard Apple mini-DVI to VGA converter) then I use the external monitor to watch video from my iTunes library.
All works well - I have my desktop spread over both monitors, I fire up a movie from iTunes, move the video window across to the external monitor and everything is good - I can watch the video on the external monitor whilst continuing to work on my Mac - the iMac screen displays the Mac desktop as normal.
However, if I put the movie into fullscreen mode (view -> fullscreen on the iTunes menu), the external monitor displays the movie in fullscreen mode as it should, however the iMac monitor goes black.
The only way to fix this is to exit fullscreen mode and go back to one of the view options (rg fit to screen).
Any ideas how I can have my external monitor in fullscreen mode and have my desktop back?
    Many thanks
    SM

  • How to i fix a flicker on my iMac screen?

My imac screen has just started flickering. I have researched it and it already a promblem with other mac's. How is this problem fixed? Thanks

You could reset the pram and smc to see if that helps. I would however suggest if the machine is within waranty you contact your local Apple store as this sounds like  a hardware fault to be honest.

  • How to keep iMac screen black while keeping secondary monitor running for visual experiments in Matlab

    Hi,
I'm trying to run a visual experiment using PsychToolbox in Matlab.
I've attached a secondary monitor to my iMac for this purpose and I'm having difficulties trying to
    'black out' the iMac screen.
I need the secondary monitor to run at a refresh rate of 120Hz and at linearised luminance (did this for my secondary monitor),
so I can't really use my iMac screen. However, i need my iMac screen to be darken out because I'm doing a vision experiment.
I tried dimming my iMac screen but it doesn't go completely dark. I tried Ctrl+Shift+Eject (or was it Command) but it will darken both
monitors. I also tried mirroring, but it doesn't seem to work too.
I'm really stuck and any ideas will be greatly appreciated!
    shui
    NB:I'm using OS X Version 10.8.3.

I do not know the details of your experiment, but creating a black monitor is not difficult. For example a completely black page, e.g. in Power Point, set to fill the screen?
The advantage of doing this with PP is that you can move in to or out of the black page with just the space bar. You can set up your monitors so PP is displayed on just one monitor.

  • 24" iMac screen mist behind glass

For a couple of months now my 24" iMac screen keep misting up behind the glass around 30 mins after booting - anyone know a resolution for this? Will Apple replace the screen even though i've had it around 4/5 years now?

It is common to get condensation between the display and front glass panel, if it is humidity and cool in your office or home.
A few things that you might try, are
    1. Reduce the level humidity with a dehumidifier.
    2. Leave the iMac on longer until the condensation dissipates.
    3. Remove the front panel yourself and clean between the display and glass.
Will Apple replace the screen even though i've had it around 4/5 years now?
No, but if you contact your local Apple Store or AASP you can schedule an appointment to have it dried and cleaned.

  • IMac Screen Failure

    Hey,
I was just wondering if any of you are experiencing screen failures as noted in the link below? If so, is it the aluminum iMacs, or is it the white ones?
    http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/11/30/imac.screen.failure/
    Thanks!!

    Hi autiger
Which iMac do you have and are you having any display issues?
I don't believe it can be jinxed, so I'll do a little bragging here. My 17" Early Core Duo w/Apple Care purchased Jan. 21 2006 is great and has no gradient light/dark, no dead pixels and only a very very small backlight bleed. The sRGB and Adobe RGB (1998) profiles were OK, but the display seamed a little washed out. After more than a few tries, and some good advice from Barbara B and others here I was able to set a new profile that is much richer than any of the factory supplied profiles.
All display manufactures and computer system will have there share of issues, some more that others. I have had more than a few Apple's over the last 20+ years without a single hardware problem. I do have to admit though, that with the all-in-one Intel I bought Apple Care for the first time ever???
