IMac screen goes "flooey".

Kittendaddy was using his indigo iMac earlier tonight when the screen took on a weird red tint. He asked me to look at it, and after asking him if he'd messed with the monitor settings, I advised him to restart. When he restarted, the screen did this:
http://s123.photobucket.com/albums/o305/kittenmommy/?action=view&current=100_654 5.flv
I connected it to my iBook and discovered that it starts up just fine in target disk mode, though the monitor still wasn't right (it didn't display the FireWire symbol, for one thing). I was able to get his iTunes music onto my iBook.
Subsequent restarts were just the same (I made the above video during one). I tried starting up from the DiskWarrior CD, but the monitor was still all funky.
Any advice?
Thanks in advance,
Kittenmommy.

OK, look at the side of your machine, and does it
appear that it has Firewire as this image shows?
I'm not that much of an amateur, LOL! Yeah, I know for sure it has FireWire. Both of the indigo iMacs have it - the one with the failing monitor that Kittendaddy is using and the one that sits on the floor. Like I said, they're identical machines except that one came with a CD burner and one came with a regular CD-ROM drive.
If not, then you can't add Firewire to it, or a fast
external hard drive, and will have to settle for CD
burners which run at slow USB 1.1 speed.
I think I'm just going to tear both computers apart later and put Kittendaddy's HD and CD burner into the one that has a working monitor. I did glance at eBay, thinking about replacing his iMac altogether, but I'll be buying a new computer for myself somewhere down the road and he'll inherit this iBook. Replacing his iMac at this point probably isn't worth it.
With the monitor failing, will I still be able to use Remote Desktop to control the computer, or will my iBook's display show the same Matrix-like gibberish that the iMac's screen shows?

what does mean when a imac screen goes all white

Hopefully its not the logic board. try a PRAM reset: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
basically hold cmd, option, P, and R directly after start. Keep holding them down until you hear two chimes. That indicates a successful PRAM reset. It is not uncommon to hear 3.
If that doesnt work try an SMC reset. Pull out the power cord from the back of the mac for atleast 15 seconds. plug it in again for 5 seconds and power back on ...http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

    Sounds like a power issue.
Try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • HT1776 Hi, my iMac screen goes to sleep but the fan stays on 24hrs and never stops?

Hi, my iMac screen goes to sleep but the fan stays on 24hrs and never stops? You can hear it running all night.
Appreciate any advice.I'm using Lion. Many problems started since using Lion!

The temps are a bit higher than I'd expect under normal circumstances, and too high while playing games, but what is the room temp where it is?
I def. think its a temp thing now. but why does it only raise when im playing games or watching videos online?
Games tipically press the CPU, Video Card, RAM, and everything else much harder than most apps.
It may be a Fan not working properly, or just dust buildup.
Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
    Report any errors it finds.

  • IMac screen goes black after 1+ hours of use and we can't get out of this.

I have a mid-2007 iMac.  When anyone is on the computer for approximately 1-1.5 hours, the screen goes black and we cannot get out of this.  There are no time restrictions or power-saver settings on.  Can anyone help me with this issue?

You cannot do anything with the iPad until you do as instructed by the iPad and connect to iTunes on a computer.
You probably need to restore the iPad and the only way to do that is via iTunes on a computer.
Take it to an Apple Store and ask for help at a Genius bar or take it to a friend's house that is running iTunes on their computer and try to restore it.
You will lose all of your data and settings now because you never backed the iPad up in the past.

  • External Monitor with iTunes - iMac screen goes black

I have an iMac with iTunes 7.7/Leopard and an external VGA monitor (I use the standard Apple mini-DVI to VGA converter) then I use the external monitor to watch video from my iTunes library.
All works well - I have my desktop spread over both monitors, I fire up a movie from iTunes, move the video window across to the external monitor and everything is good - I can watch the video on the external monitor whilst continuing to work on my Mac - the iMac screen displays the Mac desktop as normal.
However, if I put the movie into fullscreen mode (view -> fullscreen on the iTunes menu), the external monitor displays the movie in fullscreen mode as it should, however the iMac monitor goes black.
The only way to fix this is to exit fullscreen mode and go back to one of the view options (rg fit to screen).
Any ideas how I can have my external monitor in fullscreen mode and have my desktop back?
    Many thanks
    SM

  • 24" 2008 iMac screen going black

My 24" 2008 iMac screen keeps going black then coming back after a while. What temperature would it need to get to in order to knock out the display? I have iStat.
Also, if the screen fails due to graphics card or other component, is it possible to connect an external display to use it until I can upgrade to a mini?
    Cheers.

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.

  • Imac screens goes black

My 2007 Imac's screen started going black.  I can hear it still running, and even hear sounds from programs.  After awhile though I can no longer hear the progams. but it still sounds like its running.  It happens when I open games apparently, hasn't done so with just browsers and itunes open.
I'm guessing it's a graphics card but wanted to be sure.  I have an ATI Radeon HD2600 256MB.  Can I replace the card on this machine?

ok, my screen has now gone black it wont come back on, looked on utube, there is a vid on there how to fix this problem, tried it, didn't work, so i found a workaround, thunderbolt connector to DVI, i think its called (thunderbolt to another monitor) bought this cable, £20 from PC World, apple store 1 hr drive, PC world 15 mins, found a spare monitor, plugged all in, nothing worked, both screens black , but then pressed COMMAND F1 BOOOOOOOM ............... only joking spare monitor is mirroring the iMac screen, so all working again till i can get a replacement screen.

  • My brand new iMac screen goes black intermittently...

Hi - I bought my 27" iMac about 3 months ago and pretty much since I got it occassionaly the screen goes black. I'll be working away and all of a sudden it goes black. After a few seconds it comes back on, but this can't be good? I asked my local computer guy and he said it was a known issue due to safari and not to use safari. That seemed to fix it but A) I like Safari and B) it's started happening now even when I'm not in Safari. Any ideas?

That's ridiculous. Take it in for warranty service.

  • IMac screen goes dark

When waking computer, screen flashes then goes black again.  But it's on.  Computer goes to sleep or screen goes black - it looks asleep - out of no where, even while typing, the screen starts dimming as if I wasn't using it.
    Does this sound familiar?
I have the latest Lion - thought about Mountain Lion but haven't been able to see the screen long enough to install.
Help....should I take it in to a mac shop?

Have you blown the dust out lately?
Let it cool for an hour  or 2 & see if you can get these...

  • IMac screen going dim . . .

Lately my older imac screen has been somewhat dim when waking from sleep.... only happens sometimes, seems to be normally bright at the bottom, growing dimmer the further toward the top you look .... if I restart, everything is fine again.
Hardware problem? Seems unlikely since it seems unrelated to how long the computer has been on, it's immediately fine on restart. Any ideas appreciated . . .

Some problem with my iMac. Took it back to the Apple Reseller, they 'repaired' it after 3 weeks. Got it back, still the same problem. Called them and they said is was a normal buzz which the inverter card(?) makes, like the fan and the HD.

  • Small rectangle near top right of iMac screen goes blurred when encoding?

I posted this in the Compressor 4 forum and Russ H confirmed he experienced the same effect but didn't know why.
Here's the peculiarity and an explanation as to what is causing it would be appreciated.
A few weeks ago when I was encoding something in Compressor I suddenly noticed that part of my iMac screen had gone blurred.
I feared it might be about to pack in but further investigation showed that the perfectly rectangular blurred patch only occurred when using the Share Monitor.
    Very strange indeed!
This red rectangle shows roughly the area affected.
Inside is blurred with a sharp demarcation to the normal screen.
When I quit Compressor and the Share Monitor the patch immediately becomes clear again.

I have done an investigation and pinned down the exact cause, though I do not know why.
It is caused by Share Monitor but only appears when when you click on the i  (Show Info) button.
When you close the Show Info window, the area below it is blurred and remains so until you quit the Share Monitor.
Furthermore, a narrow band along the left side of the Share Monitor, stretching as far as the pointed bit of the window is also blurred.
If you click the screenshot to enlarge it, you will see that I have extended the red rectangle to the left and if you look carefully you will see that the "o" and "b" of  "Job" are blurred.

  • Imac screen goes black using iPhoto, have to restart to open

My imac screen started to go black when working in iphoto. I have to shut down and restart to open. Has been happening more and more frequently so
now i am really frustrated...help, or anyone else out there with this problem. I am running iphoto 11

It's possible you have a bad RAM chip, try running Apple Hardware Test on your system.

  • Using Lr5 area of iMac screen goes dead to tools

Area of iMac screengoes dead to tools after using Lr5  every couple of days.  Can only be sorted by closing and restarting
    Lr5.0  using with Late 2012 27"i7 iMac, OS X 10.8.4  Nividia GeForce GTX 675MX
After using the tools with Lr5 open for ~2 days, a rectangle of the screen (approx 17 x 10 cm, just off centre) goes dead to tools and I have to quit and reopen Lr5 to get access to the whole screen again.
When the screen area is dead to Lr5, other programmes work in that area, so not a hardware problem.
I've tried resetting Crop and about anything else I can think of bar trying the Lr5.2 Release candidate.

My first suggestion would be Reset the Preferences File
Next would be to reinstall LR.
Next would be to use the release candidate.
Actually I would recommend the LR 5.2RC first but you seem unwilling to do that yet.
