IMac screen is black, Resetting PRAM and NVRAM did not solve

Hi
My iMac screen just went black. I tried
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM and the SMC but it didn't help.
The computer starts up and shows the gray screen, but within a second it just turns black.
I need help please!
Thanks

You can try to reset the SMC by unplugging the power cord from the back of the iMac for 1 minute. You can also try to start up to the install DVD by holding command+C on startup with the disc in the iMac. If it does the same thing after the SMC reset and when you try to start up to the install DVD I would take it to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for hardware tests.

  • I reset PRAM and NVRAM and PMU screen on ibook dark can't see

Hello. My g3 ibook screen was changing from darker to okay. I read the forums about reseting pram and nvram and pmu. So, I reset the PRAM and NVRAM, scren went completely dark. It still would chime and boot up. Witha flashlight you could see desktop. So, I reset PMU, now no chime and still desktop is dark. What happened? I don't have a cable yet to hook it up to an external monitor. I ordered one on eBay, should have this week. What did I do to the ibook? More importantly what can I do to make it work again.

Does adjusting the angle of the display make a difference? (A little forward or a little back?)

    Maybe something there will help.

  • Resetting PRAM and NVRAM bring Bluetooth back

My MBP Bluetooth menu lost somehow and could not connect to
"Apple Wireless Keyboard" and "Microsoft Bluetooth mouse",
    the following steps seemed working:
    1. Resetting PRAM and NVRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
note you have to "Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound twice".
    2. Connecting to "Apple Wireless Keyboard":
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1809
** "First unpair the keyboard If the unpaired Mac is within 33 feet
(10 meters) of the computer your keyboard is currently paired with"**
    3. Connecting to "Microsoft Bluetooth mouse"
    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/features/bluetoothhow_toconnect.mspx
note you have to hold the connect button on the bottom of the mouse:)

Most likely an issue with the system management controller interacting with the bluetooth host controller, it can be reset by doing 1 of these three depending on your situation:
If you have a desktop computer: Unplug it from the outlet and anything plugged into the firewire/usb ports, leave it that way for 45 seconds minimum check it again and see if it mounts in disk utility
If you have a laptop do one of these two steps and post back if it mounts:
Removable battery: Remove battery, disconnect charger(power adapter), hold down power button for 5 seconds, put back in battery should resolve
Embedded (non removable) battery: plug in the power adapter/charger, turn off computer, hold down on the LEFT side of the keyboard Shift-Control-Option. While your holding all of these press the power button once, let go of just the power button. Two seconds or so later let go of the rest of the buttons, you'll know this step was successful if it didn't turn on.

I cannot shut dow my MacBook Pro using the apple icon (as it was suppose to be), actually I have to press and hold the on/off buttom. I have taken twice for Mac dealer and they did not solve the problem. What must I do? I would to remark that I have installed 2 antivirus and uninstalled one of them. Since then I have facing this troublesome issue. Thanks

Uninstall the other AV software. They are not needed. All they do is cause trouble like you are having now.
If you have been forcing the Mac to shut down with the power switch you may nave corrupted your disk. You should repair it with disk Utilty to remove any corruption the shutdwons may have cased.

  • Will resetting pram and nvram on Mac osx help download problemss?

I have a new imac which I play Sims 3 on.  The game plays really well but I am unable to download content from the official EA exchange website.  When I try to do this by clicking on the link everything freezes and I get the spinning rainbow curser.
To troubleshoot this I have uninstalled, reinstalled and added latest patch.  I have tried safari and firefox browsers.
A person from EA help said to reset the PRAM and NVRAM.  I have been told how to do this, but am a bit worried as it sounds a bit extreme?  The imac is only 3 days old and I don't want to break anything

Phew problem solved!  Instead of using Safari I had to use Firefox.  But then I had to select some boxes...I did not do that the other times!
If anyone else has that problem the answer is
    Open firefox
    -firefox
    -preferences
    -Applications
Then scroll down to Sims3 and select Use The Sims3 (default)
I have no idea what it all means but it works.

  • Resetting PRAM and NVRAM

Is it ok to have a PRAM and NVRAM reset two times a week?

No, it doesn't do any good unless you're having a problem that those procedures fix.
Edit: I've never reset PRAM or SMC/NVRAM on 4 out of 5 macs.

  • Computer really noisy (fan I think?). Resetting PRAM and SMC does not work.

    Hi,
so basically, as the title says, my computer is making a really loud noise as soon as I turn it on, I am presuming it is the fan.
Over a month ago, my computer started to constantly crash, and about two weeks ago I took it to a Genius Bar for a diagnosis. The problem was a hard drive failure, so I had it replaced and yesterday I brought it back home.
However, after the fix, the computer now runs fine, but there is a really loud noise from the computer.
I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC like some other threads have suggested, and none of them have worked. I have tried restarting, shutting down the computer and everything suggested.
The computer has never made this noise in this manner before.
Before the fix, the only time it would be noisy like this is when I wake it from sleep, just left it there (on screen requiring username and password) and it sleeps again, and if I wake it from sleep, then it would be loud like this, but that is solved by just simply sleeping the computer again and waking it, and it will be all quiet again.
However, now, it makes this loud noise as soon as I turn the computer on, and as long as the computer is not shut down or asleep, it will make this noise.
Before the fix, my OS was 10.4.11, but the Genius Bar had installed 10.5.8 on this hard drive.
Is this a software problem or a hardware one?
Anyone got any suggestions or ideas how to fix this?
I have called the Apple store I visited for this fix already, they push me over to AppleCare and AppleCare pushes me back to Apple store and they tell me they cannot provide technical support over the phone and would need me to take the computer back to the Genius Bar.
I am just not happy about this. I live almost an hour away from the closest store and I have university to attend to as well.
So I am hoping this problem can be resolved without having to go back to the Genius Bar, although all methods I have read so far do not help.
    Thanks,
    From Lelouch

Hi, well, the thing is, I am just worried that, while making other repairs, they might have damaged something unintentionally and probably do not know about it, which would not be documented.
My initial problem of a loud fan, after a hard drive replacement, was fixed, so I do not hear it anymore, but this wind-like noise is different. With the iMacs, I presume the fans are towards the top, which was where the loud fan noise came from, however, this wind-like noise seems to come from the bottom of the computer screen are, centre and right side (in the direction I face it), but not the left side.
I describe it as wind-like, but it sounds a bit like when the computer is on heavy demand and the computer loads, yet different as it is quieter and slightly different in pattern, and unlike the usual heavy demand noise which comes from the top, it comes from the bottom.
I actually installed a temperature widget after my last repair, just in case my fan was just simply tuned off and would not come on at all for the sake of fixing the loud noise it was making.
    The temperatures read as follows:
    HD: 31
    CPU: 27
    Ambient: 17
    GPU: 36
    GPU Diode: 46
    GPU Heatsink: 36
    HD Bay: 33
    Optical Drive: 30
To my knowledge, these should be fine temperatures?
But the noise persists regardless. The noise can instantly be heard (providing that it is quiet enough) as soon as the computer starts up.
    Thanks,
    From Lelouch

  • Resetting PRAM and SMC does not resolve crashes; what next?

Lion has been crashing (when going to sleep, when waking from hibernation, when closing Safari's last tab, when shutting down, among other, less common, scenarios) very often on my MacBook2,1.
What is the sequence of steps you would try to resolve, or at least debug, the problem? I have already reset the PRAM and the SMC. Imperically, the rate of crashes may have already lessened, but it still happens. What to try next?

Here is the last gory message. I did nothing more perverse than boot the laptop, launch emacs to read a text file for a minute, exit emacs, then shutdown. It didn't. It crashed instead. This is the crash log when I rebooted.
Oh, and I was in the car. So I wasn't connected to anything of any sort.

When I click on any link, the browser opens a new window. I have searched the browser options to fix this and have not found a place to select a different option. I have reset Firefox and checked all of my plugins and have not found anything that seem to be related to my problem. Sometimes, Firefox will work normally for the first few minutes of use and then start opening a window for everything.
By normally, I mean that I click a link and it opens the link in the same tab that I'm browsing. Some links will open in a new tab, depending on the type of link. Mostly, they open in new windows no matter what.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

  • Resetting PRAM and NVRAM Revert System to 9400m?

I just noticed this and was wondering if it was a common occurrence. If I have my MBP set to use the 9600m GT and I decide to reset the PRAM/NVRAM, will the computer automatically revert to the 9400m after such reset. I just noticed that my graphics settings changed by itself and could only draw up the PRAM/NVRAM reset as the cause. Is this the case? Thanks!

    Yes it is

  • Cant reset PRAM and NVRAM!!!

hi i having trouble with my macbook, and i need to reset the Pram but i cant i have been trying for more than 10 times and i cant reset the pram with cmd+alt+p+r. is there any other way to reset the pram,, maybe its cause i put a password on openfirmware?, i want to the rid of the password too!!! is the anyway to get rid of the password?
i dont have any Os installed on my MAc so icant download any app

    Greetings,
Read this article on the Open Firmware password: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
Enabling the password disables a variety of startup keys including the PRAM.
Follow the section of the article for activating the Firmware password and in step 5 remove the check mark for "Require password...".  This will disable the firmware password allowing you access to the startup key combinations listed in the article.
    Cheers!

  • Blue screen keeps popping up, format and reinstall did not fix problem

My wife has a Toshiba Satellite A55-S3063 Laptop with Windows XP Home. After we got married in 2008, I noticed SP2 was installed and there was an update ready. She said SP3 never installed and I couldn't get it to install. Even with Registry checks, removing anti-virus, and other suggestions from the MS site, I still couldn't get it to install. I told her we would do a format and reinstall "someday." A month ago, the blue screen of death started coming on regularly and the computer would restart quickly after flashing the blue screen. I did a System Restore from a previous point, but a few days later, it started happening again. I decided to take this opportunity to do a format and reinstall, so I backed everything up. Her computer came with a recovery disk that only gives you the option to do a format and reinstall, not a recovery like I've done on other computers. So the format was really our only option. I did this and installed all the Service Packs (including 3). I put a new battery in (that we hadn't used before) because the old one didn't last very long and I got a blue screen and restart the next time I turned on the computer. AFter that one time, it worked fine the rest of the day. The next day I plugged in the external hard drive (Simpletech 500gb) to move her info back over. A few minutes later, blue screen and system crash. On restart, same thing. Next restart, just a black screen. I decided no big loss if I reinstall again, so I reinstalled again. Now I just get the blue screen during setup. Right after I type in the computer name and click "Next" I can hear the hard drive spinning and then the blue screen and system restarts. The blue screen is not up long enough to read, so I can't give you an error message.
I can only assume this a hardware problem, but I don't know what or how to fix it. We have her sister's old computer which is the same computer, bought at the same time, but stopped working years ago. So with explicit instructions, I might be able to retrieve hardware from that. Except the hard disk; her sister kept that and is using it as a small external drive.

this link should give you some info on how to get it open to everything

  • After updating to firefox 26.0, my bookmarks were deleted and I am unable to save new ones. I have re-dowloaded & reset firefox and that did not work.

Before updating to 26.0 I did not have any Firefox backup account.

    Hi bmfowler,
bookmarks are linked to your profile (irrespective of what FF version you are currently on) this profile should be left intact by an upgrade/downgrade.
First thing I would do would to be run -> %appdata%/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/ (standard profile location) to figure out whether the old profile (with the bookmarks) is still available. If so proceed with the

    Hope it helps.
