IMac screen is dark

The screen is dark on my 2006 iMac.  Is there a way to reset or do I need a new part?  Also, what cable do I need to connect it to a MacBook Pro to recover data?

Hi mgtrumpet,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I recommend using the steps in this article to troubleshoot your iMac, starting with the "No video..." section:

  • Imac screen went dark after power interruption any suggestions?

My son's imac screen went dark after a power interupption (someone turning the computer off by pulling cord out of electric socket) and I can't get it to go back on.  I've already tried depressing the "command, alt,p and r" keys to get a restart, and while it did restart, still no picture on the screen.  Occasionally you can see white staticy lines, but mostly it is just dark.   I've seen the suggestions to update software and back up data but that isn't possible as far as I can tell because I can't see anything on the screen - it is totally dark!  Any suggestions?  He is coming home from a trip today and hasn't had any access to computer for some time - he is going to freak

First try iMac SMC and PRAM reset, please do each of them 2x. If that does not work then try restarting in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. You did not mention the version of OS X running on the machine, if you are running Snow Leopard then install the Snow Leopard disc in the SuperDrive and restart, when you hear the start up tone hold down the Option key and start from the SL disc and run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions & Repair Disk.

  • My iMac screen suddenly dark. Cursor works. Display gone? Processor ok?

Screen went dark gray almost black.  Cursor still present and moves as should with mouse.  Sound controls work, too.  Feels like display died? Processor still okay but unreachable?  Or is it the reverse?

Problem now fixed with SMC reset.  Is this a sign that hard drive or display is going?  Have 24-inch, Early 2009 iMac.

anyone else had this or can anyone offer solutions, iv run out of warranty and support.

Both. My 20" iMac at work has the same problem. It is common on the ALU 20" iMacs and yes I would say it's defective. Apple may not agree though.

  • IMac screen goes dark

When waking computer, screen flashes then goes black again.  But it's on.  Computer goes to sleep or screen goes black - it looks asleep - out of no where, even while typing, the screen starts dimming as if I wasn't using it.
    Does this sound familiar?
I have the latest Lion - thought about Mountain Lion but haven't been able to see the screen long enough to install.
Help....should I take it in to a mac shop?

Have you blown the dust out lately?

I am having dark blurred light ghosting effect on my imac screen. Does anyone experience this?

When posting in Apple Communties/Forums/Message Boards.......It would help us to know which iMac model you have, which OS & version you're using, how much RAM, etc. You can have this info displayed on the bottom of every post by completing your system profile and filling in the information asked for.
***This will help in providing you with the proper and/or correct solutions.***
Can you post a picture of your problem?  Sometimes, that helps.  You did not mention where this ghosting effect takes place?  Startup?  Finder?  Browser?

  • IMac screen simply goes dark

The display on my 2010 iMac (Intel processor) has recently started going dark intermittently. Sometimes the machine can be on for two hours, other times 10 before it happens. Problem is it's happening more often.
When the screen goes dark, I believe the software that was operating at the time is still working though since I can, for instance, still hear the audio I might have been playing before it went dark.
I just can't control anything because I can't see it.
If I reboot, everything comes back up. This machine was NOT upgraded to Maverick.
Anyone else ever had this problem?

I have the exact same issue. It started happening about a week ago. I boot up, everything is operating normally then the screen goes dark, not completely black as in shutdown mode, but very dark blue. My alert badges still come up but none of the usual wake up maneuvers work.

What do ido if My iMac (intel) starts but the screen remains dark.

Reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Reset the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Try booting into Safe Mode > Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Or if you have installed new RAM, try reinstalling it or the iMac's original RAM making sure that the modules are fully seated in the slots.
Then if it won't light, seek sercice from your Local Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Store. > Apple - Support - iMac - Service FAQ

  • My screen on my iMac 2008 goes darker in the top 1/3, readable but why?, My screen on my iMac 2008 goes darker in the top 1/3, readable but why?

The screen on my iMac (2008) goes darker all the time in the top 1/3 of the screen.  It has been doing this for the past year.  It's readable but just.  Is there anything I can do to correct this or is it just the screen is dying?

Either the display or graphics card is in trouble. Run Apple Hardware Test in extended mode three times back to back. If errors appear then a hardware issue is confirmed, the next step would be to take the machine in for repair. Because the machine is 6 years old now you may want to consider looking into a replacement for it.

  • Darker area on iMac screen

I noticed on the left side of the screen there is what looks like a darker blotch underneath the glass. It shows on a white background. The iMac is a 3.06 Ghz 22 inch model.
I bought it just under a year ago. Will Apple replace it for me?

    Hi.
I also noticed the exact same thing on my 27" iMac Core i7.
The iMac is purchased 1 year ago and I luckily have bought the Apple Care Protection Plan for both iMacs. First I thought that my screen was dirty so I cleaned it (as described by Apple in there guide) but the result was the same. After a few weeks the screen went darker an darker. The surface area with the problem was getting bigger and bigger. It was really ugly compared with the other iMac and the comments from my family and friends... It's like "Dougal222" reported underneath the glass! I can see it even when I boot up my iMac!
I can't say what this dark stuff underneath the glass is but to me it looks like 'smoke' or 'dust'. I was happy, in a way, to read about the problem over here and that I was not the only one...
@Dougal222: Did Apple repaired or replaced your screen?
B.T.W.: I was reading the HardMac.com forum yesterday and they also noticed the same problem. Again it's exactly the same I really love my iMac it's so beautiful and powerful a the same time. I'm a Mac user since 1996 when I bought my first Performa 5320 and this is the first problem I have with a Mac. In between I bought the original iMac rev.a, a PowerMac G4 dual and just before this one a PowerMac G5 with also 2 G5 processors in it and 8Gb of RAM. The G5 is still a great and fast machine but I needed an Intel Mac for developing. And the Intel Mac is the 27" Core i7 iMac 11,1!
Lets hope that this problem will be fixed under my AppleCare Protection Plan. I'm feeling bad about the Mac users without AppleCare and the same issue... Maybe Apple can fix it in a rather cheap way? I just hope that I don't need to replace the whole screen!
    Sincerely, Iwan.

  • IMac G4 screen remains dark

my 17' G4 iMac USB 2.0 (10.4.11) screen froze and the following messages appeared:
"System failure: cpu 0 00000008 unaligned stack"
as well as lots of the following lines:
"Unresolved kernel trap (cpu 0) 0x600 Alignment DAR" etc
Had to shut it down by using power switch. Pulled out all cables except for mouse + keyboard.
I can start it - but there is no start-up chime and screen remains black.
Tried safe boot, no response. Tried to open drive door during start up for putting in hardware test disc (mouse held down), door won't open.
Tried PRAM, no response. Tried PMU reset, no change.
Removed extra RAM I had fitted years ago and tried to start it. After I did that the iMac responds
with a 4 x beep morse code signal after turning it back on, but screen remains dark.
Also tried to start in target mode, but other 27' iMac does not "see" G4 iMac.
Anyone has any thoughts ? Don't want to get rid of this machine, I love the design.
    Thanks
    Walter

There is some likelihood of a hardware failure, to include
perhaps, the logic board; some kernel panic issues on an
iMac G4 could point to such an event.
Not certain if checking out such a machine at that stage is
possible with the original Apple Hardware Test, since that
relies on viewing evidence of the results in said computer.

{After Oct 1999 the four-beeps signal appears to mean a

While it may not be a major melt-down, you could be in for
a project at some point in the future if you start looking into
finding other similar iMac G4s (they are getting scarce) to
use either for parts or as spares should their needs go there.
    I have two running iMac G4 1.25GHz 17" & one in-op for parts.
A skilled and willing computer shop tech could probably
test the computer further, but some shops would rather
you buy something newer from their retail store. In some
cases, you may be able to get a working iMac G4 17" 1.25
for a few hundred dollars; if lucky, one in fine shape.
Perhaps one of the techie folks who frequent these forums will
see your post & offer their insights, based on experience.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How to keep iMac screen black while keeping secondary monitor running for visual experiments in Matlab

    Hi,
I'm trying to run a visual experiment using PsychToolbox in Matlab.
I've attached a secondary monitor to my iMac for this purpose and I'm having difficulties trying to
    'black out' the iMac screen.
I need the secondary monitor to run at a refresh rate of 120Hz and at linearised luminance (did this for my secondary monitor),
so I can't really use my iMac screen. However, i need my iMac screen to be darken out because I'm doing a vision experiment.
I tried dimming my iMac screen but it doesn't go completely dark. I tried Ctrl+Shift+Eject (or was it Command) but it will darken both
monitors. I also tried mirroring, but it doesn't seem to work too.
I'm really stuck and any ideas will be greatly appreciated!
    shui
    NB:I'm using OS X Version 10.8.3.

I do not know the details of your experiment, but creating a black monitor is not difficult. For example a completely black page, e.g. in Power Point, set to fill the screen?
The advantage of doing this with PP is that you can move in to or out of the black page with just the space bar. You can set up your monitors so PP is displayed on just one monitor.
