My iMac screen stays black and chimes when started.

Impossible to help if you don't at least fill out a profile that tells us which iMac you have, what version of OS X is installed, how much RAM the system has etc....

iMac screen flash black and white when returning to top sites or before sleep...any ideas why?

    Howdy OatsaMae,
It sounds like your screen is flashing unexpectedly on you for some reason. I would recommend this section from the following article to help you get that resolved, named:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.

    - Charge the iPod for half an hour.  Then reset the iPod:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - if still not working, connect to your computer. If iTunes sees the iPod, restore the iPod.
    - If still problem, place the iPod in recovery mode and then try to restore the iPod.  For recovery mod see:

"If VoiceOver is on and the screen is black, but you can still use the device by pressing volume up and volume down, you may have screen curtain on. Try triple-tapping using three fingers on the device display to turn off screen curtain. Or connect the device to iTunes"

It could possibly be the video card, or the logic  board.  You could try a smc reset if you have not done s yet.   smc reset:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
I had an issue similar to this, and there was a bad logic board, hard drive and video card.
You might want to bring it in to the Apple store, they do the diagnostic for free and give you a repair price.
They offer a flat repair rate, which they fix what ever is wrong as long it was due to liquid damage.
The repair cost me about 1/3rd the price of a new machine and the machine has been fine ever since.
It's worth getting it checked out.

  • I'm trying to install a new samsung 27" series 7 750 monitor. I have a macmini. when i plug the cord in between the computer and the mknitor, the screen goes white, but no display. When not plugged into the computer the screen stays black and cycles

I'm trying to install a samsung series 7 750 monitor for use with my mini mac. When I plug the computer to the monitor I get a blank screen, no picture. When not plugged in to the computer the screen is black and a square displAys that says analog, HDMI 1, HDMI 2. Any ideas?

    Hey there saraszeg,
It sounds like you are trying to use an external monitor with your Mac Mini but cannot get more than a gray screen. You can use the following steps to help troubleshoot the Mac side of things here:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1573
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).

  • Screen Goes Black and Hangs when browsing by Artist, Album, Song, etc.

I'm having a fairly huge issue with Front Row:
I can play video files (although their is a moment of hangtime between selecting a video and the video actually playing) and music files (if I choose the "Shuffle Songs" option), however, when I choose to browse my music by artists, albums, songs, genres, etc. my screen goes black and stays that way until I hit CMD+Q over and over until it finally quits. Furthermore, when I do play music via "Shuffle Songs" and quit out of Front Row, the music continues to play in the background and cannot be stopped, paused, etc.
Is there anyone out there who can help me fix this? I love Front Row and use it all the time and it would be a shame not to be able to anymore..
    Thanks in advance,
    Corey

I have a similar problem. When browsing music the screen goes to black or just freezes on whatever was beeing displayed for maybe 30 seconds to a minute before continuing. It happens quite often. I am running the latest version of Front Row on a brand new Mac Mini. I have a very large iTunes music folder (about 830 gigabytes of uncompressed AIFF files) running on an external FW800 drive. I tried repairing permissions and a number of Front Row and a few iTunes files appear in the list. However, when I run repair permissions again, the same files are still listed so obviously if they need to be repaired, it's not happening. I tried repairing the volume (no problems found) and repairing permissions from the Install disc but the result was identical.

  • I locked my ipod before i went to bed the other night and i tried to turn it on the next morning and the screen stayed black and now i was wondering what i could do to try and fix it.(besides plugging it into itunes)

    Hi,
Try a Reset of the Phone... You will Not Lose Any Data...
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
The Apple logo will Appear and then Disappear...
    Usually takes about 10 - 15 Seconds...
    Turn the Phone On...
If that does not help... See Here:

My screen went black and I can't use computer.

  • 5 year old iMac, screen stays black on startup.

This 5 year old iMac makes the seek optical drive sound when switched on, but does not chime, but I can hear the hard drive going afterwards.
The screen just stays black, not a flicker.
The problem is that it is located in a small pretty isolated town in NE Brazil, I will be going back out there later in the summer so if anyone has any helpful ideas it would be most welcome. Fortunately we have a full CCC clone of the hard drive and a working MBP so we haven't lost anything, but it would be very good to have it working again.
Does it have a socket for an external monitor, I really cannot remember, as I have not seen it since November, I know the old round iMacs had one.
The nearest Mac store is probably in Rio or Sao Paulo which are a good day travelling by  car and plane so there is no chance of getting it there.
Any useful thoughts? I will be pleased to hear them, anything to try we can probably do over a week or so.
    Many thanks in advance

Yes it shouldn't be that difficult. You can tell her to try some basic resets too, they won't hurt and might help. First is try resetting the SMC and PRAM. It's OK to do these multiple times, also trying to restarting in Safe Mode may work. For the SMC and PRAM resets I  will print the instructions below. To do a Safe Mode restart, hold down the Shift Key when the startup tone is heard, if she can see a progress bar appear release Shift key and let it fully boot. Then restart normally to test. If the screen is still black then the LCD or the graphics card has probably failed. In that case it's probably best to just replace the whole computer as the expense of repair will be difficult to justify.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • IMac screen is black and won't turn on

I got a 27" iMac (intel) a couple months ago (mid-year 2010) and sometimes the screen won't start up after it goes to sleep. Most of the time, I will leave the computer and the screensaver will start then the display will turn off and go black. When I return and hit a button on the bluetooth keyboard or move the Magic Mouse around, the computer will come out of sleep, display will turn on, and everything works the way it's supposed to. However, every now and then, the screen will go to sleep (turn black) and it won't turn back on when I hit the keyboard and move the mouse. I can just barely hear the fan still working, so I know the computer is on but asleep. Even when I hit the power button or hold it nothing happens, it won't even restart. I have to physically unplug the power cord and replug it back in then hit the power button to get the computer to start up again. I have moved the computer around to different outlets and even tried it at a different house, but this issue still occurs. Am I doing something wrong with the Energy Saver settings or is there just something wrong with my computer?
    Thanks!

Hi, I hope you find this information useful:
A few years ago, we purchased iMac 27" 11,3 (Mid-2010) (with i7 2.93Ghz, ATI 5750 1GB VidRam, etc.) for our offices and software development team. They were originally shipped with Snow Leopard and worked as expected and without any problems. However, a year later, we upgraded to Lion and all of machines immediately exhibited the same problem: the screen would go to sleep by itself and would require a hard reboot or sleep on/off. (Only the screen was asleep and the rest of the iMac continued to function; this was confirmed by screen sharing to the machine.)
Due to the severity and impact on our business, we immediately contacted Apple and their genius bar staff in New York/SoHo. They were unable to determine the root cause, so they replaced all of the logic boards, video cards, and screens, and got us back online asap. This resolved the problem, but we were curious to know why. After days of rigorous testing, we concluded that the issue is caused by a bug in MacOS. Specifically, faulty Kext files (Kernel Extension files extend the functionality of the MacOS Kernel) for the ATI drivers.  So, why did the replacing the hardware work? We think that the Kext files that were released and distributed with Lion (and later MacOS versions) correctly supported the newer hardware revision of the replacement components, but not the older ones.
If you're experiencing this problem, short of replacing the components or waiting (for another 3+ years) for Apple to hopefully fix their OS software, you can lessen the effects and be able to recover faster by doing the following: (Please bear in mind that these are not permanent fixes.)
Turn on "Hot Corners" and assign one corner to "Put Display To Sleep". When your screen goes to sleep, move your mouse (which still works) to that assigned screen corner for a second, then move it again. This will wake your screen. You may have to do this a couple of times, but it's much faster than a hard reboot or a sleep on/off for your iMac.
Turn the brightness of your screen to a low setting (10%-15% of the total brightness).
Turn on screen sharing, so you have a last resort method of accessing the machine.
If you're not convinced that it's a MacOS software problem, then do what we did and see for yourself; install Windows 7, Windows 8, or Linux via Bootcamp or as the only OS on the iMac. Those operating systems and drivers worked flawlessly for us; the bug does not occur and the screen does not go to sleep, but if you dual boot and switch back to MacOS, the bug reappears because the iMac is loading faulty Apple MacOS software.
    Good luck!

Found this in the voiceover manual.  Try this shortcut.
    Darkening the Screen
If you are a sighted user, you can use the screen curtain to simulate a non-sighted user’s experience. The screen curtain turns off all the visuals of the display, leaving a blank screen. This is a great way to learn how to use VoiceOver.
To turn the screen curtain on and off:
    Press Control-Option-Shift-F11.
Edit:  FN Control Option Shift F11
