IMac screen went black. What now?

All was working well and then the screen on my iMac went black. PRAM reset did not help. Restarting indicated that the computer was on but the screen was black. Any suggestions? I am running a 27" iMac, 10.5.8 OS.

Try resetting the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If that doesn't help you might consider taking it in for service.

I turned my computer on this morning and everything was fine, but then my screen suddenly went black. Naturally, I looked over all the forums I could but realised mine was a unique case... Upon pressing the start up button, I heard no noise (my computer wasn't on mute) and shining a light on the black screen did not show me anything on the screen was still there.
I think it might be dead for good, but in case it isn't I would be open to hearing what anyone has to say!

Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

Using a different cord- nothing.
this is an iPhone 5. with whatever ios system that came with the iphone 5. did not upgrade to the ios 7 yet.

Helpppp! My Imac screen went black or rather does not come up after the start up sound. I should say this was during a thunderstorm and I think I heard the spark of electricity around the system and shortly after the contents on screen became distorted. I put off the system and the display no longer comes on. Please come to my aid.
