Won't go completely dark when you do what? When you turn it off, lower the brightness?
I'm not sure what you are doing that would make it go completely dark. Certainly, shutting it down should make the screen go completely dark.
Do you still have the Apple keyboard? If so, try using this and seeing if the screen does what you expect it to do.
BTW This forum (although badly labelled) is specifically for the new intel based iMacs. To ask questions about G5 iMacs go to this discussion:

Thanks for posting this. I've been having the same issues myself for a long time and I couldn't suss it out. Like your mac, my contrast setting had been increased too - must have accidently hit the keyboard shortcut. It was also affecting my vision too. The difference is massive.... thanks

My iMac Screen has become completely pixilated and flashing

Went to use my computer this morning and after about 5 minutes the screen became completely pixilated. Shut the computer down and tried to restart and got this.
Called apple care but my protection plan has expired, representative was very nice and after listening to me describe the problem he sent me a link to reset the PRAM. I followed the instructions and now I get this:
Computer continues to go to a grey box that says I must restart. Does anyone have any other suggestions for what this may be?? PLEASE HELP!!

Indeed! That's why I editted out that part after having second thoughts and seeing your follow-up. The MacTracker database is pretty good about details but does not go into which iMacs have separate video hardware. From personal iMac exerience within the family, we jumped from a G3/400 to my mid-2010 quad-cor i7 27-inch without managing to own any of the intervening models!
My biggest concern for the OP is parts. Althoguh that model still shows as "supported," there have been times when Apple didn't have parts that old.

Screen wont sleep completely

I started noticing today that my phone screen doesn't turn off completely when I try to put the phone on stand by. It goes blank but there is a dim light on. Does this consume battery and how do I fix it?

URGENT HELP NEEDED: iMac screen suddenly going half dark?!

So earlier tonight I was using my iMac perfectly, then had to stop since I was going out with friends for dinner and to see a performance and when I came back, shook my mouse awake my screen came back on from it's sleep mode and was fine and then the top half dimmed.
I tried messing with the lighting because I thought maybe my roommate's cat may have stepped on it, but it was at 100%. I rebooted, turned it off for 5 minutes then turned it on again and it comes on fully lit for a split second then dims at the top again. It's not black, but you can see that the screen has dimmed a lot. I'm attaching a picture, hopefully you can tell what I mean. It's a kind of crappy phone pic but that's all I have right now.
I bought this iMac in May 2007, so I doubt I have any warranty left and I can't remember or find paperwork to see if I bought apple care protection.
Does anyone know what this could be? I've read on another forum that it might be a back light going out. Any idea how much that would cost me?

Well, some questions ?
I'm just another user and no expert, but:
*Might not want to shut it down until you have backed up your data, First!*
1.) Does everything else run good? --if "beach balling" badly, call an expert and I wouldn't shut it down or sleep it.
2.) Is there a hardware test you could run? --each version of OSX generally has something like disk utilities you can run. Try apple's downloads page for useful 3rd party utilities, assuming you can run them o.k. and everything "seems" fine except for screen.
3.) Do you have it plugged into a surge protector? --sometimes they get used up. You could (after verifying hardware and preferably backing up data) try it on another wall socket in another room, to check electrical viability. You might have a bad or dangerous wall outlet. If the wall gets really hot above the outlet, have it checked out immediately. Houses burn down every day from bad outlets and old aluminum electrical wire. (lol, I'm not saying anything bad about your house.....just trying to cover the basics).

Maybe you need to adjust the energy saving preferences.
Start System Preferences, then click on Energy Saver. Adjust the settings to your personal taste.

Can you post a picture of your problem? Sometimes, that helps. You did not mention where this ghosting effect takes place? Startup? Finder? Browser?

IMac 27 i7 8Gb screen wont light up

Hi all,
First of all, i was really happy with my imac 27. It was amazing. So fast...
But then..
My imac became very very slow. I Thought it was because my imac was full of crap. I want to play the new saints row 3 game so i decided to create a bootcamp partition for that. So i started bootcamp created a partition and the installation started. Windows 7 x64 ultimate without Service pack.
My imac was during the install very slow. After 1.5 hours of installation the setup told me: Windows cannot be installed on this hardware. Hmmkay.. weird.
So i tried a windows vista dvd. After 2.5 hours off installation, windows vista was installed and works. Slow again. I tried windows xp. Blue screen. unable to mount drive. drive errors it said.
A friend of mine borrought his windows 7 x64 ultimate SP1 cd. I tried that one and after 2 hours of installation, my imac booted windows 7. My imac was also in windows very slow when it became to harddrive tasks. I installed saints row 3 and start play. it was not playable. the game lagges. And again long wait times.
After reading possible solutions on internet, my conclusion was the harddrive. so i decided to swap my harddrive because my imac doest have any warranty anymore. :-(
I work at a pc store. building pc's and laptops and repair them is my core business so i know what i am doing. After checked a few youtube video's i decided to do it. so i pulled the glass off, unscrew the LCD, lift the screen up, disconect the cable replaced the harddrive and put it al together. I replaced my 1TB WD for an new 1TB Samsung.
The first time the mac booted well and i restored my backup. My mac was fast as **** again and i was really happy. So i installed my bootcamp partition again. and saints row was also fast and good now. Jeeeej..
But then the second day, my screen wont light up. i hear the sound and the bootup sounds from facebook etc.
I need to restart 10 times and pull the power cord out etc. then it starts normaly..
Is this problem because i did not put a wd harddrive in again ? something with the temp sensor ? Screen starter broke?
Is there someone who have got the same problem ? Anyone who can help me?

This same issue happened to my new iMac last week. The screen has still not turned on, as I write this I am using a secondary monitor on the machine.
There is a very long thread here - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2223188?start=390&tstart=0 with many other users having this problem. My guess is that it has nothing to do with you switching hard drives.
I do not know of any solutions this thread offers, only to show you that this is a known issue. There are many theories, the most popular one having something to do with bluetooth devices but again, nothing conclusive.
Honestly, for the past week I've come to this fourm and everyday there is a new thread with this problem happening, mostly with the 27 inch models. I find it very absurd Apple would be so in the dark about this.
Unfortunatley, I have not heard any perment solutions, currently I am still searching for a way to get my monitor to come back on.
Best of luck figuring out how to turn the monitor back on and what to do to stop it occuring again.

I had a problem with my iMac screen, sometime in a second my screen turn the bright to brightness and then turn darkness, bling bling ( please note that it not because of sensor of iMac depend on the light around) I felt there is something wrong with my VGA. If it won't startup in Safe Mode, then try Startup Manager or the Apple Hardware Test from your original Install Disc.

My iPhone 5C went completely dark then had a red screen

So about a half hour ago, I had my iPhone 5C and tried turning it back on (it was fully charged) and nothing happened. So, we tried bringing it into recovery mode by holding down the power and home button for a while. The iPhone's screen just turned red for a while. Then, it went dark again, and upon trying to start it, the apple logo appeared, but it had these strange flickering vertical lines through it. The phone went dark again, and alternated between completely shut off and the flickering apple logo for a little while, and now it's completely dark. What should I do now?

ok so this is what i did i finally got it to work...so i taped the black screen with 3 fingers and then it went back to normal and it ****** me off because i had tryed that already so when it goes back to normal even if the voice over is still on it is easy to turn it off if you follow the steps....lol i googled how to turn off voice over so google it

Try the standard trouble-shooting steps: Restart, Reset, Restore. If these don't solve the issue then you may have a hardware probem. If so, contact Apple Support.
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPhone shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds). Ignore the "Slide to power off"
Restore: Use iTunes on your computer to Restore your iPhone to as new.
