Imac seagate 750gig Hard Drive performance

Ive got a new alum imac that I got about a month ago. Ive been doing some xbench benchmarks and have come to the conclusion that the internal 750 gig seagate is extremely slow. The only reason i benchmarked my mac was due to some performance issues i noticed when accessing the HD.
Comparing the results on Xbench seems to back up my results. It appears the WD 500g drive out performs the 750 by more than double the speed on most tests.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Both seem to have faster uncached write times
That's strange. The WD5000AAKS should be faster than the Seagate on
large sequential reads and writes -- but only by about 10%. OTOH, the
Seagate should be about 10% faster than the WD3200AAJS.
WD doesn't specify sustained MB/s figures for either drive, so I can only
guesstimate the numbers based on Tomshardware's R/W measurements
of similar WD drives, plus WD's Mbit/s specs. (A simple divide-by-eight
doesn't work for translating from Mbit/s to MByte/s disk transfer rates.)
I'm curious as to how you're making the comparisons:
\- Are you swapping drives on the same iMac, or do you have several?
\- How full are each of the drives? Read/write speeds are fastest when
the drive is nearly empty and decreases significantly as it fills up. Data
density (bits per revolution) is highest at the outer edge of the platter.
\- What's the Seagate firmware rev? I'm aware of one firmware SNAFU
affecting some 500GB Seagate 7200.10 drives, but don't know whether
any of the 750GB models were also involved.
By the way thanks for the input
My pleasure. I'm interested in learning more about HD performance.

My iMac Seagate 1T hard drive crashed. I replaced it with a Western Digital 1T hard drive. Where can I get the Lion OS?
The iMac comes up with a ? in a folder, even after starting with Option/Command/R keys pressed.
    Please help.

Call Apple to purchase replacement discs or order a copy of Snow Leopard from Apple's Online Store. Follow these instructions:
Drive Preparation and Install Snow Leopard
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. When completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard. Once you boot from Snow Leopard you should open Software Update and install all the available updates required. After you complete this and restart the computer open the App Store application in the Dock or Applications folder.
    8. Sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and password. Purchase and download Lion.
    9. After Lion's installer downloads, install Lion.

  • My 2010 imac does not recognise my time machine since I had the Seagate replacement hard drive. Any thought from anyone? The External hard drive is a 1 TB seagate

My iMac (2010 intel model) does not recognise or communicate with my external seagate drive as a time machine for back ups since I had the 1TB Seagate replacement hard drive as part of the replacement prgram with OSX LION 10.5.8 installed.
Is this because I need to update the time machine drive itself?

This excellent Support article may help you solve that TM problem:

Click on the hard drive on the desktop, then File > Get Info. What does it say about permissions?  If this is just a data drive you may want to consider "ignore ownership on this volume".
Otherwise I can only say I have not been reading good things about Seagate drives recently.  I have some of their rock-solid ones from about 10 years ago (still running well), but now...?

  • Apple has determined that certain Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems may fail.

    Hi
I got an e-mail stating that Apple has determined that certain Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems may fail, and that mine was one that may fail and to book an appointment with Genius to click here. So after making an appointment we then took out iMac to the shop affixing thirty minuets before appointment time and had to Waite until 12-45hrs. When we were told that we would have to leave the Mac with them for two to three days to replace the hard drive.
Can anyone advise, is this normal to make an appointment only to find that when you get to the Genius department  in the Apple shop they then say because of the amount of iMacs that have come in today it will take days to replace?

    Hi mende1
Thanks for replying but when anyone makes an appointment surely the work should be carried out then not to be told to come back days later especially when you have traveled over one hundred and fifty miles to get to the shops. It may have been a free replacement but the cost of petrol for the journey comes to more than one hundred euros.

  • Which imac?  Which hard drive?

Have an old purple imac with dead hard drive. Have removed drive, and would like to replace drive, but cannot determine which model imac it is, since the drive is not working. It's at least a 350, because it's slot-load. This drive is a Quantum 30 GB AT Fireball Plus AS, which i do not think is the original. As it is only used for word-processing these days, don't need 30 gb, but don't know how to determine which drive would be ok.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Improved Hard Drive Performance...KT3U2R

I have tried the recent tweaks to get my hard drive performance up. Someone mentioned to me that the on board controllers were not the most efficient and that I should spend 30 bucks on an external controller card to DRASTICALLY improve performance. I have two 80 GB Seagate Barracuda Drives. Does this sound like a logical conclusion to you?

Ignore it.  I've had and/or tested a ton of hard drives on VIA chipsets and from the KT133 on, they have all performed as well as on Intel chipsets, and in accordance with credible reviews.

Where can I find the serial numbers of the defective Seagate 1T hard drives that were in iMacs?
    I tried Seagate site.
Not the iMac serial #, I know about the recall program. We are looking at a refurbished (not Apple) iMac & it has a Seagate 1T HD,  naturally, we want to know if it is one of the bad ones.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Recently my keyboard on my macbook pro died. i backed up the machine to my Seagate 500GB hard drive, successfully, and sent the notebook in for repairs. Now that the macbook is repaired, i can read from the seagate, but not write to it. It says read only.

Recently my Macbook Pro's keyboard failed. Using my wireless keyboard, i managed to backup everything to my 500gb Seagate external hard drive. I sent the machine in, had the keyboard repaired, and now the machine is back, and i am loading my content back onto the macbook. My problem is that the drive is now read only, and i have searched for all the obvious fixes. The lock on the permissions secion of the info block on the drive. (not present). I have even tried disk utility, but all the options are greyed out.
I am a graphic designer, and so i use my external drive extensively to move artwork around, so it is important that i can make it writable. It worked perfectly on this very same machine, two weeks ago, and nothing has changed on the drive, so i can only assume it is a software issue on the operating system.
I have read through all the forums, etc, and can find nothing that works. I am loath to change anything on the drive, as it was working perfectly on this system before the system went in for its repair.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I use a seagate external hard drive with airport extreme?

I have a 1tb Seagate external hard drive and I connected it to the USB port at the back of my Airport Extreme. I opened Airport Utility and am now lost. How do I access the hard drive?
(I have a Macbook Pro running os x version 10.8.2)

The external hard drive must be formatted either in Apple's HFS+ or in Microsofts FAT32 in order for it to be recognized. You can format the drive by connecting it to your Mac and bringing up "Disk Utility".

I do not want to put these files on my Mac. How do I do this? Where do I put these files on my Time Capsule? Will it affect the functioning of my Time Capsule?

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.
    See info here.
    Q3 http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

  • How do I find outlook email on an Seagate external hard drive?

    Hi -
I have a Seagate external hard drive that I used to back up an old mac book pro.  I have found all my documents and was able to transfer them all to a mac  mini.  However I can not find the email files.  I had outlook and am trying to find the emails that were backed up on the external hard drive.  How can I find them?
    thank you!

If it is anything like Entourage was before it, it is in the Microsoft User Data folder in the Documents folder. Sadly with Entourage, there was a single Database file that managed contacts, e-mail and calendar in one file.  This all your eggs in one basket approach led me to stop using Microsoft's solution.  Hopefully Outlook was made less risky.
