IMac Security when Video chatting

Hi - I also posted this under the "iChat" forum, so I apologize for the double post; however, I think this question is more appropriate here.
I was video chatting with iChat last night and after I quit the program and put the computer to sleep, I woke up this morning to see the "file/disk sharing" window open on my desktop this morning - presumably asking me if I wanted to share my disk. I closed out the window (and shut down the computer) - but it had me thinking: I have to authorize file/disk sharing via iChat even if I'm already video chatting with the person who wants access.
I write to ask if this is correct. If so, does anyone have an idea why this window could have popped up? I'm on a WPA-secure network + running Norton Anti-Virus setup to detect phishers (although I did not have the Information Guard feature enabled in the firewall suite).
Thanks -

In iChat Preferences > Alerts it is possible to set Accept Automatically Files sent to you.
In the top drop down select "Incoming File Transfer near the Bottom
In the AppleScript box place a tick
Select Auto Accept in the option drop down.
This can of course be turned Off/Deselected if required.
It give no access it just accepts any file sent to you without asking.
The File Transfer window will open if closed.

  • I cant hear or see the other people when video chatting

I cant hear or see the other people when video chatting with skype, facebook video, messenger etc. it was working fine until it just stopped. I just moved house but have the same provider and still on the same account. any ideas?

also the video and sound comes up for a second but then it freezes and the audio becomes glitchy and interupted so cant really hear them.

  • I can't hear when video chatting, whats the deal?

I live far away from my friend, and we video chat. Sometimes I can't hear her, but she always hears me! Everything says that audio is fine, and connection is great but I still can't hear her. WHATS THE DEAL WITH THAT?

    Hi,
Lets talk  in broad terms first.
For a Buddy to hear you the Mic as to be connected and turned On in iChat
Taking that it is going to be an Internal Mic we can presume it is connected.
In iChat it is turned On in the Video menu (It will read Audio if you have no camera) and is the one to the right of the Buddies menu.
In here, Microphone Enabled (Or Audio Chat Enabled in  Lion) needs to be ticked.
The Mic then needs to be chosen in System Preferences > Sound > Input AND in iChat as the input/Microphone choice.
In iChat the choice is made in iChat menu > Preferences > Video/Audio Section > Microphone drop down.
In the System Preferences > Sound > Input the volume has to be high enough for you to be heard.
This tends to be a setting that moves the blue bars to about 3/4s of the way across. (At least 1/2 way and not banging in to the right hand end when you talk)
If you are doing things in other apps that use the mic differently or even a different Mic you may have problems if you don't manually change things back for iChat.
    So...
Transferring this to the Other end, your Buddy may not have the Mic on.
May have been doing something else Audio-wise and not changed things back.
May have reduced the volume for Input for another App and not reset it.
She may also have issues with the OS "Seeing" the Mic
She should check the System Profiler (Information in Lion) and see if in Hardware > USB the mic shows up
You can access this from the Apple Icon Menu and holding the ALT key down.
If it does not show up here then a SMC/PMU reset may be in order.

  • IChat 5.0.1 no audio when video chatting (one end only)

    Hello,
I have a Early Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66Ghz with OS 10.6.2. iChat version 5.0.1.
I am using a compatible webcam (Logitech Quickcam Pro 5000). I have full video and audio until I start a video chat.
The logitech Quickcam is selected in both the system preferences and the iChat preferences as the audio in source. I get visual feedback that the sound is being heard by the mini in both the system preferences and iChat. Sound-in is working.
We are trying to connect to a iChat 3 user using a iMac Dual Core 2 Duo. I do not remember the CPU speed.
The microphone check is on under the video menu. In the iChat preferences the audio indicator moves showing sound in.
The problem starts after we actually make a video chat connection. I can both see and hear the user on the iMac. However, the iMac user can only see me. As soon as the video connection is made, my sound indicator goes dead (no sound input showing) and the Microphone enabled menu option under the Audio menu is grayed out.
If I close the video chat and start an audio chat only, both ends can hear each other.
This is the same issue when trying to use a intel mac mini 1.5Ghz Core Solo and trying video chat with the iMac Core 2 Duo user. I am not able to verify that both intel Mac Mini's can see and hear each other as we only have one 10.6.2 webcam that works. Our other two only are recognized as a microphone.

Solved the issue on the mac mini 1.66 core duo. Still using the Quickcam 5000, but paired up a bluetooth headset to use as a microphone. That allowed video and audio to be sent from my end. Both parties could hear and see one another. Switched the sound input from the headset back to the Quickcam microphone and it worked. To make sure, I turned off bluetooth. I can now use video chat will video and sound using the Quickcam's built-in mic.

  • Weird Problem, new iMac, can't video chat but can on skype

My problem is simple. I cant share or video chat with my friends on iChat, but I can with Skype. I get a connection error everytime and even being on the phone with Apple trying to solve my problem, nothing worked. I tried changing my port number, and nothing worked. I cant video chat with anyone. Me and my freind were confused because we had just got new macs and 1 day later when we tried to video chat with eachother it didnt work. I tried the appletest03u3 thing and both of us could see the commercial. I'm runnning Leopard 10.5.8 and shes running Snow Leopard 10.6.2. What's the problem?

    Hi,
In System Preferences > Security > Firewall is the Firewall ON ?
If ON, in the Advanced Tab is Allow Signed App selected and IS iChat in the list ?
    Also is Stealth deselected ?
Also try setting iChat Preferences > Video section > Bandwidth Limit to 500kbps

  • IMac OSX & iPad Video Chat? Help!

Hi, I have an iMac with OSX on it and recently bought an iPad just before the iPad2 came out, I'm heading away shortly and wanted to take my iPad with me, hoping to use the iPad to do video caht with my family at home on the iMac?
I understand FaceTime will do this but my iMac does not have the new operating system to allow me to run the iMac app store to get Facetime on my mac, so I tried Yahoo Instant Messenger but the video chat option is disabled?
Does anyone here know of a good app or program I can use on my iPad and my iMac that will allow me to do internet video chat when I am away and in a WiFi area with my iPad back to my iMac at home? I want to do this without having to upgarde my operating system on the iMac.
    Thanks

I haven't used it but there is a Skype For iPad app - but if you have the first gen iPad then you won't have a video camera on it and it therefore won't have the FaceTime app (or do you mean that you recently bought the iPad 2, which does have a camera, just before the new iPad came out ?) the person on the other end of the call won't be able to see you (the Skype For iPad need iOS 4.3+).

  • White Screen when "video" chatting with PC

My friend is running AIM 5.9 on Windows XP and when I try to video chat with her, all she sees is a white screen, but still can hear me. I have rebooted my computer, and so has she. We used to not be able to connect at all, but she rebooted and now she can hear me.
    What should I do?

    Hi Brendon,
What has she done to set up AIM on her end ?
Has she enabled it though her XP firewall ?
Has she enable the ports AIM needs in her modem ?

  • IMac to PC  video chats - Yahoo or MSN?

Has anyone successfully used either Yahoo or MSN instant messaging for video chats, iMac to PC? If so, what are the specifics for making it work? Thanks for any help you can provide.
    NJZ

    Hi NJZ,
WElcome to the Apple Discussion pages
    This might help http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121907
Basically it is as Sandra says. Yahhoo! has moving pics ony and calls it Video and the Mac version of MSN does text only.
Tiger (10.4.x) allows you to use the Jabber service. This can be linked to the other servcies through things called Transports so that your iChat using Jabber (Server) can text chat to your MSN and other Buddies.
Both the next two links are a bit light on info about Sytem Requirements. But Java should not be a problem.
http://www.mercury.to/index.php?sub=WhatIsMercury is a java based application to work with MSN. Not sure of it's total capablilities as I have not tried it.

  • No sound when video chatting - 'microphone enabled' grayed-out during chat

Recently, whenever I video chat there is no sound on the other end. 'Microphone enabled' is grayed out. It is not grayed-out when I am not video chatting. All sound preferences appear to be set correctly. This problem just appeared recently.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Hi
Would tend to work towards deleting that file as part of a process.
The original reply was quite long in the first place and trying to incorporate more "If that does not work... " statements I felt would only make it more confusing.
    com.apple.ichat.plist
This holds all the info in the iChat Preferences except the Accounts pane stuff.
It also holds the results of a hardware check at each iChat Launch which includes checking the Internet Speed available and re-writing the .plist accordingly.
The Hardware Check also reads some info from the System Profiler info (at least the same places System Profiler gathers it's info).
This means if the System Profiler would not be able to "See" a Mic or a camera then any App cannot either.
Some of this info is held in the PRAM memory as are some volume settings and resetting the PRAM may have helped.
The reason I hold off suggesting the Deletion of the .plist is that it does hold so much info especially if you have changed the settings:-
Any Changes to the Font, it's colour, the background of the IM colour in Messages.
As Messages also show you any Background Pic you have for Text chats that gets deleted even though set in a Menu item
    The Overrides of incoming IMs
Save Transcripts and and sub items
Which Mic is selected in the Drop down in the Video Section. Same for Output choices if you have them (and cameras if you have two attached).
The Menu Bar icon and it's sub items in the General section.
Changing to Available at iChat Launch.
In the alerts section anything you have set to a Different sound or to have an Apple Script activated.
As the above can be set individually in the Buddy list (Highlight a Buddy and then do a Get Info (CMD+I keys) and Alert tab) you also lose those settings.
Several menu choices such as Enabling Screen Sharing (Video Menu) and the Show items in the View Menu, plus the Message style (Sub menu item in the View Menu).
These are what I consider to be the more important changes/losses deleting the .plist involves as I have changes in most of them.
Obviously not everyone does the same and the effect for you may be less involved.
It is hard to pinpoint the .plist itself as the item that is corrupt as it reads so many things from other sources.
It is possible that it is not getting written to after an update for some reason.
Upgrading from Leopard to Snow Leopard can leave some iChat 4 info in there. Mostly these are just floating bits of info at this point, but can contain the path to reading something that got moved in the OS Upgrade.
At the end of the day, like any other bit of info on your computer, it can get given erroneous info. This is most like to occur if iChat is subject to a Force Quit or suffers an Unexpected Quit or a particular chat fails dramatically.
There have been no updates to iChat since OS 10.6.3 when it got updated to iChat version 5.0.3 so I don't see it as an "update" issue.
    Summary.
It can be anything that causes it.
Of any changes to the OS then an Upgrade may be more likely.
Deleting the .plist is best reserved as a last resort as it holds so much info about settings you may have changed.
I have given you a list of many of the things that get changed.
It is most likely caused by some other info that the .plist has read into it by the iChat Launch.
Hope this explains things a bit further.
That's not to say that sometimes someone may post with enough info and clues to what they have done so far to suggest deleting it straight off.

  • Router shuts down when Video chatting

I'm trying to solve a problem with my Aunt's iChat. She just switched to Comcast from DSL and has a combo cable/wireless router (I think netgear). Anyway, she all the sudden cannot chat with me it says no data has been received for 10 seconds. Once in a blue moon we can connect for a few seconds.
She can connect to my Stepmom and chat with her. I can also connect to my stepmom just fine.
Now, here's the weird part. When my Aunt does get a video chat going if we stress it any more by asking to screen share, etc. her router just dies, all the lights go black and it reboots. Has anyone seen this? It's so bizarre like it can't handle it and says, "OK, I'm done!".

I have not seen a Netgear do that.
    1) Is the Mac Firewall set to Allow Specifics if she has Leopard.
    2) Why on earth did she change to Comcast ?
    3) Has she set the Netgear to something else other than UpnP ?
    4) Has she set the WAN page stuff ?
It will be the DOS or SPI setting on this page that needs disabling to stop the 10 sec error problem

  • Why does audio not work when video chatting?

For some reason the audio doesn't work when I video chat (skype and oovoo) The person can hear me but I can't hear them. How do I fix?

Check to see that your little one did not by accident get something (anything) in the headphone jack.  If there is debris in there (and it doesn't take much) it will make your device think a set of headphones is jacked in and you won't be able to hear through speakerphone or handset.
While holding it with the jack down, blow across the jack and tap gently.  It often will dislodge whatever is in there.

  • Logitech c615 with iMac & web-based video chat

How do I get a Logitech c615 to work with web-based video chat sites? Works with Skype, Face Time, etc. Can select it in Chrome browser but still uses builtin cam. Would use the builtin cam but your adjustments are tilting/twisting the monitor and moving closer/farther from the monitor. Really?! Is it possible to set an external camera as default for web-based video or is it yet another regret I have from switching from PC?

on a related topic - I have the same camera but I can't hear people when I facetime - it's ok with Skype though
    can you help?

  • My facetime works but when video chatting in ichat it doesn't, how can I fix it?

Everytime I try to video chat with someone on ichat my green light goes on but i don't get a notification from them. and when i send a notification it either doesn't show up on the other persons screen or when we do try to connect it says a error has occured oon the other persons screen. The thing i dont under stand is why i cant Video chat but i can facetime with no preblem on my mac.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD
