IMac Seems to be running slow!!!!

Hello All,
I purchased this imac less than a year ago and from the beginning I thought that the computer wasn't running as fast as I thought it should.
I started off with  4 gigs of ram and upgraded to the max of 16 gig of ram!
Things load very slowly in all my programs including the one i use most which is Logic!  It took me 2 hours and 45 Minutes to install Logic into my iMac when it only says to take about 15 minutes!
All my files and operations I use in logic take a long time to load and finalize!
Loading simple sounds and songs take very long to upload!
My Friend has a mac computer with less ram and processing speed as this and his computer is much faster!
What can be wrong with the computer and is there some kind of test I can run to see if everything is operating correctly?

25 Ways to Speed Up Your Mac
You may have a hardware problem, run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. I'm surprised you have waited a full year to address it though. If it's over a year old and not covered by AppleCare if it's hardware you will have to pay for any repairs.

  • My iMac seems to be running slower lately. Is there anyway to make it run faster?

My iMac seems to be running slower than when I first bought it. Is there something I can do to make it running faster? Also can anyone recommend a good antivirus software for Mac. Thanks.

The best antivirus application is none at all, keep OS X up-to-date and educate yourself about Malware by reading Viruses, Trojans and Malware - Prevention and removal: Apple Support Communities.
In order to speed up your iMac we need to know some basics about it first such as what version of OS X is installed, exactly which iMac you own, how much RAM it has, what size is the HD and how much free space on the HD. Without those fundamentals we would only be guessing.

My iMac seems to be running slow. Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Hello Patrick, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • IMac seems to be running slower then when i first got it!

    Hi,
Recently i bought an iMac G4 800MHz. When i first started using it, it was fast even on 256MB RAM.
Now i have had a few problems. I started to track the IP addresses that were accessing my computer and turned on the Firewall to stop the problem. It worked and the computer sped up and things went a little smoother. Then a few days ago my MSN started logging me out everytime i logged in so i changed my password. That worked. But my computer is still sluggish. I've updated all the security. I have also downloaded Clamxav and Zebra Scanner from the apple downloads. I began picking up some unusual IP address trying to access my computer.
I'm not sure if these IP addresses are ok or normal but the firewall denies access and i can still go to the normal websites i go to without harm.
Is there anything anyone can suggest?

    Welcome!
It's not very likely that a virus/malware is slowing you. Although "officially" above the minimum, 320MB RAM is light for Tiger. Of our various G4 Macs running Tiger, the least RAM installed is 768MB. The others range from 1G to 1.75G RAM. A low RAM count plus a hard drive that's filling up can really drag down the performance.
My best recommendation is to review the maintenance articles on this web site:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html
There are number of routine cleanup items you can do without a tech looking over your shoulder that will maximize your performance.

As Shootist pointed out, the system uses more power.
However, initially it will reindex the hard drive for spotlight, which will slow things down temporarily.
It also must rebuild caches that eventually will speed things up.
If it has completed indexing the hard drive (no dot pulsing in the spyglass), then there might be something wrong.
Start by booting into the Recovery HD (a partition created with Lion that has Disk Utility and reinstallation options) by holding down cmd-r when you restart. You can let go when the gray screen appears.
When it boots, select Disk Utility and Repair the drive.
If that doesn't speed things up, try re-installing the OS from the same Recovery HD. It won't delete any of your files, but it has helped some people whose Macs ran slow after installing Lion.
Also, how much memory do you have? Lion needs RAM so maxing your Mac out might also help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are actually shell commands -- little programs. They’re harmless, but they must be used exactly as given in order to work.
First and most important, don’t run these commands until you have verified that they’re legitimate. Never execute shell commands from an untrusted source without knowing what they do, or at least that they don’t do anything harmful. I’ve posted these same commands, with minor variations, many times on this site. You should be able to find other discussions in which they were used without ill effects. Do that before proceeding.
Some of the commands will probably line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    Step 4
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address will appear in the output of the above command. Change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • My imac seems to be getting slow on the internet. sometimes its good sometimes it acts up. is there anything that I can do to speed things up ?

my imac seems to be getting slow on the internet. sometimes its good, sometimes it acts up. is there anything that I can do to speed things up ? Is there software available to tune up my imac?

If this is Internet related, the slow downs can be caused by increased user activity on your ISP's server.
The more people on your ISP's server doing things on the Internet, the slower your connection will be.
Is there certain times of the day when you notice  the Internet is slow?
If so, that's probably the reason.
Also, do you share a connection with anyone else? Either on WiFi or Ethernet?
That will slow your connection, too!
Do you know what your Internet download speeds are?
Not a high enough bandwidth and slow downs will be more evident.
If on a WiFi, is the router you are you using 802.11 B, G, or N speeds?
Might be time from a newer, faster router?

  • My iPad 2 had trouble updating an app and now seems to be running slower

Earlier this evening, my iPad 2 had an app update notification for words with friends hd free.  I clicked the update but everything stalled.  It took forever to update the app and now my entire iPad seems to be running slow.  I have tried resetting it, updating it to 4.3.2 and nothing seems to work.  Should I perform a factory restore?

The whole iTunes store had issues all day, nothing was downloadable (video, apps, etc).
It had nothing to do with your iPad.
A reinstall should still put you at 4.3.2.

Do you "defrag" apple computers like other computers? My laptop seems to be running slow, and someone suggested I defrag it to get rid of "cookies" that can slow it down.

You are confusing two different things.
RAM is memory, not hard drive space.
To see how much free space you have open any Finder window and it will tell you at the bottom of the window.
Or you can look in Disk Utility.

  • Ever Since I installed 10.5 My computer seems to be running slow

ok so i have a had leopard installed for about a week and a half or so. It seems that ever since i installed it my macbook seems to be running slower alot slower. I have 2 gb of memory in it. Does and one have any ideas about y or what i could do?

Sadly, mine has not fully recovered. It was abysmal when I first installed Leopard - it tried to do backups continuously. That went on for a week, and nothing else would run. programs would open partially and just hang, or freeze, or go stupid.
I had 1.25 Gig of RAM then, and I was ready to trade it in on an old Amiga. But I worked with it, upgraded memory to !.75 Gig, unplugged the external drive to stop the endless backups, and now - well now it runs slightly better than a bad copy of Windows 98.
This is a G4 tower, 877 MHz. duel processor. But the spinning rainbow (beach ball?) seems to be my constant companion. Often, the cursor freezes on the screen for more than a minute - very frustrating.
I have also had to turn off the energy savers, both CPU and screen. With those on, it would sometimes not wake up without a hard reboot.
I am looking forward to the next version.

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It is not safe to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. For early MBA models, you may need a USB optical drive or Remote Disc. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to create a bootable USB device and boot the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can boot from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to boot from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In thePartition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    3. Other issues
If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

My iPhone 4s seems to be running slower and crashes after the ios6 upgrade.  The power off button does not appear when I try to power it off, the screen just goes blank.

Mine seems to be running faster after the upgarde although i am facing battery drainage. Best you do a hard reset to the phone and this should solve the issue. Apparently if you upgrades via OTA, there were some issues. hope this helps
