Imac sees no wi-fi networks. Other computers do! Some input needed!! Thanx!

Hi people.
I just got a intel imac 20inch with an airport extreme card. A few weeks ago i tried looking for networks.
At home i found 8 wi-fi networks in my area with help of a windows laptop. My mac...detected nothing.
I went back to the shop (a shop with apple certified people) to let them check it.
Their conclusion was that my card was functioning correctly.
The receipt stated that they streamed a movie through airport and that there was no noticable delay.
Their airport base station was located a few floors above their technical dept.
I got my mac back and i went straight to home. Same problem. No networks whatsoever...
Then i went to my friends house. He's got a old dell with a sitecom wlan card.
He can find 4-5 networks in his area. My mac can only find his network. I use Istumbler + Spectrum Widget and the strenght is 50% on a distance of 1,5m (5feet) to his router!
How is this possible?
I know that to access another network you need some data. But to detect a network with it's SSID on you just have to turn airport on to see it. Right?
I reinstalled osx and i am doing a software update right now. To 10.4.7.
Maybe that helps but i doubt it.
Can anyone shed some light?
Should i go directly to apple and have them look?
Thanx!!!
Intel Imac dual 2,0 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

The software update is done. No improvement.
I saw another post with an answer from duane wich made me think that the antenna of my airport extreme card is not inserted properly.
Unfortunately the new imac's are not opened easy.
I hope that's it. After all.....they did not open my mac. Sigh.
I'm gonna call apple care.

airport (snow) network with g3 ibook, intel imac and g4 imac. g4 was tuned off for couple days and will now not see home wireless network. airport symbol appears gray and it shows up in system profile, so i think it is functioning. in addition, the other computers, as well as this problematic g4 imac have always picked up 3 or 4 other neighborhood networks. but now this g4 imac will not see any of these other networks when the other 2 computers do.
i have tried the airport admin utilities and network assistant in preferences with not luck. the fact this computer is not seeing any of the networks that the other 2 are picking up makes me think this is a hardware problem ( card, wire). before i take it appart, are there any recommendations. thanks.

I also have an airport (snow) network with G3 iBook, intel iMac and G4 iMac. I also have been able to pick up 3 or 4 neighborhood networks with all three computers. After a recent power outage, my G4 was no longer able to see any of the networks (my intel imac and ibook G3) automatically reconnected to my home network. My G4 cannot seem to see the airport. I have run airport admin utilities and network assistant (diagnostics and assist me) with no luck. Can anyone help us?

  • IBook G3 Cannot Detect Networks -- Other Computers Can

My boss's iBook G3 (dual-USB) cannot detect networks. Often the airport icon will not even load up in the menubar, and sometimes it loads, but shows no available networks. We are in a building with dozens of networks, but nothing shows up. Two other computers are accessing our network via Airport just fine. Any thoughts? This is driving us nuts! Any help would be much appreciated.
(By the way, this iBook has successfully connected to our network in the past. Yesterday and today it has just started misbehaving. Thanks again for your help.)

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply! The network settings have not been changed, so I don't think that it is an issue of b vs. g.
After leaving the iBook asleep for about an hour, I woke it and managed to get a signal (a few other available networks also showed up). Then I put it back to sleep for a few minutes to see if I would get a signal again. When I woke it up, the signal flashed from 4 bars to none, and the computer froze. Does this fact, and the fact that the Airport icon in the menu bar has been very, very slow to load (about 5 minutes) suggest that there is something wrong with the Airport software on the iBook?
    Thanks for your help!

  • How to be Sure my iMac sees my Preferred Wireless Network Each Bootup

I am still setting up my new iMac and deciding what to keep and what not to keep from my previous primary computer (G4 iMac running Tiger). The old G4 is still hardwired to my D-Link wireless router (DIR 615) and my new 21.5 inch is connecting wirelessly. The connection is basically really good and the iMac picked it up right away upon initial setup. I will eventually move the new iMac into the old G4's place and wire it up.
Here's my occasional difficulty. Sometimes, when my old G4 is off and I boot my new iMac I get a message saying something like my preferred network cannot be found. Usually I am given an opportuity to then log into said preferred network and it works fine. I, as best I can tell, have it designated the preferred (and so far the only) network in Network preferences. It seems like when my old G4 is already booted up that this is not a problem and my new iMac immediately connects.
As an aside, a household iPod touch and an Xbox 360 have no problem connecting with my D-Link regardless of whether the G4 is booted or not. The status of the G4 may just be a red herring and I may have just overlooked something in the network setup on my new iMac, although there really was no setup to speak of, it just worked from the start.
    Thanks for any ideas.
    Regards,
    Steve M.

It says my 3.01 is current and no updates are available. It does actually give me this message.
Since my router is basically working OK now, I guess I won't pursue updating the firmware anymore than doing this check. Thanks.
    Regards,
    Steve M.

We want to share a wireless printer by a group of seven IMacs but do not want any other computers to have acess to the printer . How to do that?

Get an HDMI switcher. Plug in the ATV directly to the TV and then use the switcher on the other input.

  • ICal, iPhone and other computers

Is there a way to elect for appointment alarms on the iPhone and at the same time NOT to have alarms set on my other computers?
I really need appointment reminders on iPhone for sure but I don't want alarmed reminders on Mac Pro or MacBook Pro if you know what I mean (it seems a bit of an avoidable chore).
Maybe an option to set alarms on iPhone, Mac Pro, MacBook Pro or combinations of each?

    Bump.
    The situation can be:
starting up MBP after a while and a bundle of appointments appear onscreen.
Some may find that useful. I think it is an avoidable chore unless one elects to have all appointments appear on all computers. Having appointments appear on an electable subset of available computers seems doable?

I did PRAM and MC reset, modem reset, etc., all the usual ju-ju. I also cannot connect on my local network to any other computer. Yet Network control panel says I am connect to the modem, and Network Diagnosis says I am connected to the Internet. It's like the blind man who has eyes that cannot see. BTW, I am not some newbee. I have been a Machead since the early nineties and set up a half dozen networks, including the one I am using at home to which the iMac mysteriously is there but not. This has me stumped! I am considering going back to 10.7!

My Wi-Fi connection on my iMac drops frequently. The other computers in the house do not have this problem. If I go into the Network Preferences and choose my Network it connects immediately but it does not remember the setting and I must reselect my network frequently.

The iMac picks up a wireless signal from the back of the screen, so you would want to avoid having it close to a wall, or in a confined area where the wireless signal cannot easily reach the iMac's antenna.
We don't know how far the iMac is from your wireless router, or how many walls or other obstructions might be in the signal path that would limit the quality of signal that the iMac receives.
Nor do we know whether you might have a cordless phone near the iMac, or whether you may be using a wireless keyboard and/or mouse....all of which can interfere with the wireless signal.
Can you provide some more info on this?

  • IMac isn't loading a specific website (can't connect to that server), regardless of browser, though the same website will load on other computers on same network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?

Our iMac isn't loading a specific website (we get a message saying it can't connect to that specific server), regardless of browser (I've tried it in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox). However, the same website, which is for a major medical provider, loads without any issue on our other computers on the same wireless network. Is it an issue with the iMac's settings? All other websites seem to be loading without issue on the iMac.

... Is it an issue with the iMac's settings?
Possibly. Make sure you are not using a proxy server. Look in Safari Preferences > Advanced > Proxies > "Change Settings..." This will take you to the applicable Network Preferences. Make sure that nothing is selected in the "select a protocol to configure" list. It should look like this:
    Still not working?
Locate your Terminal app. It is in your Utilities folder. Open Terminal.
In Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item'
This will produce a list of all your account login items.
While you are in Terminal, copy (triple-click) and paste the following line:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
This will produce a list of all non-Apple kernel extensions. There will be few, if any.
Post the results of the above.

  • My Macbook no longer sees other computers in my network

    Hello,
I hope this question isn't too strange or difficult. This morning I booted up my Macbook to work on some grad school assignments in a different part of the house since my son was watching TV where my desktop computer is. All of my files are on my desktop, and up until today I have never had an issue connecting to my other computer to access them. Today was different. The "Network" icon does not show up when I open a new Finder window, and my other computer does not show up under "Places" in the Finder window. I have not done anything different, which is what baffles me. I have a wifi network at home which I am currently connected to.
Can anyone help me see other computers in my network again?

The "Network" icon does not show up when I open a new Finder window
Open up System Preferences/Internet & Wireless/Network - select Airport & put a check mark next to *"Show Airport status in menu bar."*
Right below the status box click on the "Assist Me" button and then the Diagnostic button. Follow the instructions.

  • New imac sees network, not internet

Just got my beautiful 24" Imac home, and I can't get online. 2 PCs on the same network get online fine, one via ethernet and one wirelessly. My Mac sees the other computers, but can't see the internet. I've used the network assistant to no avail. I've even manually entered my IP and DNS info (I have a handful of static IPs available). It didn't help. Any ideas? I'm dying to officially make the switch!

yes, I did that, but thanks. It won't connect via wireless or ethernet.

  • G5 No longer connecting to airport and other computers on network

My G5 dual 2.0 (mid 1994) was connecting to the internet through airport extreme base station until Saturday. I had upgraded it to leopard (archive & Install) then up to 10.5.1 last week and all was good. After bootup today it doesn't see any other computers on the network and it doesn't get email and doesn't access the web. When I check network settings I notice that WPA Personal is selected but not WPA2, so I tried to change that but it didn't seem to change after applying after a restart. Then I checked to see if DHCP setting were configured. This is where things seem odd, I can't renew the DHCP lease like I can on my MacBook Pro (running current version of tiger) that I am typing this with. I tried to make a new airport connection, tried using a different account, checked system profiler (sees card and all), but no connection to email or internet. Is there a firewall configuration that I need to set differently? Also, verified permissions. Is there something else that needs to be done or is there a ugly bug stopping the show?

i had the same problem after installing leopard on my macbook. it would not connect to the internet! i called applecare today and actually got someone who knew how to help me. he said that you have to reset the parameters whatever that means! and this is how you do it:
1 - turn off your computer
2 - turn on computer and immediately hold down these four buttons simultaneously: Option Key, Apple Key, P, R - then when you hear the second "ding" , LET GO OF THE FOUR BUTTONS.
i did it and the macbook is connecting to the internet just fine. i hope this helps!!!!!!!!

  • XP/Pro box doesn't see other computers on network after running CiscoConnect on it

Got a new E4200 on September 13 to provide internet and networking to a small business network.
There are 2 wired computers, one an XP/pro and the other a Win 7/64 bit.  Both worked straight out of the box in that  both had access to each others' files after plugging them into the E4200.  Two other wireless computers were connected using CiscoConnect, one a Vista and the other a Win 7, and all was fine.  All computers were able to see each others' file. Also managed to get a wireless Canon printer working even though CiscoConnect wasn't able to find it.
After I realized I didn't run CiscoConnect on the XP, I did so using the USB key created on the Win7 box and the result was that the XP box doesn't see any of the other computers although all the other computers can see the XP files.  After uninstalling CiscoConnect on the XP and rebooting, the XP can't access the other computer files but it can still access the internet and the wireless Canon printer that CiscoConnect can't find.  Rebooting or powering off/on the router didn't change this state.
Would appreciate any ideas in getting the XP back into the network.
    Firmware Version:
    1.0.02 build 13  May 24, 2011

    Update on above problem:
Performed a System Restore on the XP and partial networking functionality was restored.  The XP box now sees the Vista and the XP Explorer can see all computers under  the Workgroup.  Probing the Win 7 computers from XP's explorer the XP returns the following: message
\\Win7a is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resourc. Contact the a...
This message doesn't mean much to me as I have limited networking experience but somebody here might understand this clue.

  • Can't find other computers on network

Hi. Every once in a while (aka, 1/4 times) I can't see any other computers on my network. I am using a MacBook (with Tiger, of course), my brother has a a G5 iMac with Panther, there's an XP PC, and a win98 PC on the network. I access the network wirelessly and everyone else is wired to the router.
What happens is I that I go to the network tab in finder and wait but no computers show up, not even the other mac. I restart and that usually fixes it. The problem happens at totally random times.
The problem also occurs on the iMac, with the same behaviour.
Any ideas about what is happening?
    -Eric

I don't think that's it. Remember, it also happens to the iMac -- and it's wired to the router. When it happens the iMac isn't even able to see the other PC's, which are also wired.
This problem also occured before I got the MacBook -- it happened on the iMac. And at that time we only had a wired router. So, I was trying to access a PC with XP over a wired router with the iMac and it still happened. So, I'm guessing it's a problem with OSX (and not just Tiger because the iMac has Panther).
Oh and by the way, we currently use a wireless-g router by Trendnet (model number TEW-432BRP). It has 4 wired ports for ethernet cables and an antenna for wireless.

  • Connecting to other computers on network doesn't work as expected.

    This is kind of interesting.
I do this: From Menu Go > Network
Then I choose either my iMac or MacBook Pro and double click the user name for my home folders on the other computers.
A window opens up and the bottom right of the window the little twirling busy thing just goes and goes and goes.
I notice the server icon on the Desktop and double click it and everything is there an access is fast, just like I expected from the first window that popped up. But it's still there, blank, with a little twirly thing (very technical).
I get what I'm after, but it doesn't work the way it should.

Try keeping your shares from sleeping during the expected period of use--assuming they are. If this procedure works, then you'll need to decide between the "lesser of the two evils."
