IMac sees the ethernet but won't connect to the internet

we had a power outage that crashed the imac.   now it won't connect to the internet.  the imac can see the ethernet connection.   we have several other apple and dell devices that all see the internet so it's not cabling or hardware.    it's a cable modem connection that uses automatic DHCP configuration.  I've created a new Location setting with no change.   I'm assuming that there is a corrupted file since all the other systems connect fine.  any idea which one it may be or what else I should be looking for?

Shot in the dark, but did you try an SMC reset?

  • My iMac can discover WiFi but won't connect how do i fix this?

My iMac will discover WiFi connections, i type in the right password but it wont connect how do i fix this?

A lot of older iMacs only support the original Airport, and not Airport Extreme.   PowerPC (PPC) iMacs that have extreme are limited to 802.11g, and can't do 802.11n.   Those with the original airport only support 802.11b, and the insecure WPA/TKIP or WEP encryption, and are better served via ethernet to a WiFi ethernet bridge.
The airport card typically is not built-in.  Verify with http://www.everymac.com/ what the status of your iMac was, and/or see this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2256
Intel iMacs that are Core2Duo can be upgraded to 802.11n with the 802.11n enabler.  You'll have to contact the Apple Store online nearest you to determine if you can still download it, as it is not on their website.
To determine if you already have it, see this tip:

  • Windows XP laptop sees wireless network but won't connect

I set up a wireless network on my airport extreme using my MacBook. The McBook runs great on the wireless network. My old Dell laptop running Windows XP sees the wireless network I created (with full signal strength) but every time I hit "connect" I get the following error message, "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again." When I referesh the list, the wireless network is still there, and i still cannot connect, getting the same error message.
    Any suggestions?

Hello apetera. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Per chance are you using WEP for your wireless encryption?
If so, one of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice versa.

  • ARD sees remote computer but won't connect

I previously used ARD 2 to connect to my Mom's Mac and all worked well. She recently had to replace her router due to a bad power supply and during that time frame I also upgraded to ARD 3. Ever since I have been unable to gain access to her computer. (I did install the ARD 3 client for her.)
If I'm at her house and connected to her router with my laptop I can gain access, but if I'm at home I cannot.
I checked the port forwarding settings on her router last night and both ports 5900 and 3283 were set to "both". In addition I read where ARD uses port 5988 so I turned forwarding on there as well. When I got home I was still unable to get to her computer.
I'd used DynDNS since she's on DSL and doesn't have a static IP. When I try to connect using the DynDNS hostname it shows up in the ARD scanner, but the IP address is not what her computer is using at the time. I went to WhatIsMyIP.com to get the actual IP address she was using and I can enter that and her computer name will show up in the ARD list so it is seeing her computer is out there, but when I try to connect to it the connection fails. I tried removing her from ARD and re-adding and that didn't help either. I also have ARD on my work computer and am unable to access her computer from there so I don't think the problem is on my home network.
Any ideas on what I might be missing here? I don't know whether this had to do with the router change or the ARD update. I only get in to her house periodically and would like to get this resolved so I can help her when she has computer problems. Thanks!

I checked my router last night and all settings were ok. I had previously saved screen shots of all my router settings and will compare them to my Mom's. I still need to check on her end and I won't get in that way until the weekend, so I'll post back on Monday to let you know what I find.
On the address I'm entering in ARD, this is the part I'm not understanding. I had set my Mom up with a DynDNS account so that I wouldn't need to enter a specific IP address when trying to access her computer since her IP is not static. Prior to the router change and ARD update I simply entered in her DynDNS host name in ARD to access her computer. It would connect fine and show me the IP address assigned by her ISP. Now when I enter in her hostname, the hostname shows up with a 74.x.x.x address, which is not what her ISP is assigning if you look at her computer. It typically begins with 68.x.x.x. If I have her go to WhatsMyIP and check the assigned IP and enter that in ARD I can see her actual computer name and the correct IP address, but still can't connect to it. Weird.
Anyway, I'll post back on Monday after I get a chance to look at her settings this weekend and see if we can resolve anything. Thanks again for the help Dave!

  • Satellite L300-135 sees WLan network but won't connect

Well, (new laptop) initially it worked with my BT hub at home... then decided to stop working - recieves no signal or response from the router - even though other laptops in the house can connect without any problem
and now the wireless does not work - ie. I can see the wireless connection but cannot connect.
I'm sure the wireless is not switched off (before anyone suggests so)
I searched for more up to date drivers but nothing seems to work.
    Please help!

    Hi
First of all you should check if your WLan card has been recognized properly.
I mean you have to check it in the device manager!
Your WLan card should be the Realtek 802.11g(RTL8187B)
Download and install the newest WLan driver from the Realtek page.
    Then update the BIOS.
Finally configure all the WLan settings again.
In device manger -> WLan card properties -> Advanced tab disable the power saving settings and check other settings which could affect the connectivity.
    Good luck

Glad to hear it is all straightened out. You are right about the upgrade cost. That is one reason why Adobe switched to monthly licensing—no more upgrade cost <g, r, & d>. Of course we do have nearly monthly product upgrades. It is almost like playing whack a mole.

  • We use an Airport Extreme in my office, which works fine for me. Occasionally we need to have more than one computer running on it, but for some reason it won't connect to the internet. It says we have internet, but won't connect to wifi. What's going on?

I use my computer everyday in our office and have no issue connecting to the internet/wifi, but when my boss comes in and tries to connect it doesn't work. It tells her she has internet, but won't connect to the wifi. We've tried a few different tactics(the basic ones I've seen on here), but nothing seems to be working for us. My computer automatically connects to our wifi.
Just recently the Airport Extreme has started with the blinking amber colored light on the front, which I believe means something is wrong? Can anyone help us figure out what's going on and why we can't get my boss' computer to connect as it should?
    Thank you!

    Here's an update:
Now the light is not blinking. It's a solid, consistant green. I don't know if it helps to narrow it down or anything, but I just figured I'd mention it.

  • I paired my apple Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad but when trying to connect back to iMac it shows paired but I cannot connect to it

I paired my apple Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad.  Now I paired it with my iMac it shows paired but I cannot connect to it?

    Hello:
    Try this on your iPad:
    Unpairing a Bluetooth accessory
If you've paired iPad with an accessory that you no longer wish to use, you can unpair the accessory.
From the Home screen choose Settings > General > Bluetooth. If Bluetooth isn't on, turn it on.
Choose the accessory and tap Unpair.

  • IMac hogging the internet connection from PC

I have a serious issue with my iMac hogging the internet connection from my boyfriends PC. If I download he can't even look at a youtube video. Does anyone have a solution or an explanation?
    It's driving us both mad!

Hmm. Basically it sounds like when you connect you 'steal' the Internet connection and I can think of two ways that would happen. Open System Preferences and select the  Network tab. Now click on the advanced button then in the top tab click on TCP/IP and you'll something like this:
Note that in the graphic above, next to Configure IPv4 you see Using DHCP. I'm wondering if yours is set differently. For that matter, I'm wondering how his computer is set up too.

  • How can I set up my macbook air to use programs on my iMac over the internet?

I have a program (MacPractice) on my iMac. It's running the server program while my MacBook Air is running the client software which has to be connected via the wireless (last Gen Time machine) in my office to function. What do I need to do to be able to access my iMac over the internet when I'm out of the office? I was told that I would need to set up a DNS (?) address to log in. I use a Comcast internet modem which goes through my Time Machine wireless router to my iMac. Is this even possible to do with the current setup?

Ok, in this case your iMac will be performing as an application server. As such, it will need to be "reachable" from the Internet. This is typically done in one of two ways: 1) It is assigned a static Public IP address, or 2) It is assigned a static Private IP address.
In the first method, your iMac will be like any other publically available server (Web, E-Mail, etc.) To accomplish this, you would need for your ISP to provide you with a static Public IP. You can then configure the AirPort Extreme to allow remote clients to access this server by creating a DMZ for the server. This would fully expose your iMac to the Internet.
In the second method, you would assign the iMac a static Private IP address that is just outside of the default range of the AirPort's DHCP service. You would then configure the AirPort for port mapping. Which ports that will be needed to be mapped will depend on what your application's support tells you.

  • IPhone 5 Wi-Fi problems: "sees" the network, but won't connect

    Hi everybody,
For the past 3 days I've been having sudden problems with my brand new iPhone 5 (version 6.0.2 {10A551}).
It just won't connect to the internet, no matter what I do. It actually "sees"the availble networks, but when I put the password in, it says"Unable to connect to the network".
I tried Resetting Network settings and All Settings, to no avail.
The irony is that I get Facebook notifications, App of the day Notifications, occasional mails, but nothing else. Email sync is erratic, and always with the little round circle where the WiFi icon should be. No Whatsapp, Viber, etc.
I'm totally baffled and equally desperate.
    Can anyone help me please?
Many thanks in advance and Happy New Year to all thread readers.
    Joyce

Try restarting your router first, turn it off for a minute then back on. then go to settings on your phone, then wifi, tap on the blue arrow to the right of your wifi 's  name, then tap forget this network. Then go to the home screen, Then hold the home and off button down until the apple symbol comes up. Then go back into wifi and try to connect.
