Imac share monitor problem

My wife has an iMac G3-266, tray loading Fruit model with a bad monitor (flyback transformer problem). I have a multiple scan 15av display I was using on my G3 233 beige desktop computer that I have hooked up the imac and it works just fine in this mode. I don't use my G3 much anymore because I also have an iMac G5 that I use most of the time but when I want to use my G3 for something, it is a real pain to switch the monitor cable from the iMac to the G3 and back again. A while back I had bought some 15 pin monitor cables and a manual data switch box so I could just switch from one to the other but if I try to use that setup the monitor setting go bad. The colors are off, the screen is blurry and no matter how you try to adjust it won't work. If I disconnect the setup and try to hook back up the imac, it takes several reboots before the monitor goes back to normal settings. It is a real mess. Any ideas why this is not working? From what I have read on the internet, I should be able to share the monitor but obviously I cannot. Thanks for the help.
Dave

The switch box is probably not passing all signals.
Does this monitor use a VGA connector? Do you have an Apple video to VGA adapter on the iMac's internal video port, like this one?
[Apple video to VGA adapter|http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Switchable-Apple-Mac-to-VGA-Video-Adapter-TVCS- 183_W0QQitemZ360087077864QQihZ023QQcategoryZ3762QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZVie wItem]
If so, you should get a separate VGA display for the two computers. If the monitor supports it, the video on a tray-loader can be set as high as 1600x1200. I got a 21-inch CRT at a computer surplus store for around $100, and that was about 3 years ago. They were giving away VGA 15-inch displays.

  • IMac display monitor problems, left side darkens and flickers

I have an iMac with 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3,  AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63). The last year the left side of the monitor was flickering intermittingly. I didnt think much of it. Then in July, one big flicker caused the left side of the screen to darken slightly. Fortunately, my AppleCare was still in effect,. I contacted Apple and they had me zap the PRAM and also reboot into Recovery mode. The darkness was still apparent. So I took it to an authorized dealer and they fixed the display. Now tonight, one big flicker happened and I noticed that the left side had darkened a little again. I zapped the PRAM and it seems to be ok now, but I'm afraid that the same thing will soon happen. And of course the AppleCare has expired finally. Has anyone encountered this?  I have four external hard drives on a shelf right next to the display. This sounds silly, but could they be affecting the display in any way? I moved them a few feet below where they were, hoping that they werent the cause of the problem.
Any advice would be most welcome.
    Thanks!

had zapped pram not helped then I would had said that the lcd panel itself was close to the end of it's life and replacement would be required but since it did then I have no real cause to believe the issue would come back

  • IMac G5 monitor problem blue tinge on whole screen

I have a video display problem. I saw flashing and image tearing and then things settled down with everything having a bluish color added to it. I connected an external monitor and that display has normal colors. Does this indicate that the problem is with the computer's video display or could it be some cheaper component that has the problem? Since the computer is over 4 years old, if the repair is expensive, I'm inclined to put the money into a new computer.

Is there any difference if the second display is NOT connected (assuming you normally use them together with monitor spanning)?
If it's +late 2004+, it would be this model

(or one of the other configs in this lineup). You can open the back on these iMac models using Apple-provided instructions.

The one for Inverter may be most relevant, since the inverter provides power to the LCD backlighting lamps. So you might look inside to make sure there is not accumulated dust or any other obvious problem with things like internal cable connections. Other than that, I can't think of anything else to try.

  • IMac g4 1.25mhz monitor problem

I have an iMac G4 1.25mhz. The power supply died. I replaced it, and the boot tone plays, but the monitor is black. No power light on monitor either. Help!

I have been reading and researching, and I noticed that the solution to iMac G4 monitor dark problem is too often to plug in an external monitor. Most of us iMac owners can afford a "better" computer, but would rather have the ORIGINAL iMac 100% working. Display and all.
My problem is (I believe) the inverter assembly, or the video cable. From what I've read, the inverter could just go out, or in the re-assembly process the video cable could very possibly get pinched or otherwise damaged. The video cable is VERY delicate.
I don't know how to tell which is the problem.

  • Share Monitor not... Sharing

    Hi,
I'm having a problem with Share Monitor basically not doing anything.  If I try to export a project via the share menu, the small progress bar opens and states "Waiting", Share Monitor opens and then that's it.  Nothing.
I see in the left column "This Computer" and when I select it there are no batches or anything.  If I send the file to Compressor X and specify the device and destination, submit, it shows up under the list of priorities then it stops with no errors and more importantly, no exported files.
No error messages are generated regardless of what method I try to export the project so I have no idea where to start troubleshooting.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Dear Mr Brown,
I have also a problem of Sharing on my FCP X 003, OS LION : it's accept to share a 3 mn projects, but don't take a 52 mn movie. The Projet is identified on the Export Windows, the "wait" and "treatment" lines start on the small window but no "bar" of process in progress appear. It can takes hours with no result. The system seems not to recognize the file physically. I my previous Imac 27 under Snow Leopard and FCP X 002 I did not have any of these problems. Memory struture of my new Imac with OS Lion : SSD Disk for Applications such as FCP and a Internal Tera Disk for Data like FCP Events and Projects. I used the feature "relinks the files" to tie FCP with the Events and Project. The 52mn project works perfectly on the Timeline but cannot be exported except through QuicKTime export process...What do you think. I would be very happy I you can spend a few time responding me.

  • IMac external monitor not working after lion upgrade

    Hi,
I have had an external monitor hooked up to my 09' imac for over a year now. I upgraded to Lion and ever since then it hasnt worked but one other random time when I moved and hooked everything back up. Im very tech savy, but this just doesnt make sense. Have combed google to find a solution. I have a Samsung 22in moniter and all the blue power button does is blinks at me. I am using a miniDisplay to DVI connection.
Does anyone have any suggestions other than resetting the ram?

I guess it's possible you've got some kind of hardware problem.... but not likley given it started with you installed your OS.
Here's a few things to try:
    1. see if you can borrow another monitor just to be sure your monitor isn't the problem.
    2. in System Prefs, and the Displays pane, click on the Detect Displays, then then the Gather Displays. If you get two diffenet display panes, that would lead me to think it's a monitor problem.
    3. Lastly, disconnect your 2nd display, and restart. Then Shutdown, reconnect it, and see if that helps.
    and of course..
    4. make sure that all of your connections and adaptors are tight.

  • What is the technical 'cause' of the infamous iMac black screen problem?

Can anybody shed some light on what technical malfunction exactly causes the infamous iMac black screen problem? The common solution seems to be a logic board replacement. But what exactly is broken on the logic board? Is it the Geforce chip? Some kind of external driver circuitry? Or something completely different?

I was referring to the many problems also described in this thread (and also in many other places):
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=196774&tstart=0
In specific I am referring to machines where all of this applies:
    - internal monitor stays black after power-on
    - computer boots normally
    - external display works normally
    - internal display backlight works and can be adjusted in brightness, but all pixels are black
    - PRAM reset doesn't help
    - NVRAM reset doesn't help
    - PMU reset doesn't help
    - reinstalling OS / booting from CD doesn't help
    - machines with this problem sent to repair come back with a replaced logic board
I'm looking for more information on the technical cause of the exact problem as stated above. So I can attempt to repair my iMac

  • Share Monitor Issues

I would love to rending my media on both computers that I have available, I believe I do this by choosing My Computer Plus.  I have them both seeing each other in the Share Monitor.  However, there is something wrong.  I get this following issue if I choose no background rendering, or background rendering on another computer on my network.  How do I fix this issue?  Is there a way that I can clear the share monitor history or reinstall the share monitor because I am having tons of issues. Thanks!

    This will 'reset' FCP X.
Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and perfectly safe, both to download and use).
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
With Preference Manager, you can backup the Prefs when FCP X (or any of the Apple Professional Applications) are working normally. Then when either of the applications are acting strangely, Trash the Preferences, then Restore from your backups (just a mouse-click).
If you trash the prefs and don't restore them, you will need to manually restore all your FCP X settings again, so it's a great idea to backup Preferences from time to time when FCP X is working well, then your backups are up to date.
Doesn't fix every problem, but it fixes a lot.

  • Where is the share monitor?

When I am exporting a film in FCPX to a DVD, the Share Monitor button dosen't show in the processing window. Also when the processing is done the DVD disc is still empty. I have been able to burn DVDs before in FCPX.
Please help me fix this problem!
it is supposed to be a "Share monitor" button next to the "Cancel" button

The monitor is available but it says that I have 0 batches even dough I'm processing a project.
Trashing it with Preference Manager didn't seem to work.
When I first discovered the problem I updated FCP to 10.0.5, but it didn't solve anything.
    Some other information:
It seems like I can't export my project in any way. Tried to export a DVD to the hard drive with no results. The Share Monitor just says that I don't have any batches. However when I try to process a DVD the processor starts to work and space is taken from my hard drive even dough no new files can be found.
    Appreciate your help!

  • IMac CRT monitor has "the blues" -literally-how to repair? Or should I?

This week I tried to upgrade my 6 yr old iMac (purchased Jan 2000,350mhz & 64 MB, slot loading CD drive). My nephew helped me to put in a memory card (it's now 192 MB) and we successfully installed OS 10.2. My goal was to upgrade so that I could use DSL and network with my new Powerbook G4. After restarting once and verifying that OS 10.2 was working properly, we shut the iMac down and set to work connecting the DSL modem, and setting up the wireless connection on the Powerbook. All went well until I powered up the iMac; I got no chime with a completely black screen. I shut the power down, restarted and got a chime and a screen with only dark blue & black as the colors. OS 10.2 seems to be working just fine, and I successfully connected to the DSL network through the Ethernet port, and even set up the email account with the server! I can surf the web, but only in blue & black! I tried resetting the monitor on the control panels, but can only reset brightness, all colors appear as dark blue!! In the course of the evening we also once had only red & black and once only yellow & black. But now it has settled in to all dark blue & black on screen. I called a local Apple technician, and he said that it was most likely the video card on the logic board, and that it would cost about $300-400 to repair it. Also that the monitor problem was most likely in no way connected to the memory & OS upgrade (which seems correct as OS 10.2 is still working and we can use the DSL connection). I am really wondering if it is worth it to repair this iMac, considering its age and speed. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

    Sure :
    Download the widget from :
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/webcams/mirror.html
Install it. When you hear the whine, hit the F12 key, if the mirror widget does not appear click on + to find it and launch. This will immediatly stop the CPU whistle, and switch on the green web cam light.
Then close the mirror widget (x on the left top of the windows) and rehit the F12.
You should be done with the whine unless you restart your machine

  • Possibly mundane Mini-DVI to VGA into an external monitor problem

    Hi,
I've had a look over the interwebs regarding my problem and it seems as if it's not unusual to have external monitor problems but I'm not sure if mine is slightly different:
I had a perfectly working set up with my new Macbook (the white one, '06 model I believe), that was connected to my Hanns-G HU196D monitor via a mini-DVI to VGA adapter, no problems whatsoever. But for a couple of weeks now my Macbook just flickers a light blue colour, with nothing at all on the monitor, and my macbook is unusable until I remove the adapter. I've read about updating firmware but I can't see my desktop once the macbook is connected to the monitor so it's not possible to configure anything. I've read somewhere that my external monitor isn't compatible with this set up, but it was until a couple of weeks ago!
My Macbook's 4 months old now and since then I've bought a new mini-dvi to vga adapter and a new VGA cable, no connections seem loose on either mini-dvi port or my monitor's vga port.
    Thanks if you can help!
    Jack

You will need to use a mini Dvi-dvi and a dvi-svideo/rca adapter.
    Joy joy hallelujah.
Pardon the sarcasm...I just wasted 3 hours of my life trying to sort the issue out.
Heard a KWORLD PlusTV PCTOTV Converter SA235 USB 2.0 Interface would sort the issue out for under 40$ but it's not Mac.
    Hope that helps.

  • Using a 27" iMac as Monitor for PC

I am building a PC for Network Attached Storage (NAS) using FreeNAS:
    http://www.freenas.org/
Once it's all set up I'll just use the web/network interface to manage it.  But, as I assemble the PC I'll probably need a monitor to make changes to the BIOS settings.
I'm wondering whether I can use my iMac (iMac11,3) as a makeshift monitor for the PC.  Apparently it's possible to do this if the PC has a Mini DisplayPort.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924
My PC has the followoing video ports:
    - VGA
    - DVI
    - HDMI
Can anyone tell me whether I can use my iMac as monitor to a PC with one of these ports?
If so, can anyone recommend a cable to do so?  For example, this Mini DisplayPort <-> HDMI cable says it won't work for my purposes:
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802 &p_id=5311&seq=1&format=2
"This device is not Bidirectional. It can only connect a Mini-DisplayPort source to an HDMI® display. It will not work in reverse."
I want to display my PC's VGA, HDMI, or DVI as the source to my iMac's Mini-DisplayPort, not the other way around.
    Thank you for your help.
      - nello

But that one doesn't support the 27" screen, you need Dual-Link DVI if it's going to work at all...
Note:  This product supports single-link DVI. Dual-link DVI and the Apple 27" Cinema Display are supported by the GTV-DVIDL-2-MDP.
    Which is even more money...

  • What's happened to the Share Monitor or at least a progress bar in 10.0.6?

Previously when exporting using the Share menu, I either had a progress bar or the Share Monitor to show how my export was doing.
Now in 10.0.6 there appears to be neither of these items so I have no idea how long it will take.
Am I doing something wrong or have both these items disappeared?
If the latter, how do I estimate the time the export will take?

All exports in FCP X as of 10.0.6 are background processes, and GPU enbled so they are much, much faster.
Click the Background Process indicator in the Dashboard to see the progress there.  Just like when you import files.   The great news is, now you can contiue working while exporting is going on in the background.

I have an iMac4.1 and my iPhoto is very slow and the thumbnails correspond to the wrong pictures.  How do I fix this? Or is my iMac too old?  Will getting a new iMac solve this problem?
I realize is only 512MB of memory but I want to make sure that a new iMac will solve this problem.  Can the new iPhoto handle 10GB or more of photos?  Or do I have to go to Picasa anyways in which case I can buy any computer to do that?

The model of Mac is not partcularly relevant, it's the version of the OS and iPhoto that matter.
iPhoto - since 2006 - is good for 250,000 images.

  • My computer is not showing up in share monitor

    Hi
I was happily creating and sharing files to Vimeo from Final Cut Pro x - When I had a kernal panic - Hard reset and now "My Computer" does not show up in share monitor - It says no clusters found - When I goto share a file to vimeo now nothing happens ..
Any clues - I am going mad....

There is nothing to fix, it is not supposed to show up there. It will only show there as a 'camera' if there are photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc which you might want to then copy to your comptuer.
What do you want to do with the iPad via My Computer ?
