IMac showing 'no drives' on menubar eject button....what to do??....

My iMac suddenly started spitting out discs of any kind and after looking at the
menubar Superdrive eject item it shows 'no drives'.
This is confirmed in System Profiler and Disk Utility...it's just not there.
Before I lug this thing down to the local Apple Store and just get a new one
installed is there anything that I can do to confirm it's a drive issue and not
something gone haywire with the currently installed copy of Snow Leopard? (10.6.6).
I'm thinking maybe installing a new copy of the OS from an external drive... if
the Superdrive doesn't show then that WOULD confirm it's dead...yes?
Any other ideas gratefully received.

Choose Restart from the Apple menu. Or, just press the power button and choose Restart.

  • My iMac's DVD drive launches discs across the room when I eject them.

    Hi.
I was wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem, and also, if anyone might have a solution for it.
As of recently, [I don't know the exact date that the problem began, but it's been awhile], whenever I eject a DVD from my iMac's DVD drive [by either ejecting it in Finder, or by pressing the keyboard's Eject button], instead of just coming out halfway like it used to, the drive now launches the DVD across the room.
I'm starting to get annoyed by this problem, especially when I burn something and am not around to catch the disc when it comes flying out, and later find it lying on the floor in the corner of my room.
So does anybody know if there is anything that I can do about this?.
I did that online-chat thing on Apple's website, and the guy told me that I have to bring it in to a service centre, and then disconnected.
I'd like to avoid doing that if possible.
Also, I don't even know of any [or if there even ARE any] that are in Montreal, Quebec, [which is where I live].
Oh, and I bought an AppleCare Protection Plan with the iMac when I bought it last January [2005].
Soooo... Does that do anything for me?.
    Thanks so much!.

    20" 1.8gHz iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   The DVD drive is a Matshita UJ-825 DVD-R drive.

    Hi Steven,
I had the same thing happening with mine. When I was on with Apple Care, they asked me if I would be willing to send them my computer in exchange for a new one (refurbished). It turned out they new about the problem & are trying to figure it out with computers that are actually experiencing the issue. This was just a couple of weeks ago, so you might call & check about it. They cover all shipping costs.
    Good luck

  • Why my menu bar shows Superdrive eject button?

For some reason iMac shows Superdrive eject button on menu bar and when I click on it then Superdrive isn't active. I have no CDs/DVDs in the computer.
Tried on Disk Utility, clicked on SuperDrive but eject button wasn' t active.
Why is it there and what does it do there?

If the machine detects that it does not have an apple keyboard (and not the magic key to the right of the f12 that isn't f13, and for users who didn't know that f12 can act as a keyboard eject in the absence of magic f12.5) it will launch that menu item. Once its launched, you have to remove it as described by others here. It will also show up if you have TWO optical drives attached, so you can control which one to eject.

  • Add a CD Drive, now Eject button doesn't work

I am very new to Mac so if this is easy to fix sorry.
My G4 only had one CD ROM drive so I added a second to the bay. However once starting up the system the eject button did not work. I took out the added drive and set things back to how it was. Now the button still does not work. How can I get the button to work. I can't even get a CD in the drive with out it.
    thanks

    Hi, Darin35 -
What model G4 is it? If you're not sure of the Apple designation for your model, one of these Apple KBase articles should help you identify it -
Article #58418 - Power Mac G4: How to Differentiate Between Models
Article #42739 - Power Mac G4: How to Differentiate Between Models (part 2)
One of the reasons I ask that is that all G4s which have an external button on the optical drive door were designed for only one optical drive, with the second (lower) bay designed for a Zip drive. If yours is one of these, how did you get the second optical drive into the lower bay?
In general, the external button on G4 optical drive doors works indirectly - it is a plastic part, designed so that pushing on the button causes an arm/lever to press the actual eject button on the face of the optical drive itself. It is possible that arm got misaligned (or even broken) during reassembly of the case parts. You can examine it and test it fairly easily by carefully prying open the external door - be gentle; you are pulling against a mild spring.

  • IMac external hard drive will not show up on desktop

I have an external 60 GB hard drive that is attached to an IMac.
I used to be to access this hard drive, but now the IMac will not see it and it does not appear on the desktop anymore. I have another Mac computer and have hooked this hard drive up to it, and it shows up just fine on this other computer's desktop, so I know the hard drive should be working.
What should I try doing to get this hard drive show up on the IMac?

  • [SOLVED] Disable optical drive eject button

My little 2-years-old brother loves to play with eject button on my optical drive. I want to find the most simple way to disable it temporary and I want it to be software, i.e. physically blocking the button isn't good. Any software tool for that?
    Thank you for attention, Artyom.

Debian has setcd which does what you are looking for. Here is the description:
This program allows you to control the behaviour of your Linux cdrom player.
You can control: auto close, auto eject, medium type checking and tray/caddy locking. You can get information on the volume name of CD-ROMs and other data, and you can set the speed of your drive and choose a disc from a jukebox.
The source of this package may be an example for cdrom player program developers that wish to exploit the features of the linux cdrom interface.
Unfortunately, there is no Arch package of it. If no one else beats me to it, I can package it later today

  • Unmount DVD when pressing eject button on drive?

I'm running XFCE 4.8 and wondering if there's a way to have the system unmount a DVD and eject it when I press the physical button on the drive.  I seem to remember this working in 4.6 when Thunar's volume manager was running.  It is particularly annoying when I pop in a video DVD, play it in Totem (which mounts it), and then have to open a Thunar window to eject it.

light0 wrote:Someone wrote a kludge script to fix it
I am not sure the script solves the issue; the command 'eject /dev/sr0', in the script called by the udev rule, doesn't work for me if the device was busy before the eject button was pushed. Because the umount command called by eject will not operates in this case and the mount point stays there.
I think this is a bug in the default udev rule '/usr/lib/udev/rules.d/60-cdrom_id.rules' which ejects the CD/DVD when the button is pressed even when a file system on it is mounted and even if it is busy! This rule should be changed (or the cdrom_id binary) to not act in these cases.
Presently I think the only way to work around this, is to comment out the line:
    ENV{DISK_EJECT_REQUEST}=="?*", RUN+="cdrom_id --eject-media $devnode", GOTO="cdrom_end"
    To do that:
    # cp /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/60-cdrom_id.rules /etc/udev/rules.d
    # cd /etc/udev/rules.d
    # vim 60-cdrom_id.rules
    # diff 60-cdrom_id.rules /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/60-cdrom_id.rules
    12c12
    < #ENV{DISK_EJECT_REQUEST}=="?*", RUN+="cdrom_id --eject-media $devnode", GOTO="cdrom_end"
    > ENV{DISK_EJECT_REQUEST}=="?*", RUN+="cdrom_id --eject-media $devnode", GOTO="cdrom_end"
    # udevadm control --reload
The rule in /etc/udev will take precedence over the one in /usr/lib/udev and will not be overwritten by an systemd update.
Edit: In fact this is not the solution either; see next post.

  • Eject Button Inactivated Disc Won't Eject

I just bought my macbook pro new and suddenly (since I updated to 10.6.6, coincidence?) my eject button will not work, nor does it made any effort to eject the disc that I put inside. I've tried pushing eject (no symbol or noise), I've tried using terminal to eject, I've tried restarting it at pushing commandoption+of, I've tried using a credit card. Problem is two fold... my disc is stuck in there (and I'm scared to use a paperclip) and the eject button does not work. The computer also does not show a disc is inserted so I can eject it using the computer programs or utilities.
    Suggestions?

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
I would consider repairing your hard drive and permissions. If this doesn't help then you will need to reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Windows 8.1 64bit ,eject button not working

I have an imac and have installed windows 8.1 64 bit and everything works well except my eject button on my apple keyboard. so now I cant intall any programs from disk. also my apple super drive isn't showing up omn 'my computer ' in windows
im pretty sure I installed the needed newest drivers...so what am I missing?

On your Bootcamp drivers there should be a driver named AppleODDInstaller64.exe which is the Optical Disk Drive installer. You can copy this to the a USB and install it on the Windows side for it to recognize the Optical disk and the eject button should work. You are also going to need AppleKeyboardInstaller64.exe  for the keyboard to be recognized.
There is also a mechanism to eject the disk using OSX terminal and using diskutil eject on the OSX side. See man diskutil for the OSX side.
    eject device
Eject a disk.  Media will become offline for the purposes of being a data store for file systems or being a member of constructs such
as software RAID or direct data.  Additionally, removable media will become eligible for safe manual removal; automatically-removable
media will begin its physical (motorized) eject sequence.

Can't burn data to a CD because iMac doesn't recognize that a CD has been inserted.  Also, it won't let me eject the disk. How do I get my iMac to let me burn the data to the CD and eject the disk?
Finder currently has 2 "Untitled CD"s listed in it.  One has been in there for months (without a CD inserted into the machine).  I have tried several times unsuccessfully to remove the item from finder.

Please reset the SMC and PRAM 2-3 times each using the instructions in https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603.  Then attempt to eject. If that fails please use one of Kappy's ideas:
