IMac shown as UNKNOWN under "Attached Devices" on Netgear Router
I have a small home network comprising my iMac G5 (10.4.7), and two XP laptops. One of the laptops is connected to a Netgear DG834PN Wireless Router via Ethernet Cable, and the other laptop and my iMac gets connection via wireless.
Yesterday I suddenly realised that my iMac is listed on the router's attached devices as UNKNOWN. Before, it showed my computers name (which I have NOT changed recently). MAC address is right though.
This does NOT affect my internet access - everything still going smoothly there. VNC also works, and even file sharing using my IP address. BUT my computer is no longer shown in the workgroup on the two Windows computers.
The two Windows computers "see" each other in the workgroup computer list. Mine is just not there.
I have rebooted the router, upgraded the firmware, restarted my iMac, changed my iMac's name, repaired permissions, but still my computer is shown as UNKNOWN.
Anyone out there having a CLUE why this could be?? As far as I can tell, it must be a problem with my Mac, since it is the only part of the equation that is not working!
Only one thing comes to mind.
Go to your "Sharing" option in the System Preferences. Click the "Firewall" tab and hit the "Advanced" button. In the window shade screen that unrolls, make sure the "Enable Stealth Mode" box is not checked. I have had this option prevent my lan router from properly registering my computer in the past.

Something strange in my router's list of attached devices.
This might be a tough one.
Here is my setup: Imac g5, cable modem and netgear rangemax wireless router, ethernet connection, WEP encrytion with SSID broadcast disabled. Currently not taking advantage of the wireless yet.
Here is the strange thing: Most times (I am paranoid and check all the time to see if anyone is trying to creep into my network), when I check my list of "attached devices" in my router login page I see this:
Attached Devices
IP Address: 1. 192.168.1.3
Device Name: -
MAC Address: (don't know if I should show that)
Notice that there is no "device name."
And sometimes I see this:
Attached Devices
IP Address: 1. 192.168.1.3
Device Name: YOUR-XB2X7J77GN
MAC Address: ***************
Obviously, the weird thing here is the "device name."
Now, I googled my device name: YOUR-XB2X7J77GN and got a few hits that contained words like "hack" and such and some hits that didn't really saying anything suspicious. Didn't find anything that seemed to do with wireless networking though. Seems like someone else somewhere in the world would have noticed this and posted in some forum about it but nothing that I found, which I think seems a little odd. Google this name and see what you think.
Question: Why does my device name change sometimes and should it be changing. Is this worth looking into and do most user's just not care to even look at this stuff?Don't know, but I've read in Apple articles and elsewhere that WPA is more secure than WEP, and that was prior to WPA2. You might want to consider switching over.

I want to import photos from iphoto to my ipad. The help button said to press the photo button under the device list. There isn't a photo button shown. Could it be hidden?
If you connect and select your iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, on the right-hand side of iTunes (not on the left) there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders or albums/events to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.

I have a WRT 330N . Trying to see a list of attached devices (client list) from the status tab does not show all attached devices.
The list is 9 lines ( 9 devices) long. I know I have more than that attached.
Is there a way to go around this problem?The devices it is showing are all working with DHCP IP settings ....
not static .. so all the devices using static IP settings ... will not be shown under DHCP client table .... -
Somehow a new contact became associated with my email. Now all my email has her name on it. This happens only on my iMac, not on my other Apple devices. I have removed my email from her contact card and deleted her from previous recipients on Mail.
Check the settings in the Accounts for Mail.
Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Click on your email Account in the left column > What appears under Full Name in the right column?
If that is the incorrect name you're describing change it to your correct name. -
Max shows unknown under Actual IP address
Using MAX Devices and Interfaces, Network Devices, I have a device connected, I can ping it manually from Start run window. Under Network Devices Hostname or IP Address shows the proper IP address of the test equipment. But under Actual IP address it says unknown.
Test equipment is an Aeroflex 3920 and LabVIEW 2009.Is her machine set up the same as far as network addresses, etc. She on the same sub-net, etc.? As far as the post about MAX being for NI instruments, that is generally true, as far as plug in DAQ, etc., but when you are trying to set upVISA TCP/IP resources and similar you definitely can configure them in MAX. Can you post a screen shot of the MAX screens (".png" format please!), ideally of both working and non-working instances.

But, What if I don't see the Remote Disc under the DEVICES??That is all checked on both computers. I just don't know why I can't figure this out!

When I bootup the icon for Elements shows up in orange. It changes to green only when I've gone to Finder and clicked on Elelments under the Devices list. This is a recent development. The icon used to be green upon bootup. Does anyone know why ?

I'm not affiliated w/ the developer, just a happy user that gave up fighting the apple podcast app a while ago. I used to have a bunch of smart playlists in itunes for my podcasts, and come home every day and pathologically synced my phone as soon as I walked in the door, and again before I walked out the door in the morning.
Since my wife was doing this too, we were fighting over who's turn it was to sync their phone.
Since I've switched to Downcast, I no longer worry about syncing my phone to itunes at all. I can go weeks between syncs.
Setup a "playlist" in downcast (ex., "Commute") and add podcasts to that playlist. Add another playlist ("walk" or "workout") and add different podcasts to that one.
Set podcast priorities on a per-feed basis (ex., high priority for some daily news feeds, medium priority for some favorite podcasts, lower priority for other stuff). Downcast will play the things in the priority you specify, and within that priority, it will play in date order (oldest to newest).
Allegedly, it will also sync your play status to other devices, although that is not a feature I currently use and can't vouch for. It uses apple's iCloud APIs, so to some extent may be limited by what Apple's APIs can do. -
my classic iPod no longer appears in iTunes window when connected to iMac. does this mean my device is no longer supported by iTunes? or incompatible with OSX?

Why are my iphone4S and ipad3 no longer being seen in finder under the devices section
I am new to the Apple ecosystem and for the most part I have fallen in love with it, I have had my fill of the PC era and was on the verge of a mental breakdown using them. Well I bought a MBP 13" an ipad3 and I have an iPhone 4s. When I first got these items I was able to drag and drop files like a movie that I own and copied to the hard drive. This was done in finder, under the devices section it would show my phone and my ipad however after I installed the latest iTunes software it seems that this has disapeared and now I cannot find my devices in the finder area to drag and drop these files anymore. So, my question is this, has Apple done away with this function and if so how can I drag and drop a file to the ipad3 now? Thank you all for your help.

'Podcasts' under Ipod device disappeared in Itunes library. I can't manage my podcasts on ipod via I tunes library. I can access the podcasts on my ipod (5th generation), itself. I can access and manage music. I can add more podcasts to ipod. The podcast icon reappears with only the newly added podcasts. When I disconnect ipod and reconnect ipod, 'podcasts' no longer appears under the device. So I am unable to manage my podcasts on I tunes library which means I can't delete podcasts from I tunes library. I can only add podcasts. I have disconnected and reconnected ipod. I have checked for updates. I have restored the ipod to it's original settings. My next step will be to install and reinstall I tunes. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
To be clear, the podcast icon disappeared under Ipod device in Itunes. I can access and manage the podcasts in the itunes library. I can't manage podcasts on my ipod via itunes (which means I can't delete podcasts from my ipod). I can access podcasts on my ipod, itself.

Ok, so the songs were renamed for some reason after my update to iOS5 (possibly human error) to things like $ROV22LD (***?!) I have deleted them off the phone first, then tried to delete them off iTunes under 'my device' i just want them gone! Now to further complicate the issue, I have deleted some of the songs and re-infoed others that i really wanted to keep. This worked fine in the 'music' file in iTunes but no change to 'my device'.... sorry lol.

What do I do if "photos" is not showing up under "My Device" when I plug my phone in and the iTunes windo opens? I had my phone reset yesterday b/c of picture texting/software problems. It wiped it clean! I had to start again like it was a NEW phone and use my backup info on my computer to sync my information. I have restored my contacts, calendars, music, etc...but, I can't get my pictures back. HELP!
