IMac shut down suddenly and won't boot back up

This morning my iMac shut down suddenly. All I had open was Google Chrome and I was just on Facebook and that's it. When I tried to boot it back up, it wouldn't load past the startup sound, wherein it would appear to shut back down,or at the very least the screen would go black (my mouse has lights that stay on when the computer is on, and the light kept going on and off while the screen remained black). This was the case for at least a half hour until it suddenly booted itself back up all on its own. I had it on throughout the day, just browsing the internet and watching Youtube. It shut itself down twice during the day, and both times it restarted on its own right away after showing me a grey screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar. Now it just shut itself down again and it won't make it past the progress bar screen - if it even makes it that far, sometimes it shuts off right after it makes the startup sound. It keeps trying to boot up on its own over and over again, but it keeps shutting down right away. All the fixes I've searched for so far require a computer that actually boots up all the way so I don't think I could run any reports if I tried!
I'm running the latest version of Yosemite (10.10.2?).

Not entirely sure what specs are useful to know so I'm just gonna write some of what's on the box it came in:
3.2 GHz Intel i3 processor, 4MBshared level 3 cache
4GB of 1333MHz DDR SDRAM
1TB serial ATA hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics processor with 512 MB of GDDR3 memory
Bought it around fall of 2010. Not sure if it's worth trying to get it fixed (I live nowhere near an Apple store) or if I should just get a new computer, but I would like to know what's wrong, if possible.

Try to boot into the Recover Partition by holding down the Command + R keys on startup. If it still won't boot then the HD has probably crashed. The is likely a AASP in your area, you can locate one by clicking AASP Locator, take it to one to be professional diagnosed. If it's only the HD, assuming you have been backing up, restoring to a new HD is pretty simple.

Try booting to the Recovery drive, running Disk Utility and Repair disk and Repair Permissions.
1. Reboot and immediately hold down command and R (two keys).
2. When you see the screen shown on this page, select Disk Utility and continue.
3. When DU is running, select the hard drove on the left, First Aid and Repair Disk.
4. After Repair Disk, click Repair Permissions.
Quit DU and restart.

If your iMac shut down unexpectedly, and the fan is running unusually fast or loud, you may need to reset the System Management Controller.
I recommend following this troubleshooting method:
Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If the iMac unexpectedly shuts down again, or the fan continues running unusually fast or loud, follow these steps:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

IMac shuts down on 1/3 of boot sequence

My 20 inch 2007 iMac suddenly started shutting down on 1/3 of boot sequence. This happened after the mac just shut down while i was working on it, since this happened the mac will not boot. The Apple logo appears, the loading bar appears, it gets to 1/3 off the bar, then it disappears, and the mac shuts down. I already used the disk utility to check the disk, there seems to be no problem. Also, i already re-installed MacOS, this did not have any effect as well.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Processor: Intel core 2 duo, 2.4 ghz
4GB of Ram.

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list. Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

I have bought this laptop 10 days ago, I am facing two problems 1st is, it shuts down(suddenly off not proper shut down) while working without showing any error message, and the problem no 2 is its key board stops working at times, system is working fine but all the buttons of key board are not responding. it will work when I restart the system.

Sorry to hear of your problems. I would suggest that you try a reset of the BIOS just to rule out any hardware conflicts the system may have. Try this........
1. Unplug the charger / adapter.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds.
4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.
If the problems weren't resolved by doing the reset then I suggest you contact Lenovo Support for warranty service. Both the problems you mentioned could be related to faulty hardware and the service center would be best equipped to check out your new laptop. S 4 Shuts down randomly and won't restart

Hello,
I brought and S 4 7/27 and loved it for the first few days. A few days later it started shutting down randomly and the only way to restart is to take the battery out. That works for an hour or so until it shuts down again. I've tried uninstalling all the apps I've installed but I still get the same result.
Any sugestions?

twinsfan2013, the software for some 3rd party applications can affect the performance of your device. Although you've uninstalled a few application, the issue may still remain on your phone. I recommend that you back up your device at Verizon's cloud or Backup Assistance and then hard reset your phone if the power cycling issue persists. My MacBook Pro(Mid 2014) won't turn back on. I was just typing up my essay and it just turned straight off and won't turn back on. It has happen several times before and all I had to do was press the buttons(SMC method) and the PVRAM thing and it would turn back on. But now it doesn't turn on at all. How do I fix this issue? I had went today to the Apple Store and had a appointment at 3:15-3:25 and I was late by 2 minutes, so they couldn't help me and offered me to come back at 5PM, but will busy so I asked for 5 Monday. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Back when it was operating it would shut off whenever I was using it at the random times. This is my first MacBook so I don't know if it's suppose to get Hot and loud sometimes when operating and then cool off afterwards if that helps out. It shutoff last week wednesday and doesn't turn on at all, but will charge to fully green though. Anyone got any suggestions? I do have a MacBook screwdriver to open it, so if anyone knows anything about the inside and how to resolve the issue it would be great. I don't know how to remove the battery so if you do know please tell me or some keyboard trick would be helpful! All my data is on this so I would like to solve before Apple erases my data.

G4 shut down suddenly and now won't power up

I was in the process of doing a Microsoft update and my computer just shut down. I attempted to restart and it will not even power up. I did all of the normal stuff, unplugged cord for a bit and reconnected, opened up the box and reset the PMU by pressing the button...no luck. The difference with my situation from the others with similar problems is my computer shut down on its own.

Hello everyone, after checking in Apple community questions, I didn't find similar problem.
I have a Macbook Pro early 2011 with Os X Yosemite, yesterday while I was working on it, it suddenly shut down without any warning. After trying to turn it on again, it allowed me to type my password and I noticed that the screen is not clear and little bit blue. After typing the password, it showed me that it's loading.after that the screen just become grey/[a bit blue] and it doesn't go further than that..
I tried to RESET the SMC and also starting in a safe mode... But my problem remains the same.
PS: I couldn't start with disk utility software, when I tried, it just blocked.
What can I do?

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
        Part 1 of 8 done at … sec

        The test results are on the Clipboard.
        Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

IMac shutting down over and over

Hey guys, I've got a mid 2007 Core2Duo 2.0GHZ Aluminum iMac. Until yesterday it was running as well as the day I bought it about 3.5 years ago.
Last night though I found it shut down and I thought maybe there had been a power outage or something but my wife said she'd been using it only an hour earlier. I tried to power it up with the button on the back but it wouldn't come on. I had to remove the power cord and then try it again. It worked for a few minutes and then shut down again. This happened about 10 times in a row over the next 2 hours. It would only come on after removing the cord and plugging back in. At one point I had it on for a few minutes and got the hardware test dvd inserted but when I tried to reboot from the dvd it crashed again and wouldn't start again. I left it alone and went to bed and then tried it again this morning. I got it on for a few minutes and did a quick iPad/iPhone sync as well as a backup. I then managed to reboot it from the hardware test dvd and ran the short test. It took about 3 minutes and said no problems. I then tried the longer test and came back after 20 minutes to find it crashed. I did one last startup just so I could do one last proper shut down. I've gone to work now and I'll be trying it again tonight when I get home though.
After doing some reading for similar problems it looks like its probably the power supply. I've always sold my machines every 3 years and never had any problems that needed repair before. So, I'm wondering what I should expect for repair costs for something like this or maybe someone has another idea for a fix?

If not of the above works and you have AC, call them. Let them deal w/it. Otherwise, take your iMac down to your local AS or an AASP. Diagnostic testing is FREE!

IMac shut down unexpectedly and automatically cleared cache + reset safari

for weeks now i've been dealing with the terrible problem my g5 shutting off for no apparent reason. it's happened anywhere from 2-50 times per day. on nearly ever occasion when the computer restarted it made the loud 'vroom' noise it typically does, but the last time it shut down there was no 'vroom' and when i went to safari my entire history had been reset. is there anyway to retrieve this (yes, i know it's probably the least of my problems, but there are a few things for a few weeks ago that i'd very much like to get back to TODAY).
