IMac shuts down after burning DVDs.

Brand new aluminum iMac 20" with Tiger 10.4.11 installed. We've found that after burning a DVD(-R) the iMac just shuts off - bizarre.
Any ideas why this is happening? Fix?

That's interesting, so it's not a heat problem then. So do just a few of us have defective iMac burners, or does everyone? Friends of mine who use Mac laptops for processing similar files to me, have not had this problem of mid-burn shutdown, nor has a friend in UK on a pre-Intel iMac and 10.4.9. I tried several different brands of CDs and DVDs including TDK, Verbatim Data-life Plus (usually very reliable), and DataStream. All failed equally. So far the external LaCie burner is working well and is a work around for the problem. Why was it that only the aif files failed for me? You would think if there was a Mac problem then we would all have the same thing happening?

  • IMac shuts down when burning DVD

I'm trying to burn a dl DVD for the first time. I have ~3700 items taking up 6.5GB to send to a friend.
Twice when I have tried to do this my iMac has just shutdown, like pulling the plug. It seemed to happen just a little after it displayed "writing first track." Twice it gave me a message that the drive wouldn't do this (yes, I forgot to write it down, it was late).
    Any suggestions

    Gday Aaron,
Sounds like your machine might be overheating for some reason? Maybe try quitting all applications but the burning application and set the burn speed lower to get the job done? If your mac shuts down with no warning it may mean its protecting itself from overheating. If it continues you may want to have an Apple Service Centre look at it. Hope this helps.

  • IMac shut downs after Apple logo appears!

Since I installed Maverick my iMac been acting weird. Now when I turn it on it shuts down after the Apple logo appears!
I've looked for similar problems but I've other issue here, I've a login security username\password. So, I can't pick the hard driver and repair it simpley!
    Any help...

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • IMac shuts down after removing Mini DisplayPort to SVGA

    Hi,
The last couple of years I have worked with a 27 inch iMac in combination with a HP 27 inch monitor. This monitor is connected via a Mini Displayport to SVGA connector. Because I am going to use this external monitor anymore, I disconnected it today which made my iMac shut down imediately. Then it keeps rebooting and trying to start up but shuts down again. Over and over.
The problem stops as soon as I connect the monitor again.
    Anybody have any thoughts?

  • Imac shuts down after update

My iMac has begun shutting down (twice in the past day and a half) after downloading the newest update, (I didn't get OS Lion) just the new updates. I have i5 intel mac and it is less than a year old. I am just curious if anyone else is having similar issues. Also it is important to include that when I turned my cpu back on I had to unplug it from the wall first, the power button was unresponsive.

I have 2 of the same iMacs in addition to 2 macbook pros with quad cores that are very new.  The latest update rearranged my bookmarks on one machine to a previous set and, more importantly, disabled a program I use to disable keylogging.  On another machine, some website settings were dropped in addition to the keylogging program.  The macbook pros, which are brand spanking new, also had some minor glitches.  I know these guys have a lot on their plate right now since they have obviously released Lion before they fully debugged, but those of us who had sense to wait a few months for them to get things straight should not be punished by the release of a buggy update of the migration tools.  Apple is such a strong company and culture that I would have expected them not to rush to unleash this Windows-like buggy set of updates and releases.
    MAKE IT RIGHT, APPLE.

  • IMac shuts down after putting it to sleep

Lately, my iMac G5 has been shutting down automatically after putting it to sleep. If I wake it up within a short period of time it is OK, but if I wait several minutes, it must be restarted.
Did I accidentily change a setting? Or is it a problem with the hardware?
Is there a setting I can check? I have tried to find one in Energy Saver and other places without success.
    Thanks,
    -tee

Welcome to Discussions - Please tell us which model G5 iMac you have (iMac release dates).I don't think you changed anything, I would suggest that you reset the SMU and see if that helps.

  • IMac Shuts Down after 5 Minutes, No Matter What

    Hi Guys,
I have a serious problem. Last night, after about a week of not using my computer, I turned it on, jumped in the shower, came out, and it was off (not sleeping, just completely off). So turned it on again, it loaded up, I opened up Safari, then boom, it shuts off again. I thought it might have something to do with temperature, but I have had temperature issues and I got a new thermal sensor a few months ago (and plus, when it overheated, it went to sleep, not shut down). I tried 2 more times, same results, after about 5 minutes, it would just shut down. I haven't backed anything up on my computer, I was wondering if someone knew what my problem was or any solutions to at least save my data (I was planning on buying a Time Capsule, but now I might have to put that $ toward a new computer).
I have a Rev B iMac G5, purchased around May of 2005. I am on Tiger. Thank you in advance.

"Is there a reason that this happened? What could have been causing it?"
Well, now you know you have a USB/peripheral conflict. You can plug each one back in one at a time until the problem re-occurs. This way you will know which one of your devices is the culprit.
Make sure all your peripherals/devices are up to date in their versions, drivers, etc.

  • Serious Error Shut Down when Burning DVD

When attempting to burn DVD, Premiere Elements 3.0 immediately says there has been a serious error and program must shut down. Video was captured from camcorder, is about 12 minutes, just a couple of scene buttons on scene menu. Using an HP 2.4 ghz quad-core PC with 3 GB ram. I'm using DVD burner in other programs with no problem.

Success---I followed some troubleshooting links and the one that worked was as follows:
    4. Re-create the Premiere Elements PluginCache.
The PluginCache is a Windows registry entry that contains information regarding the status of all native and third-party plug-ins used with Premiere Elements. To re-create the file, hold down the Shift key while choosing Start > Programs > Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0. Release the key when the Select Initial Workspace window appears.
Thanks for all the help...hard to believe the fix is as simple as holding down the shift key as the progam starts!!

  • IMac shuts down after turning off extrenal HD

Since upgrading to 10.10.2 my 27 Inch iMac 2013 (Fusion Drive) shuts down unexpectedly when I turn off one of my external 4T G-Drive Hard Drive.
    iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)
    3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
I can eject the G-Drive no problem. But if I eject and then turn it off, it also turns my iMac off.
    I didn't have a problem before upgrading.
I can eject and turn off my Lacie Drive that is used for Time Machine backups and there no problem.
The problem only occurs with the G-Drive.
I use the G-Drive for extra storage, for my iTunes library and such.
The systems log in console shows the following 'shutdown cause'
    > Mar 21 11:17:31 localhost kernel[0]: Previous shutdown cause: -62

    Thanks Mark
I just tested and that seems to solve the problem.
Yes also correct about the Lacie Drive.

  • HT3964 Imac shuts down after start up

New hard drive in Imac when I power it on goes throught the process and then it shuts down, I have new memory as well.

Your capacitors are leaking, this is a known issue with Rev A G5 iMacs, and they should be replaced, along with the logic board. Take it in and if t stays up long enough, try to clone it to an external drive to save your data. I use SuperDuper! to do this.
Let us know how you make out,

  • Imac Shuts Down after 1 min

    Hi
My intel mac is about a year old now, it has been used daily and doesnt normally get turned of or put to sleep it just looks after itself. Recently it has begun to turn off, not go through the shut down process but just turn off. To restart the power must be turned off at the plug and then back on, the start button pressed I may then get 30 seconds to a minute after start up before it urns off again.
Does anyone have any ideas? Know of any safe star modes or such. Any and all help appreciated.
    Regards
    Ian

    Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the post. I wasn't expecting Apple to respond to these posts, but worth pointing out. I had tried a pram zap, but Solutions Inc. suggested resetting the SMC and that turned out to be the problem.

I accidently unplugged my iMac while it was on. Now it turns on shows the gray screen with Apple logo then an empty progress bar flashes below the logo a couple of times and then it shuts off.
I've tried resetting my PRAM, unplugging everything from the USB port and disk repair. Nothing seems to work. I would like to be able to recover my files because unfortunately I didn't get around to backing them up.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

You will need to start your computer with the original system disk that came with your computer and run Disk Utility, then click repair disk.  I see in your statement your said your ran Disk Repair if it is the same did is show any errors on your hard drive.  If it didn't find any errors then you may need to use something like DiskWarrior or Tech Tool Pro.  Also try to start your system in safe mode, hold down the shift key will restarting your Mac.
