IMac shuts down at the end of safe reboot?

My 27 IMac failed to get past start up grey screen.  I shut down, pulled all external
Devices and restarted in safe mode.  The start bar gets to 99% done in safe mode start up and
Then the Mac shuts down.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried booting into the Recovery HD and running Disk Utility to see if the HD needs any repairs?

  • My new iMac shuts down in the process of setting up Windows

Hi, i use an iMac and I also have Leopard installed. Recenetly i picked up a windows xp home edition cd, and decided to check out bootcamp. I followed the instructions, and when i am setting up windows in the blue screen menus, my iMac shuts down while formatting the selected drive. And when i turn it on, it brings me back to the first set up menu. It's very frustrating because i have to eject the CD holding down the mousebutton after a failed attempt at installing. Any ideas on how to successfuly set up the windows?

i'm having this exact problem.. whew i thought i'd have to send it in. it installs perfectly on my macbook pro. i eventually got to a point where it worked (after trying over 20 times) i hope i didn't damage my system. eventually parallels wouldn't sync with it so i ended up reformatting and am trying to get it working again.

  • My imac shuts down during the load up screen?

So I just got home and I realized the power was out. I bought this iMac literally like two months ago (I actually bought one two months ago but it wouldn't even turn on so they gave me a new one) It was working perfectly fine, and I was writing a report. I left the computer on and left the house only to return hours later with the power out, and when I turn it on it shows the start up screen with the Apple Logo, the little progress circle, and a progress bar that fills up to the end everytime but once it fills up to the end it stays there for a few minutes then the computer shuts off.
What should I do? I'm not tech expert please help, if it's possible I would really like to recover that report document, I need it by tomorrow!! Please help!!
Regarding Time Machine, no I don't know what it is or how to use it, so I don't think there would be any backup from it I could use.
    Thank you!!
I appologize I don't know how the categories work here!

The same happened to me a few weeks ago on my iMac (2008 24" 2.8 GHz model).  I attempted another boot cycle to go into safe mode while viewing the lines.  What you're not seeing when the progress bar is filling is your iMac attempting 3 tries to boot.  After the third try, if unsuccessful, it will power down.
There's a couple things you might want to try first:
    1)  Unplug everything from the iMac but your USB keyboard and mouse and try booting again;
    2)  Assuming you're running OS X and beyond, attempt booting into safe mode using these instructions:  OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? ; or otherwise, if running Mavericks:  OS X Mavericks: Start up in safe mode
In my case, I never got that far because it still wouldn't boot up.  I had to take in into the shop so they could diagnose the problem.  It turns out, in my case, the power supply was faulty and had caused issues with the hard drive.  I had an older backup, but at this point, Apple no longer has parts available for my 5 year old iMac (which is quite a crappy deal).  We examined my options and I decided that I'll be searching outward for another power supply and new hard drive and doing the replacement myself (even if I have to cannibalize another old iMac).  Bonus is I'm in the market for a Macbook Pro now.
l can't say this would be your issue, as there are others that can cause a boot failure; however, if no other info comes your way to help you out, it might likely require a visit to an Apple shop for diagnosis.

  • IMac shuts down in the middle of playing WoW

I'm not sure why but my iMac suddenly turns itself off in the middle of playing WoW. It doesn't happen immediately, but after playing it for a few hours.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I take it into the Apple store?
    Thanks!

A freezing issue is not really the same as shutting down, in my opinion, but the link is appreciated nonetheless.
I'm glad I saw this thread; I'm having the same problem. Presently, I'm running a "test" by leaving my computer on for ~48 hours straight without loading WoW. I'll see if it's still on in a couple hours when I return from work.
First, I will remove and reinsert the RAM. That's easy enough to do, and Apple gives instructions on how to do that.
My hunch is that something related to the video card / logic card might be heating up only when I use something that exercises the video card more than simple, standard applications. I don't feel anything getting hot, though (on the outside of the computer), but it's worth looking into. Perhaps I can manually change the fan speed for the CPU; maybe this thread would be helpful for you, also:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1516765
    Or this article:
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/10/16/modify-adjust-and-control-fan-speed-and -temperature-of-apple-macbook-macbook-pro-and-mac-mini/
If none of this works, I'm betting on a logic card issue, which would be bad news. But there still might be hope; it could be that some components are loose and need to be re-seated. Since I'm out of warranty, I won't have much of an issue opening up the iMac and looking for them myself, but be careful if you are within warranty, still. You may simply want to bring your computer in and ask for things to be replaced for free instead.

  • My imac shuts down during the startup process - possible startup file corrupt..??

    startup process begins normally...
grey screen - then the apple - then the spinning wheel -
sometimes shuts down during spinning wheel, sometimes it gets to the blue screen then shuts down

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again. If no go, Bboot with the SL install disc, launch Disk Utility, repair the disk, and restart normally. If that doesn't do the trick reinstall SL and then run Software Update if that does.

  • IMac shuts down after removing Mini DisplayPort to SVGA

    Hi,
The last couple of years I have worked with a 27 inch iMac in combination with a HP 27 inch monitor. This monitor is connected via a Mini Displayport to SVGA connector. Because I am going to use this external monitor anymore, I disconnected it today which made my iMac shut down imediately. Then it keeps rebooting and trying to start up but shuts down again. Over and over.
The problem stops as soon as I connect the monitor again.
    Anybody have any thoughts?

  • IMac shutting down on startup - Can't enter safe mode as wireless keyboard doesn't connect quickly enough

    Hi all,
I was planning to use bootcamp to install Windows 7 on my mid-2010 21.5" iMac.
Bootcamp recommended I usk disk utility to repair the drive. I had a snow leopard install disk in the drive, (I didn't realise Lion already had it's recovery tools built in to the hard drive.)
Disk utility said it can't repair the drive and recommended I start backing up my data (because the hard drive could be about to fail). Fine, so I restarted, with the intention of backing up everything (all my work for the last 12 months). So I press the power button, grey screen comes up, then the apple logo, then a progress bar appears (found this odd at first, but later found out it has something to do with disk utility and a bad hard drive) it gets to around 20% and then all power is cut from the iMac and the hard drive stops/everything powers down.
Now, I can't seem to get my iMac to boot into recovery utilities or into safe mode because it doesn't connect to the wireless keyboard in time before it shuts down. So, if I use a wired keyboard (I have a dell USB keyboard that I can take from the office), will I be able to boot into safe mode?
Also, if the disk in drive is causing the problem, then I can't remove it because the wireless keyboard won't connect/register any keypresses.

    Ok so, status report:
Wired keyboard is non responsive when I plug it in before/during boot. So i guess it needs to be plugged in before the iMac shut down. That's that out the window.
Plugged in headphones and I can't hear the startup chime so don't know when to start holding buttons.
To make matters worse, the wireless keyboard is no longer paired with the iMac, getting a green blinking light which indicates it wants to connect to a computer or device.
So I can't enter any commands whatsoever, can't remove the disk in the drive or boot safe mode. It's my worst nightmare.

  • Which 3rd party ram can I buy to max out my imac 2.93ghz i7 without the imac shutting down?

Which 3rd party ram can I buy to max out my imac 2.93ghz i7 without the imac shutting down? I know and apple knows that there is an issue with this but, I'm wondering if there is anyone here that has solved this issue. Apple wants waaaaay too much for 16 gigs of memory.

There was an issue with mid/late 2010 iMacs mostly, as evidenced in one of the threads:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2588800
However, I'm not aware of any current or remaining problems. I have a mid 2010 iMac and solved the problem by sticking with a total of 12 GB RAM (4 GB OEM original and 2 x 4 GB added from OWC). So, if you're not sure, contact OWC - they were actively working on the problem last year and if you buy 16 GB from them and they don't work, you can easily return it. Or, be super safe, and stick with a total of 12 GB - I'm finding that 12 is really quite enough even though I do a fair amount of photo, graphics, and video editing.

  • Imac shuts down, randomly, all the time

So my imac shuts down randomly all the time, after it turns itself off, u need to unplug it for ages, then it will restart (way longer than it should to reset smc). Even in target mode,
Even stranger is it logs a console message stating, system must shutdown now, shutting down....
I thought it must certainly be hardware issue but what? I have checked all temps, reset firmware, etc etc.....
The logic board has been replaced, so it can only be the psu?? any ideas?

    I've experiencing the same problem.
If there is a power failure (or the power line gets disconect) I have to unplug everything from the back of the computer and wait for hours till I can turn it back on.
Recently it started to turn itself off..... and then I have to wait for several hours till I can get it to work again..... any tips on how to solve this?

  • IMac shuts down when trying to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard

My iMac, purchased in November of '07, came installed with Tiger but also came with a Leopard OS update disk. When trying to upgrade to Leopard last week, every time I rebooted off the disk the computer would run for a minute in the gray screen and then suddenly shut off with no warning message. I checked HD in disk utilities, repaired my permissions and tried again with the same results. I've got 30 gigs of free space and 4 gigs of RAM which should be plenty. I talked to Apple support who walked me through the installation procedure with the same results and ended up shipping me a new install disk which came today. I am getting the same shut down on reboot with their replacement disk. Apple actually sent me two white disks. The first is labeled "For Mac Computers, Mac OSX Install disc 1" The second is labeled "MacBook, Mac OSX Install Disc 2" Since the second disc is label "MacBook" is it possible they sent me the wrong set of discs?
    Thanks

    rk87,
Thanks for replying. I have a 500 gig hard drive which yields a 465gig usable capacity, so, at 30 Gigs available, I don't have 10% of the drive free. This may be an issue, but my more immediate problem is that I can't get the install disk to boot up at all.
I called apple support again see what I could find out about the install disks which wouldn't work. The support guy seemed like he had a lot of knowledge about the system and suggested trying the Tiger install disk (that came with the machine) to see if it would boot up, which it did. After that success, I tried the Leopard update disk in another iMac I have at home and it worked as it should. Since the disk worked fine on the other mac, the guy at tech support speculated that there is some sort of hardware issue causing the install shut down on the computer in question.
His speculation was about the memory installed in the machine which might be the issue. I had bought the computer from an Apple Authorized store here in town who upgraded the RAM to 4GIGs using third-party memory. Even though the memory seems to have functioned properly for the past year, apple support says that there could be some sort of incompatibility with the third party product causing the install disk not to work.
Apple support told me about running a memory diagnostic off of the Tiger install disk by rebooting with the disk in the computer and hold down the "D" key. After I got off the phone I ran the test which turned out to take an hour in its long version. The test indicated no problems, but apple had told me that it might not be totally conclusive. At this point, I'm taking the computer back to the store where I bought it and will let them figure it out.
