IMac shuts down unexpectedly since Yosemite

So, I apologize in advance for the long story:
I have a late-2009 27" iMac i7 with 8gb Ram and a 1TB HD. I updated my OS to Yosemite soon after it came out. Now, I admit I don't use the computer that often, so it took a while to notice the issues but, we first realized there was a problem in early November when my husband could not download a game (presumably because of the wi-if connectivity issues supposedly fixed in the latest update). It was around a week after he finally was able to download tthe game, that he was playing it and the computer would just shut down out of nowhere. No warning, just shut down and restart with the "your computer shut down unexpectedly" screen. Now, because it happened so many times, I started to get worried about all of my photos and music that is stored on thIs computer, so I went to do a back-up on my time capsule. This was when I noticed my computer had at some point been renamed (not by any human) to "my Computer (3)" when prior to yosemite (as far as I can tell) it was named "my computer". Also at this point I could not for the life of me get the time capsule to back up the computer as it was looking for "my computer" and all that was available was "my computer (3)". This is when it had been working flawlessly for years. I ultimately had to wipe the TC completely, reformat it and start a back up from scratch. It was for the short period of time that the time capsule was not connected to the computer that we noticed it was no longer shutting down unexpectedly. however, one the TC was reconnected and doing a back up, anything extra that you would be doing (with the exception of web surfing) caused the computer to crash. So, simple fix, right? Turn off the auto back ups while and try to remember to turn them on every so often. fine , dandy, whatever. However, I have done the latest yosemite update and the wi-if still does not seem to be staying connected, disconnecting every few minutes. Now I'm seemingly having more issues with a game that is well within the limits for my computer and the game will not start. There are just so many things going wrong with the computer that I'm really concerned that everything is going to disappear off of it one day. Anybody have any clues as to my computer's issue??

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • My imac shuts down unexpectedly and now a fan is running??

    Hello,
I have been working on my iMac all morning and it shut down twice within a half hour and I had to press the start button on the back to get it going again. Now their is a loud fan running and I have no idea what is going on. Help much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Hi ebeugs,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iMac shut down unexpectedly, and the fan is running unusually fast or loud, you may need to reset the System Management Controller.
I recommend following this troubleshooting method:
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC.  Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If the iMac unexpectedly shuts down again, or the fan continues running unusually fast or loud, follow these steps:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find these steps and more information about resetting the SMC here:

  • My Mac has started to shut down unexpectedly since we installed google chrome. Any ideas?

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and also installed Google Chrome. Since then our Mac will shut down unexpectedly. Any ideas?

    Hi, lindafrommendota.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your Mac restarts unexpectedly after the install of Google Chrome.  Here is a troubleshooting article that will walk your through some steps for this issue.  However, since this issue started once you installed a specific program, I would uninstall this program and test the results.
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

    Hi bria90,
That is not good thing to have. Lets see if we can get it to boot up normally. Start with checking out the article below and go over each troubleshooting option that is available to get it back up and running. It will have you check things Safe Boot and resetting the NVRAM.

  • IMAC shuts down unexpected

iMac shuts down after ca. 1 hour - 1hr40 running.
Can't restart afterm have to wait 2 - 3 hrs. before restarting,

After digging through a bunch of different posts, I've come to the conclusion that I had a over heating problem. In fact, the fan stopped running altogether causing it to overheat, then shut down.
The vents on the bottom were completely clogged with compacted dust. It was so bad that I literally picked out chunks of dirt with a toothpick. I was able to clean the fans blades by spraying compressed air thought the top holes.
Now she runs cool as a cucumber but there is still one small problem. The fan does not restart when I manually put her to sleep. I've had to stick a small screwdriver down one of the vents on top to give the fan a little "kick start".
At least the problem is nowhere near as bad as I thought it was.

I have a similar issue with my older MacBook Pro 3,1 since Mavericks.  In Mavericks it would completely freeze.  In Yosemite it reboots.
On my machine somehow it is tied to whether I have Wifi turned on or off (whether associated with a connection or not).  I typically use my computer near the router and turn off the wifi.  Since Mavericks if I turn off my Wifi, it will eventually crash so I have to manually disassociate but leave wifi on to keep my computer from crashing.  Not sure where the [com.apple.calendar.store.log.caldav.coredav] errors fit in but I always see them shortly before a crash if wifi is off.

  • IMac Shuts down unexpectedly

After upgrading my mid-2010 17" iMac i7 to Lion 10.7.1 (from 10.7) it randomly shuts down.  If I restart, it will last a while longer.  Eventually it wont get passed the boot sequence.
Remove RAM and power for 10 minutes and I'm good to go for a short time.  If I boot to another disk (Bootcamp with Windows, a bootable CD with Linux, etc) I can run it for hours without issue (I even tried running some games from Windows Boot Camp to tax the machine and had no issue).  Go back to Lion 10.7.1 and the problems happen again.
Been on the phone with Apple Care a few times and not getting anywhere.  I can bring it in to an Apple store, but I can't get any free time to leave and this thing is heavy.
    Any ideas?
Note: Yes I have 16gb of RAM.  No this is not the random shutdown issue that was rampant a year ago because Apple gave the wrong specs to 3rd party vendors (I had that issue back then, but switched to Samsung RAM and haven't had an issue in almost a year).  To be safe, I've run a several memtest programs and Apple's hardware test program.  All came back clean.  Also reset pram, smc, system management controller, and tried safe mode.

    Hello Jeff C.
Your story is frustratingly familiar.  I have a late 2009 iMac 21 inch with 4 GB RAM.
In March 2011 it started to shut off randomly for no reason.  I would sometimes be able to turn it on again via the power switch but most times it wouldn't get past the boot sequence and just shut down gain.  If I left the power cord completely unattached for up to an hour or so, I could get the thing running but it would shut down again sometimes when I was not even using it!
Took it in for service.  The registered provider (not Apple) couldn't find anything wrong.  He left it on in the shop all weekend and it didn't shut down once.
Took it home and used a different power cord.  For two months no problems....
In May 2011 same thing started happening.  Took it in to Apple Store for a diagnostic and they recommended to change logic board which was done.  For six months everything worked fine.
Now in November I'm working in InDesign and push some keystrokes and bam! The thing shuts down and won't boot up if I turn it on again.  Finally get it going after leaving it unplugged for forty mins.  Doing a time machine backup (and nothing else is running) and there she goes again!
It's back in the shop again and I just know they'll say it didn't shut down for them.  Don't know if this is hardware or software related but getting so frustrated.  Just want it to work!  Do you have any updates on your end?
Sorry for long post....just needed to vent and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one this has happened to and that I'm not going crazy.

  • My iMac shuts down unexpectedly

I've got a iMac from I believe 2007 and it shuts down at least 15 minutes after boot up all the time. I've repartitioned the HD and reinstalled Mac OS X Lion. I ran an Apple Hardware Test from the original reinstall disks. I sthere any other way I can find out whats wrong with this before I bring it into an Apple store and pay money just for them to run diagnostics.

Before doing anything ensure you have a good backup of your system!!!!!!!!!
Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. Running it in the standard mode is pretty worhtless. Also check to see how much disk space is available on the HD.  You can do this by selecting the HD in Finder then typing  Command I (that's I as in Ivan) to see how big the HD is and how much space is available. Finally in Disk Utility check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the HD, it should say Verified, if it says anything else it's time to replace it.

  • IMac shuts down unexpectedly - Mountain Lion

Have recently installed Mountain Lion on my iMac mid -2011. Yesterday when i was on skype the mac shut down. I restarted it and then it made a funny noise nd then shut down again. Today when I leave in sleep mode it shuts down whenever I leave for more than 5 mins. This has never happened before and I suspect it could be something to do with installing ML. Has anyone else experienced this? Solution?

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitirion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • IMac shut down unexpectedly and automatically cleared cache + reset safari

for weeks now i've been dealing with the terrible problem my g5 shutting off for no apparent reason. it's happened anywhere from 2-50 times per day. on nearly ever occasion when the computer restarted it made the loud 'vroom' noise it typically does, but the last time it shut down there was no 'vroom' and when i went to safari my entire history had been reset. is there anyway to retrieve this (yes, i know it's probably the least of my problems, but there are a few things for a few weeks ago that i'd very much like to get back to TODAY).
    thanks,

I purchased an iMac approx 3 years ago.  We keep it on almost all the time, however the other night we noticed it was off.  We did not shut it off as we were downstairs watching a movie.  I unplugged the cord, waited 10 to 15 seconds, plugged it back in, wait for a few more seconds and turned it on.  It started up and was almost done booting.  Then it shut down again and I have only gotten it to attempt to turn on.  (the fan kicks in for about 2 seconds and then nothing) Any suggestions?

Try that process of resetting the SMC two or three more times, sometimes it takes more than once. if that doesnt work I could only suggest making an appointment and hauling it in for service.

  • IMac shutting down unexpectedly

    Hello,
my iMac i think needs some help . I will get it to an apple service centre, but before that i was wondering if i could do anything from home.
Today it shut down three times, (two while exporting quicktime files from FCP, and the other whilst burning a DVD and at the same time pluggin in my iPod) I know i'm stressing it out, but
what could be wrong here??. Also, my mouse jitters around instead of having a smooth movement. The computer overall is terribly slow....am i in risk of losing everything one of these days?
My DVD drive recently stopped reading dvds/cds (that's actually when things became worse!)
and my FAN sounds like a hoover (this has been going on for a while!).
    thank you
and please let me know if you need more info.

Well, you seem to have both adequate memory and free disk space, so it probably is a hardware problem. Do take it in and see what they come up with(you might just still be eligible for the Repair extension programs, but I doubt it).
    Please post back,

  • Imac shutting down unexpectedly after 20 minutes

G3 imac with 10.4 OS screen does blank and on-off switch start 'fluttering' quickly and cannot restart unless computer has been shut off for 30 minutes.
Tried to reload 10.4 from CD but computer shuts down before fully loaded?
Is this a hardware or software problem?
    Any advice?

I'd suggest you try asking in the iMac (CRT) area. This forum is for the new Intel-based iMac Core Duo and so perhaps not the most likely place for you to get a quick and accurate response.
    Good luck.
