Imac shuts itself down while in sleep mode after getting hot

We had a very hot day here in England for a change and now my 18 month old imac shuts down. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?

First Safeboot to clear  the dynamic loader shared cache and  observe if it has the same symptoms: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
Do a SMC reset:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Do a NVRAM/PRAM reset:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Backup all your data using Time Machine. Perform a clean install of OSX. Then migrate your data using your Time Machine backup.
Go to Apple Store. They should check it out for a hardware issue.

  • Helix shuts down while in sleep mode

Using windows 8.  Every time I shut the lid of my computer it goes into sleep mode. This is good, but after a while in sleep mode it either shuts down or does something that causes it to close all programs and require rebooting. How do i stop this from happening and just let it go in sleep mode forever?

It's intel's IRST function。When you press sleep, after some time(you can change the value in bios),it will save the data in memory into a special ssd partition to save power。
    How to:
Restart the helix, when the lenovo trademark appeared, you touch the text under the "lenovo", enter the bios.
select config, power, you will see “intel rapid start tech.”,see the description on the right side. When you understand the tech you can change the value now.
you can disable the IRST,then when you press sleep in windows by close the lib or touch the power on the charm,it will sleep until the battery out of power. you can change the time just as 8 hours, so you will not power the helix from bios start  after a night .
maybe my english is poor ,just remember :bios->config->power->intel rapid start technology->disable.

  • My 2008 15in macbook pro randomly shuts down while in sleep mode. What can I do?

I have a 2008 15in macbook pro that when it goes to sleep it will randomly shut down. Most times when I try to wake it up from sleep it will just shut itself down as well as when I close and reopen the computer it will just shut down. When I try to turn it back on it generally takes 2 to 3 tries to get it to finally come back on. What should I do? I think it might be a Hard Drive problem. Anything helps!

Hello californiabears and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
    Try resetting SMC:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
If you think you have a HD problem look at the HD in System reports:
Apple menu - About this Mac - More Info - System Report - SATA
Under SMART status does say "verified"?
    Otherwise:
Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks - Apple Support
Is that the original disk from 2008? If so it's due.

  • IMac does not starts once on sleep mode after last Mavericks update... Anyone with the same problem?

Since the last update, when my iMac goes to sleep mode it seems that the mouse or the keyboard can wake it up.  I have to do a "hard reset" everytime.  Anyone has this type a problem?

    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility
If the checkbox at the bottom marked
    Enable access for assistive devices
is checked, uncheck it and test.
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility
If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.
    Step 3
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, if any. Be sure to disconnect all USB hubs. If you use a keyboard or mouse plugged into a hub, plug the devices directly into a built-in USB port and remove the hub. Test.
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator for this step.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for Diagnostic and Usage Messages. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.) Select the last few messages that appear, if any, and copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

While in the sleep / standy mode my MacBook Pro shuts down the software automatically (e.g. Outlook, Firefox etc.) how can I stop it from doing it?
It's only been doing this since the last update (using snow leopard - Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
Colleagues who have recently upgraded to Lion report the same.
Thanks for any tips on how to change this setting.

  • I have had my new 21 inch iMac for 2 weeks in that time my iMac has shut itself down by itself without any prompting from myself.  It goes to screen saver, then shut itself down can anyone provide an explanation for this occurrance

Hello, purchased my 21 inch imac 2 weeks ago within the last week I have notice my imac shuts itself down after a short period of time once the screen saver is activated.  Is there anybody out there who can through some light on this matter.  Is it a common occurance?  is there anything to worry about?  Should it happen at all?
    Tony

When you say it shuts down, do you mean it powers off, so that you have to reboot it to continue? Or does it merely sleep, or blank the screen?

  • Iphone 4 will not power up. shut itself down after recording video and attemptimg to send via mms.

Iphone 4 shut itself down about 10 hours ago after I recorded a new video and attempted to send the video via mms.  Tried many times to power up using standard power up procedures.  I noticed that it seemed to be getting hot.  I removed the protective cover and the actual phone was very warm.  even after 2 hours it appeared to be overheating.  has not been dropped or gotten wet.  any solutions?  has this happened to anyone else before?

Hmmm, press and hold (about 10sec) the Home and Power button until you see the Apple logo. That restarts your iPhone and should fix your problem.

  • Mac shuts itself down during sleep.

When the Mac goes to sleep, it shuts itself down instead. This occurs when the machine goes to sleep automatically after a period of inactivity, and also occurs if sleep is selected from the Apple menu. Shutdown occurs immediately upon sleep, or sometimes after being asleep for a while.
When the Mac is restarted, no error message appears (the one which says that power was lost unexpectedly, and prompts you to run disk first aid).
The problem occus on most occasions that sleep mode is activated, but not every time.
Any help towards fixing this problem would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm having almost the same problem and I can't figure it out either. I put my computer to sleep and when I wake it up, the screen comes on with my full desktop, but everything is frozen. I can't open anything. I can't even force quit. I get no response from my mouse (other than being able to move it around- sometimes) and everything on the dock is unresponsive. I did disc repair– no problems reported. I repaired disc permissions– a few glitches, but all taken care of and okay. I restarted the computer, put it to sleep and same thing all over. Should I worry?

  • MBP shuts itself down during sleep

My MBP shuts itself down durning sleep... or, stays black when I open the lid after sleep.  The hard drive is on,  but no key pressing will get it running.  I have to hold down the power button, til it clicks off; then press it again to boot up from scratch.
Today, I booted up Console and under messages  found this:

is this the signature of Trojan?
    How do I correct this?

  • How do you prevent the computer from shutting down when in sleep mode?

How do you prevent the computer from shutting down when in sleep mode and plugged in?

    Thanks tjk.
Those are great suggestions and got me looking in places I had not considered before. Unfortunately, the problem remains. The System Preferences did not have the shut down option activated and there are no parental controls active on the computer.
    Any other suggestions are welcome.

  • My 20" iMac 2.66 shuts itself down

It seems to happen running Aperture 3. My first thought is that my temps may be climbing too high. The GPU temp is approx. 67 C and the CPU is at approx. 51 C (of course this is after it has been started back up and cooled down a bit).
Anyone have or heard of a similar situation?
    Thanks.

These CPUs regularly reach nearer 100C.   However, if the machine detects it has had too much heat in other areas, it will shut itself down.  I'd run the hardware test that came with your Mac: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

    Hi daveormond,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iMac. If you continue to have issues with your Mac shutting down part way through the boot up process, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful (given your description, it sounds like it could be either issue, or a combination of both):
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup - Apple Support
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Support

  • IMac running while in sleep mode?

I just got my 2011 iMac in the mail 2 days ago and everytime I put it in sleep mode, the screen goes off but the mac keeps running. The top of the mac stays a little warm in sleep mode, but not hot. I'm new to the mac and was wanting to know if this is normal, or is my settings off?

There are 2 levels of sleep, Display and Computer. If only the Display is sleeping after the auto timers have run out, then you may have a process that is keeping the computer from auto sleeping.
On that, work thru the following artical and call us in the morning.

  • Shutting itself down

I'm having a problem with my imac g5. It was fine yesterday but today I came home and it was off ( I usually leave it in sleep mode)
When I turned it on it was barely a few seconds before it shut itself down again. This keeps happening. It won't stay on but for a few minutes and then it shuts down. Any ideas on what could be happening? How much will it cost to fix?
    Thanks in advance!

Very, very common problem for these due to defective capacitors. Could be the power supply, the logic board, or both.
Look in Console App under "all messages" (in Applications>Utilities.) Where it says "String matching," enter "shutdown cause." What results do you get, if any?
If it's the non-iSight model, you can open the back rather easily and inspect the logic board for swollen or leaking capacitors. Just unscrew the 3 captive screws--don't try unscrewing them all the way, only enough to free the back at the bottom. Lift the cover up or off completely. (If removing the cover completely, slide it down towards you first to disengage it.) You'll see numerous small metal cans about 3/4" tall. The tops should be perfectly flat with not the slightest rounding.
You won't be able to look inside the power supply easily. It is secured with torx security screws and quite difficult to remove.

  • Imac shuts itself off

I have a 6 year old imacDV w/OS10.2 on it. Lately it has started shutting itself off while using it. When I turn it back on, the clock is always reset to December, 1969, at 6:02. Any ideas???
I usually leave the computer on 24/7 and it has worked flawlessly since I bought it.
    Thanks!

    Hi,Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The clock is resetting due to a defective internal battery (The battery powers the date/time info when you disconnect the iMac from the mains electricity supply). After 6 years you could expect this battery to be dead.
First reset the power management unit - follow the instructions in this document (Trouble Shooting Page 9). To replace the battery (Trouble Shooting Page 13) you'll need to crack the case on the iMac instructions are further down in that PDF.
I'm not clear why it's shutting itself down unless it's set to do that. Check the settings on Apple Menu > System Preferences... > Hardware > Energy Saver > Sleep tab > 'Schedule' .
