Imac shuts off during sleep mode

when in sleep mode my 2010 imac 21" shuts off after a couple of hours? It starts up fine but happens evertime its in sleep mode.

You may improve some of your power issues by resetting the SMC on your iMac by using the instructions found here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
The only other thing I can think of, outside hardware/power supply problems, is your power is getting cut off for a brief period. You can go to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Options > you can CHECK 'restart automatically after power failure' - if this is already selected, then I would think it maybe a hardware issue... let us know

  • IMac shuts off during sleep

I have an iMac G5 running 10.3.9. When it goes into sleep mode, a short time later the system completely shuts off. I have been out of town for a while, so I don't know exactly when this started, but my brother says it started a couple weeks ago. I would be surprised if any system-level hacks had been installed, since the rest of my family would be scared to try anything like that. As far as I know, nothing significant has been installed lately.
    A bit more info:
If the computer goes to sleep based on an inactivity timer, it will sleep for a while (flashing power light) and then turn off. If I select Apple > Sleep, it immediately shuts off. I've already reset the PRAM.
    Any ideas?
    iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Homer,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It would help us to know which G5 iMac "model" you have, how much RAM, etc. You can have this info displayed on the bottom of every post by going to 'preferences' which is located in the column on the right under your name, click on "My Settings" and filling in the information asked for.
This will help in providing you with the proper and/or correct troubleshooting solutions.
    Thank You.
PS: If you do not know the model of your Mac, see Knowledge Base Article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724#301724 How to identify your iMac

  • Pismo shuts off during sleep-mode

    Hi
I realized that my Pismo occasionally shuts off while in sleep mode. When I press a key to wake it up the pulsating green light turns off and I need to press the on/off-key. The computer then reboots normally.
    Thanks! Felix

    Hi
In meantime, it is not "occasionally" but always.
    1. PMU-reset with the small button on the rear did not help either.
    2. I believe I cannot hear the HD after opening the lid. The flashing green light turns off. I simply press the on/off-button and the Pismo starts up as if I turned it off.
    3. HDD is new, Seagate 120 GByte.
Actually a few weeks ago I obtained a Pismo with a defect power borad and swapped CPU-cards due to my bad L2-cache. Worked great!
Afterwards I realized, that the casing of the other Pismo was in much better shape (mine has a crack next to the bottom Apple-logo and a very shiny upper part). What I finally did was the following:
Stripped both down to the point where practically the logic board and metal frame was the last part in there.
Built up on the lower part of the ebay-Pismo with my power-board and practically all other parts from my own functioning Pismo and with the new HDD. Upper case and keyboard is from the ebay-Pismo, which was apparently used very little.
I guess I will take everything apart again and make sure that my own logic board runs in there. Maybe the logicboard of the eBay-Pismo was damaged together with the power boards and AHT doesn´t recognize it (System Profiler shows an error with regards to the sound system, but sound works).
Strange, if I could only tell whether this is hardware related.
    Thanks for any input
    Felix

  • PowerNap Time Machine backup?  USB Data shuts off in sleep mode!

So how is PowerNap supposed to do a Time Machine backup when USB is turned off in sleep mode?  Everything else seems to work, but when I wake my computer back up, I am greeted with a message that the external hard drive was removed improperly, and no backups were completed overnight.
I'm using a MacBook Air Mid-2012 and a 2TB WD External HDD that uses it's own power supply.

A USB drive should be fine.
Right before going to bed, I duplicated a bunch of large files and then went to sleep with my USB hard drive plugged in. When I woke up I realized that Time Machine did back up about one hour after the computer was asleep.

  • Phone shuts off in sleep mode

over the past few days, when the iphone goes into sleep mode, it shuts down completely. This only happens in the sleep mode. If the leave the display on, without putting it in the sleep mode, the phone stays on. Also, the battery level indicators shows full strength, but in the setting mode, under usage, the usage and standby times are blank. It indicates that the usage and standby times will be displayed after iphone is fully charged. Is there a problem with the battery? Is that why the iphone keeps shutting off. I tried to reset the phone, but the problem presists. Do I need to completely reset it using itunes?

Exactly the same thing happened to me after upgrading to 1.1.4 firm. Did you solve it? I can't take the phone right now to the Apple Store, as I'm working in Spain. It seems to be a software problem, as it was working fine with firm 1.1.3.
Need help, don't want to be without my iPhone so much time...

  • Why does my Nexus Galaxy turn off during sleep mode?

I can't put my phone is sleep mode for longer then 10 seconds and it will shut off and I can't upgrade till next year any advice?

I can understand how you feel about having issues with your phone Elisa292005, especially power cycling and features not functioning properly. I know upgrading may fix the issue but we would like to fix the problem first. The information that Ann154 provided was great. Safe mode can tell you if an application is causing the problem and that you should remove it quickly. I also would like to know if the phone id damaged? How long have you had this issue? If you are unable to upgrade, we have many other options that may work for you. First, do you have insurance? Secondly, if you don't have insurance, take a look at this option for replacing your phone http://vz.to/16vfYHl . Lastly, please check to ensure you have the most updated software. Software updates can help the phone function better. I look forward to hearing from you and please keep us posted.

  • OS X Mavericks v10.9.4 Update still does not fix the wifi shut off in sleep mode problem

OS X Mavericks v10.9.4 Update was supposed to fix the wifi connectivity problem with my iMac. Wifi disconnects in sleep mode and does not connect when awakened.  Must reconnect manually every time. PITA.

Your observation is correct about wifi disconnection in sleep mode. That is normal, you may want to check to see if your Mac supports Power Nap/is enabled- OS X: About Power Nap
The reconnect should be automatic within a few seconds.
Does it happen with multiple wifi networks or just one?
Have you tried deleting and re-adding the wifi network?

  • Lion causes iMac fan noise during sleep mode

Ever since upgrading to Lion, my iMac's (early 2009 model) fan will randomly go into high speed mode (very loud) in the middle of the night when the iMac is in sleep mode. This seems to happen more often if I manually put the iMac into sleep rather than letting it automatically go into sleep mode as defined in the Energy Saver settings.
Anyone else experiencing this?  I posted a feedback report (http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html) so I hope Apple can fix this soon.
    Eric

    Hi Mendl,
Ok, what I discovered after running the AHT test, long version, was that the test doesn't see the actual failure I had in a new iMac. It turned out to be what I suspected all along, which was a defective temperature sensor, or more likely a factory assembly issue on that component.
They replaced my computer and now all is well.
    Thanks, for reinforcing my suspicions!
    Keep up the good work.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • IMac powers off in sleep mode after Mountain Lion installation

After I installed Mountain Lion on my 2010 iMac, it will power off after I don't use it a while. It used to just go to sleep, I'd shake the mouse, and it would come back up. Now it powers off and I have to power it back up every time.
My Macbook has NOT had this problem since Mountain Lion install. It is fine.

Try doing a smc and pram reset.

My iMac sometimes turns off during sleep mode, I did call apple care and went through utilities and the tech support said that issue should be resolved, but it happen again today. Has anyone else had the same issues? Is this also the start of some bigger issues down the line?

    HI BC,
Check System Preferences/Energy Saver. Click the Schedule button bottom right in that pane and make sure it's not set to turn off at a certain time.

  • I have an iMac (Mid 2010) and am running 0sx 10.8.5 and the WiFi always loses connection during sleep mode. I have seen numerous different solutions none of which seem to work. Can anyone help?

I have an iMac (Mid 2010) and am running 0sx 10.8.5 and the WiFi always loses connection during sleep mode. I have seen numerous different solutions none of which seem to work. Can anyone help?

Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved. Make sure the box marked
Remember networks this computer has joined
    is checked.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading
Symptom: After restarting or waking from sleep, my computer might not connect to the Internet
    3. Reset the PRAM.
    4. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    5. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    6. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    7. Repair permissions on the startup volume.
    8. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    9. Reset the System Management Controller.
    10. This step shouldn't be necessary, but has been advised by Apple Support in some cases, apparently as a workaround for a bug. Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences. If applicable, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner to unlock the settings. Enter your administrator login password when prompted.
Select the Power Adapter tab and uncheck the boxes marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    and
              Enable Power Nap...
if present. Then, if the computer is a MacBook, select the Battery tab and uncheck
              Enable Power Nap...
    11. Reinstall OS X.

  • IMac 2009 (21 inch) making hard drive noises during sleep mode - normal??

    Hi there guys,
I have an iMac 21 inch (2009) , 3ghz C2D, 4GB Ram, 1TB hard drive (the hard drive was upgraded straight thru apple, when i bought it i paid extra for a 1tb hard drive, its not a DIY hard drive upgrade)
aniways, I recently noticed that during sleep mode, occasionally (not all the time) I can hear some faint clicking / hard drive noise, which is really weird because i put the imac in sleep mode and it really shouldnt be doing that no?
My 13 inch macbook pro 2010 never does this in sleep mode, its always dead silent
Im just wondering if this hard drive accessing / clicking noise during sleep mode is normal in imacs??

Im just wondering if this hard drive accessing / clicking noise during sleep mode is normal in imacs?
No it should not be doing anything but sleeping. The SMC controls sleep, try resetting it.
    Reset the SMC
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Detach the computer's power cord.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Reattach the computers power cable.
    • Turn on the computer.
