IMac (SL) keeps intermittent dropping of DNS connection

A number of times, I step away from my iMac only to come back and find its dropped its connection to my DNS servers (OpenDNS). My MacBook (still on 10.5.8) never does this.
Looking at console, this error comes up every 2 seconds:
21/11/2009 15:31:31 mDNSResponder[18] ERROR: mDNSPlatformTCPConnect - connect failed: socket 81: Error 13 (Permission denied)
Is this a known issues? Any fixe for this?
Thanks

I haven't had the problem since my upgrade to 10.5.6. Unfortunately, I'm having the same problem with my wife's iMac running Tiger. If we walk away for several minutes the internet connection is dropped. I was considering upgrading to Leopard (which is why I'm checking this forum), but now I'm not so sure.
We're both wireless. The issue isn't with the router. In fact, I replaced the router since the problem started.
I suspect there isn't a problem with a wired solution. However, the router is in a different room from my wife's machine. Is there any way to get a second router to place near the problem iMac to "catch" the signal from the first router, then hard wire it into the iMac? Not an elegant soluation, but perhaps it would work?

  • Imac 10.7.5 drops all network connections

I am using an iMac 10.7.5 that has started to drop the network connection (both ethernet and wireless). Using in a corporate environment on a Cisco switch. No other computers on this switch losing their connections. Have an Mac Book Pro that can connect on the same switch without a problem. I have deleted preferences and restarted but it still drops. Will last about 30 minutes then it drops. The only way to restore it is to restart. Have repaired permissions ad nauseum. Tried booting to recovery (Command-R on startup) but it just goes to my login screen. Trying not to reinstall OS but may have to. Any other suggestions?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Intel iMac keeps randomly dropping Airport connection

My Intel Duo core iMac keeps randomly dropping its Airport connection. It never used to do this until a few months ago. The Airport menu bars randomly show half grey, or all grey, and either I have to turn Airport on/off from the menu to get all the bars back to black, or sometimes they just come back on.
Logically, I guess it can only be three things, a problem in the (a) Intel iMac (eg. airport card), (b) my Airport Express Base station, or (c) my ADSL 2+ NetComm modem router. Now, fortunately I have a first generation white G5 iMac set up side by side to help diagnose the problem. When the Intel iMac airports bars go half grey or all grey, the Airport bars on the white G5 iMac stay black or at worst show one grey bar.
At face value, I guess this points to the Intel iMac itself being the problem? Or could it be that the Airport Express Base station is the problem, and the Intel iMac is more sensitive to the problem than the white G5 iMac? I'm sort of leaning to the Airport Base station as the problem because when the Intel iMac drops out, the white G5 coincidentally drops out albeit by only one grey bar generally.
Its quite annoying because its so unpredictable and intermittent. My Intel iMac has full Applecare, but I would feel stupid to haul it into Apple only for them to say I wasted their time and the problem must be the Airport Base station/modem router.
    All comments welcome!

Well, for what its worth, I'll give you the update to my problem. The Apple technician said during all their testing, my Intel iMac never dropped the Airport connection once - and the problem might be some interference between the iMac and the Airport Express unit. That didn't quite make sense because my white G5 iMac seems fine; the occasional variable signal but not a full drop out. Anyway, the technician said he applied a 'few software updates' - although I don't know what these updates were, especially since I always apply Apple public updates as they are released.
Now, when I got my Intel iMac back about a week ago, I am very happy to say the dropout/weak signal problem appears to be no more (touch wood). Thus, I don't know what was done, but it has seemingly fixed things so far.
Would anyone know what updates Apple might have applied - and I assume its something that is not readily available to the public, since I always keep an eye on public software updates.

  • Time Capsule intermittently drops connection

    Hello all.
Right around the release of Mountain Lion I started having issues with my Time Capsule.  I'm not sure the issue has anything to do with Mountain Lion directly since I didn't actually update until today thinking it may help solve my issue.  But basically, my TC intermittently drops the Internet connection just long enough to interrupt what I'm doing but comes back in just a few seconds.  For example, if I'm playing a game, the game server will disconnect me.  I wait about 30 seconds and then I can log back in.  If I'm browsing a website the page will just freeze and go blank or came back in just a few seconds depending on how long the signal seems to be gone.  The computer I'm on when this happens the most is not using wireless, I run an Ethernet cord directly to the TC since wireless is generally unreliable for gaming but I have experienced the issue on other devices.
My setup is my TC is being used as a router so it's connected directly to the modem from my ISP.  There are a few other devices directly plugged into the TC and a few that use it wirelessly.  I've done some troubleshooting and if I connect my computer directly to the ISP modem I have no issues, so I know it must be the TC.  Nothing about my setup has changed in over a year and this problem just randomly cropped up.  The only thing I can think of is a few weeks ago I reset my router to factory and renamed my network when I got rid of my Airport Express and started using Apple TV.  But this issue started even before I set up Apple TV so I don't think it's that.
I've been researching the issue for days and can't seem to find a solution.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

What modem (make and model.. and type of broadband) is it and is it working as a router.. when you say you test by plugging directly to the ISP modem .. what changes do you have to make for that to work?? Does the TC show a double NAT error when it is connected to the modem?
Gen3 TC have a nasty board fault.
Can you check the log and see if you are getting disconnection error messages.
Can you downgrade the TC firmware to 7.5.2 just to test? If you are correctly using it with a single router in the network,, either the modem router or the TC.. as the only router.. I have a pretty poor opinion of the later firmware. It is only a test and you can upgrade again to 7.6.1 without any big hassle.
But do save the configuration and do a full factory reset when you go backwards.
    See board fault info here.

  • My MBP is intermittently dropping wifi connection.

I have a MacBook Pro (MBP), about 3 1/2 years old. In the past 6 months, it has started intermittently dropping the wifi connection to my router. Other Macs in our family are not having this same problem, so I don't think it's the router. This is occurring several times a day. My browser simply stops loading webpages, and my email just stops sending and receiving. Sometimes I can get it to connect again by turning the wifi off and then on again, without quitting the apps. Other times I have to quit the apps in addition to stopping and re-starting wifi. I'm starting to wonder if my MBP is getting too cluttered with software, plugins, processes that automatically startup, etc., and I'm wondering if there is a recommended way to "clean this up". Years ago on the dark side (i.e. in the PC world), I used to backup all my data, re-format the HDD, re-install Windows and apps, and restore my data. I don't know how to do that on a Mac...too new at the game. Also, if you have any other suggestions that would help me diagnose the problem or fix the problem, I would be happy to hear them.

Well its like you said before it is probably your Pro, just wanted to confirm so. Check one more thing just to make sure that it is your Pro and not a network issue.
    1) At the time the internet is not working, is it working (at that exact same time) on any other device? If so how many devices are connected at that exact same time? If you can get the IP off of one of those devices and see if you can ping it from your Pro.
    My thoughts are as follows:
    1) Too many devices on your Wireless Access Point
    2) Too much bandwidth going in/out so it is cutting something out.
I just want to ensure that the problem is/is not your Pro before we go running off and reinstalling OSX.

  • I bought a new iMac this week but am struggling with the WiFi as it intermittently drops.  I have an HP notebook in the same room without any problems. It keeps on "looking for networks" it then connects and drops and starts again.

I am connected to the internet but it keeps on dropping all the time, same with my email accounts.  Other hardware is running well without any issues.  I have gone through the Wi_Fi faultfinding tree but still the same.  I have also spoken to a Apple sales consultant in the store that suggested the software be reloaded which could be the case but I doubt.  Any ideas?????

  • My 4-year old AirPort Extreme intermittently drops out (no signal to my iMac Book).  The laptop shows reception of other nearby Wi-Fi transmitters, but not mine.  I have changed the bands, but the problem comes back.  Transmitter problem or interference?

My 4-year old AirPort Extreme intermittently drops out (no signal to my iMac Book).  My hard-wired iMac still has internet capability.  The laptop shows reception of other nearby Wi-Fi transmitters, but not mine.  I have changed the bands back and forth, but the problem comes back.  How can I check if it is a transmitter problem or interference?

Let me see if I can suggest a strategy.
I have talked with my ISP and he said that I am not the only one with an Airport Extreme with the same issue. He said to try to write the DNS direclty, rather than using the Auto settings - still nothing works.
What modem do you have and what sort of broadband?
What mode is the AE in.. router or bridge?
I have an Airport Express from 2010. Since about a month and definetly since yesterday, I cannot connect any device via Wifi to it although LAN connection works correctly.
Is this express or extreme.. the rest of the post you refer to extreme.
What is the actual model number of the AE? A1xxx from the base or the part number MCxxx from the box.
If the AE is bridge.. I want you to try a different method.. put it in router mode.. don't worry about double NAT but ensure the IP range of the modem /router is different to the AE.. so if one is 192.168.x.x then the AE on default at 10.x.x.x is fine.. if the main router is 10.x then move the AE to 192.168.x.x
Make sure the guest wireless is off.
Using a 5.6 utility on your 10.6.8 OS mini go to the log and see if the wireless is registering..
You should see lists of wireless connection like..
Post as many screenshots of the setup as you can.. it helps loads.
IPv6 is starting to become a pain.. try it off and try local link and try auto.. in the computer.

    Hello sstefanik
Check out the articles below to troubleshoot your issues with getting a proper connection with Wi-FI. Try creating a new Network Location and join your network to see if you can get on that way.

  • My MBP keeps dropping the internet connection

Since yesterday, my MBP (Late 2011) keeps dropping the internet connection from my Airport Express.  I'm still connected to the network, it just loses the internet connection on the MBP.  I restart the computer, and it works for a few minutes.  I turn off router, and it works for a few mimutes...but no matter what I do, after 2-3 minutes, I get the exclamation mark in the wifi indicator saying there is no internet connection.
And this is only happening on that single MBP.  All of the other devices in the house, another MBP (mid 2012), an iPad (retina with lightning connector) and 2 iPhones (one 4 and one 5), can all connect.  And the router we have is an airport express.
Why is this happeneing only on the one computer, and how can I fix this?
    Thanks.

First, changing your DNS settings could not possibly have any effect on this problem.
When you see an exclamation point in the Wi-Fi menu, from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.
Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.

It's important that you have a steady WiFi connection, ZealousEdge. What phone do you have? Is your phone unable to connect to any WiFi network? If you can, please try deleting the saved WiFi network and re-adding it.

  • Since I have downloaded IOS5 on my IPAD and synced to my IMac, Safari keeps dropping off before downloading the website, is slow, also an icon which accessed open safari windows is no longer available.  Apps trouble too.  Help?

Since I have downloaded IOS5 on my IPAD2 and synced to my IMac, Safari keeps dropping off before site is downloaded and is slow.  There was an icon that showed how many windows were open on Safari and when pressed displayed them, that has disappeared and apps do not always download.  Sometimes by making several/many attempts, it eventually downloads the website or app, but this is not right.  When trying to dowload any lonks from an email, they simply do not open, it keeps going back to the home screen.  Does anybody have any suggestions?  I only bought the IPAD 2 in June!

Also the touch screen does not seem to be responding adequately.  Thank you for any help you can give.

  • I have a BTHub4 - My iMac, iPhone, and children's iPads all connect to the internet no problem. I cannot get my 2 MacBook Pros or my partners MacBook Air to connect. Have tried diagnostics - says to change DNS but  it is correct.

I have a BTHub4 - My iMac, iPhone, and children's iPads all connect to the internet no problem. I cannot get my 2 MacBook Pros or my partners MacBook Air to connect. Have tried diagnostics - says to change DNS but  it is correct. I have re-set both router and all laptops - no joy. They can all see the network but cannot connect.

This is extraordinary. I have moved the router and also tried resetting it to its factory strings.  We have had this router for over a year and all our devices have always worked. Now all four laptops will not connect to the internet. Only one oMac and our phones and iPad.
I have had far more devices running at once before but now all laptops are timing out on connection. Some say this iIP address is already being used but if I manually set to a slightly different IP address it does not help, noir if I manually set to the correct IP address. Why would all our laptops (four) suddenly be unable to connect?

  • IMac Airport continues to drop connection

I seem to be having the exact same issue that many of you have.  My iMac is the only piece of hardware in my house that has this issue.  The iMac will randomly drop its internet connection.  If you turn off airport and back on it will reconnect just fine, however this is a huge problem.  I can't stay connected long enough to download anything of size from anywhere.  Several apps, iTunes, home sharing.. I can't complete any of it because this connection always drops.
I've seen SEVERAL posts from people with the same issue, and it seems to center around iMacs purchased in 2011, which is what mine is.  Has there been a solution ever verified?

Seems even worse with 10.7.4, some have fixed it by going back to 10.7.3
But might see if this is along the same lines...

I know that apple have released a rubbish version of mac that has problemos with internet sharing
    so here is da answer
    1. go to finder>(computer name)>macintosh HD>library>preferences
    2. copy the entire systemconfiguration folder and systemconfiguration.old folder to your desktop
    3. restart mac and device which you share intenet to
then you have internet that is about 3x slower than the da 10.7.3 intenet sharing, but works
then, just wait for apple to release da 10.7.4 fixed
    please use da steps!

  • How do I keep my Ipad from dropping its wireless connection?

How do I keep my Ipad from dropping its wireless connection?
Most of the time, my iPad does not maintain a connection to the interenet via my wifi router. My PC laptop has continuous connection, so I know it is not the internet connection.
Is there a way to trouble shoot this? Can I purchase a dedicated IP Address for my Ipad? This is beyond aggrevating since internet activity is the main reason I purchased the pad.
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Poet Margo

I would suggest that you give Apple Tech Support a call and go over your settings under WI-FI and General Settings as well as your router settings etc.. There are all sorts of things I could tell you to try but this forum is not the best place to go over all the numerous settings that could be the issue. Just call them and they will walk you through the proper trouble shooting steps.
