IMac slow and reboot takes 5 minutes after Yosemite

I updated my late 2012 27" iMac from the latest Mavericks to Yosemite.  now it takes 30+ second between mouse click and action.  For example, if I click on iTunes it takes 30 seconds to a minute before iTunes opens.  I get the pinwheel while waiting.  I rebooted and the startup hangs on the progress bar for several minutes, then black screen for several minutes, then eventually gets to desktop.
what would be the normal steps to start troubleshooting this issue?  I am relatively new to macs and haven't had this type of issue before.
thanks in advance!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Mac Mini is very slow and rebooting takes 20-30 minutes

    Hi
My Mac Mini has just been updated to 10.10.3 and it seems to work very good. Then same days ago the new smaller update arrived and I installed it.
It is extremely slow and a reboot can take about 20-30 minutes.
The Task monitor does not show any extrem CPU values. Open Preference takes about one minute.
My Mac Book Pro on the other hand is working 100% perfect after the lates update. Same go with all Mac Books at the office.
I do not know what to do: A try to find what makes it so slow, B reinstall Mavericks  (luckily I have made a USB installer)
    Any tips are most welcome.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
A Mac that spontaneously begins to exhibit symptoms such as you describe usually has a hard disk that has failed. Unless all the information on that Mini can be considered disposable, don't do anything else until you back up.

Why is does my apple run SLOW.you go to open a program and the circle thing just spins for a delayed period of time.  You change from typing in a word doc and go to say email or internet and it takes several minutes to allow you open anything up.  Like it is frozen.  I have tried rebooting the computer and it works for a few minutes then gets stuck.

Which model iMac do you have?
How large is your HD and how much space do you have left?

Use Software Update or the OS 10.6.8 combo update to update your OS.  Also, update everything SU has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • I turn my iMac on and it starts ok but after a minute the monitor goes black

I turn my iMac on and it starts ok but after a minute the monitor goes black, sometimes it comes back on sometimes it stays off, this has only happened since Apple replaced the hard drive.

Then, contact the Apple repair station that did the work.

  • My iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when Iog off an account. I looked at the Console for a log but I am not sure what I am looking for. What is the best way to try to find what is causing this?

    Hello,
I have an issue where my iMac crashes and reboots 9/10 times when I log my wife's account off. I'd like to get it resolved as it is very annoying. We switch between accounts all the time and everytime it crashes I lose a bunch of info from my account. Can anyone help me understand how to fix this issue?
After the reboot a window tells me that my system has recovered from a seriour issue (sounds much like Window$ to me...) and a crash report is show:

ordered recovery media from Toshiba and installed it.  ....  I tried to call Toshiba support, but because I am outside my warranty, I was told I would be charged for support.
It is running Windows 8..even though it is supposed to be on 8.1 (according to the sticker on the bottom of the laptop).
The product key is buried in the hardware.
According to the spec above, the original model shipped with Windows 8 and needed to be upgraded. My guess is that they later shipped the same model with Windows 8.1.
It appears Toshiba shipped the wrong recovery media.
    Explain that when you call.

Im using a Macbook Pro, running a Mac OS 10.6.8, with 400GB  free of space and it is running slow. It takes more than 15 minutes to start up and things like that. I cant seem to do anything as it is so slow. The 'beachball of death' is also present during start up. What should I do? Please help

    Try these two steps first.
Get the Original Installation disk and boot the MBP holding down the C key.  When you get to the point where you see a menu bar on the top of the display, select UTILITIES.  From the drop down menu select DISK UTILITY>FIRST AID.  Run verify and repair.
See if there is any improvement.
    Try a Safe Boot:

  • Mavericks boot takes 5 minutes after Boot Camp

The boot of my MacBook Air is taking too much time, about five minutes according to my tests.
Yesterday I reinstalled OS X and then installed Windows 8.1 on a Boot Camp partition. After choosing the boot disk from OS X settings, the boot of my OS X partition takes some minutes, instead of the previous 11-12 seconds. The boot stops on Mac logo and loading indicator for 5 minutes.
Instead, Windows is loading very fast.
    Any solution?

  • IMac Slow and Hard drive Rumbling

Hi there, I have the mid 2009 24inch iMac. Its been pretty good, but over the last couple months its been really slowing down.
The Hard Drive is more then 50% empty and the system is completely up to date. (Snow)
What I have noticed is every time it tries to perform an action the Hard dive makes a noise.
Whilst looking for an answered to this problem, someone on another post describes the noise:
    'like your stomach rumbling'
It is whilst rumbling when it dramatically slows down the iMac, as if its trying to think. I have no idea why this happens, i'm guess the iMac is looking for information.
On a windows I would normal defrag and disk clean but as Macs don't need to be defragged, so im not sure what to do? I don't particularly want to wipe and reinstall as my application will take forever to install and update.
Also on other posts I hear the Hard drive isn't actually ment to make a noise as Apple try and make their products silent.
To Sum up, my iMac is running incredible slow and freezing doing simple tasks e.g. Opening Safari and playing videos, And every few seconds i hear that Hard drive rumbling noise (Its quite loud, noticeable from the other side of the room)

First, while started up normally, run Disk Utility. Select the internal drive in the sidebar, right click on it, and select Information. Next to +S.M.A.R.T. Status+, it should say Verified. On the +First Aid+ tab, run +Repair Disk Permissions+.
Then, insert your Snow Leopard installation disc, and restart with the C key held down. You will eventually get to the first Installer screen. Go up to the menu bar and run Disk Utility under Utilities. This time, run +Repair Disk+. Note if any errors are reported, and if there are errors, note if they are repaired. Then quit Disk Utility and Installer to start up normally.
but as Macs don't need to be defragged
That's not entirely true. Mac OS X will defragment smaller files in the background, but it does not defragment larger files and free space. So if you do a lot of add and deleting of large files (such as video files), there can be some issues with fragmentation. But with more typical use and 50% free space remaining (and a Mac that is less than one year old), it should not be a problem.
It is possible that your hard drive is failing, so be sure to have a good backup of at least your personal data, or use Time Machine.

  • Imac slow and Freezes PLEASE HELP!

Hello i have and imac G5 i bought it in about june of 2005...
It was running very slow and always freezing and then i upgraded the RAM to 1gb
and it started working much better. then i upgraded to OS Leopard andalso pro tools LE 7.4
and since then has been performing slow and freezing all the time. ai recently added another gig of RAM just to see if that was the problem , but it seems to be working just as slow. Does anybody know what it might be. Its a 1.6 GHZ power PC G5 and has a 80GB HD and have about 20 GB free so i dont think thats it. Please let me know if any of you have had this problem or know how to fix it thanks

Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from your computer.
Repair your disk from your System DVD.
Repairing permissions from the Tiger or Leopard DVD
Boot up from your Tiger or Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is able to complete the repair now click on the "Repair permissions" button.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.
    ===============
    Get a larger HD
    ===============
Use Software Update to update your OS to OS 10.5.6.
Afterwards, repair permissions & restart your computer.
Your system info confirms you are still using an outdated version - OS 10.5.4.

  • Why is FF 6.0.2 SO slow ? It takes 2 minutes to open any given web page

What details can I give ? It's taking ages to open the pages. Even if I am already on a page and click "home" just to refresh the page it takes a minute to load it. and 60 seconds is a long time.

Did it work fast in 6.0.1? or 5.0? Are you really sure that the problems you're describing started in this particular version.
Could you go to mozilla.org and download 7.0 and see if that solves it for you again? It's a much faster version.
