IMac Slow Boot/Start up with firewire disk connected

I have recently purchased a a WD FreeAgent 1Tb external disk, to use as a Time Machine drive.
Since connecting this drive, the boot time has increased from less than a minute to nearly 5 mins.
I presume my iMac is doing some kind of check of this drive, and because its 1TB it is taking an age. Is there anyway to get my computer to ignore this disk on start up?
Is this a problem with Leopard? IS it resolved in snow leopard.
I have read some posts that suggest unplugging the drive on each start up, is this really what i have to do?, as its a bit of a pain.

It is not a general problem with Leopard. I have a 750GB drive that is used for Time Machine (via USB 2.0), a FireWire external drive, up to three iPods (FireWire and USB), and sometimes a smaller emergency/maintenance startup external drive connected during startup, and the startup time is not noticeably affected based on what is or is not connected.
Can you explain which part of the startup sequence is being delayed. Is the screen still grey? Has the Apple logo appeared with the spinning wheel? Has the screen turned blue? Is it that last part, when the Desktop is being assembled on the screen?
Have you reset PRAM?

Have you run Disk Utility and used +Repair Disk Permissions+ on your startup volume recently.
Since the issue seems to be related to this 1TB drive, have you run Disk Utility and used +Repair Disk+ on that drive, to check for disk directory or disk data corruption errors? Time Machine does some complex file management, so such errors are quite possible, and that may be the cause of the delay during startup.

• Imac running 10.8.2 often does not start up with firewire drives connected

I have a mid 2007 imac running osx 10.8.2 and it will nit restart with two firewire drives connected if it has been running for sometime. If i disconnecr and restart and then connect the drives and then restart again it will restart.

a brody's guess is a good one. Please also look at what Apple says in Gray screen appears during startup

Lion very slow starting apps with Firewire 800 drive mounted.
When my Firewire 800 drive is in sleep mode, when I start up an app like MS Excel or Addressbook. I get a spining wheel and a delay before the app launches. Any ideas? Never happened in 10.6.

Long shot: What format is the drive?

• How to boot always from a firewire disk?

Hello,
I hope someone can help me on this.
My HD is almost dead and it's making a lot of noise. I have managed to create a boot disk
on an external disk connected through Firewire.
What shall I do now to have the HD definetly unmounted and have the boot always from the firewire disk?
Thanks in advance
Tom

I've had a similar problem with an external drive that was USB powered.
In my case, the system was looking for a boot device before the drive was ready.
I had a friend that was good with OpenFirmware add a delay before booting to give the drive time to become ready. Added 5 seconds to the boot process, but it works!
Like cldjr said, hold the Option key (⌘) when powering up, if the drive shows up there, I'd guess it's the problem I described...
Anyone good with OpenFirmware??

• My G5 iMac cannot boot up from its hard disk

My G5 iMac cannot boot up from its hard disk - I get the alternating Mac OS folder and the ? Folder which I understand means the system cannot be found.
On recommendation from a friend I tried replacing the battery - no difference.
However, I can boot up from the CD/DVD drive from the OSX installer disk, DiskWarrior, Drive Genius and Techtools Pro. But none of these utilities can see my hard disk to see if it needed repairing.
In fairness at one point DiskWarrior did see the drive and I was able to replace the directory safely. However, on subsequent reboots nothing can see the disk.
Suspecting the hard disk I bought a new one and a USB/SATA casing to mount the old drive in to see if I could get anything off of it. The good news so far is that the old drive (now mounted in the new USB casing) can be seen and read on my daughters iMac. So all my information is safe and also now backed up.
Having installed the new disk I found it also cannot be seen by any of the above utilities. I have since formatted it in the USB casing and put it back in the iMac but it still cannot be seen.
As a test I installed a new system on an old 40Gig Lacie Firewire drive attached to my iMac. This works and boots ok - sometimes.
I am now experiencing the necessity to force shutdown and restart from the startup button several times before the external disk is recognised. And most times it freezes after 30 minutes or so.
I might also add that after some force shutdowns/startup I get little or no chimes. And sometimes when trying to reset the PRAM get no second chime. On other occasions I do.
Now I am totally stuck and wondering if anyone can throw some light on why my iMac can boot up from a variety of CD/DVD utilities and sometimes an external Firewire disk but not from its own hard disk which, as I have already said, can be seen on my daughter's iMac but not by mine, so its not the disk.
Does anyone have any suggestions at all before I bite the bullet and take it in for a diagnosis and repair (depending on cost).
Thanks

Could be the logic board, in which case you would need to take it in. Since the drives are good, and the directory was repaired, the logic board is about all I can think of.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
{ sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
{ launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
Step 4
ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal.

• MacBook Pro Boot Hangs when Firewire Disk Connected

I have a 13" Late 2011 MacBook Pro with SSD running Mountain Lion 10.8.1. I have a 1 TB WD Firewire disk attached. I boot from the internal SSD.
On a regular basis when I turn my computer on, it starts up but gets hung during the boot process. If I turn it back off, disconnect the FW and then turn it back on, it boots normally. I can then plug back in the FW and it runs fine.
This problem has started since I upgraded OSX, although I added the SSD around the same time. I have updated to the latest firmware on the external WD disk. All Mountain Lion updates have been loaded.
Any ideas how to fix this problem or where to look for further information.

• Help!!! My iMac will NOT start up from any disk!

I was attempting to delete some files that had been in a separate partition on my older TM backup, in order to copy it to my new 2TB external drive. (The first time, it copied it as two partitions, which was NOT what I wanted! It worked fine, except that it needed more room already!)
In retrospect, these files appeared to be an alias of all my system, application & user folders. which I was unable to trash, but was able to trash most of them individually. Big mistake!
My iMac is getting a "?", a file icon and a 0 w/a line through it.
So, I apparently have all these key folders in my trash (I was unable to get rid of them). Unfortunately have been unable to start it with either of my two TM drives (both had been unmounted), nor my cloned drive, nor my OS install drive or any other utility drives.
Any suggestions to try before I bring it in to my local Apple store?
Thank you!
PS- I just heard of Steve Jobs death, and am so saddened to hear it...

I said "My iMac is getting a "?", a file icon and a 0 w/a line through it."
I should have included the folder icon that alternates w/the above two ...
Please! Any help (and/or suggestions) is appreciated!

• Boot from san with local disk

I have some B200M3's with local disk. I would like to configure them to boot from san. I've setup a service profile template with a boot policy to boot from CD first and then the SAN. I have a local disk configuration policy to mirror the local disks. I've zoned the machines so that it presently only sees one path to the storage because I'm installing windows and I don't want it to see the disks funky because of multiple paths to the same disk. When I boot the machine it sees the disk. I boot to the Windows 2012R2 iso and load the drivers for the cisco mlom and then the single lun will appear. The local disk will also appear. It can't install Windows 2012R2 on the SAN disk only the local disk. It sees the local disk as disk 0 and the san disk as disk 3. I don't know how to get the machine to see the san disk as disk 0. I have the lun (which resides on an vnx5600) as lun 0. The boot policy is configured to have the san lun as lun 0. It even appears while booting the san lun appears as lun 0. The error I'm getting from the windows installer is: We couldn't install Windows in the location you chose. Please check your media drive. Here's more info about what happened: 0x80300001. Any suggestions to get this to boot from SAN.

connect adapter (x/x/x). <--- (chassis #/slot #/adapter#)
connect
attach-fls
lunlist

Every time after shutting down my 24" iMac, it will end up with a corrupted HD which cannot be fixed by disk utility and require to reformat the HD and restore.

I have to ask; Are you using the Shut Down... menu item in the "apple" menu to shut down? Does it shut down normally when you do?

• K7N2 Delta2-LSR - SATA disk does not boot with IDE disk connected

I have K7N2 Delta2-LSR with SATA 160GB drive and CD burner connected as primary master.
When I'm connecting any IDE hard disk, the mainboard detects it corectly, but I'm not able to boot from SATA drive.
I tried to turn off IDE drive detection in BIOS (set [None] instead of [Auto]) and SATA boots!!! And Windows XP and Linux can see both disks!!!
Is it a BUG in BIOS?
Maciek
K7N2 Delta2-LSR (with latest BIOS Sep 18, 2004)
Athlon XP (Barton) 2800+
SATA drive WD 160GB
GF4MX440
FSB333, DDRAM 512MB/400
PSU 350W, works stable with 2 HDs and CDRW.

Strange my board boots fine from SATA with a PATA HDD connected. XP and Linux will see any disks connected to the motherboard and powered up in your system even if disabled in the bios apart from those connected to a separate raid controller which should be enabled. Both these operating systems address the hardware directly once their drivers are loaded so will ignore the settings you have in the bios. This behaviour is normal and not a bios bug. The main boot disk has of course to be enabled in the bios for the boot loader to operate. The boot priority with the new south bridge is PATA first followed by SATA and XP uses this too. To ensure that XP boots from SATA properly the PATA drive must be disconnected during the install process. You also need to ensure that the SATA disk is the only active partition connected to your system. If the PATA disk has been used to boot an operating system previously there may still be an active partition present on the drive. If that is the case removing the active partition should cure the problem but if the present arrangement works for you then fine.

• Dual G4 Won't start up with ethernet internet connection plugged in

Hi,
My Dual 533mhz won't start up when the ethernet cord is pluged in. This recently started happening out of the blue (at least, I can't recall doing anything that might cause this). When I leave the ethernet cord in, the computer starts up with a network disk icon flashing and never goes away. When I don't have the ethernet cord plugged in, the computer still blinks with the network disk, but eventually changes to an OS 9 question mark folder, where it blinks some more and finally boots up normally.
The ethernet cord is one from a router.

Open the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences, select your hard disk as the startup disk, and quit System Preferences.

• S20 Won't boot to windows with network cable connected

S20-4157, Windows 7 x64
Every time I reboot my machine, I have to unplug the network cable. I can plug it back in after I log in. If I don't, it gets stuck on the windows startup screen.
I think this is related to the lenovo power manager. I get the following event log error on boot:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
TPPWRIF
When I go to control panel, and start the power manager app, it does not start. Locked up with splash screen. I tried uninstalling the program as well, and cannot. Get an "unable to run on this system" message when I try to uninstall.

That's odd to say the least. DId this app come installed from the factory? I'm not sure why a thinkpad power manager utility would be included in our preloads. The fact that you're not able to uninstall it sort of concerns me. Have you tried uninstalling via safemode or when logged in as administrator?

• Start up with external Drive connected and switched on

When starting up with my external USB2 drive connected, it takes ages, I usually resort to switching it off and then back on when my Mac has started. Has anyone got any tips on how to speed up the start up process?
Cheers

Sounds like it may well be the photos (or more likely any video in iphoto) rather than the drive that is causing the issues.
Have you installed all the updates for imovie including the ilife compatibility update.

• 648 max, wont boot to cd with locked HDD connected

hi i hope you can help me, i bought my son a cheap second hand PC from a car boot sale, inside which is an MSI 648 max motherboard,
the problem i have is i am trying to attach a larger hard drive which is locked, usually to unlock the HDD i run a bootable cd-rom which is fine however when i try to boot the computer i get a message stating the hard drive is locked and i have 5 attempts to enter the password.
unfortunately i do not know the password as it is encrypted on the cd-rom, if only i could boot to cd-rom this wouldn't be a problem however i can not boot to cd-rom with the locked hard drive connected and obviously i cannot connect the hard drive after its booted to cd as it will not be detected,
when i try to access the boot menu i hit F11 as stated but all i get on the POST screen is "GO-->boot menu and then it hangs on the POST screen, what does this mean?
so my question is, is it possible to boot to CD with the locked HDD connected as im getting quite frustrated,
i hope i have given enough information but if you need anymore i shall happily provide
many thanks
Glenn

If the hard drive is still servicable you can use a bootable cd or floppy to erase the contents of the hard drive.
The ultimate boot cd has numerous apps to erase hdds. http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
Or just get another hard drive.
Could be something else wrong of course. At least the UBCD is free.
