Imac slow starting

My iMac 27" become slower when starting. Please tell me how to improve.
Thanks

Firstly, how much slower are you talking about? A few seconds; a few minutes? Arduously long?
Next, you should realize that for Mavericks to work at its best, it loads as much into the memory cache before you get up and running so that when you are operating your applications you are that much more efficient. Also, if you are using the restore from previous state features, that will take longer than just starting up clean with no applications launching.
If something more than that seems to be happening, you should give many more details for others to be able to help you troubleshoot.

  • IMac 27 slow start and KPs

    Hi friends,
I've got a 27 inches iMac from January 2010. In last month i'm experiencing very slow starts in first white screen. The start takes about 2 or 3 minutes.
Then, in desktop, all is OK. I work very good with all programs and games. I'm not experiencing any problem with videocard, memory, hard-disk, or somthing.
Two or three times I try to Shut down the iMac, OSX put a screen making me to shut down holding down the bottom to start/stop for a few seconds and restarting the system. Then, the iMac show me this KP:

    Things I've done:
    - Try to repair users and disk permissions with Onyx.
    - Try to unplug all USB devices plugged in back USB (ex. AverTV or Printer)
    - I've updated the OSX to 10.6.7
    Things I suspect:
    - In desktop the mouse or keyboard doesn't work until I press some buttons. (Maybe Bluetooth problem?)
    - Two months ago I've got a problem with Espionage Software, making some folders invisibles with encryptation, deleting the app, reinstalling and some folders encryped maybe causing problems?
    - I can't restart with 'D' pressed for a Hardware Test (Maybe same Bluetooth problem?)
    - Maybe I may to move the RAM between sockets?
Could someone guide me for what can I do?
    Thanks!

Most likely, com.avermedia.driver.A815(1.1.10)@0x5f83d000->0x5f85dfff is the culprit. Additionally, these also have to be looked into:

  • Slow iMac on start up etrecheck finds problems

After 5 yrs of use my 2009 iMac hard drive crashed. Repaired by an Apple Approved Repair Centre (1TB WD HD) only one month ago.
I am already suffering slow start up on Safari.
Found EtreCheck Software through Apple Forums and it found some malware, which I got rid of by the recommended download of Adware medic.
However, on start up this morning it was slow on start up of Safari again, and a run of EtreCheck showed that it had killed several start up files under Start Up Items, Problem System Launch Agents and Problem System Launch Daemons!
What are these things and what is happening to my computer.
If I cannot resolve obviously I will have to take it back to KRCS in Derby
    Thank you inanticipation

My iMac g5 starts up , responds slow, freezes after approx. 2 minutes, then upper fan starts running high and loud. Any ideas on what could be wrong? Worth fixing?

Could be over-heating. Try cleaning out the air vents.

  • My iMac suddenly started running slow. almost every action invokes the color wheel

my imac suddenly started acting very choppy.  streaming internet music works normal. every action requires a delayed response. sometimes 30 sec before it starts the command. i have not downloaded any programs in months. my imac is running OS x 10.8.2 with 4GB ram.my HDD has 65Gb free space. ext HDD has 248GB free space. i do not use any virus programs.

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

First, removing "iAntiVirus" will have no effect if you're running Yosemite, because it doesn't load in Yosemite.
Back up all data immediately if you haven't already done so. You should have done that before doing anything else.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Slow start up / "ghost programs"

I had some trouble with my harddisk when it filled up and became slow, so I made a clean install and copied back my things from Time Machine. But, and this problem happened before that too, my iMac takes forever to startup (about 5 minutes).
And every now and then a program (mostly iTunes) will become non-responsive, but apparently shuts down in a normal fashion when I close it. But the symbol in the dock will say it's still running, and in a mystical way... it is. Because force shut down doesn't work, neither with any program or a restart of the finder, and the only thing working is to do a cold restart of the machine. Interestingly, the activity monitor doesn't find the programs that hangs either, even if they are running.
    I don't understand a thing right now...

    1. Check your Startup Disk. Go to System Preferences/Startup Disk and make sure that your Mac OS X system drive/folder is selected as your startup disk. Otherwise the system could take longer searching for it every time you boot.
    CHECK
    2. Repair Permissions. Open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select your hard drive on the left and under the First Aid tab click Repair Disk Permissions.
    CHECK
    3. Verify Disk. While you are in Disk Utility after you Repair the Permissions click Verify Disk. This will check the integrity of your volume directory. If there are any errors that need to be addressed you will have to boot up to your install disk in order to run Repair Disk.
    CHECK
    4. Check your login items list. Go to System Preferences/Accounts/Login items. If there are any Applications there that should not be simply remove it from the list.
    CHECK
    5. Disconnect any external devices for testing purposes. External hard drives, ipods, scanners, printers, have been known at times to cause startup/shutdown issues.
    NOT DONE YET
I've bought a new 1 TB MyBook today so I can remove a Maxtor-disk I have who's been difficult to read from (it doesn't always appear in the Finder), so I'm moving my music and different stuff right now and I'll have to wait some time to do a startup without external disks. In addition I have a 500 GB LaCie with two partions (250 on each, one for Time Machine) who seems to work fine.
It's the actual start up which is the problem, not the login process.
I can live with the slow start up for now, but my main problem is when iTunes and Xtorrent freezes and starts acting like a ghost. Any ideas there? It just happened with Xtorrent again now. It's shut down, but the dock indicates that it's still running...

  • Slow start up and printer connection

Hi, I have a iMac 10.6.8 which froze up a few weeks ago, so I had to turn the whole thing off without shutting down.  Ever since that happened, it is really slow starting up and really slow sending information to the printer.  It is connected with the normal printer cable and has always been very quick before the computer froze up.  Now it takes 2-3 minutes of the rainbow spinning circle to get anything to print, even just a simple word document!  Any clues on what may have happened and how to fix it?
    Thanks.

First backup immediately, it is possible you have a damaged or failing HD. Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode and if  it reports errors either Google them or post them. If the disk suffered some minor damaged it may be able to be repaired using Disk Utility however you will need to run DU from the original OS X Install Discs that came with the computer, a Snow Leopard upgrade DVD or if you use a Bootable Clone as a Backup you can boot from it and run DU from the Clone.

  • B210a is very slow started to print wirelessly

I recently purchased a B210a which I'm using wirelessly from my Apple iPhone, iPad, and a Mac. It takes over a minute to start printing from any of these devices. I've now connected a cable from my iMac and it is still very slow starting. Any suggestions?

Tell me about your network - router brand/model, encryption type (WEP, WPA, etc) and ISP type (DSL, Cable, etc).
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Did a clean install but still find imac slows significantly as the day goes on. first projects go pretty well. later

did a clean install but still find the imac slows as the hours pass. using photoshop cs5 and lightroom3,
working w/some large files, but previously-like months ago, there was not this slowing problem. even
the internet slows later in the day. and small moves in a program start to take forever. anyone experience this
issue? or have any thoughts on it? thank you

How much free space do you have on your drive?
From the sounds of your problem is sounds like you are approaching a full disk.

  • Help upgrades made my imac slower?????

i Just upgraded my Imac 17 incher g5 no isight to a new sata seagate 250 gb hard drive and also upgraded the ram to 2 gb
the question is is when waking up the system from sleep it takes a good 30 to 40 sec before i can start working??
    what did i do wrong?
the sata is an off the shelf what about the spred spectrum stuff?
    thanks in advance

"the sata is an off the shelf what about the spred spectrum stuff?"
Assuming your Seagate is a Barracuda model, that is only a potential issue if the model number is 7200.9, as the older models Barracuda 7200.8 or 7200.7 did not have that feature included. If it is a 7200.9 it probably wouldn't work at all, unless the feature was turned off by the seller (some will do that for you).
    "what did i do wrong?"
By installing two upgrades at the same time, you now have no easy way to determine whether your issue is being caused by the new hard drive or by the new memory. I recommend first returning memory to its original configuration (although you might run through the following and achieve resolution of your issue leaving things just the way they are now).
If you continue to get a slow start from sleep, open Disk Utility in your Applications>Utilities folder. Select the entire hard drive, the "First Aid" panel, and click the "Repair Disk Permissions" button. Allow it to run to completion, when you should see "Permissions repair complete" in bold.
Then boot from your Tiger install disc and after the language selection screen, at the top of the second screen will be several pull-downs. Select "Disk Utility" from the Utilities pull-down. Again select the entire hard drive, the First Aid panel, and click on the "Repair Disk" button. Allow it to run to completion, when you should see "No repairs necessary" - rerun until this is the report. In the area below the "Repair" buttons you will see one line is the "S.M.A.R.T. Status:" which should be followed by "Verified" - any other notation would be a warning.
If the slow start issue persists, do a PRAM reset. Also run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test, which is found on the original set of grey-label discs that came with the iMac. Pay attention to any specific notation, write down the code and report it to Apple or a repair center.
If after performing all four of the above it is still slow, you might want to set up a temporary "user" at System Preferences>System>Accounts and log in that way to see if the issue exists in that configuration. If not, then obviously you have a setting somewhere in your usual user configuration that needs adjusting.
Once the slow start issue is resolved with the hard drive, install the new RAM one stick at a time and if the issue re-occurs, use the same steps to resolve the issue with your new RAM. Incompatible RAM is not particularly unusual, and most sellers will replace it. Good luck.

  • Anyone else experiencing slow starts, slow app loads, stuck app on different monitors?

I waited 4 months to upgrade my iMac 3.4 GHz i7 (late 2012) 32 GB DDR3 (so, no this isn't a memory issue) hoping the bugs would be worked out on the Mavericks OS, but no such luck.
Although there are a handful of enjoyable changes, the most noticable change is a step backwards in speed at start-up. Coupled with very slow app launches (despite recommended upgrades to those as well), the new system seems plagued with minor glitches:
    1. Very slow start up and shut down.
    2. Slow app launch - sometime the app is "open" but with windows are not responsive.
    3. Random email account drops. One minute there's a warning, the next it's fine. But only one of mulitiple email accounts from the same third party.
    4. The removal of iChat theater from iMessages.
    5. Etc...
Anyone else having similar issues? Any idea of settings that may be adding to #1 and #2 (the priority issues)?
    Apple?
30 years a loyalists and I'm saddened by the recent slew of issues accross all things Apple: iMac, OS, iPhone 5...

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • 5min Slow Start Up Help!

I have a 17” Intel Imac 2.0 which I upgraded to Leopard. I have been having some real slow start up times lately, which take at least 5 mins. It will just stay on the blue start up screen forever and then will finally go to my desktop. I haven’t really noticed any issues when it finally gets up as far as performance. I have called apple and they had me try several different start up options. They then finally had me a do a archive and restore of Leopard. This took and hour or so to do so Apple support was closed when it was done. This did not fix the problem and is still having same issure. The rep said if this didn’t work to call back and it could be a ram issue. It does look like the computer is recognizing the ram under utilities. Any help would be great.
    Thanks

    Any USB devices plugged in?
Go to System Preferences > Accounts and see what is in Startup Items?
Might be trying to join some network?
Might be trying to connect to .Mac, or other server?
