  • After 10.8.4, iMac is pretty unusable. Ideas?!

Hi, I updated my iMac using the combo pack to 10.8.4 as the update via the App Store wouldn't work, despite reboots...however, now the iMac is pretty unusable as it is so slow to respond. The dock 'shudders' into view, and icons for iMovie, iPhoto and some others are non-existent (they are still in the dock, but it's just the icon of a piece of paper, a ruler and some pens.)
Extremely frustrated that it seems to have killed my machine...help required!

Try booting into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and check to see if the iMac runs any quicker and those apps work.
Drag those icons out of the Dock and go to the Applications, locate those apps and drag them back to the Dock. If the apps have the same icon as they had in the Dock you may have to restore them from your backup.

I have Soundtrack Pro 1.1 It opens OK but the everything takes 4 or so seconds to work. It's very slow and unusable in its present state. Is this a well known problem?

STP 3.0.1 was the version designed to work with OSX 10.6.8. Anything earlier than that and issues may arrise. Hard to tell what yours are.
You may want to run Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager to reset the prefs back to the default state. If nothing else, it is a good troubleshooting step.
    Good luck.

  • HT1750 My iMac slowed down, then word and PowerPoint wouldn't work, then I tried to switch users and shut it down with the button on the left back and now the whole screen is white and it is frozen and dead. Please help!

iMac slowed down, PowerPoint and word wouldn't work, I tried to switch users then shut it down and now it is frozen with a white screen. Help please!

From the way you are describing it, it sounds like the HD has failed. Please look over Gray screen appears during startup for troubleshooting steps. You can also run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, it may take 2-3 passes for any error codes to appear and each pass takes approximately 30-60 minutes. However either way you should plan on taking it into an Apple Store or AASP for service.

  • I Fixed my iMac slow internet connection

I will share with you how I fixed my iMac slow internet connection and frequently lost connection.  At first, I thought it was the Airport but then it wasn't the case.  I also had a Dell laptop in the same basement and it was running as fast as I expected.  Here are the steps:
1/ Open Airport link on the top right window  > Open Network Preferences
    2/
Click + to create new Network Name and Security, I chose WPA personal - less security than the WPA2- that is why it runs faster.
3/ Go mack to step 1 and select your new network name > Apply.
May iMac is now connecting to internet as fast as I would expected.
    Good luck

My iMac internet connection is not faster but as fast as it used to be.  I was using WPA2 and it was really good for a year and then I got disconnected or very slow.  So I created the new network bearing the same old name but use WPA and did not delete the old one, some how everything is back to normal.

In addition to abrody's questions, have you downloaded non-Apple software that may be automatically loading, and perhaps not Lion-compatible? Go to System Preferences, users, and look at login items under your user ID.  This is easy to check ... do a safe boot by holding the shift key down when you boot. The boot itself may take longer than normal, but once the boot finishes, if the performance is what you'd consider normal, look to your login items. Also, while looking at System Preferences, look at any programs noted at the bottom of the window.

  • Did a clean install but still find imac slows significantly as the day goes on. first projects go pretty well. later

did a clean install but still find the imac slows as the hours pass. using photoshop cs5 and lightroom3,
working w/some large files, but previously-like months ago, there was not this slowing problem. even
the internet slows later in the day. and small moves in a program start to take forever. anyone experience this

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    If using Wifi/Airport...
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    Click OK.

  • Have the following iMac at home and am contemplating adding a MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule for backup/storage and increased WiFi speeds.  My question is this (1) a compatible setup, and (2) will my older iMac slow down the WiFi speeds?   Man

Have an older iMac and am contemplating adding a new MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule to increase WiFi speeds. My question is (a) is this a compatable setup and (b) will the older iMac slow the WiFi speeds?
    Thanks

Be careful about mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's disk.  That will cause conflicts, sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

  • Imac slows dow to almost a totatal stop

My iMac slows down working 48 hours without restart to almost non responsive. I can not even quit the open applications unless I force quit. After restart everything goes back to normal. I don't have to many applications open when I work, that's why its really confusing, why this is happening.

    I would suspect 3 things.
    You are low on RAM
Your Hard Drive is low on space
Your Hard Drive is in the early stages of failing
For the first two go to Applications > Utility > Activity Monitor, now check both System Memory and Disk Usage. > http://mac.appstorm.net/how-to/os-x/making-the-most-of-activity-monitor/
For the last one, run the Extended Apple Hardware Test > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

In addition check your Energy Saver Preferences and make sure that your Display Sleep and Computer Sleep timers are properly set to get the expected results.
For example: I want my Display to sleep after 5 min and my Computer to Never Sleep so that I can choose when to sleep it from the Apple dropdown menu.

  • IMac Slowed terribly

    I have a 2 year old+ iMac with OS x   10.6.7
Until very recently, desktop ran fine with no real issues.
Over the past month or so, started to slow dow considerably.  I saw alot of programs seemed to be "open" still so quit those but CPu memory was still hitting 55 to 60% not doing anything.
I have a bunch of photos but still a ton of free available....this is a dual core intel
I don't know what steps to troubleshoot to get this pup going better as it was unusable a few days ago and now is just about usable...
The only major change I made was making this wireless to a printer (networked printer in house) with another computer wireless to it...
Mozy runs for backup....but most of everything is already backed up.
    Any troubleshooting suggestions?
    thanks in advance

Have you tried vacuuming the machine, it sounds as if it might be overheating. If it's not the iSight, open the case and vacuum the fans as well as the air vents.

  • Toubleshooting iMac Slow Boot/Slow Safe Boot Issues

I have a 24-inch iMac 2.8GHz. Several months ago I was having issues with very slow bootup and slow response times in operation. For example, I would click the Apple Menu icon, the wheels would spin, and take up to a minute to load the icon. In addition the computer seemed to be running hot. I installed a temp monitor, and the temperature never got above 108F.
I reformatted the harddrive and installed Snow Leopard, and everything was great. Until now…the problem is back. My main complaint is the 5+ minutes it takes to boot up. It hangs for a while on the gray screen with the spinning gear and hard drive is silent. After a while, I'll hear some churning, then the blue screen appears, then it will be silent, and eventually the desktop will appear. Icons graphics are lagged, but once booted, performance is ok. I removed all startup items that were in the Accounts preferences and there were no startup items in the startup folder.
I've tried booting into Safe Mode, and it hangs on the status bar about 1/4 of the way in. I have been able to successfully boot from DVD. I ran Disk Utility and repaired the HD and permissions and there were no problems. I also ran the hardware test from the DVD and everything tested ok. I also booted into Verbose Mode and it hung several times. The last time it hung before I abandoned verbose mode it said: disk0s2: I/O error. It hung there for around 5 minutes and I eventually just forced shutdown.
It is eventually booting...but there is clearly an issue. My question is…what’s the next step from here? I’m leaning towards a bad HD sector, but unsure what the right method for diagnosis (short of bringing it into the Apple Store, which I would like to avoid).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Your welcome and yes that error confirmed the HD is failing. While Time Machine is a good start, I would strongly recommend getting a second HD and creating a bootable clone of your internal HD. It's wise to have redundant backup's in the event one fails, I've had this happen myself! MacWorld writes articles about having redundant backups all the time. Here are links to two:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/157414/2011/02/mybackupplanlex.html
    http://www.macworld.com/article/156643/2011/01/howi_back_up_frakes.html?lsrc=top1
After you have done so then it's time to take your iMac into an AASP or Apple Store to have the HD replaced. Please get it done quickly as it's going to fail and they have a nasty habit of failing when you have something important to do.
Best of luck and let us know how it turns out.
