IMac - Slowing Down After A Few Hours

After restart, the system is quick.
After a few hours, User Switching and Application launching is very slow.
Lots of spinning red wait time.
Cannot see any process names taking up CPU cycles.
Not sure about the memory situation. 3 hours after restart I'm seeing:
Wired 87
Active 277
Inactive 138
Used 501
Free 16
VM Size 7.6G
Page In 125446
Page Out 60662
Any ideas how to chase this problem?
iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   512K, 2G Dual Core

Number one is memory. I can tell you that the new Intel systems absolutely love memory, and judging by your pageouts you're way under what it needs. I've installed 2gb in mine, and on numerous occasions I've checked my Activity Monitor and it's been using nearly 1gb. I'd recommend upgrading the memory asap.
Number 2 is programs. How many are you trying to use at once? 512 won't support many. I don't mean to sound like I'm insulting you or anything... not sure if you've been using Mac long or not... but are you closing out programs after using them or just closing the windows?

  • Dv5t-1000 CTO Sound sputters and OS slows down after a few hours

    I am running Vista 32bit SP1 on a DV5T-1000 CTO machine, 4gb ram 2.0ghz c2d
I've noticed that after a few hours of use, usually after I leave the machine on alone and coming back to it, the sound completely degrades and the OS response completely slows down to a crawl. It is especially prominent if I go to something like youtube and watch a video. the whole thing sputters and stutters and sounds horrible and the os slows to a crawl.
however, if I pause the video, until it's fully loaded, THEN play it, all is well, and my OS goes back to full speed...
but the longer I leave my PC on the WORSE it gets. if I leave it overnight, and come back in the morning, the result is horrible. I have an audio alert to notify me if I have email. normally it just does a quick 'beeep-booop, taking about a quarter of a second' as it flashes the message in the corner. If i leave the machine on over night, the next morning the message will go 'b-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-p-p-p-p-p-p b-b-b-b-o-o-o-o-o-o-p-p-p-p-' and takes about 5 seconds to complete the notification!
At this point, if I try to restart the computer, or shut it down from the start menu, it does nothing. I go to start select restart, nothing. I go to start, select shutdown, nothing. I have to physically hold down the power button and kill the computer!
I've updated to all the latest drivers for all my components straight of the h-p site. I even tried upgrading my nvidia drivers to the latest from nvidia.com. that didn't work so I reverted back to the h-p ones (from LAST YEAR by the way, can we get an UPDATE!)
so please, tell me WHAT GIVES! In addition to using my computer for daily activities, I also produce music on it. And if I use my pc for more than 2 hours, and I want to work on music, I have to reboot or suffer as my computer completely locks up.
PS. this thing says I cant make a word using the letters h and p... is this a JOKE?!?!?!?!?!?!

sorry about my tone, I don't realize how I sound when I'm typing, though I do think it's ridiculous that a forum about h-p doesn't allow you SAY h-p
anyway, I'm still at a loss for what to do, and it just occured to me that this may not be the place to get official help. are there h-p people here? or should I be contacting support? I have a feeling all they're going to tell me is to update the drivers...

  • Mac book pro mid 2009 shuts down after a few hour then will only boot after waiting and pressing power button numerous times. I am running mountain lion with most recent updates.

Mac book pro mid 2009 shuts down after a few hour of use and then is very difficult to reboot. Sometimes I have to wait hours, sometimes I have to repeatedly press the power button and then it will slowly start a little longer each press untill it completely boots. It has done this three times know.  Each time I was watching a video.

Try running the Apple Hardware Test - sounds as if you've hardware issues.

  • Imac slowing down after installing citrix and Office

    Hi
I have noticed a slight slowing down in the responsive of my imac (surfing net / carrying out tasks).
I have plenty of storage space and the only changes made recently are installing Citrix and MS office.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
    Many thanks
    Paul

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

  • Zen Xtra shuts down after a few hours, loses pl

Before I updated my Nomad Zen Xtra to the 2.0.03 code, I could go up to 24 hours without it going into shutdown mode (ie. I could turn it on, and it was still on, at the same place I left off at). Now, it seems like I walk away from it for a few hours, and when I come back, it starts up like it was just first powered on, and I always lose my place. I use this thing primarily for audio books, and it sucks to lose your place when you're 3 hours into a file. The only way it doesn't lose the spot is if it's plugged into the AC adapter.
Is there any way to fix this, or change this? That is, aside from having to bookmark my spot every time I stop using the thing? That's annoying.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Frank

    please help!
i've tried the method in the other topic with the guy/gal who was having the same problems as me and it didn't work.

  • Fix for slow response after a few hours of idle

Recently my 10.6 10.75 iMac began running ultraslow after sitting idle for an hour or two. If I am very patient I am allowed to close apps and shut down. Them I wait for the startup to complete and slowly shut down without opoening anything several times. Evenutally the response speed returns to something like normal.
Definitely seems to happen after sitting idle. I was using a mosaic screen blanker and have now switched to one of the less intensive screen savers.
    Any suggestions appreciated.

  • Imac slows down after installing os/x lion

Since installing Lion on my iMac a couple of weeks ago, everything on my computer seems to be running slower. It's not unusual to sit and watch the spinning rainbow wheel for 5 minutes at a time, waiting for something to happen. This rarely happened before the the new OS. Even within applications like Safari, Mail and other apps, things do not act like they used to. I find myself having to click on action buttons 2 or 3 times before I get a response. For example, sorting my mail from "by date" to "by contact" rarely works without having to go to the main menu. I backed up my hard drive before the install, so I could revert back, but I hate to go backwards. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be causing this? Anyone know how to fix it?

    Try this:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Why does my data logging program slow down after a while?

A data logging program created with Labview 5.1. Slows down after a few weeks and creates files in the Temp. directory.Computer is Siemens Scenic pro 124 MB ram and AT-MIO-16XE50 Data acquisition board. Also using Solartron Dig. probes and Fieldpoint units.

Any chance that you are using Win 95/88/ME? Those OS's have well documented
memory leaks which will consume all your available memory if an application
is run long enough. Also there are some issues of memory management within
LabView in the allocation of memory.
The solution to the first is to switch to WinNT/2K. The second will be much
    more difficult.

  • Premiere Pro begins dropping frames after a few hours of editing

Is anyone else experiencing this?  I'm running Premiere CC on a new iMac 27inch and after a few hours of editing both the source monitor and record monitor begin dropping frames at a pretty high rate. The only way I have found to fix this is to shutdown the computer. But in a few hours, I'm back to dealing with dropped frames. My iMac is tricked out with I7 processor, 32 gigs of ram, and an nvidia graphics card with 2 gigs of ram.  I am editing with raw files from a Canon 5D, but the edits are pretty straightforward, nothing too complex. Does anyone know a fix for this?

  • Slow flash animations after a few hours playing

Hi, i have recently developed a standalone Flash entertainment system, containing Flash games and screensavers etc., i have also included a third party mp3 player.
The problem i have is the PC is left switched on daily and the system is used quite heavily, i.e mp3's playing in background while screen savers are displayed and games are played.
Everything starts fine but after a few hours the flash animations slow down to about 2 or 3 frames per second, then the PC will finally crash.
    What may be causing this?

Flash isn`t exactly a Pro when it comes to garbage collection. So a running application will constantly feed on your systems memory (it always goes up, never down). Best way to avoid these problems is, to make a task that every 2-3 hours closes tha application and restarts it. There is really nothing you can do about it codewise.

  • Windows 8.1 gradually slows down after hours. Speed returns normal if restart "explorer.exe".

I have Windows 8.1 Pro (x64) installed on Alienware M17x. The slowdown mostly appears as slow response in the situation such as open a folder/window, open/close/switch tabs in IE, drag window, and there's also cursor lag. It gradually
slows down after system boot, noticeable after 3-4 hours, really slow after 8-9 hours.
I have thought about many possible processes which can cause this issue, and then I found out that it's caused by "explorer.exe". If I kill "explorer.exe", the speed suddenly becomes normal. Then, I restart explorer.exe
again, it stays normal, and then it still gradually slows down again after hours.
I have checked driver or software compatibility. Also, CPU usage and Disk usage is normal.
Please give some advises, reasoning, or solutions.

    SaccoSVD
The process that is causing the problem is called sidebar.exe and I am curious why it is running on a win 8 machine as I dont believe it is built in. (It seems to have over 22,000 instances launched so I suspect either malware or a broken app)
It is usually associated with a Vista machine, or updated win 7 machine.  Did you do do a clean install?  Have you run a malwarebytes scan?
Please download the free version of Malwarebytes.
    Update it immediately.
    Do a full system scan

  • System Slow-Down After Printing

I recently installed Mountain Lion. Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed a significant operating system (10.8.2) slow down after printing with my Epson R3000 printer. This happens after every printing session. When I say slow-down I mean significant delays and dreading "beachballs" when opening applications, selecting menu items or anything else I should choose to do. I'm left with re-starting the computer to get going normally again. After re-atarting I have gone to "verify permissions" and I get approx "5" pages of permission errors, all associated with the printer library in some fashion or another. I then repair all those permissions and re-start my MacPro. The operating system then works as normal and I can use the computer with no problems (until I start printing again). I mainly use the computer for photo editing with Adobe Photoshop CS6, Adobe Lightroom 4 and Aperture 3.2.
I did not have this problem before upgrading to Mountain Lion (and then to 10.8.2). I did not get "significant" permission errors before upgrading. Since all printer drivers for this printer are handled now by Apple via the "new" Software Update process I can't even re-download the Epson printer driver and start over. I'm completely at a loss as to what, associated with the printer function, is causing these "significant" permission errors and subsequent operating system slow down. My printer is almost brand new and was working flawlessly before Mountain Lion. Let me be clear though, I can print fine. My problem is the system slow down after using the print function which I am only guessing has something to do with the "5" pages of permission errors after printting photos (with CS6/Lightroom/Aperture).
Incidently, I am not in any way a computer expert. Verifying and repairing permissions is about all I know how to do that's why I need help. I also just thought I would try the forums first before going to technical support to see what people thought about this.
Again, I repair the permission errors, re-start my system and all is fine. Any further suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

Still have a slow down after updating to 10.10.2
