HELP!!!!

No, OK lets check one more thing on the router. First routers have multiple channels, however most people NEVER change the channel their router is on. If you live in an area where there are lots of WI-FI networks that means you and neighbors could be competing for the same channel. You can download an app called iStumbler from macupdate.com and it will scan your neighborhood to see what channel you and your neighbors are on. If you find you are on the same channel as your neighbors (usually channels 5 or 6) then you can change the channel on your router. Again you'd have to call Verizon to get instructions.
After that change and if you still have the problem the next thing to do is change the DNS settings. This is easy to do and causes no harm. For instructions click DNS Settings Update.

  • New iMac slowing down entire network's internet

I recently purchased a new iMac (warning, I'm a PC user up until a few days ago), and have noticed that any time I have the iMac on (idle, having just started up) the internet for the other 2 computers on the networks drags terrible (long page load times, etc)
It's as if the new machine is hogging up all the bandwidth, while doing nothing.
I've experienced this problem in the past, when my younger brother was home from college & had his macbook. Any time he was on his macbook, the connection for the rest of the network would become unreliable. This was on a completely different network from the one I'm currently having a problem with.
Has anyone else run into this problem?
Being new to Macs, I'm not even sure where to start looking for the problem.
Any help/feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I'd start by going to System Preferences > Network click on Ethernet or Airport or both and be sure your setup is correct. There's an "Assist me" button in each.
EDIT: I'd also suggest you take a look atSwitch 101. There's a wealth of info there.

  • Will using the old express slow down my network?

I want to setup a network without being connected to the internet, with an Extreme N connected to an external drive, AppleTV, and Airport Express for music.
    1. If I use the old Express that is not running at N speed, will this significantly slow down my network?
    2. If I setup my network with the old one and later upgrade to the new one, is it a big deal to delete the old one off the network and add the new one?
    Thanks.

You can have an N network with a G subnetwork. You connect the WAN connector of the G router to a LAN port of the N router. You set the N router to work only at N, that is without support for G networks. Let the G router handle those.

  • HT1750 My iMac slowed down, then word and PowerPoint wouldn't work, then I tried to switch users and shut it down with the button on the left back and now the whole screen is white and it is frozen and dead. Please help!

iMac slowed down, PowerPoint and word wouldn't work, I tried to switch users then shut it down and now it is frozen with a white screen. Help please!

From the way you are describing it, it sounds like the HD has failed. Please look over Gray screen appears during startup for troubleshooting steps. You can also run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, it may take 2-3 passes for any error codes to appear and each pass takes approximately 30-60 minutes. However either way you should plan on taking it into an Apple Store or AASP for service.

  • IMac slows down wifi/LAN cable connection

    Hello,
I came across a quiet unique and annoying problem, that I have not seen being discussed so far.
I spend the last 3 weeks trying to solve my internet/wifi connection following all kinds of posts here.
Problem: Wifi/Lan internet connection is slow (less than 0.8mbit/s)
Problem only appears when I login with an iMac via wifi OR lag cable
    iMac, 2011 27`` Mac OS 10.7.5
    Background:
I have a 20mbit/s internet connection with my provider. works fine on iPad, iPhone, appleTV HTC one mini, etc… BUT as soon, as I login with my iMac, the internet connection slows down to less than 1 mbit/s
    I have tried following solutions:
    - live box (router) was exchanged and is brand new
    - security settings on router changes (wpa2 etc)
    - all channels on router tested from 1-13
    - keychain saved passwords for Wifi and router deleted, PRAM reset
    - renewed lease of connected devices (no IP conflict)
    - shut down wifi on iMac - connection with all devices great, as soon as i switch wifi on, all devices lose their high speed connection and go down to less than 1mbit/s
    - connected iMac via LAN cable: same problem, all speed is lost
    - iMac is not in the network - speed is great
    - connected iMac via time capsule wifi, same problem. connected iMac via netgear extender, same problem
also, if I open network preferences and start the "assist me" app and run diagnostics, all dots are green except the ISP and server, bit most of the time they switch to green immediately, but connection is still slow.
Reception bar is on "3", so signal strength is no problem, and I´d like to emphasize that this is also happening on LAN cable. and again, if the iMac is disconnected from wifi AND / OR LAN, all other devices work fine.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
    Thanks!

Although I have been on Mac OS for a while now, I have never had to troubleshoot faulty network in the mac itself.
OSX does apparently have a safe mode boot..
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Try that.. as that gives you the same thing as windows with all the extras left out, so you get a basic operating system only and you can see if the problem still exists.. if it does.. I would simply bite the bullet.. wipe the Mac.. reinstall the OS and then carefully reinstall your applications from original disks/downloads and move your operating files back .. but start a different user on the computer and copy back the min you need to get working again.
If the problem still happens even in safe mode boot then do a hardware test.. because it is possible something has actually failed at the hardware level.
    Using Apple Hardware Test

  • IMac slowing down

My 27" iMac, late 2009, Mountain Lion has 164 GB free space of 500 GB total, and has slowed down noticeably the past month. There are three additional HD's connected, could that be part of the problem? Photoshop operations are the most affected, I'd say, PS6 is installed. PS Bridge also. Thanks very much.

  • Why is my iMac slowing down? Have EtreCheck info. Could someone check?

Hi, I would love for someone to help me work out why my iMac is starting to slow down. Do I need to get more GB?
    Problem description:
iMac has started to slow down, a lot of applications taking a while to load and sometimes freezing, going from application to application there is a lag. Just wondered if there is a problem with the iMac or I just need to bump up the memory..

First, removing "iAntiVirus" will have no effect if you're running Yosemite, because it doesn't load in Yosemite.
Back up all data immediately if you haven't already done so. You should have done that before doing anything else.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Flash Player goes nuclear - takes down entire network

We have 10 Windows computers on a  small unmanaged gigabit network with a DD-WRT Linksys WRT-54GS router  and Dlink 2208 hubs, and were having problems with the network dieing,  and nobody able to reach the internet or other computers on the network.  It started happening suddenly.  There are additionally 3 VOIP lines on  this network too and they would be killed.
In  troubleshooting, I could see an enormous amount of activity coming from  one section of the network.  Disconnnecting this segment brought the  network back online and functioning correctly.  Further tracing based on  the flashing lights on the front of the hubs narrowed the problem to  one computer, a new Windows XP-64 bit computer.  When I brought up the  Local Area Connection Status in Windows, I could see an enormous number  of packets being sent.
Close to a million packets per second were being sent from this computer.
Adobe  Flash Player (ver 10,1,82,76) was taking a tremendous amount of CPU  time for an idle computer, and killing this in task manager resulted in  the network coming back alive immediately.
Is this a known problem with Adobe Flash going nuclear and killing an entire network?  I had this problem twice before and was never able to trace it to my satisfaction and now I wonder if this was what happened.
(was originally posted in Flash but I suppose I should have posted it here since it is a player problem)

Yes, sometimes Flash Player doesn't close down when Firefox is shut down.  I didn't find any gremlins on my computer during virus analysis, so can't comment on that.  I suppose I could find the problem site and SWF, but since I didn't develop it, my concern with Flash is that it can get into such a snit, that it can take down an entire network and not just a computer.
My concern is summarized this way.
    1. Was there something else on my computer that caused this problem. (virus etc)
    2. If it is Flash causing this problem, perhaps Steve Jobs concerns with Flash were legit??  (I see Apple has backed down)
    3. Grandma certainly wouldn't have been able to resolve this issue, and most computer users would have blamed their ISP since their internet was down.
    4. How is the average computer user to deal with the complexity that these new technologies sometimes dump on them?
    5. Are we headed to systems that are so complicated that these type of isses become more and more common?

  • New IMAC slowing down with spinning ball

I've had my MAC for about 3 weeks (I switched from a PC). Today it started slowing down. First whe n I tried to print something and then when I was in Excel (Office for MAC 2004). Both times it didn't do anything for a minute and then the clorful spinning ball thing appeared. About a minute later it finished what I was doing (saving a template file).
I looked at the system memory and I have 2GB of RAM with an OK status. I have two printers - one USB attached to my MAC and the other on another computer (Windows) that I am sharing. This was not a problem before, so I don't expect this to be the issue, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.
    I haven't bought virus software yet - perhaps I have a virus?
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Macs don't get viruses, so you can rule that out. Do you have any shared drives or network connections? Something there could be slowing things down. If you do have some connections, try disconnecting them and see if that speeds up your access. When was the last time you rebooted the machine? You could always try that.
There is a utility in applications\utilities called "Activity Monitor". You could look there to see if anything is hogging the memory or processor. Have you installed anything recently?

  • Imac slowing down after installing citrix and Office

    Hi
I have noticed a slight slowing down in the responsive of my imac (surfing net / carrying out tasks).
I have plenty of storage space and the only changes made recently are installing Citrix and MS office.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
    Many thanks

  • Excel slows down when network drive is mapped

Since a couple of months we are experiencing strange behaviour of excel (2011) on Lion 10.7.5
Excel versions from 14.3.1. to 14.3.4 all the same behaviour.
    Symptom 1)
When I connect the Time Capsule drive , Excel slows down by factor 100 when entering text. Needs up to 2 seconds to react on a key stroke.
When I disconnect the handle, excel works fast again.
    (repeatable, reproducible)
    Symptom 2)
on the network drive, always at the same place, a file named ~abcde.xls... occurs (exact name forgotten, but it is a recent file name
    preceded with a tilde sign)
deleting of the file does not affect speed
the file reappears occasionally (TC backup is switched off!)
    Where is the ghost??? :-D
    maybe these symptoms are uncorrelated.
Why the heck does Excel slow down when I open the network drive??
Why does this happen on 10.7.5 and not on 10.6.8?
    Anyone any idea?
    thanks,
    Stefan

Thanks. Away on holiday right now, but will do it as soon as I get back next week.
Out of curiosity, the external drive works fine when connected directly via USB to the laptop. I took that to mean that the problem wasn't to do with the drive, but probably the network. Is it possible there could be a problem with the drive which only shows up when it's used as a network drive?

We have a Hyper-V server (2008 R2 SP1) that is running several DC's.  These DC's are for different domains and establish outbound VPN connections using RRAS to sync with remote DC's.  We have a few of this with 20-30 DC's running on each Hyper-V
    server.
Application of SP1 to the host OS went without issue and everything remained normal.
Upgraded a single Hyper-V VM from 2008 R2 to 2008 R2 SP1 and everything connected to the physical switch went down.  Ping times went through the roof and timeouts were happening on the local physical network.  All Hyper-V guests on all
Hyper-V machines had CPU usage that went from about 0% up to averaging 5% to 7%.  The processing taking all the CPU was the LocalServiceNoNetwork one which is related to packet inspection.
Using the process of elimination, we found that if we stopped RRAS on the Hyper-V guest running 2008 R2 SP1 then everything went back to normal.  We duplicated the same scenario with a different machine...and again, just stopping RRAS fixed everything.
As soon as RRAS starts, the network crashes.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?  I plan on opening a case with PSS tomorrow but thought I'd ask.

PSS is useless.  They work on the ticket when convenient for their overseas hours and have no idea what is wrong.  They keep asking for the same information over and over.  We've decided to remove the RRAS component from our VM's.  Instead
we've decided to set up a VPN configuration where we use IPSec tunnels for each VM.  This allows us to remove all the RRAS roles and the issue goes away with SP1 applied.
There is definitely something wrong with SP1, RRAS and Hyper-V.  Maybe Microsoft can figure it out on their own time.  It is easier and simpler for us to just remove the component.
For historical reference, the issue seems to be that RRAS with SP1 picks up packets that are not destined for the RRAS tunnel and attempts to retransmit them.  This, in turn, saturates the switches with retransmit packets and takes down the entire network.
Microsoft has absolutely no clue on how to resolve the issue and the techs have so little knowledge in real networking troubleshooting that it is laughable.

  • Have the following iMac at home and am contemplating adding a MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule for backup/storage and increased WiFi speeds.  My question is this (1) a compatible setup, and (2) will my older iMac slow down the WiFi speeds?   Man

Have an older iMac and am contemplating adding a new MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule to increase WiFi speeds. My question is (a) is this a compatable setup and (b) will the older iMac slow the WiFi speeds?
    Thanks

Be careful about mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's disk.  That will cause conflicts, sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

  • Wired Mac on Airport Extreme slowing down Wireless network?

I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n and a MacBook Pro 15" (unibody). I recently added a MacMini Core 2 duo as an iTunes server, and since it didn't have 802.11n (it's an older one), I shut off the WiFi and ethernet cable'd it to my Airport Extreme. It works great; I can see the Mini in Shared devices from the MacBook Pro, share the screen, and my Apple TV syncs beautifully as well.
Then today I noticed that the internet connection on my laptop was really slow. After some chasing I realized that the same speed tests from http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ ran on the ethernet-Mini vs the WiFi-MacBook Pro were radically different. At any given time, the speed on the MacBook Pro was as low as 25% the speed on the Mini… sometimes even worse!
I discovered that if I shut down the Mini, the MacBook Pro speed increases. Not to the same point as the Mini, but I can attribute some loss to just being on WiFi and only getting about 60% signal strength (according to iStumbler -- even though the mac WiFi signal strength shows full bars… anyway). But in the past (before the Mini was added) I've run those speedtests and seen results like I'm seeing now only on the Mini.
So why would this tethered Mac be causing such a slowdown?
I'm about to upgrade to the new Time Capsule with separate 802.11 b/g and n antennas but would like to understand this problem before I make that upgrade. Something else feels wrong to me.
btw I did recently upgrade to the 7.4.1 firmware (at the same time I did the Mini addition… poor science, I know), and so I tried reverting it back to 7.3.2 to see if that made any difference, and it did not.

So I started poking around a bit more this morning, and ended up doing a slew of tests. A LOT of tests. I tested two different portables and the Mini, tested with the Mini off and on, and tested with Safari 3 or 4 (depending on what was on each system) and Firefox 3. I then tested the portable plugged directly into the wire.
I ran each test three times and averaged them.
There are some very interesting results.
Tests with Mini on vs. Min off makes a negligible difference on average on Safari. However Firefox performance consistently went down with the Mini off.
But here's the big shocker – performance of any wired computer was between three and TEN (!!!!) times that of the wireless! This is unbelievable.
Worth noting I was sure to disable all other wifi devices on the network, even the other portable, when performing the tests. Apple TV and iPhones were all powered down during these tests.
All my test results are visible here on iWork.com here: http://bit.ly/KYGTj (I think anyone can log in using an apple ID, if not then email me or post your email address here and I'll add you to the list)
