IMac slowing down

My 27" iMac, late 2009, Mountain Lion has 164 GB free space of 500 GB total, and has slowed down noticeably the past month. There are three additional HD's connected, could that be part of the problem? Photoshop operations are the most affected, I'd say, PS6 is installed. PS Bridge also. Thanks very much.

iMac slowed down, PowerPoint and word wouldn't work, I tried to switch users then shut it down and now it is frozen with a white screen. Help please!

From the way you are describing it, it sounds like the HD has failed. Please look over Gray screen appears during startup for troubleshooting steps. You can also run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, it may take 2-3 passes for any error codes to appear and each pass takes approximately 30-60 minutes. However either way you should plan on taking it into an Apple Store or AASP for service.

  • IMac slows down wifi/LAN cable connection

    Hello,
I came across a quiet unique and annoying problem, that I have not seen being discussed so far.
I spend the last 3 weeks trying to solve my internet/wifi connection following all kinds of posts here.
Problem: Wifi/Lan internet connection is slow (less than 0.8mbit/s)
Problem only appears when I login with an iMac via wifi OR lag cable
    iMac, 2011 27`` Mac OS 10.7.5
    Background:
I have a 20mbit/s internet connection with my provider. works fine on iPad, iPhone, appleTV HTC one mini, etc… BUT as soon, as I login with my iMac, the internet connection slows down to less than 1 mbit/s
    I have tried following solutions:
    - live box (router) was exchanged and is brand new
    - security settings on router changes (wpa2 etc)
    - all channels on router tested from 1-13
    - keychain saved passwords for Wifi and router deleted, PRAM reset
    - renewed lease of connected devices (no IP conflict)
    - shut down wifi on iMac - connection with all devices great, as soon as i switch wifi on, all devices lose their high speed connection and go down to less than 1mbit/s
    - connected iMac via LAN cable: same problem, all speed is lost
    - iMac is not in the network - speed is great
    - connected iMac via time capsule wifi, same problem. connected iMac via netgear extender, same problem
also, if I open network preferences and start the "assist me" app and run diagnostics, all dots are green except the ISP and server, bit most of the time they switch to green immediately, but connection is still slow.
Reception bar is on "3", so signal strength is no problem, and I´d like to emphasize that this is also happening on LAN cable. and again, if the iMac is disconnected from wifi AND / OR LAN, all other devices work fine.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
    Thanks!

Although I have been on Mac OS for a while now, I have never had to troubleshoot faulty network in the mac itself.
OSX does apparently have a safe mode boot..
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Try that.. as that gives you the same thing as windows with all the extras left out, so you get a basic operating system only and you can see if the problem still exists.. if it does.. I would simply bite the bullet.. wipe the Mac.. reinstall the OS and then carefully reinstall your applications from original disks/downloads and move your operating files back .. but start a different user on the computer and copy back the min you need to get working again.
If the problem still happens even in safe mode boot then do a hardware test.. because it is possible something has actually failed at the hardware level.
    Using Apple Hardware Test

  • Imac slowing down after installing citrix and Office

    Hi
I have noticed a slight slowing down in the responsive of my imac (surfing net / carrying out tasks).
I have plenty of storage space and the only changes made recently are installing Citrix and MS office.
    Does anybody have any suggestions?
    Many thanks
    Paul

  • New IMAC slowing down with spinning ball

I've had my MAC for about 3 weeks (I switched from a PC). Today it started slowing down. First whe n I tried to print something and then when I was in Excel (Office for MAC 2004). Both times it didn't do anything for a minute and then the clorful spinning ball thing appeared. About a minute later it finished what I was doing (saving a template file).
I looked at the system memory and I have 2GB of RAM with an OK status. I have two printers - one USB attached to my MAC and the other on another computer (Windows) that I am sharing. This was not a problem before, so I don't expect this to be the issue, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.
    I haven't bought virus software yet - perhaps I have a virus?
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Macs don't get viruses, so you can rule that out. Do you have any shared drives or network connections? Something there could be slowing things down. If you do have some connections, try disconnecting them and see if that speeds up your access. When was the last time you rebooted the machine? You could always try that.
There is a utility in applications\utilities called "Activity Monitor". You could look there to see if anything is hogging the memory or processor. Have you installed anything recently?

  • Have the following iMac at home and am contemplating adding a MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule for backup/storage and increased WiFi speeds.  My question is this (1) a compatible setup, and (2) will my older iMac slow down the WiFi speeds?   Man

Have an older iMac and am contemplating adding a new MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule to increase WiFi speeds. My question is (a) is this a compatable setup and (b) will the older iMac slow the WiFi speeds?
    Thanks

Be careful about mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's disk.  That will cause conflicts, sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

  • 2007 2.8 GHz iMac slowing down...

For the past week or so, my late 2007 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac has been getting slower and slower. It gets to the point where opening a simple menu bar item takes a full second, and opening a simple app like System Preferences can take five or ten seconds. The problem goes away after a restart, but then gradually returns over the course of a normal day's use. I've tried repairing permissions, I've tried repairing the disk after booting from my install DVD. I've used Activity Monitor, and nothing seems to be taxing the CPU or using up much RAM -- but still, every action seems to take far longer than it should. I'm running 10.6.2, and everything is fully up-to-date. My 1 terabyte hard drive isn't even half full.
    So, a few questions:
    1) A couple of months ago, I replaced my 4 gigs of Apple-provided RAM with two 3 gig sticks from Other World Computing. As this is the only way that I've modified my system, it strikes me as a possible cause. However, my problems have only been happening for a week or so... so I don't know. Also, as I said, Activity Monitor doesn't show any RAM-related bottlenecks.
    2) Barring that, is it possible that my system is just... getting old? It's on all the time, only requiring the occasional restart to install an update, but never (until now) for performance issues. Could a physical component just be wearing out?
    3) Before these problems started, I ordered a new Core i7 iMac, and it'll arrive soon. If I simply restore my new iMac from my existing Time Machine backup, what are the odds that these problems will follow me over? Presumably, if it's a hardware issue, that won't happen, but I don't really know if it is...
Anyway, that's all I can think of at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Your machine should not be slowing, if anything it should be faster than it was when new due to using SL 10.6.2. The first thing to check for is your new memory, if you have the old memory re-install it and see how the machine performs.
Next is to do a simple SMC and PRAM reset by:
    1. Turn off your iMac and unplug everything from it for 30 seconds.
    2. Plug in the power cord, keyboard and mouse only.
    3. Press the power button and immediately hold down the Option, Command, P & R keys until you hear the second gong then release the keys. Your machine will start up normally, then check for the issues you are having.
Let us know if this helps at all.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • Imac slows down after installing os/x lion

Since installing Lion on my iMac a couple of weeks ago, everything on my computer seems to be running slower. It's not unusual to sit and watch the spinning rainbow wheel for 5 minutes at a time, waiting for something to happen. This rarely happened before the the new OS. Even within applications like Safari, Mail and other apps, things do not act like they used to. I find myself having to click on action buttons 2 or 3 times before I get a response. For example, sorting my mail from "by date" to "by contact" rarely works without having to go to the main menu. I backed up my hard drive before the install, so I could revert back, but I hate to go backwards. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be causing this? Anyone know how to fix it?

    Try this:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Why is my iMac slowing down?

I've had my iMac for almost five years and it's been great, but for the last few months most of the apps have become very slow to open and operate. Seems like I get the SBOD almost every time I input a command. Are there steps I can take to clean up my hard drive/system and get back to a normal operation?

  • Please Help!! iMac slowing down so much it's getting crazy.

Okay so the problems started, maybe 3 or 4 weeks ago when I got an external hard drive for backup. After a while, I realized I didn't need it and unplugged it and turned off Time Machine. Ever since then, my 24" 3.06 GHz iMac has been really really slow. I do lots of video editing (FCE, After Effects), and I can understand if it's slow when I'm using it since I have only 2 GB RAM. But I am having these problems even when just Safari's open. I don't think it's the editing software, because I have had those on here weeks before I started using this HD. Is it the hard drive? I also do have, I think it's called iStats? But sometimes even with Safari open, it uses up almost all of my RAM. I also have nothing in my trash, and in my 500 GB internal hard drive, I take up 129 GB. I'm really ****** though because I can't seem to fix it. I also use GarageBand, and I decided to post this when after trying to record a song maybe 6 or 7 times, it once again stopped and came up with the "too many tracks played" window, when only two tracks were in the project. Can someone please help me?

    Hi Matt
    1. It could just be that you are just trying to run to many of those large App's at the same time on 2 GB of ram and your thrashing your HD.
Check the Activity Monitor > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342
Then either upgrade your ram or try closing FCE and After Effects while running Garageband and or vise-versa to see if that helps.
+(I can easily use 2GB of ram just running Leopard, Safari, iTunes, a fistful of widgets and doing some light iPhoto work.)+
    2. When was the last time you ran Repair Permissions, checked to see that the Maintenance Scripts had run or just did some general cleaning?

  • G4 iMac slowing down

I have a 1.25GHz G4 iMac, 768 MB memory & 80GB HD with 34GB available. performance is and always has been rock solid but recently I've noticed it's getting really slow opening applications eg Firefo, Word etc. I get the spinning beachball for 5-10 seconds before the app opens. Once it's open then everything is good and fast.
Clearly I need to do a bit of tweaking to get the performance back to what it should be but I don't know where to start.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated- thanks!

    Hi Richard,
1st repair permissions using disk utility.
load terminal up, found in app/utilities and enter the following line:
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
It will ask for your admin password.
then reboot, it will take 2-3 reboots before it starts to speed up again, but you don't have to keep restarting the machine this is just something you might notice.
This cleans out the cache manually that programs such as Onyx does for you. If you leave your iMac on all the time (no sleep) it will run these for you after midnight sometime as it is a Unix maintanace script.
    http://www.macattorney.com/ts.html
"OS X runs its own (very basic) built-in maintenance routines, sometimes called "cron jobs," or "maintenance scripts," automatically between 3:00am and 5:30am each day. (There are daily, weekly, and monthly scripts.)"
There is something else you can do which is called forced prebinding, this make OSX check the links to all the programs so it has the quickest route to them, have a look at the following page:
    http://www.chrisborkowski.com/archive/blogs/2005/07/force_prebindin.html
Also just search the web for OSX maintanance stuff the more you read the better your system will become.

  • IMac - Slowing Down After A Few Hours

After restart, the system is quick.
After a few hours, User Switching and Application launching is very slow.
Lots of spinning red wait time.
Cannot see any process names taking up CPU cycles.
Not sure about the memory situation. 3 hours after restart I'm seeing:
    Wired 87
    Active 277
    Inactive 138
    Used 501
    Free 16
    VM Size 7.6G
    Page In 125446
    Page Out 60662
Any ideas how to chase this problem?
iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   512K, 2G Dual Core

Number one is memory. I can tell you that the new Intel systems absolutely love memory, and judging by your pageouts you're way under what it needs. I've installed 2gb in mine, and on numerous occasions I've checked my Activity Monitor and it's been using nearly 1gb. I'd recommend upgrading the memory asap.
Number 2 is programs. How many are you trying to use at once? 512 won't support many. I don't mean to sound like I'm insulting you or anything... not sure if you've been using Mac long or not... but are you closing out programs after using them or just closing the windows?

  • IMac slowing down, not sure which application or process causing this

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Imac slowing down entire network internet

just hooked up a 2009 imac 21.5 intel to my home net work. now evry computer in the house nas a super slow internet connection including the imac when i disconnect the imac evything is fine i have adsl connection  the app on my iphone is showing between 12-15 without imac and barely 1 with it (download speed)
Even if i hard wire imac to modem same problem
    HELP!!!!

No, OK lets check one more thing on the router. First routers have multiple channels, however most people NEVER change the channel their router is on. If you live in an area where there are lots of WI-FI networks that means you and neighbors could be competing for the same channel. You can download an app called iStumbler from macupdate.com and it will scan your neighborhood to see what channel you and your neighbors are on. If you find you are on the same channel as your neighbors (usually channels 5 or 6) then you can change the channel on your router. Again you'd have to call Verizon to get instructions.
After that change and if you still have the problem the next thing to do is change the DNS settings. This is easy to do and causes no harm. For instructions click DNS Settings Update.
