IMac Software Update 1.3 does nothing to stop my imac freezing

I bought a new 24" Aluminium iMac when they came out not long ago. It's a great mac, but since I put Leopard on it it's been freezing up at random, giving me a black screen and all I can do is hold the power button down to turn it off. It doesn't really follow a pattern, but I suspect it is graphics driver related as it often does it when using stacks, changing screen savers or playing secondlife. I did an erase and install of leopard. The iMac software update 1.3 that just came out hasn't made any difference.

I am not sure why you felt the need to start a new thread on this subject as I believe you have participated in some of the other ones aleaeady discussing the issue. At this point, if the software updates have no helped you, then you probably should go ahead and call Apple.
It appears, from what I read that the software update does help some folks, but does not help others. It didn't help me. I can tell you only this. I know for a fact that the engineers are working very hard on this issue. I also know that this issue is important and I am certain that Apple wants to solve it.
But for you, call Apple and tell them what causes the freeze, what you have tried in order to rule out a software issue, if anything, and see about getting it fixed. I have faith that they will do the right thing. Apple is going to replace my motherboard and I hope that solves it for me, but I would be just as happy if the issue could be fixed with software and not an expensive and time consuming hardware repair.

Okay so I asked someone from apple and they said that the software update icon is gone but its functions have been merged with the app store icon on the settings menu. Crisis averted haha!

No, it just means that you are running Lion and do not have Java installed. The update will simply check for any previous infection and let you know if it finds anything. If it doesn't find anything it will quit without any notices. In either case, it will then delete itself and you can sleep easy until the next one comes along.

Safari quits, Software Update quits, Skype does not open, Meesenger too.

Downloaded latest Security update and Safari 3.1 plus latest Airport Extreme Firmware up date. All works well on my Powerbook (1.25) however its all gone funny on my wifes iMac (800).
1. Safari quits for no raeson.
2. Software Update tries to open but quits half way through.
3. Skype does not open at all.
4. Messenger does not open at all
Help, what is happening,does anybody know/can help.

Same is happening to me, most internet related applications won't start.
As far as I understand, this is related to the WebKit, which has been obviously changed in the latest Software update.
Having said that, I would also appreciate if anybody could give some help on how to restore a working WebKit.

I need to do a software update but it does not work

i tried to download some programs and they say they need updated versions of safari and java but when i went to download the java update it said to just use the software update. so i did but it keeps saying "Your software is up to date Software Update doesn’t have any new software for your computer at this time." does anyone know how i can up date this thing!?

Without knowing either what Mac you have, or which OS, I would guess that you have a PPC and cannot update either to 10.6 or 10.7, which is required to run those apps.

How to install (not update) the HP LaserJet 1020/1022 on Mountain Lion? The Apple Software Update doesn't show nothing.

I'm trying to install my HP LaserJet 1020 on my new Mountain Lion anyway I'm not able to find any driver! The HP says that I can update or install this printer using the Apple Software Update anyway I don't see any update or installation on it.
Does someone know a way to download a driver or find a solution for this problem? With previous version of the OS It was possible to download a .dmg for the HP LaserJet 1022 (the driver was the same for both versions, 1020 and 1022). I tried to download and install the driver for Snow Leopard anyway I don't see any entry when I try to select a driver for my printer during the installation phase (the list contain only two very generic drivers for HP printers).

Updates are only available if the software has already been installed.
HP is responsible for updating their drivers for Mountain Lion compatibility. Not Apple.
Doubtful the driver for Snow Leopard will run on Mountain Lion.

I FIXED IT!! I can't believe it . I actually figured out how to make it work(well sort of). My Apple Software Updater now works (almost) perfectly and I just successfully downloaded and installed itunes 10.6.3.25 through it!!!
Ok , the way I see it, either the latest itunes update or the recent Windows Patch Tuesday on June 12th, 2012 must have inadvertently removed the Administrative Rights from the Apple Software Update Tool .lnk file.
So you must go to where the file resides on your hard drive - for me that was C:\Program Data\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs - Right click on the Apple software Tool icon and choose properties. Click on the compatibility tab. At the bottom of this tab click on "change settings for all users" and hit Yes at the UAC pop-up. Now make sure you place a check in the "Run this program as Administrator" under the Privilege level section at the bottom. Hit Apply and then OK. The hit Ok again to get off the properties pop-up.
When I went back and clicked on the Apple Software Update shortcut, I got a UAC pop-up asking me if I wanted to proceed(something I had always, in the past, gotten but haven't since this problem started). The Apple Software Update tool came up and to my suprise the progress bar STAYED and started to slowly fill up partially with the green progress bar. Viola, the itunes 10.6.3 update showed up on the top part of the screen as a new update needing to be installed - the bottom screen, as usual, had the changelog info for the 10.6.3 update. I clicked on install and , again, Viola. the update downloaded and installed flawlessly. I had to reboot my computer and when it restarted, itunes was working perfectly and it was correctly showing as itunes v10.6.3.25.
I say it is almost or sort of fixed because when you click on the Apple Software Update shortcut after the 10.6.3 install it goes back to doing the same thing it did before(i.e. processing for a second and then saying there are new updates but showing a blank field). Maybe this is the way the software now looks if there are no updates available to install - maybe Apple is working on this to eventually get it back to normal. All I know is the process I outlined above worked for me(at least to get the ASU to recognize and properly download and install itunes 10.6.3). It's certainly not perfect, but it worked. Please try this method and let me know what results you have with it. Good luck.

My Safari won't update, Software Update says there's nothing to update but gmail does

According to my Mac all my applications are up to date. But when I go check my gmail it says safari is out of date and needs to be update, however my mac says that there is nothing to update. I have an older MacBook and I am not sure if that is the issue. I have "Mac OS X Version 10.6.8", its a MacBook, white body version. Any suggestions? It is not a big issue, Safari works for everything else except my gmail account now, but Mozilla works fine with it

You need to upgrade the computer's OS or switch browsers; if desired, you can keep using Gmail as is, but many of its functions will eventually disappear.

I would like to get a more current version of the IOS so that I can download games, etc. The instructions say to go to General and select Software Download. I do not have that option listed in my General area. Does anyone know how I should go about getting the more current IOS? Also, will the download hurt my IPAD. No. The Download is the operating system. It won't damage it because its released by Apple and signed to work on it.
It will update the Operating system to the newer version.

Do you mean you're having a problem trying to download the update, install the update, after the update is installed trying to re-activate the phone? I assume you're getting this message on your PC, not the phone...? Or are you having problems with Internet connectivity on the phone itself? WiFi or 3G?
If it's problems on the PC, try disabling all antivirus/firewall software and see if that takes care of it.

IMac unable to restart after downloading latest software update (including iTunes 11.2)

My system is a mid-2007 iMac (Intel) with latest software updates always promptly installed (OSX Mavericks, etc) and 320 GB internal HD, 4GB Ram.
Today the software updater informed me that an update to iTunes was available and so I allowed it to download the update and then restart the computer. The restart was not successful - the computer display will show the status window progressing as the update is installed and then nears completion, but will freeze at the apparant point of completion and the restart will not complete. I tried restarting several times and it always hangs up and does not complete.
I then ran the Disc Utilities program - first time I ran it, it identified disc problems with the internal HD and proceeded to repair them. Following that I trried to restartt and it ran into the same difficulties and did not restart. Subsequently I ran disc utilities and it reports the internal HD to be fine. I've also tried several times to boot the computer and restore from my Time Machine backups and it will not complete the restore. I do get to the screens where I can select the volume to restore from, the volume to restore to, and so forth. After these efforts were not successful, I finally tried to re-download OSX and do a clean system restore, it progressed nearly to completion and then aborted the system installation without completing.
Since having this problem I've therefore been unable to use the computer in Mac mode. I had just about concluded that my hard disc must be replaced, when I decided to see if I could restart running Windows (bootcamp), and I was able to do that successfully. The hard disc is therefore not damaged, or at least the partition of the hard disc used by Windows is not damaged.
Is my most likely option to replace the hard disc or is there something I can still do, in order to see if the hard disc can be restored using a saved backup, before I replace it?
I have the further complication of finding that the Apple store will not replace the hard disc for my computer because it is over 5 years old. I can probably locate a shop such as Best Buy locally who can do that, or I can simply purchase an external hard disc and use that as my primary hard disc until I either replace the internal hard disc or simply replace the computer. Since it is a 7 year old iMac, it would not be surprising to have to replace the hard disc after this length of time. I also see that there are instructions available online to explain how to replace the internal hard disc myself, but I'm unsure at this point whether or not I want to do it myself.

Lacking any responses to my initial post above, I will briefly update how I resolved this issue today.
Installed new external hard disc, 1 TB WD My Passport for Mac, and straightforward setup involving first installing current OS X operating system, then system migrator utility to rebuild the same setup as saved in latest Time Machine backup. The whole process was somewhat time consuming due to my internet connection speed and USB data transfer speeds but it went without any issues. The computer now boots up and operates identical in all respects to how it did before the problem occurred.
Regarding the internal HD of my iMac, if I now run Disc Utility to verify the disc, it reports "appears to be OK". However, viewing the disc usage in "About This Mac" window, it displays as entirely empty. Opening it in the finder also shows only a "Apple Hot News.mbox" file and a single .jpeg image, and .nothing else.
Interestingly, the Bootcamp partition of my iMac's internal HD continues to work fine and appears unaffected by the problem. I use bootcamp rarely but still will plan to set up a replacement bootcamp volume on the new hard disc soon, in order to take its place.
That the problem surfaced coincident with the software update may have been nothing more than bad luck? At this point I have no reason to suspect that the softward update had anything to do with the difficulties.
