IMac sometimes won't switch off

I trust this is the Yosemite discussion... In general, my iMac, vintage late 2007 with an SSD installed has responded well to the installation of Yosemite. The only problem is that, at times, when I want to shut down the computer, it closes some programs (Safari, Mail, Firefox for example) but the shut-down process ceases. The upper menu disappears but not the Dock. In fact, if I go into the Dock and start up a program, I can regain access to the command bar at the top of the screen. Sometimes Finder is also not available and, occasionally, I have no choice but to use the on-off switch to convince the computer to shut down. It has always restarted when switched back on and after a few seconds of configuring.
This iMac has Parallels with a Windows partition, and I don't know if there could be some conflict here - under Mavericks, there has been no problem, but now, if iMac misbehaves as described above, the desktop pictures are not the ones I have for the Mac partition, but those I have in the Windows partition, even though I have not been working in Windows, and have had Boot Camp disconnected.
Is there any indication that Parallels and Win have in some way conflicted with Yosemite, or what the culprit might be?

"CleanMyMac" is a scam and a common cause of instability and poor performance. The developer's instructions don't completely remove it. Follow those instructions, then do as below.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder may open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Repeat with this line:
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac2.Agent
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Depending on the version of the product that was installed and how it was removed, you may also have to remove these items in the same way:
~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.helperTool.plist ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac.volumeWatcher.plist
Never again install "CleanMyMac" or anything like it.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • IMac G4 won't turn off

hey, my iMac G4 won't turn off. When I select "Shut Down" from the Apple menu, nothing happens. If I press 'OptionShift+CommandS' nothing happens. Each time I want to turn off my computer I have to manually hit the power switch, which I'm sure isn't too good for it.
    Any advice?

nevermind, I fixed it, there was some kind of stupid option to disable the shutdown & restart buttons in the Apple menu, I must have done this w/o realizing it. Oh well, at least this debacle reminded me to run a system scan w/ techtools

  • My safari won't switch off - what can i do?

i opened a page which should have allowed me to download a mock TOCFL exam (that's the standardized chinese exam in taiwan), but instead i just got a page of gibberish and since then skype won't let me close it, also while closing tabs there's no longer an x to click, instead i have to right click and then close it that way. anyone know what's going on here? also since safari won't switch off, i have no way of trying to deinstall and then reinstall it...any suggestions?

Select  ▹ Force Quit... from the menu bar, then select Safari and press return. Do the same with Skype.
Run Software Update and install all available updates.
Reinstalling system components is rarely the solution to any problem, and certainly not to this one.

there is no standby time on my iphone 4 as the music won't switch off no matter what i do?

Try a hard reset while connected to power: (adapter, not iTunes on computer): Press and hold both the Home button and Sleep/wake button at the same time for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple Logo appears.
If this doesn't work: try to force restore: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
NB: the article above will erase all data and content, so make sure you've got a backup
    Good luck

  • Wifi symbol missing plus phone won't switch off

My wifi symbol is missing from my screen, settings say I am connected, checked this by turning cellular data off and I can still access Internet so I must be connected.
Thought by switching off and turning on again might fix the issue but my phone won't switch off.
Can anyone offer any assistance? I'm a bit of a technophobe so need things in laymans terms please.
My iPad and another iPhone are showing as connected to the same wifi network.
    I have an iPhone 5.

    RESET DEVICE
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost).

  • I have a white screen on my iphone 3G since last night.. I tried a holding home and on/off buttons down but it won't switch off - help

I have a white screen on my iphone 3G since last night.. I tried a holding home and on/off buttons down but it won't switch off - help

Apparently, this is caused by a loose connection between the "guts" of the phone and the LCD screen. While it only displays white, the touch screen will still operate correctly - so if you know where to swipe, you can still power it off or unlock the screen, or touch to answer a call or etc.
With my phone, pinching the top right corner near the power button while pushing the home/power button to wake up the phone, seems to tighten the connection enough for it to work. I have not had to maintain the pinch after waking up the phone, but I do have to do it each time I unlock the screen. I have gotten by for about 6 months so far, and hoping the iphone 5's come out soon!!

  • Won't switch off after upgrade

  • Won't switch off/on: Rebooting Cycle

The sleep/wake button appears to have stopped working (although can be depressed). The get the iPod to work, one must give it power and then use immediately after unplugging before it goes to sleep. It won't switch off, but after use (and when would normally auto-lock) goes into an apparent rebooting cycle where the screen goes from black (off) to lighting up with Apple logo, and back to black (off) - it will continue in this cycle until the battery dies. Once it is in this cycle, the sleep/wake and home buttons do not function.
    Any ideas?
I've tried holding sleep/wake and home buttons for 10 secs to reset - no change.
I've tried connecting it to the computer and checking for updates - the only one which comes up is an update which requires payment for, and I'm loathed to do this in case the iPod is broken and ends up in the bin! The iPod Touch is only 18 months only.

    2 possibilities:
o Your iPod has a software-based error. Solution: On iTunes, click on the "Restore" button in your iPod's page.
o Your iPod has a physical problem. Solution: Depending on the actual problem, go to an apple store, and they will tell you if they can do anything to it. If they can't, I'm sorry, but your iPod's good for the bin.

My ipad has frozen on me in the middle of watching bbc iplayer and won't switch off either.  Any suggestions.

It does not specifically address this particular issue per se. Rebooting/resetting the iPad is a basic troubleshooting tip that covers a whole multitudes of little issues in iOS devices.
This is a screenshot of page 127 of the iOS 6 support pdf manual for the iPad.

  • My iPod nano won't switch off

I've just bought a nano iPod and for some reason unknown to me it won't switch off. Everytime I hold down the menu button nothing happens, or when something does happen, the apple logo comes on the screen for a few seconds (as it does when you reset the iPod) then it goes back to the 'home' screen on the iPod again. I've tried the '3 R's to sort this out, and since I updated my older iPod as well, that has refused to switch off too. PLEASE help me.

    Everytime I hold
down the menu button nothing happens,
    Hi,
Is that a typo? You press the play/pause button to turn it off

Force shutting down like that isn't wise. Eventually the directory may get damaged. If you had a force shut down for another reason that may have started the loop of having trouble. Backup your data, and follow these instructions for repair of the directory:

If they don't work, you will want to get Alsoft Disk Warrior.
