IMac sound card/back-up drive issues???

I've just taken delivery of my new 27" iMac....what a sweet piece of design!!!
I've had to order a 6-pin to 9-pin adaptor for my sound card (Saffire LE) and I've just noticed there is only one 9-pin port in the iMac. Does this mean I won't be able to have my back up drive and my sound card connected at the same time???? That would really suck not having my Mybook set up to automatically backup.
Previously I was running Logic through a macbook pro which allowed me to use the 6 pin port for my sound card and 9 pin port for my back up drive (WD Mybook).
Any advice would be appreciated.
Cheers

Will the devices and the iMac do the rest in terms of recognising what is plugged into what and running everything correctly?
Sure. That's kind of the whole point of a daisychain-able, hotswappable format, which firewire was designed to be from the outset. But as I said, your mileage may vary as not all devices play as nice as others. You just have to test it and figure out which order plugging them in works best for you. Also be careful with sleep settings on your computer because sometimes when waking up from sleep, audio interfaces on firewire don't like to wake up, or they get annoyed if there's something else on the buss.. And then also be mindful of the performance you get. Some users experience audio dropouts and crackling when the audio interface + whatever else are connected in a certain order, which is fine after swapping things round. You might want to ask another question here stating exactly the gear you use in the subject line, because there are sure to be other users that specifically have the same interface, imac and ext drive as you, so you'll be able to benefit from their experience on how to get it working trouble free.

  • Sound Card Problem, or Driver Problem? Games crash, when they didn't befo

Not sure what the problem is, but seems to be a sound problem of some sort. I have just re-installed Vista 64. And now when I try to play BF242, the game crashes before I even see any kind of gameplay. It also instantly crashes when I click on the audio options tab. I have installed the latest drivers from the site. I have even uninstalled them, and launched the game without any drivers, and the game runs perfectly fine, but only without sound.
But I've been able to play BF242 before, but it would evenutally crash after a while, but at least I was able to get into the game. So knowing that Ive been able to play before, and it played without any drivers, I dug up some drivers that I know I had working at one point when the game was playing. And it still crashes before it gets into the game.
So this makes me wonder, is this really a driver problem or a soundcard problem?
All sounds are perfectly fine elsware, music, movies, OS tones, web, etc. Crysis runs perfectly fine. Company of Heros Crashes, Quake Wars crashed about 0 mins into a game. Team Fortress 2 runs perfectly fine. Battlefield 2 instantly crashes.
    Here's my specs:
    Vista 64 Ultimate
    Asus P5W DH Deluxe
    Asus nVidia 8800 GTX
    4gig Corsair XMS2 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel
Powersupply Antec True Power Trio TP3-550 550W ATX2V Power Supply with Three 2V Rails
Sound Blaster x-fi fatality (whatever the one that comes with the front computer interface)
Any help would be great. I'd hate to go buy a new sound card just to try it, unless I had a pretty good idea that it was the issue.

I think I found the problem. It was the physical card itself. I pulled my old Audialogy card out of my old machine, and swapped it. Now BF242 runs.
And mine never went to a black screen, and had to hard reset. It just dumped right to the desktop with a message "bf242.exe has stopped working."

  • Acquiring 24-bit sound with a third-party sound card... truncation issues.

I am having a very strange problem when using LabVIEW to acquire audio
data via the Windows API from a Creative Professional E-MU 1616m sound
card.  The goal is to acquire sound in 24-bit resolution.
When capturing sound in 16-bit mode (as set in the LabVIEW software),
the E-MU 1616m behaves as expected, with a 105dB SNR and approximately
-130dB noise floor, after dithering.  However, when switching to
24-bit capture mode, a very severe truncation occurs.  This sends
the harmonic distortion and noise through the roof.  After
investigating fairly deeply in our LabVIEW code, I am wondering what
    might be the problem.
I have compiled a number of screenshots which showcase the problem in more detail.
Here is a background of the experiment:
For these tests, both the analog and digital audio was generated by an
Audio Precision System Two system, and was passed directly into the
respective line-level or digital audio inputs.  Digital audio was
tested using both coax and optical cable.  In the sound card
control software, the audio was sent directly from the input channel
into the WAVE IN L/R (via the Windows API, I assume).  The
sampling rate for the profile was 96kHz.
The sampling rate in all LabVIEW functions was set to 96kHz.  The sample rate set in the AP Digital generator was 96kHz.
    ANALOG 20dBu 96kHz 16bit.jpg
In this test, everything looks fine.  The audio input is at
Full-scale for the E-mu's ADCs.  It is exhibiting expected 16-bit
    performance (with dithering).
    ANALOG 20dBu 96kHz 24bit.jpg
Now we instruct the driver to capture sound in 24 bits.  Notice
that the noise floor and THD+N go up considerably.  Effects of
truncation become visible on the time-domain display.
    ANALOG -20dBu 96kHz 16bit.jpg
Now we drop the input level to -20dBu.   The performance
starts to look a little messy but is still acceptable.  Note,
however, the high peaks on the odd harmonics.
    ANALOG -20dBu 96kHz 24bit.jpg
Now we try to capture at 24 bits.  The effects of truncation are extreme at this low signal level.
    ANALOG -60dBu 96kHz 16bit.jpg
Now we are at extremely low signal levels.  Individual
quantization levels can be seen on the signal.  Dither is also
    present.  Performance is still good.
    ANALOG -60dBu 96kHz 24bit.jpg
However, when increasing the resolution to 24 (which should increase
the number of quantization levels), our signal is reduced to a square
    wave.  Obviously something is wrong.
    DIGITAL 0dB 16bit 96kHz 16bit.jpg
Now on to the digital tests.  We start with full-scale.  We
used an AP outputting a properly dithered 16-bit signal over an optical
cable.  The soundcard is instructed to receive in 16 bit
    mode.  It looks good.
    DIGITAL 0dB 16bit 96kHz 24bit.jpg
Using the same input, we change to 24 bit receive mode.
    DIGITAL 0dB 24bit 96kHz 16bit.jpg
Now we set up the AP to output a properly dithered 24-bit signal at
full-scale.  The dips in the frequency domain show us that
    something is wrong.
    DIGITAL 0dB 24bit 96kHz 24bit.jpg
Receiving in 24-bit mode.  Same story as before.
    DIGITAL -90dB 16bit 96kHz 16bit.jpg
Now we decrease the amplitude to a low level.  Well-implemented dither is shown here clearly.
    DIGITAL -90dB 16bit 96kHz 24bit.jpg
However, receiving in 24-bit mode reduces the signal to a dithered square wave.
    DIGITAL -90dB 24bit 96kHz 16bit.jpg
Here is the low-level signal with the AP generating a 24-bit
signal.  Dither is applied, but vanishes in the e-mu 1616m.
It seems the dither level has been changed.  This is the cause of
    our dips from before.
    DIGITAL -90dB 24bit 96kHz 24bit.jpg
And finally, we transmit and receive in 24-bits.  Here are the results.
We have achieved similar results using several of your breakout boxes and soundcards.
Attached are all screenshots, as well as the main VI (AP Test.vi) and
the dependent vi's.  There are a number of SVT vi's in the
project, but they can be ignored since they are not related to the
    problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Brett,
I took a look at the code you attached, but it appears that you may have left out the subvi that actually acquires the sound. When you say Windows API, I assume that you are calling a DLL at some point. How are you configuring the inputs (or what function are you using)? It could be (and this is just a guess) that when you specify 24 bits, the DLL returns the data in a very specific format. If you don't interpret the bits that are returned correctly, LabVIEW may not know what to do with them, as LabVIEW does not have a native 24-bit datatype. If there is any documentation for these function calls, our answer might there...
Just some thoughts -- thanks for posting your solution!

  • Are there any sound cards with best driver support for Arch?

I was wondering if there are any sound cards that have the best driver support for ArchLinux? I currently own a Creative Labs X-FI Platinum Edition. The main reason I like the Platinum is that has an interface you can plug MIDI and Audio ports into. It seems to me, however, that Creative is the worst company to support Linux drivers. If anyone has any opinions, please feel free to comment. According to all my research, ALSA sound drivers are the most supportive for sound. Am I also correct in this assumption?

yeah, creative sucks. go with m-audio. they support linux unlike creative.

  • Has any one come up with a solution to the "the disk was not ejected properly" when using time machine with an iMac and seagate back up drive?

I recently bought an iMac and love it.
Only proplem I have is I keep getting an error message "the disk was not ejected properly"
Everything is backing up fine on my Seagate 2TB external USB drive.
Each time there is access on the seagate and it stops in between needing to back up again I get this message.
    Can anyone help?

    The drive is malfunctioning.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, it has to be replaced. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Since Lion, imac sound cards don't show up.

    Hi Guys,
Upgraded to lion. Sometimes when i reboot my internal sound and firewire recording interface both won't work. Both still show up in about my mac and i get the chime on powerup so they can't be dead.
I have to keep rebooting til i get lucky and it remembers them
This has only started happening since lion!
imac late 2006, intel c2d. Never had any problems with it!

    Hi Roozor,
Hd the same problem. I use M audio Firewire solo and therein lies the problem. If you turn the Mac off, pull everything out and hold the on/off switch for 10 sec and then reboot you'll find the internal sound again. I decided to wait for an update of the M audio driver, since it repeated the problem after retrying. Good luck!

  • Weird imac sound is this hard drive or super drive?

hi I have this weird sound in my Imac and I was wondering why I keep on hearing this sound most of the time.
does this something to do with the hard drive? or the super drive? or both? or none?
I have tried resetting PRAM but the sound is still here
Does anyone have the same problem with mine? Any help on what to do to make this sound disappear?
like what troubleshooting do i have to do if applicable? this sound has been bothering me for months
my imac has a built in super drive
this sound is appearing randomly and frequently
I hear this sound even if my imac is in mute
    here is the video

  • Sound card fails when modem taken out- no longer wo

My OS is Windows 98 First Edition.
I recently replaced an internal, PCI slot LT Winmodem and put in a USR internal, ISA slot modem. I didn't follow exact instructions for this sort of change but the Creative website says that one of their sound cards can fail to work when some piece of hardware is changed. I took out my sound card and see that it only says "Ensoniq" on it and doesn't have any of the usual Creative ID markings on it. [My software to identify hardware says it's a "Creative Sound Blaster Audio PCI 64V" sound card. Another hardware-identifying app I have calls it "Creative SB PCI 28 (Ensoniq ES37) sound card".]
When I want to listen to a webcast or play any WAV or MID file, I get:
"MPlayer2 (Windows Media Player, v. 6.4.07.24) has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. MPLayer2 caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll at
05f:bff9dba7." [Same message when I use Real Player.]
At this same time, the following message appears: "Windows Media Player error: Can't play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding. Error=80040256."
I got this Creative sound card back in June 999 when I got the computer that contains it. It's worked fine up 'til the recent modem change.
In an attempt to fix this problem, I removed all entries and driver files for it, deleted a bunch of files that Creative says should be deleted for such a problem. I turned off the computer and took out the sound card and put it into another PCI slot. Then when I turned the computer back on, Windows says it found new hardware and wanted to install software for it. But I used the hardware drivers CD I got with the computer and installed the Creative files for my sound card. But this didn't help: I still cannot play any sounds.
The sound card fits firmly and squarely into the PCI slot.
What is the correct order of steps to take in order to end this problem and restore to the sound card the ability to produce sounds? I'm still annoyed by the error message due to the sound card apparently causing some problem - by use of Windows Media Player or RealPlayer - with Kernel32.dll?
Would getting the latest driver files from Creative's website fix this or does it sound like something else is wrong?
[My OS is Windows 98 First Edition.]
    Thanks

    dwh wrote:
I doubt newer drivers would help this.
I'd suggest checking your IRQ settings a conflict (sharing), particularly between the new modem and the soundcard. You can determine the resources using device manager, but using the System Information tool isn't quite as tedious.
Do you have another PCI slot to try?
    -Dave
    [email protected]
I'm not at home now (so I can't give here in this forum the best of info right now) but I have looked at IRQ settings several times when at home. I know I've seen the Sound Blaster/Ensoniq sound card holding the same IRQ as my USB port. [Both are on IRQ 0 along with some "computer steering" entry which I've read is OK to be with any hardware item's IRQ.] [I've never used my USB port. Perhaps I can just disable it and thereby free up the IRQ just for the sound card. Does this sound reasonable to do?]
I'll report back here later on what I was able to do with the IRQs and if any change there helped. [Should I take out the card and put it into some other PCI slot? I have 4 PCI slots, one being occupied by the sound card.]
    Thanks for your help

  • Sound card in 6182

i have a ms-6182 which was working fine on win98se. i was trying to change OS to win2000 days ago and everything was fine expect i cannot get the sound card working. the driver i downloaded from the MSI website doesn't even recognize the hardware. The strange thing is that when I change back to win98se, the sound card is gone as well.
    anyone can help? thanks

assuming you mean onboard sound not an add in soundcard, did you load the drivers

  • Acquire from a sound card at 96kHz

I want to use a high quality sound card (sampling rate of 96kHz) to aquire sound data and process it with LabView7. Is it possible? I have seen that sound vi's seems to be limited at 44100 Hz... Thank you in advance!

    Hello,
The high value of 44K is only listed as a common rate.  The Help for the function states that "Common rates are 44,100 S/s, 22,050 S/s, and 11,025 S/s." however, this is not to imply that these are the only options available.  The limitations of this VI will be imposed by your sound card and the driver you are using.  I tried using 96000 as a value for my sampling rate in the shipping example (Help >> Find Examples) Continuous Sound Input.vi and it seemed to work fine.  Let me know if you have questions.
One note for future reference,  this post is in the Spanish discussion forums.  You will probably get answers more quickly if you post in the English forums.

  • Problem logging off windows 7 on AD domain - Sound Card issue New model iMac 2011

I am looking for help for a strange problem we have on our new 21.5inch iMac computers (mid-2011 model), Our whole IT team have worked for a week to find solutions and we have exhausted all of our ideas. Please note we have an identical setup on our old mid-2010 model iMacs, which experience NONE of the same problems, windows logon and log offs are quick and painless. We have conducted side by side identical tests, so this forces us to assume it is a hardware/driver issue.
Basically our iMacs have BootCamp installed with Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 is our default operating system. We have joined these computers to our Active Directory Domain and the users are all roaming with redirected folders.
The issue is the following: When a domain user logs off, it can take up to 25 minutes for the User Profile Session to finally log off and return to the normal Ctrl-Alt-Del menu, the next user who logs on usually is just left hanging and with no ability to logon. After a hard-restart the system logs on normally, but then can experience same problems at logoff.
We see the issue when the user watches lots of Flash Player videos on a browser such as Firefox and Chrome, although we've seen the same problem when other applications are used on the computer such as Windows Live Movie Maker.
So far we have found only one solution: If we disable the Cirrus Logic Audio Driver CS4206A (AB 9), and High Definition Audio Driver from the Sound, Video and Game Controllers within Device Manager and restart the computer, the system behaves normally, logon and log off times are a few seconds. But naturally we have no sound which is unacceptable.
We have tried everything we can think of including: Fresh installs of both OS, full updates of OS's, Firmware and Software, Manually updating sound drivers, changing users and AD Domains and attempts to force stop all services on logout etc.
We would appreciate any and all help to get to the bottom of this, including advice on what to try next.

Just wanted to feedback on this and say our solution was the following:
Download and installed Universal Driver Pack within Win 7 , which included a AMD High Definition Audio Driver and replaced the High Definition Audio Driver Installed.
I have also informed Apple and Microsoft of this issue, hopefully someone will take some notice and update the driver.

  • Sound card driver issu

I have above card & 5. dell surround sound speakers. Were working perfectly until i had a operating system crash about 2 months or so ago. Had to restore OS losing all my data & programmes. When restored noticed sound was bad, so installed the very latest drivers from creative. However my front left & front right speaker have no sound. They give that faint hiss sound when put to my ear so they should work. I have tried uninstalling that driver and trying others to no effect. I have reseated sound card, tried different drivers & nothing works at all(& yes i've checked the obvious). Heres a few things i've noted.. I can no longer use the creative volume panel on my taskbar. A strange white box appears with nothing in it. I have to use control panel in start menu-so i've lost the equaliser.2. The driver date when i access hardware manager is showing as August but it was recent i d/loaded that driver.3. After installing driver it defaults to 2. speaker setup.4. Earlier I enabled a sigma tel High def audio CODEC & the speakers worked(Fleft/Fright), but the other 3 do not work. I had disabled this about 3 week ago because i was trying to get a game to work. That was'nt the problem with the game & i forgot to reinstate it. I'm no expert but is that the onboard sound card? I don't need that enabled right?I really am clueless now. i have ran diagnostics on sound card & it says it works fine & the speakers definitely work ok, so i'm guessing it's a corrupt driver but am no expert. Have tried fdriver cleaner to, & i followed instructions to letter but this may have worsened it.

Forgot to add what card i use. It's a Sound Blaster X-fi Xtreme music card. Other specs if needed - 4.3 ghz pentium, 7600gt, 2gig system ram.

  • Creative in the dock over driver issues for older cards and upsetting consumers please read!

To Who this may concern at TOP LEVEL AT Creative's Board It's come to my attention to a very serious issue From Creative, and the story starts from here.
I have just required the Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card so looking to install the latest drivers from CREATIVE'S UK WEBSITE. So I look into the date which is 9/4/200 on Creative's website. However I did abit more investigating into the issues from other consumer's from passed half soaked drivers that Creative are supposed to put right with their half asleep development team(what a joke!!).
AS I did more research? on this issue on the forums and hardware websites, it came across to my attention on a Brazilian I. T. Expert called Daniel Kawakami (surprisesurprise and I don't suppose Creative know anything about him other than trying to kick him the balls for his work to help others with their sound cards very good PR work Creative well done!!!!).So armed with all this information and believe me I have gone into alot of reading in the forums about the issues, and yes Creative Board Of Directors you are entitled to your Copy Rights, for now !!!
So I find out more about this super hero Daniel Kawakami? to Creative's miss givings to put right the Drivers for Consumers let down by Creative, I came across one of the driver updates for the Audigy 2 ZS Sound Card done by Daniel Kawakami, and Bingo most consumer's now have a working drivers by him.
So for all the hard work and precious time this Daniel Kawakami has done for Creative Consumers(including me) YOU SELFISH CREATIVE BOARD OF DIRECTOR'S go and kick him the face, so I will say this to you what about his rights as a creative product consumer? ,his driver copy rights and on top that his right to put things right that your team cannot put right in the first place. This is the EXACT PEOPLE WE NEED IN THIS HIGHLY COMPLICATED IT INDUSTRY, so what do you do you try and do, you bin him.
So Creative I am going to ask some questions and I EXPECT YOU TO ANSWER THEM with me as a CONSUMER OF YOUR PRODUCTS(customer is King not you!!)
    1. The drivers you realised on the 9th April 200 are working drivers for the Audigy 2 zs for windows 7 ultimate.
    2. So how can you convince me that they are working?
    3. At the moment I can only trust Daniel Kawakami's? working drivers, since he has had over whelming praise for his work. What makes me think I can trust you with your drivers.
    4. Your Drivers came out on the 9/4/200, Daniel Kawakami's Drivers came out on 9/4/200 its too close a call, since your development Team are too lazy to put things right, how can you convince me that you did not copy his Drivers into your download Driver website(I would not be surprised if you did, as it would certainly be a cost cutting exercise ,and taking away his copy rights for all the work he has done for nothing!!!)
    5. Are you going to treat customer and consumers better service and support? in the Future, and that includes me,and 3rd party developers like Daniel Kawakami .
The concussion to all of this, there are lessons to be learned by you Creative for your mis givings and the treatment of customers passed and present and especially the appalling treatment of Daniel Kawakami ,this guy deserves far better for his talent. I Have one message for the President Of Creative ,don't you EVER think you can scare me as a customer and also as Registered? disabled deaf person ,and for that reason I have far more powers you will ever have. For what I have read I am so angry and dismayed when someone like Daniel Kawakami is only trying help others ,but to be treated in this way.
It is only right for me to post this ,because You Creative have hurt? alot people and that includes me. I look forward to the comments and p.m.(if I get any) And Daniel Kawakami? I hope you do read this and all the best for the future ,keep doing what you do ,and once again Creative you should be holding your heads in Shame.

    Problemas de memoria superior a 4 gb e tantos outros que Creative no tem respostas;
    Chega a ser vergonhoso que placas onboard como realtek funcionem melhor que placas Creative;
Realmente, antes era um sonho e orgulho possuir um produto CREATIVE, tornou-se um pesadelo e uma vergonha.
Mas enfim o que fazer, apenas esperar um momento de honestidade por parte de Creative.
Flavio Kern - Audigy 2 ZS
Creative will never respond. So it would be fair if Creative would publish his inability to speak and that even where the plates Audigy would work in Vista and 7. But by incompetence, since neither her new adapter works right, if it was to sell is poorly. Problems of memory above 4 gb, and so many others that Creative does not have answers; Daniel and Pax Drivers are alternati'ves, but which also has many limitations. I honestly think this time Creative come publico do a serious story, and describe clearly the limitations of your cards by putting an end-point on expectations, frustrations and forgeries. It is shameful that onboard realtek cards like that boards Creative work better; Actually, before it was a dream and pride have a CREATIVE product, became a nightmare and a shame. But anyway what to do, just wait a moment of honesty from Creative.

  • USB Flash Drive Issue On iMac - 1.1 on iMac, 2.0 on any other Mac

    I have a Core i7 27" Late 2009 iMac.
I just noticed this issue today.
I have a couple of Patriot XPorter XT USB Flash drives that I use among my Macs to transfer big files around.
Hooking one of the 8GB flash drives to my iMac, the one listed above, it shows the device operating at USB 1.1 speeds, whether it's in a powered hub, or one of the 4 USB ports in the back of the machine. This was odd, because this was the first time it had ever done this. I only noticed this due to the painfully slow transfer rate the Finder was reporting to me. Restarting the iMac, cold starting the iMac, resetting permissions, PRAM and SMC did nothing. I thought it was a bum drive.
So I grabbed a 16GB flash drive (same brand and model family, different capacity) and it works perfectly fine on the iMac at USB 2.0 speeds. Hmm...
So I boot the iMac into Win 7 Ultimate x64. Both drives are listed at USB 2.0 speeds. Something is definitely afoot here.
To make sure I'm not losing my sanity, I grab my MacBook Pro and test the drives in there. Both drives are listed at USB 2.0 speeds.
I then run to my Mac Pro. Both drives are listed at USB 2.0 speeds.
Did something go wonky on my iMac?
    Machine specs (for comparison above)
    iMac 27" i7 2.8GHz - 16GB RAM
    MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz - 4GB RAM
    Mac Pro Xeon 2.66GHz - 12GB RAM

I think that you are just running into a communication blip between the thumb drive and the controller for the USB ports on your iMac. It is obviously reading the 8 GB drive as older and slower and is assigning that lessor priority to the bus serving the drive.
Have you tried attaching the drive directly to the iMac with no other device connected to a USB port? If it is the same, then I doubt there is anything that you can do, that is going to be the way the USB controller reads this thumb drive.
