IMac Sound Disabled Occasionally On Start Up?

So as the title says when I boot up my iMac, on occasion, it seems to have the "Updating" Status bar, then the mac boots normally, then the sound is disabled. As I said though this dose not happed all the time but when it dose the only way to fix it is by rebooting the iMac once again. Its not a major or super urgent issue but can be quite an annoancy.
If anyone else has this issue or knows how to fix it some knoladge would be gladly appreciated!
Thanks!
Processor  2.5 GHz Intel Core i5

This is interesting - I had a similar "scare" a few times in the past until I "accidently" found the solution. If your volume is set to "mute" before you reboot, the startup chime will be muted as well. This may not be the specific scenario for you, but it might be a start =)

Imac  have black screen. Start Computer sound come on, no picture. The last time I used the computer I put it to sleep, it never came back.  i tried everything that was suggested including puting in the start up disk.  The disk would not eject.  Some one suggested how to remove it and that did work.  Computer going to Apple hospital Tues. There is nothing wrong with the OS update.
    Delete ALL your email accounts.
    Restart Playbook
Put the accounts back and ensure they are all set with PUSH ON.  Manual (push off) will burn battery.
Similarly delete your wifi connections and add back when required.
Turn off wifi is not connected to wifi.
Any "hunting for connection" in email or wifi will burn up battery.

  • Imac sound problem

Approx 6 months ago started having sound issues with imac which is set up as a media center. The imac output is connected to an AV receiver via optic cable. The problem is no sound on imac programs safari, itunes etc when starting from sleep if a program is left open prior to going to sleep. Movies have picture but no sound, itunes has no sound and does not start playing the song. Quit open programs and restart computer or put to sleep and wake the sound is restored. Eye tv sound is not affected. If programs except eye tv are quit prior to going to sleep there are no issues on start up. Disconnect the AV receiver and the problem still exists?????????????

Thanks for the info, below are the results.
Started computer from sleep no sound on system. Checked Audio Midi System as suggested Audio Default and System set to Unknown Device. Reset both to Built in Output and checked sound still no go. Force quit itunes and put to sleep and reactivate sound all good Audio Default and System remained in Built in Output. Watched recording through Eye TV for about an hour then checked sound through itunes, no go. The Audio Default and System had both reverted to Unknown Device yet the Eye TV sound was not affected???????
Quit all programs last night except Eye TV and let mac go to sleep. Checked this morning sound is fine. It appears that when itunes, safari etc is open and not use for a period the Audio Default and System reverts Built in Output to Unknown Device.
BDAqua it looks like your longshot has identified where the issue is occuring and thank you. The next stage is determining why and how to fix the issue................appreciate you comments.

  • Presario CQ60 211DX sound disabled after lid closed?

Installed XP a few weeks ago on Presario CQ60 211DX, everything's fine, but when I close the lid and it goes to sleep, the sound is disabled when I start it back up. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
    Download audio driver from here.
Intructions how to install it in XP.
    Extract this driver with Winrar.
Open Device manager and expand the Sound, video and game controllers section.
Right click on Either the High Definition Audio Device if you have the generic Microsoft drivers, or the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221 if you have older Conexant drivers and choose "Update Driver Software..."
Click Browse my computer for driver software, then click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
Click "Have Disk..." then Browse to the folder where the drivers were extracted  .......\XP32 for 32-bit XP. Click OK.
Select one of the "Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221" models in the list, there will be multiple identical entries.
    Click Next, and you're done.
I'm not sure which one from the list will work for You. On CQ60 few users confirmed then first one worked for them.

  • IMac G5 PowerPC won't start - any ideas?

My iMac G5 PowerPC won't start - the initial chime will sound, but nothing appears on the screen. After about 10 seconds the fan starts to run at a very high speed. The "on" light does not come on. To shut it down I hold control, open-apple, and press the start button.
Obviously, I am going to have to take it somewhere for a repair estimate but I would like to have some idea of what may be wrong.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Before we become too gloomy, first try re-setting the SMU. Very simple procedure. The chime is a bit of good news, but this could be the power supply, the logic board or both.

If this is a non-iSight model, you can take the back off (three captive screws at bottom; don't unscrew them too far, just enough to get the back loose.) Very easy to do. Then follow this procedure to see what the LED lights are saying about what might be wrong.

Also, look for swollen, or leaking capacitors on the board. They are numerous, little metal cans about 3/4 inch tall. Inspect for perfectly flat, not rounded, tops.

  • Imac Sound not working

Our iMac sound has just failed. Won't work on youtube, etc.  On reboot, sound works.  Then fails again later.  Recently software updated to latest. i3- 3.06mhz.
    Thanks!

Try these two resets.  The SMC will be most effective:
    SMC RESET:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    PRAM Reset:
1- Ensure the machine is powered off.
2- Locate the following keys on your keyboard in preparation for Step 4:
    ‘command’ – ‘option’ – ‘P’ – ‘R’
3- Press the ‘power on’ button.
4- Immediately – and before the grey screen appears – hold down ‘command-option-P-R’ all together.
5- Keep them held down until you’ve heard the start-up chime twice. After you release them you should hear it again, and hopefully your Mac will boot up normally

What model MBP and which version of OS X? Sounds as if the hard drive may have failed. If you have an installation disc, try booting with it. If your machine came with Lion or Mountain Lion, try booting to the Recovery partition - Command and R keys held down while booting.

  • IMac DV green light on start button lights for a second then nothing!

    Hi All,
My iMac DVSE 400 will not start up. When I unplug and replug power wire on back of iMac while in it is plugged into the wall socket..nothing happens, When I simply unplug from the wall sockect, the light in the on-off button turns green for a second or two...then nothing. Can you help me to diagnose and repair. Thanks.
iMac DV SE 400, 1 GB RAM, 128GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Hope to get help!

I would suggest a PRAM reset. Immediately after pressing the power button, hold down the following keys; commandoption+PR. Let it chime three time, then release the keys.
    Hope it helps,
    Rick

  • My iMac 2009 model won't start.

My iMac 2009 model won't start. Was working fine the night before, tried to on it but still no response. I also tried unplugging and plugging into the main switch plus other power points several times , doesn't work either. Please assist as most of work and important information are stored in it. Thank you

When you press the power button, what happens?  When you say "no response," does that mean it does not power on at all?
You unplugged from power and plugged it back, but I would try it again following this procedure for resetting SMC exactly
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
When you connect it back, if you are using a "power strip," try connecting it directly to a wall outlet.  Be sure to check the connection of the power cord at the iMac end (disconnect and reconnect there too).  You should disconnect ALL cables from the iMac and try to start it up with only the power cord connected.

  • Sound randomly stops and starts

    Hello,
Over 2 days, as I watch Netflix, or listen to music on other apps, my sound randomly stops and starts.  I have no control of it.  I do not have to touch my ipod when this happens, it does this on its own.  On for 20 min, off for 5 min, on for 5, off for 2, on for 1 min, off for 15 min.  It ossolates randomly through time.
I hard reboot, but this works or does not work (for a while).  Any ideas?

  • There is whirling sound when my macbook starts up

there is whirling sound when my macbook starts up

Sure! Not only your MBP dear gwforeman, everyone's does! Mine too, but without the disk in the drive. The hissing whirling sound starts sometimes at startup after the Mac's DING chime, sometimes when the MBP is up n' running and it starts in middle of nowhere. Seems something stuck in fan or MBP is protesting with a hissing sound that something is going wrong inside. Activity Monitor's report seems fine though.
No idea, what's going on.... Any buddy out there with a solution???
