IMac sound just up and quit

So here I was, just minding my own business, listening to music or something and all of a sudden BLAM my speakers just stopped working.  I try to adjust the volume but I get the Ghostbusters-style circle with a cross through it when I do (indicating that volume control is no longer an option).  I brought up output sound options in my system preferences and it simply states "The selected device has no output controls".
I've been searching all over the internetand have seen people asking for help and getting solutions with pretty much the exact same problem.  Only thing is everyone I've seen with this problem is a Macbook user and not an iMac user.  I assume that's why none of of the things that helped them are helping me.  I did the PRAM reset which did nothing.  I gently poked my headphone jack with a toothpick which did nothing.  I went into my Audio Midi Setup and verified that my in and out formats are set to 44100.0 Hz.  Don't know what else to do.  Someone.  Anyone.  Please.  Help!!  Thank you.

  • Sound just dies and requires a restart

I sometimes have to frequently switch between using my headphones and the MBP's internal speakers. Often enough to be very frustrating, the sound just dies and refuses to come back on when I make a switch like this. Settings tell me everything is all right but the only thing that fixes this problem is a restart.
I am getting sick of restarting my MBP ...

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405

  • Imac sounds are "messy" and "fuzzy"

Sp I,m not happy with the sounds on my IMac (21.5",late 2010,3.06mhz I3)...I tried ( just to test) Boom and Bongiovi DPS audio devices and then the sound started to get fuzzy...I have removed them now both, but the sounds aren't good...I have Creative Gigaworks t20-speakers (through headphones connection).I may have messed up the audio- & midi settings so what are the Original settings for my Imac ? Could the audio devices (boosters) have damaged the speakers ? This sound problem is especially with Itunes,I know prefre to play my music through DJAY 'cause it sounds better.Sorry,I don't know quite how to explain this, but this bothers me...Any help and tips wellcome,THANK YOU !

Still no solution...Is there anything to do in Audio-midi settings ? Is it normal that it shows "Aggregate-audio-device" in the listing ? There shouldn't be any extra devices anymore....What are the default settings ? Getting desperade...

    Hello Michael,
I would recommend creating a new test user to see if the issue persists:
Isolating an issue by using another user account
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4053
How to troubleshoot OS X user accounts
This process involves creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.
Create a new standard or admin user account in Users & Groups preferences. See this video, or this article for instructions for OS X Lion. See this article for instructions for OS X Mountain Lion.
Optional: If you have any specific files you wish to test with, copy (don't move) those items to the /Users/Shared folder in the Finder.
Log out of your current user account by choosing Log Out from the Apple () menu.
Log in with the new account you created.
Attempt to reproduce the issue you were seeing in your regular user account.
Note: If you were using any specific settings that the issue depends on, such as using a specific email account, iCloud account, and so forth, then you should set up that account in System Preferences. For email and most other settings you should be able to set them up easily in the Mail, Contacts & Calendars System Preference pane. If you copied any files to the /Users/Shared folder that you need for testing, you would want to copy them to the desktop (or other applicable locations) of the test account.
Important: After you have completed testing, log out of the test account by by choosing Log Out from theApple () menu.
Log in as your regular account.
After you have completed all testing with the test user account, you may wish to delete it. You can delete an account in the Users & Groups pane of System Preferences (Accounts preferences in Mac OS X v10.5 and 10.6) by simply selecting it and clicking the minus ("-") button below the account list. Note: Prior to deleting a test account, make sure you are completely done with it. If you have files in the Guest User you wish to keep, you should copy them to the /Users/Shared folder .
    Take care,
    Sterling

Nothing to do with the download; you need to open Adobe Reader once after the install is complete, and accept the EULA.

    Hi Keith2war,
Follow the suggestions listed below for a possible fix:
Method 1: Let’s run the “Audio Troubleshooter” from the following article and check if it helps.

"The troubleshooting audio playback did not help, it says it cannot find any problems.  Windows 7 says I have a "High Definition Audio Device" sound card with no question mark.  When I right click on the sound card and click properties under the general tab device status says "This device is working properly."  This computer is an all-in-one imac therefore it has built in speakers however i tried pluging in speakers and they make almost no sound.  In addition when I have them plug in when runnning mac snow leopard it make an ok amount of sound just not as much as the computers built in speakers.  When I have them plug in when running wwindows 7 their volumn is max out with almost no sound.  Windows 7 says I have a "High Definition Audio Device" sound card but i was wondering if its mistaken and the sound card has a different name but this is speculation.  The windows 7 thinks the sound driver/card has the most up to date software. This is a common problem when installing Windows on a Mac.
AFAIA, you'll need to i nstall W7 specific audio drivers on the W7 partition.
However you may be better asking this question on an Apple forum.

Also while you are at trying to fine a answer, this mac has a camera and other things, how do i test everything to see if they work on both sides.

I tried searching through the other questions here is a question if answer well help answer the first?
How do I figure out what is my sound driver is called?  I think Windows calls it High Definition Audio Device however something about the windows is mistaken because I have no sound.  But when on the mac side I do not know where to look either.   If I can find out what the sound driver is called then I can fined a update download.  The other similar questions that were answered suggested that the sound driver needed updated.

    Reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Sound just quit today

Mac Pro just quit making any sounds.  I've restarted, checked all connections, and I can't get it to make a peep.  Everything I can find when I search relates to MacBook Pro's not Mac Pro desktop machines.
I've checked the Sound control panel, and it's set to "line out".  I have external speakers hooked up through the jack on the back of the machine.  It was working fine this morning, and midday it just stopped working.
    Any ideas?
    Tks
    Butch

There are a few things you can try, first of restart the phone (hold the lock button untill you see the bar then slide to power off).
Erase all settings from Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings.
Backup and restore via iTunes on a computer.
There is a reason it costs a little more to get it repaired through apple. All apple repairs are covered by a 3 month repair warranty for things exactly like this. You may still be able to get it fixed by apple but they dont always accept devices with third party tampering.

I have just finished the upgradation to an iOS 6.1.3 and have lost sound in Music and Videos. I am using an iPhone 4S. My iPhone doesn't produce sound when playing Youtube or local camera videos. However ringtones and notifications sound works fine.It is quite strange as well. Have you encountered this issue before? If yes then what's the solution?

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.
turning of locator and the push notifications from facebook--they have a lot!

I've had MS Office:mac 2011 on my imac for around 18 months now.  Outlook has just disappeared and when I find the file and open it it tells me that there is a problem and I may need to re-install it.  I've just done this using the installation disc which, then said the installation had been successful.
Outlook is still not working.  Can anyone please advise me on what to do next.

Remove MS Office 2011 completely (here are instructions) and reinstall it.
It's not a simple or fast process but it is important to follow all of the steps in order to get all the files that Office scatters around. This will not affect your data files, only MS Office and its preferences.

(I have just looked in Timemachine which I had operating, but it did not seem to have any temp files in it at all - not sure what it would be useful for then).

Question asked and answered several times.
If you didn't save, nothing is recoverable.
iWork apps don't create temp files so, as far as you on't save something, Time Machine can't archive it.
