"iMac.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error(null))
My time capsule backups of my iMac to the time capsule has not worked since Nov 11. I think I may have turned it off at that time because the frequent updates were slowing down my iMac. Since then I've upgraded the RAM. When I turned on the Time Capsule back-ups, however, I keep getting an error message:
"The backup disk image "/Volumes/My Time Capsule/My iMac.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error(null)).
I don't have a disk for my current Operating system, which is OS X 10.9.2. I have downloaded my last several upgrades thru the Apple Store.
I have gone thru some of the simple steps rebooting everything. I started the Terminal and gave the commands that Linc Davis suggested in Oct 2013, article with same message, but (error(-1)). I got the lines below:
I really don't know what to do during a safe mode restart.
Can anybody help me to get my Time machine working again?
Thanks for any help,
docnsg

First, if this is your only backup, you must make another full backup to a locally-attached external hard drive. One backup is never enough to be safe, and backing up over a network is less reliable than backing up locally. Then try each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.
1. Restart the backup device. You can do that by disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord.
2. Hold down the option key and select Verify Backups from the TM menu in the menu bar (not the Dock icon.) This operation may take several hours. If the menu-bar icon (a clock that runs backwards) isn't showing, check Show Time Machine in menu bar in the preferences.
3. Erase the backup device. With a Time Capsule, you do that from within the AirPort Utility application; see its built-in help for details. All backups will be lost, so don't do this until you've backed up to another device. After erasing, select the TC again as a backup destination in the TM preference pane. The first backup should be made over a wired connection, if possible.

how to fix this error message The backup disk image “/Volumes/AirPort Disk/FARES DEL VALLE’s iMac.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).
The troubleshooting C17 is the specific article.

This is generally a Lion error.. and you will need 5.6 utility to get access to the disk area.
So download the real utility. Run it instead of v6 toy version.
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Go to the manual setup, disk page and click on disconnect all users.. that will unmount all users connected to the disk and allow it to start working. But there are a number of other issues that are possible cause. Pondini lists some of them. -
For the past several days, I have been getting this message during backups:
Time Machine could not complete the back up. The backup disk image "Volumes/Data/bhoppy2's iMac.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error-1). When I click on the 'help' icon on the message, it reverts to a blank page, and I cannot find anything online regarding the term 'sparsebundle.' In addition, I cannot access previous backups any longer.

Hi, I have backed up 2 IMACs and one Mac Book Pro but for some reason, the 3rd IMAC come up with this problem: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Anthony’s iMac.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1). Why? The computer system is up to date and I have had no issue with the other computers, just this one.
Many thanks

I got the error message that my Time Capsule "iMac.sparsebundle could not be accessed (error - 1). It backed up fine yesterday. Anyone else have this problem?
If it helps I am getting the same message, I have reported it to Apple and they have someone working on it. Mine stopped backing up after having a new hard drive installed. I can however back up to the same time capsule from my laptop.

If that is the case simply reboot the TC.. or if that fails, reboot the whole network, restarting in correct order..

I have two Imacs backing up to a time capsule and I keep getting this error on one of them The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/APPLE’s iMac.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1). How do I resolve this?

I keep getting "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Macintosh.sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error (null)).
I have updated the firmware on the Time Capsule and unplugged and replugged it in after waiting more than 10 seconds.
I cannot access the sparsebundle to repair from the Disk Utility.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? It sounds like you have already tried some of pondini's suggestions..
But C17 is the main one, even if the error is a different number..

Mavericks in particular is having issues with the TC..
So I strongly recommend a full factory reset of the TC.
Make sure all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. See C9 for more info.
Because Mavericks now uses SMB by default for network protocol, it is worthwhile mounting the TC manually using AFP.
In finder use the top menu, Go, Connect to Server.
Type in as follows,
AFP://TCname
Replace TCname with your actual TC name..
If the computer fails to find the TC, try again using the full domain name.
AFP://TCname.local is the standard one. The TC opts for local although you now have no place to set it in the airport utility.
If you still have trouble tell me.
Once the computer locates the network resources, it will ask for a password, public by default. Type in your password if you changed it or public. And store it in the keychain.
Now reset TM.. see A4.
And point the TM to the TC again which you have mounted.
See if that helps. -
I recently obtained the 3 TB time capsule and after setting it up I have backed up using time machine and after a few days it gives this error. I erased the drive and started over but the same thing happened. I do not see the error message that I get listed in the articles. Any ideas?
Error message - The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Ence’s iMac.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).The best "articles" by far are those provided by Time Capsule and Time Machine guru Pondini.

Time Machine could not complete the backup.
The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Name's iMacsparsebundle" could not be accessed (error -1 )I checked the pondini fixes and ended up doing the following - in case this could help someone else with OSX Lion and Time Capsule... http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
First, I downloaded and used Airport Utility 5.6 instead of 6.1 - BTW, I had to attempt download and installation THREE times before the program actually installed. Be persistant.
Pondini #5: It's possible some names (of all things!) may be a problem. See item C9. I had to re-name my Mac, Time Capsule, network, etc... to remove all apostrophes and spaces.
Pondini #7: If you have WD SmartWare installed on Lion, it's not compatible, per RoaringApps, and there are reports it can cause this problem as well. Use Western Digital's uninstaller, or delete the app from /Applications and the files com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist and com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist from /Library/LaunchDaemons. There may also be a file in Library/Application Support.
I then had to shut down computer, unplug Time Capsule, unplug modem; plug everything in again, then reboot computer; then had to go to Apple- System Preferences- Network- and reselect my Time Capsule to connect to WiFi again.
Then opened Time Machine preferences again and attempted back up - it worked! -
Installed another new Time Capusle, # Terabytes. Shut off wireless only connected to time capusle by cat. 5 cabel and to correct port . But darn sparsbundle error has surfaced. Had Apple support have me redo the entire back up which worked but after two days of working correctly this occurred again.
Thoughts?Thought I would update this myself. I bought the new 3 T erabyte product and after removing the western digital software for my extra back up disk for photos it worked. Key is do not run the smartware from western digital not needed in the mac environment and a problem when running the Time Capsule. So likely my previous 2 Terabyte Time capsule was not the issue. I think the smartware software took time to be known as an issue since I had contacted apple twice before and only on the third time did someone suggest looking at this. Welcome to the evolving world of technology.
