Hello. When I connect my imac Start, as usual, comes the start signal and then the white screen with the load signal then nothing happens. What could be the problem?
Presuming you get the chime, most of your Mac hardware is working and has passed the first part of the power-on self-test.
If the screen comes on, basic graphics is working.
The dark gray Apple is not present inside the Mac -- it must be loaded from a boot device. If the dark gray Apple appears, at least one of your boot devices has some capabilities. The flower petal/gear moves while Darwin is initializing and loading. If it stops immediately, something is terribly wrong.
When the screen turns blue, Mac OS X has loaded and your graphics card transitions to Interrupt-driven operation. LoginWindow task draws the login screen, and Mac OS X is ready for login.
What could be the problem depends on where in the process it stops, and whether the power light is blinking. -
I am having problems getting my imac started.
I am having problems getting my imac started. It begins to load, takes along time, then shuts down.
I do not have a disk either to re install the platform.
Any ideas on what I could do or try?
I tried to start it in recovery mode. I pressed the shift key, held it, tapped it.....and I could not get it to register.
The computer carried on trying to load with the loading bar displayed.
Does this suggested, Internal HD failure? Thanks for replying Paul.
I ran check as suggested.
Seems to be ok.
Still no change with the start up issue.
("Do I have back up to restore from?") Possibably , not sure.
Any other suggestions would be welcome. -
Sometimes my iMac starts up with white lettering acrossthe screen on a black background - when it's switched off for a few seconds it starts up ok. Can anyone tell me why this happens ?
I have read on here that a PRAM reset can cure this problem:
Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys. -

Major imac blueberry problem, need help
Hi, someone came to me with an imac that had a black screen. I hooked it up to a monitor and was able to see the HD and it seemed that they had updated the software to OSX and I suspect not the firmware. I tried checking using OS9 and the imac starts to come on and then immediately stops, spins up for 5 seconds and then shuts down. if I press the start button on the front the light will come on but nothing happens. Is there a way to get this machine to come on and stay on long enough to update the firmware? I have the external monitor plugged in but nothing happens, it doesn't stay on long enough to do anything. I've reset the power manager but no luck.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
derekHey Derek,
Yup sounds like the classic firmware trap. Here's the classic site to solve the problem:

Why has my iMac started to be slow logging on
Why has my iMac started to be slow when first logging on, is it anything to do with me upgrading to Mavericks from 10.7, and is there any way it can be rectified?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

My iMac starts up and then shuts itself down during the boot up process. it shuys down half way through the Apple logo appearing. any ideas how to fix?
Hi daveormond,
I'm sorry to hear you are having these issues with your iMac. If you continue to have issues with your Mac shutting down part way through the boot up process, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following articles helpful (given your description, it sounds like it could be either issue, or a combination of both):
Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup - Apple Support
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem." - Apple Support

My iMac starts, but won't get past the loading screen?
My iMac starts up, but won't even get past the white screen with the Apple logo.
It kept giving me black screens, and would not start in safety mode. After command + option + p + r, the black screens stopped coming, but it still won't get past the loading screen, if I let it load long enough the Apple logo is replaced by a "denied" symbol but that is the only thing that happens. By hitting command + d, I was told nothing is wrong. When pressing command + r and going to disk utility, it found an issue while verifying and repairing. At first it stated "invalid journal" but now it only says to reinstall everything and that the problem couldn't be solved. I cannot mount the harddrive, and Time Machine just searches for copies without getting anywhere. When I try installing OS X (Mavericks) again, the harddrive doesn't even show up. What do I do?The HD sounds like it has crashed, take it into your local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP), if you bought AppleCare this will be covered. If you don't have an Apple Store in your area and don't know of any AASPs then please click https://locate.apple.com/country to begin finding one.

Why does my imac start up in safe mode
hi, imac starts up in safe mode. not every time, only when progress bar appears at startup.
I have had the Logic board replaced under warranty but it still started in safe mode.
sometimes when it has started the wifi symbol is missing and no wifi, other times the sound is not there and the symbol is missing on the top bar.
I then have to restart and it comes up good. sometimes the desktop top bar is not there until I press the mouse and then it appears.
don't know what to do, any Ideas anybody? How often does this happen? Do you have automatic updating enabled in Software Update? If so, then it's possible those were firmware updates being installed, not startup in safe mode. In a safe mode startup you are initially prompted for your password before proceeding past login.
If a firmware update was happening then the computer will restart on its own. If you interrupt the process then the update isn't installed, so it will try again on the next restart.
Safe mode is initiated by holding down the SHIFT key at restart. It should not occur without user intercession. -
my imac starts up with a white screen, gray apple and spinning gear and is frozen on that screen. What can I do?
Start your iMac with the original DVD that camera with the system. Then open disk utility and repair your hard drive, also repair your permissions.

My imac starts with a white screen, then goes to black with a small white line blinking in the top left corner of the screen. Any ideas? Thanks.
Try starting your iMac with the original DVD that came with the machine then launch disk utility to repair your hard drive.

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer was running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier and you reach the third set of steps, insert a Mac OS X install disk.
