IMac Start up problems, and installation problems

Apple iMac
I've recently purchased a copy of 10.6.3 as a substitute for my 10.6 disc.
On trying to re-install my internal hard drive, after it wouldn't boot.
All Documents etc are on an external 1TB External Drive, also my documents are on my MBP.
1) Been trying to install for well over an hour, and still it says 28mins?
2) Tried to clone my MacBookPro hd over, via Firewire, and waited nearly 12+ hours to no avail. Going down the route with Carbon Copy Cloner, and also Disk Utility, and even tried to install via Firewire cable, on that occasion it got to 45 minutes left, and all went quiet.
3) Have run disk utility loads of times to check the integrity of the drive, it says Verified,
4) Have now tried to reinstall with the original disks that came with the mac, after reformatting the hard drive, and selecting my options, the installer starts, and when reboots, take ages, white screen, I don't even get the prompt to insert the the second cd.
5) On this basis, a) Is my hard drive failing
b) Is my problem the superdrive.

You cannot install an earlier version of OS X than the machine came with that is why your installation won't work. The problem probably is that your Original Install Disc that came with the machine is a later version than 10.6.3.
If you are trying to determine if your HD is failing there are a couple of things you can check. First in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilties - Disk Utility) check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the HD. If it says anything but VERIFIED yes your HD is in trouble. The next thing you can do is run Apple Hardware Test. Here is an Apple Advice Letter that will provide instructions. Remember you will need the ORIGINAL Install Disc that came with the computer. Run AHD in extended mode to be the most thorough.

It would also help to advise us exactly what are you trying to achieve, then we can advise you.

  • Intel based iMac start up problem

Sometimes when I turn on my intel based iMac instead of seeing the apple symbol it shows a symbol of a flashing folder with a question mark in it.
I turn it off and wait a few minutes and turn it back on and it starts up correctly.
Anyone else have this problem? What does it mean?
    Thanks

It means that the computer can't find a valid drive to boot from. Try starting from your Leopard DVD and repairing your disk and permissions.

  • Imac start up problem

For about 3 month now, My Imac hasn't been able to turn on normally. Back in September I turned my computer on like I have done countless time and it will only get to the blue screen and nothing more. I used to beable to un-plug the power and wait a few seconds then plug it back and it would start normally. As the mnths have gone by it take anywhere from 3-5 trys unplugging it and turning it on for it to fully start. No other issue have appeared, I've have done every test that I can do via-home IE original disk check etc. I've been told it could be the logicboard, I checked the Caps and none seem to have bust which is known problem in this generation of Imac. I also there were also power supply issues, but without any more symptoms other than the starting issue, I'm not sure if it's just start of failing logicboard, and why does the unplugging temperately fix the problem, Which will last a few hrs, where I can turn in on normally but if left over night it will be stuck again.

It could be the power supply, if disconnecting and reconnecting the power cord makes it work temporarily. Disconnecting the power cord is resetting the hardware, so you can attempt another startup.
If you have not already, be sure to try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and then resetting SMU (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
Be sure to follow the procedure precisely. When you reconnect the power cord, if you have been using a crowded or old power strip (surge suppressor), try connecting it directly to a wall outlet by itself, at least initially. When you power it up, have everything disconnected except for the power cord. If it starts up properly, connect only your keyboard and mouse. Use it that way for a while, and note if this problem recurs. If all is well, reconnect your other peripheral (USB/FireWire) devices, one-by-one if possible. If the problem returns at some point, note what device was added last. It may be faulty or conflicting with the iMac. USB and FireWire devices can interfere with sleep, wake, shutdown, and startup.
If the problem recurs, even after the SMU reset and attempting to start up with nothing but the power cord connected, it is very likely to be a hardware issue that require some type of repair.

  • IMac start up failure and/or screen crash.....

    Hi
    My iMac 2,16, 24" 2GB, 10.5.x has some problems.
The ram is new, the system is new installed day.
Please click here to see whats going ....
    http://gallery.me.com/a.rieger#100175
Is this a mainboard error or from the graphic card?
    Thanx Andreas

Run the Apple Hardware Test on the Install Disc 1 that came with your 24" Late 2006 iMac.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Or TechTool if you purchased Apple Care, if so your iMac should still be covered.

  • Imac Starting To Slow And Increase Hard Drive Paging

    Hello,
I have been noticing that my computers seems to be getting slower, and also I am noticing much more hard drive paging, to the point where it is a concern. I do not do any graphics or high intensity CPU usage on this computer. I have run the disk utility from the Mac, and no issues found. Is this a sign that the hard drive might be failing? Or do I just reinstall operating from scratch? If hard drive failing, on this computer, can I put one of the new solid state drives?
    Thanks JR

Hello. When I connect my imac Start, as usual, comes the start signal and then the white screen with the load signal then nothing happens. What could be the problem?

Presuming you get the chime, most of your Mac hardware is working and has passed the first part of the power-on self-test.
If the screen comes on, basic graphics is working.
The dark gray Apple is not present inside the Mac -- it must be loaded from a boot device. If the dark gray Apple appears, at least one of your boot devices has some capabilities. The flower petal/gear moves while Darwin is initializing and loading. If it stops immediately, something is terribly wrong.
When the screen turns blue, Mac OS X has loaded and your graphics card transitions to Interrupt-driven operation. LoginWindow task draws the login screen, and Mac OS X is ready for login.
What could be the problem depends on where in the process it stops, and whether the power light is blinking.

  • Start Up and Installation Problems

Hey all, sorry if this is a repost, but I'm running out of troubleshooting options and patience. I have a Powerbook G4 and just participated in the battery recall, after which I've started having these problems. I followed the directions for replacing the battery; drained the old one until the computer slept, removed the old battery effectively powering down the computer, replaced with new battery, then tried to restart. However, now when the computer restarts, instead of the Mac OSX and progress bar, I get the circle with a slash through it on the grey screen. I can't remember the technical name for it, but I followed some simple troubleshooting, and nothing is working. I opened up disc utility from the install CD, and the first time, my HD showed up, but as a read only disc, so I wasn't able to perform any disc repair. I ran hardware test, and it all came back fine. Then I started up using an old HD as a firewire drive, which worked fine, but when I tried to use disc utility from there, the program froze, and wouldn't find any discs mounted. I tried disc utility from the install CD again, and same result. No discs were found and the program froze in the search process. So, trying to run a reinstallation from the install CD, I get to the point where I select the drive on which to install, and no drives are listed. If I plug in my external drive, it pops up right away. And now, running off the external drive, if I go to My Computer, that external drive is the only one listed. I can't find the directory for the hard drive in my computer. It's as if it just disappeared, except for the fact that if I hold down the option key when starting up, it shows up as a Mac OSX drive that can be started up from, and the hardware test for mass storage came back as passed. So, if anyone has any ideas for me, I'd be greatly appreciative. Thanks for reading!
    Sean

  • Start up problems, including from installation disc.

Hello everyone in the Apple ether, I need your help!
I have a powerpc based iMac G5 at home that I set up for my mum to use once I bought my macbook. I finally managed to win her over with talks of how much easier it would be for her to manage her photos in iPhoto, and everything was going really well. I recently came home after my final year at uni and some travelling to find that the computer is taking a long time to start up. This can be in both the grey apple loading screen but also once it logs in it can take a long time to display anything over than the desktop background, and even once it displays other items any attempt to open anything just results in a spinning wheel icon. At the worst case it has taken about 20 minutes to get going.
Once it has fully booted, the machine doesn't appear to be working any slower than normal. I tried using disk utility in mac OSX and verifying permissions etc and that didn't do anything. I then tried googling the problem and came across this article on the apple web site. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Starting in Safe Mode did not resolve the issue so after backing everything up I tried starting from the installation disc. This is not something I have ever done before and as someone that never really delves beneath the surface of her machines I was a bit scared of doing it. But I put the disc in and restarted and held down C just after I heard the chime, and shortly after it all went wrong. The screen went grey and all I could see was the image you get when it crashes (you know, the power sign with text over it saying you need to restart) with lines of code all down the left of the screen. I took a photo of the screen on my camera so can give details of the code if you need them. The last line said
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 8.8.3: Wed Oct 18 22:00:38 PDT 2006; root:xnu-792.15.4.obj-4/RELEASE_PPC
    panic: We are hanging here...
After a few minutes on this screen the fan started working overtime and after about 5 minutes of that I just turned it off using the power button on the back. The machine has since started up normally (ie slowly) but is working fine.
So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to fix the slow start up problem without booting from my install disc, or indeed if anyone could suggest why I can't boot from my install disc? Thanks very much for your time and help.

It appears you experienced a kernel panic which is hardware related. A few suggestions for you to try:
Except for the keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from the computer & try the suggestions mentioned in the following:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106805 Mac OS X: "Broken folder" icon, prohibitory sign, or *kernel panic* when computer starts
    User Tips: Kernel Panics
    ==============
Boot up from your Tiger or Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose *"Disk Utility"* from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the *"repair disk"* button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and run *repair permissions* from Disk Utility.
    * If Disk Utility (from the install DVD or HD)is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

  • Start-up problems on 3.06GHz iMac...

    Hi Guys,
I bought a second iMac 24 3.06GHz and am having a few start-up issues with it.
I hit the power button and the logo comes up as usual. Get the spinning wheel
thing and then the screen turns blur - again with spinning wheel, then wheel goes, comes
back, goes, comes back. That's as far as it goes...
So I hit the power button again and then it starts fine.
I've repaired permissions several times and keep getting the same set of messages...
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/setregion" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner "
has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Warning: SUID file
    "System/Library/Printers/IOMs/LPRIOM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/LPRIOMHelper" has
been modified and will not be repaired.
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x ,
    they are drwxrwxr-x .
Any clues there to tell me what might be causing the issue? It runs faultlessly once started up.
    Cheers for any help!
    Rich

    HI Rich,
The SUID warning... no worries go here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
At the bottom it says: Resolution
You can safely ignore these messages. They are accurate but not a cause for concern.
But it sounds like you might have a start up issue. If you can get it to boot to the Desktop, go to System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items and delete any apps listed there.
Also, if you can, run the Apple Hardware Test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
You need the original install disk for this procedure:
"Apple Hardware Test is located on the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 and should be included with your computer."
Follow these instructions to verify the hard disk for errors:
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
Select your disk, and click First Aid.
    Click Verify Disk.
If the disk needs repairs, do one of the following:
Insert your Mac OS X Install disc in your computer’s optical drive or an optical drive connected to your computer, and then restart your computer. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator, which looks like a spinning gear.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it, choose Utilities > Disk Utility, click First Aid, and then click Repair Disk. When Disk Utility is finished, from the Menu Bar select Utilities/Startup Disk. Select MacintoshHD 10.5 in the window and click: Restart
If you don’t have a Mac OS X Install disc, restart your computer while holding down the Shift key. As your computer starts up, it performs a disk check similar to the one Disk Utility performs.
Checking a hard disk to see if it’s going to fail
You can check the health of your hard disk by checking its Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) status in Disk Utility. Most disk drives include S.M.A.R.T. hardware. Developed by IBM, S.M.A.R.T. hardware allows hard disks to test themselves for potential problems.

  • Update and installation problems

I am having issues with Creative Cloud updates and installations.
None of my Apps will update. I am prompted to update, I click the update button, Cloud says "updating software" but all attempts stop at 0%.
Similar issues Installing Apps. Installations start but all stop at 90%. No error messages at all.
This is extremely frustrating and all my Apps are in need of updates to fix minor bugs which are effecting my workflow.
    Can you help?

  • I am having problems getting my imac started.

I am having problems getting my imac started. It begins to load, takes along time, then shuts down.
I do not have a disk either to re install the platform.
Any ideas on what I could do or try?
I tried to start it in recovery mode. I pressed the shift key, held it, tapped it.....and I could not get it to register.
The computer carried on trying to load with the loading bar displayed.
Does this suggested, Internal HD failure?

    Thanks for replying Paul.
    I ran check as suggested.
    Seems to be ok.
Still no change with the start up issue.
("Do I have back up to restore from?") Possibably , not sure.
Any other suggestions would be welcome.

  • Start up problems and screen shake

    Dear all
I have started experiencing problems when I start up my iMac. Prior to the Blue Apple Screen appearing on startup I get a fuzzy grey screen with thin lines moving up and down the screen. This lasts for about 5 seconds then clears when the Blue Apple screen comes on. It never used to do this.
Once I am logged in my screen tends to have a series of small dots (like pixels) forming short lines across the screen. These change each time I log on.
Also, when this has happened the whole screen goes 'fuzzy' for a few seconds before clearing again. This can re-occur at any moment.
This problem does not always happen but maybe three out of four start ups. If the problem at start up does not occur then I do not experience the fuzzy screen.
Any ideas? I am very concerned that something critical is up.
I have done the most recent updates.
ps I am not a computer whiz!
    Regards
    Adam

    Hi Adam,
This is exactly what is happening to my iMac which will be repaired this week. It is critical but it is due to a known fault on some of the iMacs.
    Go to http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/
Even if your iMac is out of the 1 year warrenty it will be covered for this.
