  • IMAC starting veryyyyy slow....

I have a 21,5" iMAC mid 2010, and I noticed that it took more and more time every time I tried to start the computer when I had the Snow Leopard SO. At that time it reached up to 20 to 30 minutes to start from the moment I pushed the power on button, until the desk was available.
The I moved to Mountain Lion SO when it was released, and the problem seemed to disappear, since it began to start quickly again, as in the beginning.
But unfortunately the problem is coming again, because it began to increase the starting time every time, and now it is quite worse than before, because last time that I intended to start it took ¡nearly 2 hours! At the end it finally starts... Once the computer is in operation I do not notice anything wrong in normal operation but it is clear there is something wrong. I normally leave the iMAC in stand by (so I do not have to restart every time) and in this way I can get inmediately my desk by pressing any key and I don't need to wait so long.
I tried to clean up the computer with apps like Magican or CCleaner, but it didn't work. I did'n find anything wrong apparently in the initial programs, SO, etc...
Please, HELP....What can I do to make the start time quicker as it should be?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alejandro

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Startup will be slow, but it shouldn't take two hours. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Upgrading my intel iMac to internal SSD and running 1TB external drive from firewire 800 for mass storage while still using a second external drive for backups...my goal-speed with a SSD, to still have 1TB of room for everything i have now..possible?

I seem to kill HD's every two years...the last two i've installed were WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200rpm 3.5" drives. The speed gains over  stock drives have been remarkable. I don't blame the drives for the failures, my machines are up and running 16 hours a day, every day, year round. They die from 'mileage' so to speak...i assume...there's no viral acvtivity or questionable downloads to gunk things up...just lots of work.
I have my third new drive ready to install in my intel based iMac...but i've had a thought...I want to install a SSD in my iMac for the speed gain (and recent price drops)...for standard storage i want to use this new WD Caviar Black 1TB in an external drive bay and connect via firewire 800 for storing everything except the OS and my most commonly used software...am i crazy? will the firewire 800 external drive negate the speed gained with an internal SSD??
I have four iMacs in my office, and one at home. I buy second hand and install new drives and boost memory. I'm going to do this on my 'home' machine...if it works out well i want to upgrade the other three this way...but first i need to know if i'm just dreaming, or will it really make a difference? or even possible??
    Thanks!

The SSD gives great bootup and Application launch speed. I think it also speeds up the video rendering a bit, I do all that on the SSD and then move the finished project to the external drives. As far as the speed for the external drives they are quick enough for viewing video and the file transfer rate is good. I had initially put the SSD into an external cradle (FW800) and the system was faster than on the internal drive. I only got a 1.5GBs SATA drive, perhaps yours could benefit from the 3GBs. I know the 6GBs would be too fast and costs a lot more, even the MacPros need special hookups to make use of the 6GBs.

  • Start up programs and running programs folder??

Where can I go to disable start up programs and view any programs that are running in the background??

The checkbox only has to do with hiding and not hiding an app on startup--although results vary.
Deleting it, on the other hand, should have stopped it from loading.
Check in you user/Library/LaunchAgents or user/Library/StartupItems for anything Entourage or Microsoft. However, I don't know why they would put something in there if they are using the Login Items.

  • Imac Starting To Slow And Increase Hard Drive Paging

    Hello,
I have been noticing that my computers seems to be getting slower, and also I am noticing much more hard drive paging, to the point where it is a concern. I do not do any graphics or high intensity CPU usage on this computer. I have run the disk utility from the Mac, and no issues found. Is this a sign that the hard drive might be failing? Or do I just reinstall operating from scratch? If hard drive failing, on this computer, can I put one of the new solid state drives?
    Thanks JR

  • Imac starting very slow

Since a few day my iMac is starting very slowly (at least 5 to 10 min). I don't know if I have done something wrong or my childrens...
Soft is up to date. I've got a HDD external for Time Machine but I have the same trouble with or without.
    Only one internal HDD.
The model is 20 inch from early 2008, running under OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63).
    Thaks for your help.

    Hi..
Not enough free space on the disk can slow the system down.
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
Try removing login items. Open System Preferences > Users & Groups then select the Login Items tab. Remove all items.
And go to HD > Library > StartupItems. Remove all items from the StrartupItems folder.
    Check the startup disk.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Be aware, OS X Recovery requires a high speed broadband connection.
And backup all your important files before repairing or restoring OS X just in case.

  • IMac Start up problems, and installation problems

    Apple iMac
I've recently purchased a copy of 10.6.3 as a substitute for my 10.6 disc.
On trying to re-install my internal hard drive, after it wouldn't boot.
All Documents etc are on an external 1TB External Drive, also my documents are on my MBP.
    1) Been trying to install for well over an hour, and still it says 28mins?
    2) Tried to clone my MacBookPro hd over, via Firewire, and waited nearly 12+ hours to no avail. Going down the route with Carbon Copy Cloner, and also Disk Utility, and even tried to install via Firewire cable, on that occasion it got to 45 minutes left, and all went quiet.
    3) Have run disk utility loads of times to check the integrity of the drive, it says Verified,
    4) Have now tried to reinstall with the original disks that came with the mac, after reformatting the hard drive, and selecting my options, the installer starts, and when reboots, take ages, white screen, I don't even get the prompt to insert the the second cd.
    5) On this basis, a) Is my hard drive failing
    b) Is my problem the superdrive.

You cannot install an earlier version of OS X than the machine came with that is why your installation won't work. The problem probably is that your Original Install Disc that came with the machine is a later version than 10.6.3.
If you are trying to determine if your HD is failing there are a couple of things you can check. First in Disk Utility (Applications - Utilties - Disk Utility) check the S.M.A.R.T. status of the HD. If it says anything but VERIFIED yes your HD is in trouble. The next thing you can do is run Apple Hardware Test. Here is an Apple Advice Letter that will provide instructions. Remember you will need the ORIGINAL Install Disc that came with the computer. Run AHD in extended mode to be the most thorough.

It would also help to advise us exactly what are you trying to achieve, then we can advise you.

  • My iMac G5 powers on and runs fine for 20 to 60 minutes then locks up and all fans run at 100%

I thought my Hard drive had finally crashed and while replacing it (1TB Hitachi) I also replace the 512MB of RAM with 2 x 1Gb sticks of Crucial Memory.  While re-loading 10.4 the system locked up again and the fans started running at 100%.  I tried 3 more times and the same thing.  With in 20 to 30 minutes the system locks up and the fans roar.  I was told buy a friend the PSU had bad caps (all the MB caps look perfect) and I should replace it.  I purchased a used PSU from Ebay and this time I got the entire OS installed and 8 of the first 9 undates and then, it did it again.  I powered the iMac off and rebooted and now I get no bottom tool bar and in 50 to 60 minutes the same thing.  Please help, I am certified on Dell and HP but this iMac is driving me nuts.

Take a closer look at the logic board caps.  They dont have be totally blown open to be bad.
If you look closely and see that they are bulging just a small bit they are BAD.
These symptoms sound like bad logic board caps.

  • Mac won't start following change of permissions. I have started In recovery and run repair disk and reset permissions to all disks inc backups. What do I do now to get the mac up and running without loosing thousands of pics and all other data? I

The problems occurred after photoshop elements said I did not have the necessary permissions to save changes to a photo. I then allowed all to permissions to all disks, I have three external hard drives but I cannot restore from any as they all appear to have some kind of problem. I have repaired all disks in recovery mode and verified all inc mac hd. All permissions are repaired and all disks are saying repaired. So where do I go from here to get the mac back on running mavericks without loosing thousands of photos and all other data ?
Do I need to reinstall Mac OS ?
The only options I get to reinstall is mountain lion?.. I have been running the latest mavericks .?.
Do I reinstall and then update?
The external drives are not smart drives so how do I ensure I retain all my files?

your best option is to connect an external drive and reinstall OS X on that external to run the system from. then copy all your files over to the new install for safe keeping. then try doing a reinstall of Mavericks over the top of the current install on the internal drive and test.

  • IMac start up failure and/or screen crash.....

    Hi
    My iMac 2,16, 24" 2GB, 10.5.x has some problems.
The ram is new, the system is new installed day.
Please click here to see whats going ....
    http://gallery.me.com/a.rieger#100175
Is this a mainboard error or from the graphic card?
    Thanx Andreas

Run the Apple Hardware Test on the Install Disc 1 that came with your 24" Late 2006 iMac.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Or TechTool if you purchased Apple Care, if so your iMac should still be covered.

  • Imac 2012 start very slow

my imac start very slow. spend about 1:45 mim. i try a lot off things, but still not working. im on mavericks. thanks a lot.

Check your system Login/startup items in OS X System Preferences under the Accounts icon- Login items tab.
If you have more than 6 items trying to launch at startup, you need want to remove these apps from the automatic launch/startup list
    Add or remove automatic items
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
Select your user account, then click Login Items.
    Do one of the following:
Click Add below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.
If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete below the list on the right.

  • Can iMac boot and run SUSE Linux?

I have a requirement for an SLES 11 server. I really don't want to buy another machine for this so I was wondering if it was possible for an 2010 iMac C2D to boot and run SLES? What I would like to do is use an external FireWire drive as the boot & O/S device. Is that possible too?
My only other option is to create a Fusion image but I'm going to need 500 GB or more of disk space and I'd rather deal with that in a native environment.
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
No reason why you should not be able to do it using Firewire Target Disk Mode. Here's what you do:
    1. With both computers shut down connect both via firewire.
    2. Startup the Mini and hold down "T" key immediately after chime.
    3. Startup the PB and immediately after chime hold down Option key.
    4. Select second HDD icon on the screen and click on the right pointing arrow.
    5. Computer will boot from Mini's HDD.
Be sure to shut down PB completely before shutting down Mini.
Please do post back with an update or with further questions or comments.
    Cheers

  • Why my imac start with question mark sign on gray screen

need help with imac start up

Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer was running Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier and you reach the third set of steps, insert a Mac OS X install disk.

  • HT5639 if i use boot camp to establish windows on my Macbook pro can i then install a windows program and run it without another software ie parallels?

Can I use a windows program such as QuickBooks on my macbook pro 15inch with only using boot camp or do i need to have another program?

Boot Camp is everything you need to run a Windows application.
Boot Camp allows you to install Windows in a second volume, so you can start up there and run all your Windows apps without needing any Mac OS X app. It's true that OS X apps like Parallels or VMware Fusion allow you to use your Boot Camp partition in Mac OS X, but it looks like you don't want that

  • IMac starts running slow, randomly shuts off, and won't turn back on!

Last night, I was watching some YouTube videos about Swift programming and playing around on Xcode when my iMac (specs below) started to freeze between switching apps, creating files, and running my Xcode project. I tried cleaning it up using both CCleaner and OnyX. Neither of them helped. Today, I was about to run OnyX to see if it could do anything more and my iMac just shuts off. I change the outlet, still doesn't work. Go to another room and try that outlet, still doesn't work. It just sits there when I press the power button and does nothing. No sound, no startup, or anything.
    • I verified my hard-drive with Disk Utility before it shut off and it said it was OK.
    • I repaired permissions
    • I used OnyX's verification tool to verify the hard-drive a couple different ways, every way came back clear.
    iMac Specs
    Software OS X 10.10.3
    21.5-inch, Mid 2011
Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB
    1 TB SATA Disk
Also there was a storm while we were gone a couple days ago, maybe a surge or something? I'm not an expert so I wouldn't know. My brother's iMac (the one I'm posting this on) works fine though.

Try running an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
If you find you can't, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.  The evaluation will be free and then you should know what the problems are with your MBA.
    Ciao.
