IMac startup issues

Hi,
I have read through various similar issues but am having trouble diagnosing my exact problem. My iMac starts up but gets stuck on the apple logo with the spinning gear.
I can get into disk utility and when i verify/ repair the disk, no issues are apparent. I cannot do a start-up using the C key. I have a Windows bootcamp parttion which will not load either (black screen after the progress bar - 10 mins and counting). I have reinstalled the OS and restored using a time machine backup. Also safe boot takes me to the Apple logo again.
One time i managed to get a progress bar on the Apple loading screen but it didn't seem to move from about 5-10%.
Is it likely the hard drive is damaged?
Thanks,
Martyn

Martyn,
Apple is very specific about troubleshooting this, please carefully read and methodically follow the troubleshooting steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570

  • IMac Startup Issue: is my HDD broken? (I/O error)

    Hi everyone,
    The problem:
earlier today my 2010 iMac all of a sudden slowed down dramatically while I was surfing the web. I literally got the spinning ball every time i clicked the screen and launching new apps took about 20-40 seconds. I restarted the iMac twice but the issue did not go away.
    What I did so far:
Since I didn't know what to do, I looked for possible solutions online. I found most of these measures I've taken so far online. I'm aware that doing random things that people post on the internet without understanding the technical implications is probably not the smartes thing, but I've only tried solutions that people posted on the official apple support forums.
    1. I restarted the iMac twice.
    2. I cleared the cache using this command in the terminal app:
    cd ~/library/caches;rm -rfv *
    3. I restarted the iMac and held down the option-key, then selected the recovery (?) partition (my iMac's set to German and I'm trying to translate all the terms into English - sorry if I get some of them wrong). Afterwards I tried to verify & repair my Macintosh HD with the Disk Utility app, but it said the volume could not be verified and it could not be repaired (red error text), asking me to save all my files and format the volume.
    4. When I restarted the iMac again after that, I held down the option key again. Now I selected the Macintosh HD volume, but held down CMD+S before hitting enter. This brought up a black screen with a lot of text. I entered /sbin/fsck -fy , but all I got was a message saying disk0s2: I/O error.
    5. When I know try to regularly boot my iMac, I get the grey spinning wheel underneath the Apple logo, and a grey progress bar underneath it. This bar loads about 5%, then my HDD audibly "clicks" inside the iMac and it crashes, resulting in a black screen. What I find odd is that at the beginning I could restart the iMac normally, whereas now it crashes every time I try to boot. I'm afraid I actually made the problem worse...
    Question:
Now I understand that all of these signs point at some sort of hardware error, but as a last glimmer of hope I'd like to ask if there's anything else I could do, or if the underlying problem could also be of a different kind; maybe some sort of software problem? I'm afraid that's not the case, but as you can tell my technical knowledge is very limited and I'm pretty much at a loss here.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Imac startup issues- green vertical lines changing to grey screen

Help!  I think my 27" i7 iMac just died!
Yesterday morning, I had a kernal panic while using Safari.  Restarted, ran disk utility twice.  A bunch of "library shoyuld be r- instead of -rw" type errors that could not be repaired were found both times.
After second round of computer restart/disk utility, the computer started displaying green lines running vertically down the grey screen.
After around a minute and a half, the screen became grey only, no green lines- no apple logo.
I attempted to restart holding down the shift key, I saw the startup/repair process "kick in" (the horizontal repair bar running across the bottom of the screen).
Once that was finished, I got about a minute and a half worth of "spinning cursor" and then a pretty blue-lined screen (of death)
(NOTE--bright white lights are flash from camera- not on screen)
I cannot access anything now.  I know that I am running whatever the current version of OS 10.8X is now.
I am stuck- anybody got any ideas?

I have to have my serial number to give them to start the call.  I have no way to access the serial number on the computer because I cannot advance past the grey/blue screen to access it.  Is there a way to get the serial number on this computer off of the hardware itself?
Look on the bottom of the stand, Apple used to print them there I don't know if they still do or not. Also if you have the original box it's printed on that too.
In addition if you click about this Mac and click the version of OS X installed a couple of times the serial number will appear. In addition you can run System Information and get the serial number there too.
Finally it's not going to do much good to call Apple, you need to take the machine in for repair at your local Apple Store or AASP. I suspect your graphics card has failed.

  • IMac startup issue

I just tried to start my iMac and after a while, a circle with a diagonal line through it appeared, and the computer wouldn't start up. I shut it off from the power switch, waiting a few seconds, and tried again, this time no problem.
What does that symbol mean? Is this a potential future problem I should be dealing with before it becomes major?
    Thanks

Yes if you got that error once then there is cause for concern. Now before you start panicking let me explain. There is a good chance that the problem will never be seen again but there is equally a change that the problem will reoccur and may not go away. So the best thing to do is to prepare yourself for it.
1st - make sure that you keep good backups of your important data.
2nd - It may be a good idea for you to invest in an external firewire drive. On this drive you can make a complete system back up that you can boot with. Or you can just load OSX on it. This drive will be there on the self encase this problem occurs again and becomes as call it "major". You'll be able to boot the iMac from the external firewire drive which can help you troubleshoot your system, and may help keep you up and running until you resolve the issue.

  • G3 iMac Startup issue

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this...
I'm helping my nephew fix his G3 CRT iMac (tray loading version)
When powered up, it chimes and then the display comes on but only displaying a folder icon that alternates between the "Mac face" and a question mark.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause of the problem and any possible remedies?
    Many thanks
    J

Firstly with you having the Prohibited sign I recommend that you follow these steps.
I do agree though that loud noises immediately before it failed is a sign that the hard drives failed. Given the age of the machine it's not unexpected.
You can use any IDE (aka Ultra ATA/UDMA/ATA/PATA/ATA6/ATA100 etc etc) 3.5" hard drive available from any computer shop. The only drives that don't work are Serial ATA or SATA. The iMac G3 will accept an internal drive of up to 128Gb (so 120Gb is a senible size drive to go for and they seem to start at $54!). Go for a 7,200rpm drive with a decent cache (at least 8mb) as this will be much faster than the current HDD and you'll notice the difference on the iMac.
It's a good idea to change the iMac's PRAM battery (ER3S 3.6volt Lithium) whilst the case it open as these only last a few years so if you've never changed it take this opportunity.
Here are the fitting instructions. Remember to take both anti-static precautions and be careful near the CRT that holds several kV.
If you have a tray loading iMac (233-333MHz) then you must partition the drive with the first 8Gb partition containing OS X.

  • TM drive doesn't always mount on iMac startup

    Hi,
TM seems to work well most of the time. Once in a great while though, TM drive doesn't mount on iMac startup, and if I don't notice the missing icon on the desktop, backups don't happen.
TM drive is a Seagate Free Agent USB 500G. It's connected directly, not through a hub. The drive has no power switch, so I leave it alone -- out of sight, out of mind.
    Two questions:
    1. Is is something that I am doing or the way I'm set up that causes this infrequent failure?
    2. When I notice the missing connection, what's the best way to get the TM drive reconnected? What I do now to reconnect is: shut down the computer, pull the power plug on the TM drive, restart the computer, plug the drive back in.
    Your thoughts appreciated.
    Jerry

My understanding is that the disk doesn't mount, ie not visible to the system. In that event I can't see that changing Time Machine's disk allocation will achieve anything. It's a hardware initialisation issue.
If the disk isn't mounted (personally I'd check System Profiler to be absolutely sure) then there can't be any transfers going on so you should be safe to just unplug, pause to let the electronics settle and then plug back in. If that works, and the problem is rare, that might be the best way to go, although it might be that there is some problem with the drive which is not good if you are relying on it for back up. I don't know enough about hard drives to comment on that aspect (maybe it's just a driver issue?).

  • IMac startup error

I've been having some issues with my iMac freezing (especially after sleep) and sometimes not starting up. It usually makes a scratchy noise when this happens and I wonder if there is something wrong with the hard drive. However I have run several tests, hardware tests, verifying the disk, anything like that that I could find, and nothing ever shows up to have an error. The only error message I have is sometimes when it starts up and has trouble it will go to a terminal screen and tells me: respawning to quickly throttling
    too many failures in succession
    local host:/ I have no name! #
That's not the entire message per se but that's the gist of it and I don't where to find a log of errors like that. Also sometimes when it won't start up at all I have had to reinstall the software to make it work again, and once when I tried it was unable to find the disk. I ended up calling Apple and they had me erase the harddrive and then reinstall, it worked but it is still having occasional startup issues.
So my question is basically either does anyone know what's wrong, or what should I tell Apple support because right now it is running fine, and usually the problem goes away after a bit but I am living in fear of it crashing again on me during a school project or something. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I would backup your data frequently, and just be wary of what could happen. Otherwise I wouldn't obsess about it. See my FAQ on backing up*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    Obsession can quicken failure.

  • Have any ideas re: G5 startup issues? Long post...

My dual processor G5 (purchased Jan. 2005) is in the shop, and, of course, out of warranty. It's been down for over two weeks. Here is the story of its demise:
Installed 10.4.9 upgrade. Began having "launch systems" and crashdump/usb crash errors thereafter. Not a lot of info online regarding these problems, so I decided to do an archive and re-install of my system software.
Started having intermittent problems restarting the G5. Either it would chime, but not kick on the monitor, chime and kick on the monitor but hang at the grey apple startup screen, or not chime at all, with which only the fans would come on. Apple Extended Hardware Test came back OK. Still had problems after removing my USB devices.
Problems continued after the reinstall of the system software, eventually to the point where I could not even boot from a CD. When the G5 did operate, after a short period of use it would freeze, and I would have to force a restart and pray it would boot up completely. It would reliably freeze after waking it from sleep, but also froze in iPhoto and Finder as well.
I have tried resetting the PMU and the PRAM with no improvement. Took it to an Apple Authorized Service Center, luckily only a couple miles from where I work. They tried booting with the Apple RAM only, then the third party RAM only, no improvement. Hard drive was completely reformatted and system reinstalled, no improvement. I am waiting to hear what else they've tried.
My G5's serial # falls outside of those involved with the power supply issues. Yet, could this be a possibility? Any other ideas as to what the problem could be, or has anyone had similar issues?
I freelance as a graphic designer and this has me in a panic. Now using the hubby's Intel iMac to run CS2 and it's a drag.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi and thanks for the input. I just spoke to the Apple service guy and he still insists there is not a hardware issue. Apparently there is an Apple technical doc, available only to authorized techs, that refers to this particular issue, and the fix is a download and install (firmware, perhaps?) He has to contact Apple and confirm my G5 is within the serial # range for this particular fix.
That's my best interpretation of our discussion. He was rather cryptic. But he says it's not the power supply.
I did an archive and install because, like an idiot, I did not have anything backed up at that point. After that failed, I used up my stash of DVDs and copied gigs to our iMac until the G5 gave out. I had run the hardware test several times and each time came back clean.
Permissions were repaired before and after updates; had it freeze a couple times mid-update. Tried booting in safe mode and single-user mode and still had the same startup issues.
To add insult to injury, I purchased a LaCie Porsche external drive as an eventual backup drive whenever the G5 returns. Hooked it up to our iMac to backup the items I saved off the G5. It failed after the second use. Returned for replacement.
    Thanks.

  • I held "d" on my imac startup and i can't exit that says nobootable device

It'd be great if i could get some help. So far i have turned off the imac several times and no luck, i kept getting the screen.

Hold down the Option key for the Startup Manager window.

  • IMac startup problems

I have an iMac G4. It's an early flat panel model without the iSight built in. I just upgraded from 10.4.8 to .11 using the combo installer.
Now It won't startup completely, it gets to the desktop and then hangs before displaying the dock or menus. In safe mode it start up completely but 1 mouse click on anything brings up the rainbow cursor. starting in single user mode is fine and I can run fsck no problem. At this point I'd startup from the Apple Installer CD and reinstall the OS but it goes into kernel panic when I try! I tried target disk mode and ran Disk Utility from another Mac, the hard drive needed some volume header repairs but it didn't help. I'm running out of options here. Anyone? Please!

Hi, Just want to add that you are not the only one with that problem.
I've also tried everything that is recommended on the Apple support sites.
My iMac G4 (got it from a friend) ran well on Panther, but now it has the same startup issue after upgrading to Tiger. It will only run in safe mode. Without - no chance.
If one advice is to formate your HD, I did it at least four times with the same results.
Another advice given on the support site is to check the Classic part on your HD - I don't have one so that can be excluded as well.
My local Apple store spoke vaguely about some RAM problems ormotherboard issues that might occur.
I will have the machine tested next week and say what the outcome is, if not by chance someone knows the problem.
    Good Luck
    Jürgen

  • Bootcamp Windows 7 on iMac Startup Freezes

Ok, so I have tried installing Windows 7 like 10 times & with every install, after doing all Bootcamp Updates & Windows Updates, I get a Frozen Startup at the beginning where it says Windows & the little colored dots start loading. It always freezes right when the dots start loading. I've tried repairing, updating drivers, etc...A lot of times even with hitting the Option Key, it'll just go right to Mac, since Mac is my Default Startup Partition. No black screens, just Startup issues.

I have two semi-related issues and potential fixes.
    1. I have issues booting up when my external monitor's USB hub is plugged into the Macbook Pro. There is an external harddrive attached, which may be the root of the issue. Around 50% of the time it freezes on the boot disk selection screen.
When the boot hangs, I unplug the USB hub, turn the power off/on, and hold alt to bring up the boot selection menu. I've never had an issue booting into Windows when I unplug my USB hub with the external harddrive.
I'm not sure if this update fixed my issue, need to check my EFI: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3423
    2. My computer will freeze randomly in Windows 7 (64bit). I believe the issue is related to the graphics drivers on my GeForce 330m card. There are two options, so far the first one has worked for me.
    a. Turn off Aero graphics. Goto: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Performance Information and Tools and then on the left click on "Adjust Visual Effects" Select the "Adjust for best Performance" to unselect all options.
    b. Update your video drivers to something other than the default Bootcamp video drivers. (Start looking here: http://wilby.com/cameron_blog/?p=118)

  • Imac startup: three beeps continuously, monitor remains dark.

imac startup: three loud beeps continuously, monitor remains dark.

According to Apple's "Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2" doc, 3 beeps means "no good banks".
Do what Niel says.  Reseat all the dimms.  Maybe even shuffle them around.

  • New StartUp Issue

My new MacBook Pro 17" has been having startup issues recently. After I shut down, leave, and come back, the startup issue occurs.
After pressing the power button, fans will go on, proccessing noises occur, HOWEVER, it just boots to a white/grey screen W/OUT the apple logo or round loading bar. The keyboard does not initialize either.
The only thing that I have found to 'fix' it, is just to leave it powered off for an extended period of time. It will then boot up.
I have tried many non-software related 'cures', and my compuer is completely up to date on all OsX software.
    Any ideas guys??

you can try to boot to safe mode ( restart holding Shift )
    - you can attempt to boot to install disc and disk utility
    - you can boot to AHT ( apple hardware test ) to see what component is failing ( insert disc, restart holding D )
    - chances are, this is a hardware issue though. you will probably need repairs.

  • Startup issue - Process 'Starting Framework'

    Hi
I seem to have a startup issue with NM2004s.  I get a Half Green/ Half Yellow icon in the MMC.  The 01 instance is always yellow and never progresses onto green.  I have a process status of 'starting framework'.
