IMac Startup Sound

My iMac no longer makes the "BONG" sound while turning on. Why is that? Is there a way to get that back?! I REALLY WANT IT!

  • 24" iMac Startup Sound

I recently upgraded my PPC G4 to a brand new 24" iMac.
On my G4, the mac startup sound would play over the external speakers, and when booting the computer late at night, I could turn down the volume to avoid waking my roommates.
The new iMac 24" seems to blast the startup sound, even if I mute the volume before shutting down.
Does anyone else have external speakers hooked up to their new 24"? Does the boot sound come from the external or internal speakers?

One of the oddities of the iMac line is that the startup sound comes from the internal speakers. If you have external speakers plugged in and unpowered, it makes no difference, you still get a "BLING" when you start up. And since the 24" machine has extra big speakers and bigger audio amp, you get an extra big BLING! Nice, eh?
You might try the freeware utility called "Psst" <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25458>. I haven't tried it, but it does seem to be able to silence the startup sound on most Macs.

  • How to mute startup sound? (iMac, OS 10.8)

Ever since I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, the startup sound came back.
I am using an iMac so you clearly didn't read this post if you're suggesting the Silent Ninja application. I've even tried it myself, and it doesn't work.
The Arcana is what I used to use with Snow Leopard and seems it's incompatible with 10.8.

If you use the iMac's built-in speakers for sound when using the iMac, the startup sound reflects the volume setting for the built-in speakers.
If you use headphones or external speakers connected to the headphones port on the iMac, that volume setting is stored separately (from the built-in speakers).  To mute the startup sound, disconnect anything in the headphones port, so that the iMac is using the built-in speakers.  Set the volume to mute.
You can now reconnect the headphones or external speakers, and the volume level should go back to normal, but the setting for the built-in speakers has been set to mute and it is retained.  When you startup, the startup sound should be muted.

  • IMac 2.4GHz - No startup sound, no fans spinning

    Hi !
I have a iMac 2.4 GHz with 4 GB RAM and running MacOs 10.5.8
A few weeks ago it suddenly went dead. When I try to startup again, no startup sound appears and no video (black). Suddenly again it startup with sound and video and worked about 30 sec then went dead again (?). I have worked earlier as technician so I opened the iMac and I saw that only 3 of 4 leds lit when I try to start it up. The 4:th led tells me: "LED 4 lights only if the computer detects an over-temperature condition. This LED will be OFF when the computer is turned on and running at the correct temperature".
Can someone help me with this. Anybody experienced the same problem ? Have tried to disconnect the internal HDD and tried change RAM.
    Regards
    Magnus

I have the same imac and have the same problem. I was playing a light-on-processor-usage windowed game, and suddenly the screen went black and the sounds stopped. I pressed keys and heard no activity in response from the computer, although it still was "on" as far as it had power to it, and i could hear the slight harddrive noise (still spinning, not read/write sounds). So i held the power button down to shut it off, then i pressed the power button to start back up, and no familiar startup tone, no video(screen stayed black, didn't even flicker). So i let the computer sit unplugged all night, then tried it in the morning. still same startup as the night before--woosh of the fans starting, the harddrive twitches, then it doesn't sound like anything happening in there, everything at idle. I'm out of warranty, (and consequently will never let any of my other macs go out of warranty again), and this *****. By chance any way you could explain to me where to look for these "LEDS" in the imac, i think i'll open it up to confirm that i have the same condition as the original poster. Such a weird problem... i'm so dissatisfied about this though... PLEASE HELP!

  • The startup sound on the desk top imac has stopped is this a sign of hacking?

The startup sound on my imac has stopped is this a sign of startup hacking?

The startup chime means the Power-On Self Test (POST) has been passed successfully, and that no hardware failure or issue has been detected. There are ways to prevent it from sounding, one of them being to put your sound output to mute. You can also use a Terminal command to keep it off, but it'll reset to normal next time your restart your Mac.
There's a neat little prefpane that keeps it off between restarts. It's called (brace yourselves) StartupSound. Available for free here.
Could it be that you just muted your Mac?

  • How do I mute the startup sound

How do I mute the startup sound on my imac

The start up sound is there for specific reasons, for example if you do a Safe Boot or PRAM reset  you need the start up sound to do those key functions. I would recommend against masking it and follow Apple's suggestions.  Please read your owners manual, where Apple states:
    Putting Your iMac to Sleep
If you‘ll be away from your iMac for less than a few days, put it to sleep. When your iMac is in sleep, its screen is dark. You can quickly wake your iMac and bypass the startup process.
This means don't turn it off, my iMac is about 5 years old now. The only time it's restarted is when I'm doing updates, it has reliably that way and has never given me any problems. In short, let it sleep when it's not being used.

  • How do I enable the startup sound on Mac OS 10.2.8(Jaguar)

    Three things
1.How do I enable the startup sound on Mac OS 10.2.8(Jaguar)
I am using an iMac G4
I like the startup chime of mac osx but it doesn't seem to be chiming when I turn the computer on.
    2. How do I get safari+flash player  on 10.2.8
    3. How do I update the computer (e.g. Windows update kind off thing)
    Please help.
    Cheers,
    Mittens131

    1. Make sure the volume is on. Check that the machine makes other sounds.
    2. Here is a link for Safari for a Mac 10.2.8
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2964
Though I'd be surprised if it would be very useful. Things have changed a lot on the internet since that came out. An old version of Firefox might be better. I don't know where you would get an old version of flash. It is an Adobe product.
    3. There are no further updates to  Jaguar 10.2 than you already have, 10.2.8 that was the last update.

  • How do I turn off startup sound?

Every computer I ever had, the first thing I do is to turn off the startup sound because it is very annoying in a public place and sometimes in a quiet place. I have not been able to find out how to trun it off on my Air. I asked the guys at the stores and they just say you can't. That is really dumb. I turned off my speaker but that is not a practical way because I may not remember to turn it off when I shut down.
The question is how do I turn it off permenantly.
    Love to know.
    Thanks.

  • IMac noise/sound

    Hi,
My 11 month old iMac had it's hard drive replaced in November and ever since has made a strange noise.
It makes a sort of 'blip' beep sound at random intervals. Similar to submarine, although not quite the same. I don't get the sound on start up, but I always get it when the screensaver has been on. Otherwise it seems totally random. I also hear it with the sound switched off.
I'm guessing it's some sort of alert sound, however I've looked for ways to identify it or switch it off and come up with nothing. It's only done this since it came back from repair.
Any help with identifying it would be very gratefully received as it's starting to drive me mad!
    Dani. x

Sorry to hear of your pending insanity.
You can start looking in System Preferences and checking the preferences for any applications that are open when you hear it. I suspect it just going off because some preference is checked.
You can also do a SMC reset, I doubt that will do anything but it won't hurt it either.
    *SMC RESET*
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    *PRAM RESET*
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

  • When i turn on my iMac its sounds like a light bulb struguling

When i turn on my iMac its sounds like a light bulb struguling

Not sure what a struggling light bulb sounds like. It is very hard to describe sounds sometimes. Is it an electrical buzzing or crackling sound? Does the computer still startup normally after the sound? You have Lion so I wonder if it is a new iMac. If so, call AppleCare.

  • Startup sound

Can anyone tell me if the Arcana startup sound pane works on the new Alum intel-Imac? I have it installed on my G4 and it works great and I would like to put it on my new iMac. I just don't want to create any problems!

The 1.1 Beta works great on my Intel-based Mac. I don't believe that you will have any issues on the newest models.

  • Startup Sound Phenomenon

When I turn on my iMac, it plays the startup sound and repeats the first part of it, then cuts off halfway through, and does it again and again for a while until the apple logo appears, and everything else is fine. This happens mostly when I am coming from the Windows XP part of my mac.

i'm having the same problem. and it's not all the time either. i got my macbook in june and it's been happening since i got it. i have a black macbook, everything stock. i probably should've called it in but....just didnt. it can be plugged into my external, or not and make the sounds. it could be after being off all day, or not and make the soungs. sometimes switching from windows, sometimes not. but yes, the startup sound will play, then once more but shorter, then again but shorter, and then go to the apple logo. quite strange. do you think it could be related to this?

  • Mighty Mouse and Startup Sound

    Hey,
    Two things...
    1) My Mighty Mouse scroller is very unreliable. On some ocassions it doesn't scroll at all and then on another day it's perfect! For the past couple of days, it hasn't been scrolling upwards but it's fine scrolling left, right and downwards. It's not physically stuck but it doesn't make the 'clicking' noise when I push it upwards, nor does it scroll! Is anyone else having similar problems, and what should I do?
    2) My iMac G5 is blasting out that noise when you switch it on. It's really loud and distorts the speakers. Not so bad in the afternoon, but when you switch it on really early in the morning, it's enough to wake the whole neighbourhood up. Is there a way to turn it down or switch it off? (I've tried turning the main volume down on the computer but these are two seperate volumes so it seems).
    Thanks in advance,
    El Barto

To control the volume level of your startup sound, use this free utility:
    http://www5e.biglobe.ne.jp/~arcana/StartupSound/index.en.html
It will allow you to mute, or decrease the volume of just your startup sound. It leaves all other sound items at their normal level.
As for the mouse, I would try it on another system. If it still acts-up, then I would contact Apple for a replacement.
If it works fine on the other system, then you have a software problem.
Either way, try re-installing the software on the CD that came with the mouse. That might help.

  • Startup sound, ARGH!!

I perused this forum and could not find a satisfactory answer.  This startup sound is so loud it could break windows in the house.  I have tried this:
Moved ALL sound sliders all the way to the left in the Sounds System Preferences.
Tried that SystemPrefPane file but it will not run under OS X Lion.
Tried clicking on mute ALL sounds.
Tried Sound Ninja or something like that, no help.
I am about ready to open the case and cut the speaker wire on my iMac.  Yes, I do know it is for POST reasons but I don't really care because if there's a problem I'd probably know it anyway.
It WAS silent but just yesterday on bootup it started chiming again at FULL volume.  It makes your teeth rattle and your ears bleed.
This is VERY serious, there MUST be a way to shut off that sound.
I saw some way to do it with the terminal but that was confusing to me and I didn't want to mess anything up.
If someone can come up with a way to do it I will PAY them REAL CASH, $$$, YES, I will pay someone to help me shut off this idiotic and loathsome chime once and for all.

Um, yeah, thanks, but I already did that, I actually read every single one of them and none of them had any workable solutions.  All the thrid party software will not shut it off under Lion.

  • HT3964 iMac Startup Screen is All White

Intel based iMac ~ 2007 boots to a blank white screen. It will not boot. The problem just started when I attempted to reboot and reset holding SHIFT-CMD-P-R.  I'm not all that knowledgeable of tech things on the iMac.  But if possible to get the iMac to boot up again what should I do?  Any assist is appreciated.

Several steps ... first, have you tried a safe boot by holding down the shift key when you boot? That may take awhile to complete. If that works, try a normal boot.
If that doesn't do it, do an SMC and PRAM reset:
    SMC:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM:
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
    Now try to reboot.
If that doesn't do it, find your original OS X disks that came with your iMac (or the Snow Leopard disk), insert the first one and reboot holding the C key down. That will cause it to boot to the DVD. Under utilities on the menu bar, bring up Disk Utility and repair the hard drive. Also repair permissions while you're there.  Try booting from the hard drive again.
