Imac stops-sleeps unexpectedly
My G5 iMac goes to sleep unexpectedly, usually in the middle of something I don't want to interrupt. It does it
-when I burn audio CDs from iTunes (hour long mp3s)
-when I record audio input from an LP (but not when I record streaming audio from RealPlayer)
-on some heavy web pages (Disney stuff, w/ a lot of flash & audio).
Each time, it just dies - clicking brings it back as if it was coming out of sleep, but it interrupts whatever was happening previously.
Thanks for help!
A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
-/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.
Cheers!

Stop mouse waking iMac from sleep
I have a new Logitech USB mouse I am using with my iMac. The problem now is whenever I put my iMac to sleep its woken up by the mouse.
Is there a way to stop the mouse being able to wake the iMac in Leopard?
Thanks. In System Preferences, click on Mouse & Keyboard, then Bluetooth and uncheck the "allow bluetooth devices to wake this computer."
Message was edited by: Larry Gage - Oops, I read your message through the fog of morning and just now realized you said USB mouse. Never mind my comment on bluetooth. -
Intermittent problem putting my 24" iMac to sleep.
About every tenth time I attempt to put my iMac to sleep it will do the following: The screen dims a bit, the cursor disappears and the clock stops. The machine then becomes totally unresponsive and all I can do is do a forced shutdown.
I thought it might have been the 'safe sleep' function so I disabled it. No change. I cleaned out all the caches, repaired permissions, checked the drive directory, reset the machine (pulling the cord, waiting and then putting back in and starting it up). Then I reset everything there is to reset! No change.
Has anyone had this happen? If so, have you found a solution?
GriffJust to report a resolution to the problem putting my 24" iMac to sleep...
As I said, I put in two fresh 1G DIMMs (Shika brand). The two Kingston DIMMs were found to be defective. The sleep problem seems to be resolved. Also I found that a second problem (Applications suddenly and unexpectedly quitting) seems to have been resolved as well.
Something else I found as well is that the machine runs much faster. Right off the bat, when I ran the Apple Hardware Test, it was completed in 53 seconds. With my previous RAM it took over two minutes to complete.
Conclusion: Even if Utilities such as the Hardware Test and TechTool Pro 4 report no problem with RAM, some of the problems that people are experiencing that appear to be software based may be caused by bad RAM. It might be an idea to download and run Memtest or Rember over a period of a few hours to see if there is a problem. Or if you have access to a supply of RAM, you could swap in new ones and see if the problems go away.

Trouble when waking iMac from sleep?
When I wake my iMac from sleep I get an error message on screen telling me there has been an unexpected shutdown. Any clues as to the solution?
Thanks for the quick replies. When I look in System Diagnostic Reports there is nothing there, plenty in 'all messages. However I did copy the messages sent tp Apple on the last problem which I paste below...

My imac shuts down unexpectedly and now a fan is running??
Hello,
I have been working on my iMac all morning and it shut down twice within a half hour and I had to press the start button on the back to get it going again. Now their is a loud fan running and I have no idea what is going on. Help much appreciated. Thanks in advance!Hi ebeugs,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your iMac shut down unexpectedly, and the fan is running unusually fast or loud, you may need to reset the System Management Controller.
I recommend following this troubleshooting method:
Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If the iMac unexpectedly shuts down again, or the fan continues running unusually fast or loud, follow these steps:
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
You can find these steps and more information about resetting the SMC here:
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Screen freezes up when I wake the iMac from sleep
Hi, all. This is my first post to Apple Discussions, so please pardon me if this is a dumb question. I have had a problem twice in the last 24 hours. I have an iMac G5 that I keep on most of the time. I do put it on sleep mode when I'm not using it. This morning, and then again this evening, I had the iMac on sleep mode. When I woke the computer, the screen came up, as usual, but when I went to click on the Safari icon, the screen became fuzzy and locked up. Powering the unit down was the only way to restart the computer. After that, things worked fine. However, this is a new occurrence. Is it something serious? Is it easily fixable? Is this common with iMacs? Just wondering. In the meantime, I'll probably just use the "shut down" command when the computer is not in use. Thanks for any advice that you can offer.
iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)Been waiting along time for this problem to be fixed. Unfortunately the update hasn't help at all and even made the situation worse. Now my airplay connection from iMac to stereo abruptly stops after about 10-15 min. so I have to go over and quit wifi, start it up and find my airport network. Not sure why it always has a problem with the apple airport network. My neighbor's pc network is always there.

When i wake up my iMac from sleep my wifi is disconnected. It also disconnects my iPad, my wives iPad, my iPhone & Sky On Demand which is connected via wifi. To reconnect all devices i have to switch off & then on again wifi on the iMac. Can anyone help?
Had the same issue and finally solved it. After the upgrade to Mavericks our 2 new Macbook Airs stopped connecting automatically to Wifi while the older machines the kids had still worked fine.
Bought a new airport extreme and problem solved. Our Airport Extreme was about 5 years old and was probably not compatible with the new OSX.
BTW this was after trying everything people suggested on this forum and a 4 hour marathon tech support call with Apple where we reinstalled the OSX.
***** to need to spend $200 but glad the problem got solved.
New extreme is also mega fast so its all good. -
[posted this previously, but in general imac group - apologies]

Pretty frustrating because it kills the tasks. Current theories are
-cpu temperature
-motherboard
-reinstalling select system files
Any ideas?I've probably already posted this to you somewhere else (the problem with multiple posts-more work and wasted time for us), but just in case;

Vnc wont wake up the mountain lion imac from sleep
after installing mountain lion, vnc wont wake up the imac from sleep. once awake, it works fine any ideas?
Does your Mac have a wireless connection? Because if this is the case, wake up for LAN access seems to have stopped working altogether with Mountain Lion.

UPS and our iMac // Will not allow iMac to sleep.
Hello,
We have a Cyberpower UPS (CP685AVR) for our 20" iMac 2.66Ghz (last gen)and it works great. It has a USB interface to communicate with the iMac's power manager, and tells me how much juice is left, how the cells are doing, etc.
The only problem is the UPS will not allow the iMac to sleep; if I try to manually put it to sleep, it will wake again in 10-15sec. If I disconnect the UPS, the iMac works just fine. There are no third-party drivers, either. Cyberpower relies on Apple's built-in UPS support. I've been leaving the USB cable unplugged but would like like to use it if possible.
Has anyone had an issue like this, and what has been your experience? Thanks.I won't buy Cyberpower anymore since I had one burn up on me so I have not had any experience with their newer models. I have 2 APC's and they work fine with the built in Energy Saver settings.
Are you connecting the USB directly to the back? I'm not sure if it will help but you might try resetting the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543?viewlocale=en_US

Sometimes after putting my iMac to sleep, I cannot get it to wake up again. It's as if it's shut down and I have to turn it off at the mains and restart it. Any ideas why? Does this keep happening to anybody else?
That message means that you have to restore the iPad now. Something went wrong. You need to restore the iOS software and then restore from the backup.
Read this carefully and follow the instructions. Make sure that you restore from your backup at the end of the process. That is covered at the bottom of the support article.

MacBook Pro battery had accumulated more than a 1000 charges, and stopped functioning unexpectedly. Went and got the battery replaced. Just saw that SMC Firmware 1.6 update deals with this. Possible to get my money back?
The firmware update corrects an error that may occur, however the techs would have checked the condition of the battery prior to installing a new one. If the battery was questionable, the firmware update was really not too important.
You can check the battery condition by going to the apple, left side of the menu bar, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, Power and see what it says about Cycle Count, Condition, Capacity: Condition anything but Normal needs to be checked and may need to be replaced.
The cycle count of 1,000 charge cycles is the typical life of a Lithium-Ion battery, the point at which the capacity drops to 80% of the as built capacity. -
My imac stops everytime when I try to extract ipod nano. So if I do it by force it freezes agian. Have no choice but to shut down the computer
by pushing power button. Pleas help me solve this out!!!
It's not good to shut off the power forcibly, right? (I dun know what else I can do...)Hi Min! I'm having exactly the same issue - have been putting up with it now for months but have finally had enough! Every single time i eject either my iphone, ipad or ipod nano, itunes freezes up, the computer becomes unresponsive. Usually i can use the mouse to highlight icons but the system doesn't respond, the keyboard doesn't work and I have to do a hard reset.
Arrrrrggggggh!!!!!!! lol
Someone please help!!! -
My iMac stopped working, the screen remained on.
My iMac stopped playing iTunes and I found that the wireless mouse cursor could be moved around but it was otherwise inoperable.
My only remedy was to switch off on the start button and re-boot.
The machine booted ok and is now working ok but I am concerned that the event may be symptomatic of trouble to come!!
Has anyone got any clues to this type of problem? You would need to look at your crash log and figure out what caused this lockup. Unless it becomes a frequent event I would just forget about it.
