IMac suddenly has no audio except system audio.

Very odd.
I have no audio for movies, music, youtube etc, but I have system audio sounds like mail, trash emptying and those kinds of things.
I have tried rebooting and double checking connections.
It's almost like some driver or file has disappeared.
I do have an up to date Time Machine, so if anyone could tell me what to restore I'll try that.
Thanks!
Korky

OK, I've now got the audio device back on Device Manager, by updating the BIOS - it detected the  hardware change.
It's listed as Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus.
It finds the driver from Windows Update but won't install the driver, though. It fails before completing.
When I try and update the driver I get a similar error - saying that there is an I/O error.
Does anyone know how I fix this?
The tech support guy I spoke to suggested I go straight to doing a reinstall of Windows. Any softer/less painful options likely to work?

Please do 2-3 SMC and PRAM resets back to back and retest. Also use new cables, they can go bad.

  • IMac suddenly has trouble with wireless connection

    This is how it happened:
    1. Landlord buys electrically faulty mansion
    2. Landlord realizes he cannot keep up with mortgage and property taxes
    3. Landlord subleases rooms to renters, including me
    4. House has a power outage, iMac shuts down.
    5. iMac recognizes wireless network, but shows that it has zero connectivity (which is false, because my two other laptops connect just fine, because their powers obviously weren't cut off abruptly)
    6. Verified and fixed the iMac with installation disc, but still the wireless connection comes and goes on its own whim.
    7. Tried shutting off nearby computers to see if it would take away any sort of interference. Worked, but after hours of working, iMac yet again fails to connect.
    8. Tried assigning it IP ranges and all that - no luck there.
So what now, guys? Am I going to have to send my beloved iMac away for repair? It's the current model, if that helps. Any help would be appreciated...!

Just called apple support. This is what they suggest:
    System management control reset:
    1. plug out everything that connects to the imac
    2. press the power button for 7 seconds
    3. don't start the imac yet!
    4. as SOON as you start the imac, press command/option/P/R.
If this doesn't work, then you need to pretty much bring it to the store to have it looked at.
    This actually worked for me.

  • Internal drive on my iMac suddenly has a new name

My dad's aluminium iMac (Serial number W8734****86) has an internal hard drive which has unexpectedly renamed itself. Also under 'Sharing', there is now the number 4 in parantheses at the end of my dad's name. He has the Administrator account on the machine, but is completely computer un-savvy, my guess is that there is some tool out there that can fix this issue, but can someone suggest one that would work?
    <Edited by Host>

The Drive itself can be renamed by highlighting it on the Desktop or in Finder window.
The "4" isn't normally a problem, it means it connected more than once, could be ftom using Airport/wifi & Ethernet combined, or just more Services connecting, like iTunes Shaing, etc.

  • My 2yr old imac suddenly has crashing problems.

Every time I click on something in Digital Performer, finder, safari, etc... it takes like 5 minutes for it to complete.  I can't even go to finder to force quit while this is happening, the whole machine freezes.  Eventually it unfreezes, but as soon as I try to do anything else it freezes again.  It was doing this occasionally last weekend, but I would restart and it would be fine.  This started last night right after I bounced some audio tracks to MP3.   I have all the software updates, tried restarting, starting up several times.  Is it possible I have a virus?  Is there anything I can check on my own? Can I take it to a store to a genius?  I have tons of files that are not backed up that I can't lose either (my own stupidity for not backing up).  Please advise- thanks!

  • Imac suddenly has a guest account icon

Last night I logged out of my iMac running Lion and was surprised to see an icon for Guest that was not there before. Under it it stated that the computer would now reboot with a secure login for that user. I immediatly shut down and rebooted the wireless router.  I had just signed up for iCloud, I was also configuring a new Garmin GPS for the car, I had added two patches for Lion and a few days earlier I had activated my account with my service provider using their dedicated router. The wireless account is secured with a new password.  Is this a sign of a virus or hacking? What steps should I take before I turn the computer back on?

I'm not sure exactly what happened, but you have nothing to worry about with a Guest account. Guest accounts allow restricted use of the computer and internet, but will not allow anyone to install or do damage to the installation.
I don't think you need to do anything before turning it back on.
Once it's on, if you want, you can go to System Preferences > Users & Groups and you can turn *off* the Guest account so it doesn't show up on your login screen.

  • Help: my iMac suddenly has a screen saver that i don't recognize, and processing has slowed to a crawl...

When I try to awaken the computer, the screen saver (a changing series of neon-colored rings and dots) does not immediately disappear. It can take a full minute for it to go through different displays before it goes away and is replaced by my desktop. And even after I get my desktop back, it takes forever for applications to launch, and even to type simple words into the google search bar. I type, and then have to wait for the words to appear. Is the appearance of the screen saver and the slow processing a coincidence? If not, what can I do to remove the screen saver (and solve the problem)?

  • Macbook 2008 sound to Home Theatre System which only has optical audio.

Trying to connect my macbook (2008) to panasonic home theatre system which only has optical audio. Tried using toslink optical audio cable with 3.5mm jack converter but still no sound, any ideas please? Thanks

If I understand what you are saying then yes you are correct. If you want the sound from your tv to come out of your home theatre amplifier run an optical caple from the TV out to one of the inputs on your receiver. Then select that source when you want to listen to the tv. In order to get 5.1 sound though the program source will have to be broadcast in dolby digital. Other wise it will most likely be dolby pro logig or stereo depending on how your receiver is set up.
It will probably also output sound for your blu ray player as well through the tv because hdmi carries audio to your tv. However the best possible sound will come from hooking the hdmi cable directly up to your receiver and selecting that source during dvd playback. Which is the way you have it if I understand correctly.

  • HT2844 iMac 27"(late 2009), Audio in/Optical digital audio out port, stopped recognizing my new Bose speaker system, previously working...

    Hello,
My iMac 27"(late 2009), Audio in/Optical digital audio out port, stopped recognizing my new Bose speaker system, previously working through that port. I tested the speaker system through my iPhone, and it works fine. I hooked it up to the Headphone out/Optical digital audio in port, and it works through that port also. I did a computer restart, I also checked all wiring and did a system repair on the computer. I also restarted the computer in mode where I could use the system utility, and the computer still did not correct the matter, and it reported everything as being "ok". I wented into "sound", through system preferences, and the computer does not recognize anything I plug into the Audio in/Optical digital audio out port. When I plug the speaker sysytem into the headphone out/optical digital audio out port, it does recognize the Bose speaker system as being "headphones".
Reading through a lot of forums, I hear everything from compatibility, to the port being stuck, and on and on. Since the port was working before, and just quit working one day, I wonder if there is a capacitor or fuse or some type of similar thing is blown, and causing the port to be unfunctionable. Maybe the port went bad, but before this time, I had never used it, and the computer does not move around, and I never plug in and pull wiring out unless needing to, and that being rare.
Here is a link to Costco, where I bought the system, and the exact system I have, if this is any help:  http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku= A4092931&ST=pla&dgc=ST&cid=262075&lid=4742361&acd=1230980794501410
By the way, I am running OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5). I upgraded to Mavericks about a month ago, and expeirienced a number of issues, and had to take my iMac into Apple. Talking with the tech, I decided to wait for a while more before I upgraded to Mavericks. I try and keep the computer maintained.
If any of you have any ideas regadrding wear and tear, and fix I can do, etc., besides having to take my computer into Apple? Thank you, and potentially all of you, for your time and effort in helping me with this issue. Thank you kindly.
    davE

Okay, davE, first, you have posted in the "Mac Pro" forum (not Macbook Pro), so we can't be super helpful
but we help you. First, hold down the Option key while clicking on the speaker icon at the top of your screen. This should show you all the inputs and outputs you have. you could check in "About this Mac" then "More info" to see whatever's recognized. Then, maybe, fire up Audio MIDI. your speaker system should show up there. something might have gotten set incorrectly. You can test it there.  I guess you are using the good ol' analog cable for connection, and it works on your iPhone, so the cable isn't bad.  You could try this. it 's an adapter which might solve your problem

depending on which model of Bose speaker you have, you might try doing a product reset
turn off speakers...unplug power cord from outlet...wait 1 minute..plug cord into outlet..turn on speakers..
    \\turning off automatic standby||
press and hold top of control pod for 6 seconds until you hear 2 tones that go from high to low
other than that ,I  don't know

  • Does the built-in DAC on my 2007 mid yr iMac support 96/24 audio as it supplies signal to the headphone jack? (is there a reason to export audio via optical jack then to an external DAC?

does the built-in DAC on my 2007 mid yr iMac support 96/24 audio as it supplies signal to the headphone jack?  If so, is there a reason to export audio via optical jack then to an external DAC then to stereo?

My suggestion to work around this problem would be to hook up an Airport Express. The AE also has an optical out the same as your iMac. As long as your wireless connection is robust enough you should be able to stream from your iMac to your AE and then have the optical cable connect between your AE and your DAC, which then connects to your Integrated Amp/Receiver/Pre-Amp (depending on your system configuration).
I assume because you are using the optical out and connecting to an external DAC that you are looking for a high level of Audio quality ?

  • On iMac 2011 stopped working audio output.

On iMac 2011 stopped working audio output.
Is it possible to transmit a signal through the audio input?

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. If you've installed a software equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and restart.
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
    7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    14. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from  system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having

  • .Mov files in CC : The File Has no Audio or Video Streams

I recently updated premier to CC , since i have issues iimporting any .mov files at all.
The specific ones Im trying for my current project are exports from AE , rendered lossless animation .mov , worked fine in CS6 , will play in quicktime and other generic's but always getting the The FIle Has no Audio or Video Streams message when trying to import into a project.
Quicktime is updated so I can't understand why the won't play, is this a CC bug ?
i go back to cs6 on my other comp they open fine...
Ive seen a few topics on this none with a resolution and most of those where from cam's, this is an export from AE, anyone able to help this is stopping me from working atm ......

I can verify that Apple screen recordings without audio do not import into any Adobe premeier.
Details on screen recording from Gspot v2.70a:
    H.264
    qt  : Apple QuickTime (.MOV/QT)
    File Type: QuickTime (.MOV)
    Mime Type: video/quicktime
    Len: 1:03.083
    Frms: 1,521
    Qf: 0.153
    Frames/s: 20.000
    wx: 1280 x 800
    sar: 1.600 (8:5)
However Apple (MAC OSX) screen recordings WITH audio will import.
I would think this should be fixable with hotfixes...
If you (adobe staff) have access to macbook pros 2012 or 2013 models, open quick time pro, do a screen recording, make sure no audio is recording, just your screen movements.. then export to 1080p video (mov is only option).. then on a windows PC try to import that file into adobe premiere. The file will play perfectly fine natively in windows with any player so long as a H264 decoder is available on that system... the problem here is Adobe Premiere. Not the users system.
    Edit:
To help those with this issue.. just make sure when you render your mov that you have ANY kind of audio in it.. and just remove the audio track once imported into premiere. I know it's frustrating and you would think something as simple as not having an audio track wouldn't break premiere but alas... we have to work around the shortcomings until they decide to fix it.. just like the VFR issue in premiere.

  • Movie Has No Audio

I'm new to the iPod scene, and am ripping a few movies from my DVDs to stick on my iPod. I've done 4 movies so far. 3 worked great, but 1 has no audio. It's the problem described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302588
Except that the file in question isn't muxed, from what I can tell. I opened it in QuickTime and clicked "Show Movie Info" like the article says, and QT says the movie is MPEG4. It doesn't say "MPEG1 Muxed" or "MPEG2 Muxed."
I used DVD Decryptor to rip the DVD. After ripping, I can play the VOB file in Windows Media Player with no problems (after renaming it to .MPG). But after converting it with Videora, the audio is gone. I've tried both MP4 and H264. Same results.
    What the heck?

Am I better off just springing for QuickTime Pro? Can Pro convert the VOB files to an iPod-readable format?

  • My 24" iMac won't read audio cds--ejects them after about 15 seconds

My 24" intel iMac won't read audio cds. It ejects them after about 15 seconds. I have virtually never played cds on this machine in five years. It plays dads with no problem. Anybody have any feedback. I also saw a fix by deleting some presence files.

I saw this on a forum from about four years ago:
    Trash the following folders:
    com.apple.kernelcaches (from System/Library/Caches
    extensions.kextcache (from System/Library
    CDInfo.cidb (from Home/Library/Preferences
    Restart
    Could this be a fix.
Unfortunately, I can't reset PRAM. I've done it a thousand times over twenty years, but my machine simply boots up without the extra chimes.
