IMac suddenly has trouble with wireless connection

This is how it happened:
1. Landlord buys electrically faulty mansion
2. Landlord realizes he cannot keep up with mortgage and property taxes
3. Landlord subleases rooms to renters, including me
4. House has a power outage, iMac shuts down.
5. iMac recognizes wireless network, but shows that it has zero connectivity (which is false, because my two other laptops connect just fine, because their powers obviously weren't cut off abruptly)
6. Verified and fixed the iMac with installation disc, but still the wireless connection comes and goes on its own whim.
7. Tried shutting off nearby computers to see if it would take away any sort of interference. Worked, but after hours of working, iMac yet again fails to connect.
8. Tried assigning it IP ranges and all that - no luck there.
So what now, guys? Am I going to have to send my beloved iMac away for repair? It's the current model, if that helps. Any help would be appreciated...!

Just called apple support. This is what they suggest:
System management control reset:
1. plug out everything that connects to the imac
2. press the power button for 7 seconds
3. don't start the imac yet!
4. as SOON as you start the imac, press command/option/P/R.
If this doesn't work, then you need to pretty much bring it to the store to have it looked at.
This actually worked for me.

  • Anybody has trouble with ipad2 connecting to internet?

I have been gifted an Ipad 2, when I choose my WI-Fi network...it keep spinning and I cannot connect to the internet. I have an Iphone 4 and I'v never had trouble connecting to the internet.  I have my internet settings, everything seems fine. Has anybody encountered the same problem??? Your suggestions and tips will be most welcome.          Thank you

First power off then back on your phone.
Then verify your network as a check mark next to your network name in settings > wi-fi and if so attempt the Internet.
If that doesn't work, toggle on and off airplane mode, then attempt Internet.
If that doesn't work reset network settings via settings > general > reset > reset network settings.
Please reply if the above fixed or didn't fix your Internet connection issue with iPad 2.

It just says not connected, and as soon as it bails to menu, it connects again and will play for another minute before doing the same thing all over again.

    Hello David,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your Apple TV is having trouble streaming videos from iTunes on your computer. This symptom could have a variety of causes, and I'd suggest the following initial troubleshooting steps.

Having trouble with internet connections using my Apple G5 OSX 10.4.11. Attempts to upgrade FireFox or Safari results in being incompatible with with this system. Hi Chuck,
TenFourFox is the most up to date browser for our PPCs, they even have G4 & G5 optimized versions...
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
I'd avoid vesrion 24 though, as it no longer supports plug-ins like Flash.
SeaMonkey seems pretty fast also, with many options...

Might also look into iCab & OmniWeb versions.
    Also...
The last really supported Flash for PPC was 10.1.102.64, but if it's for like Facebook or such, people have been fooling FB to think they have a leter version installed.

  • IMac troubles with AirPort connection

A few days ago — after I ugraded my iMac G5 to 10.4.10 — my iMac stopped communicating properly with my network. It will connect to the wireless network and the Internet, but it will no longer print wirelessly or stream music to either Express base station. I have one base station connected to my cable modem and a stereo and another connected to the printer and another stereo. My MacBook, also upgraded to 10.4.10, has no problems with wireless connectivity, except that it can no longer find my shared iTunes library from my iMac.
When I run the Airport Admin Utility program, the iMac cannot find either base station.
I've tried restoring the base stations to factory setting, and today I ran an archive and install on the iMac. It still has the problems.
I've heard a lot of people are having wireless problems with 10.4.10. Anybody figured this one out yet?
    Thanks for any ideas,
    Amy

every since I updated my 17" macbook pro
    I have the same problem.
my computer does not stay connected to my network (airport)
it keeps disconnecting and its annoying
some times it'll disconnect 2-3 time in one minute.
and my internet is much slower now.
I feel like restoring the older OS.
I know this because I also have a powerbook 15" connected to the same network and it was never updated so it runs smooth
does anyone know how to remedy this
    Thanks

Please do 2-3 SMC and PRAM resets back to back and retest. Also use new cables, they can go bad.

  • IMac suddenly keeps restarting with no warning!?

So last week my 27" iMac suddenly starts rebooting with no warning. Very frustrating. Have zapped PRAM and reset SMU... still happening. Can't track it to anything repeatable when it happens... any program, any time. Happens randomly... some days 3-4 times, some days 1. Have 4 GB of DDR2 SDRAM installed, but running full CS suite daily... perhaps bad RAM. Can it go bad? It's been fine for well over a year since new and it's been my experience that if RAM is bad, it's bad right away.
Should mention that I'm a daily Mac user for 20+ yrs (designer) and feel fairly comfortable diagnosing and solving any issues, but this one has me stumped.

I'm not sure about the original poster's "graphite" iMac, but if your "2nd gen" iMac refers to a "tray-loader" (CD goes in on a tray not a slot), you probably have the same problem I had... Later slot-loader iMacs many have similar problems, but I don't have first hand experience with them.
The most likely cause of the problem is a bad analog video board, specifically the part on it called the "flyback transformer." Do and Google search on "analog video flyback imac" and you should see some useful results.
When my iMac's board went bad, it stated to shut off for no reason. Eventually, it would not even start up. Actually, one other symptom is a "sparking" noise and momentary "jerking" of the screen image. For me, this started happening a few months before the shut off problem started. Unfortunately, replacing the part is somewhat difficult (requires almost full disassembly), and since you would likely be replacing the bad part with a used part from eBay, the replacement is likely to fail too. This is a very common "first failure" for these old iMacs. I think the iMac is designed to shut off or not turn on as a safety feature when the video board is bad. However, if you disconnect the internal video cable (you may have seen it when you upgraded memory), it may start up.
I turned my broken iMac into a "headless" machine by pulling out and reassembling the essential "non-CRT-related" parts on a shelf, connected to and above a very nice 19-inch CRT display (1280x960 at millions of colors). I'm using it now, and it works very well (Mac OS X 10.3.9).

  • New problem with wireless connection since 27th No...

Main desktop computer (windows xp) is connected directly to the internet via ethernet cable to BTHub3. No problem exists with this  connection.
We have previously had no problem connecting Tablet, laptop, and internet radio via wireless connection to our Hub. Problems now exist with wireless connection to all of these devices:-
    - When attempting to use any of the devices wirelessly, we are unable to obtain a connection to our Network (shown on the list of those available) - indicates -  "out of range" or "obtaining IP address" or "authenticating" or "network disabled - poor connection"
    - On occasions, the devices DO show that they are connected wirelessly but are unable to access the internet or use any programmes requiring an internet connection. Messages indicate - "no internet connection" or "connection timed out - retry" or "cannot access this webpage", even when we are in the same room as, and only a few feet away from the Hub.
    - One anomaly has occurred in that the internet radio did connect and function normally on 2 occasions recently , for a duration of a couple of hours, before loosing the connection. However, during this time, the other devices still refused to connect.
Measures we have undertaken to try to resolve the problem are :-
    - We have visited the "Wireless troubleshooting" part of the BT Helpdesk on several occasions, but had already tried the measures suggested here, including changing channels and hub reset.
    - We have spoken at length to the BT tech. helpline who have been unable to resolve the problem.
    - We have emailed BT Help and received a reply from India suggesting all the things that we have already tried (ie. a "stock answer").
    - We are not confident enough to access the Hub Manager as we feel feel this is beyond our capability.
We would be most grateful if someone could help us.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Wingman2, the first thing I would do is uninstall BTDesktop Help if you have it installed. It can cause more problems than it solves.
I would also suggest that the first thing to try is a factory reset of the homehub by pressing a pin into the recess button on the rear for about 20 seconds.
After you have done a reset if you still have problems, download, install and run inSSider. It will show you the wireless channels and which one your Homehub is on. You want to find the channel with the least congestion, ie. least number of users. Once you have that you need to change your homehub onto that channel.
See link for insider. Use the free version.
    http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
See link how to change channel on homehub
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14094
After that if you are still having problems you could try setting the home hub to b/g only instead of b/g/n. If one of your devices is not "n" capable it could help.

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

macbook, two and a half yrs old suddenly will not make wireless connection unless I am sitting directly in front of router. Any ideas?

Hi bluefatdogs2, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Probably a loose antenna cable, or the Airport card is dying. but I'd check the first, up under the Battery I think.

  • Trouble with wireless switch (rfkill) and wireless connectivity.

Hello, this is my first message in this community so please bare with me if this message should be in the newbie part; but I think it's better fitted here. Other than that, I'm glad to be here .
After quite some time in Fedora I'm coming to Arch and I must say I'm delighted, so I wanted to use it in my laptop too which was running an old version of Fedora.
The laptop is an Airis N930 (about 5 years old) with a RaLink RT2500 wireless adapter which worked well in Fedora 11 but I'm having some trouble getting it to work in Arch. The problem is that the connectivity switch in this laptop is kind of a software one: in Windows it's compulsory to have a program which came in the drivers disk so that when that button is pressed (think of it as another key in the keyboard) the wireless connectivity is turned on and the indicator led lights up.
For a Linux based system there's no such program (I think) but the behaviour seems to be different in newer and older systems (I've tried Fedora and Ubuntu recent live environments and the behaviour is the same as in Arch). In Fedora 11 it just works everything's unblocked by default, in Arch the hardware block seems to be on and I don't know of any way to unblock it:
    root@laptop ~ $ ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill
    root@laptop ~ $ rfkill list
    0: phy0: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: yes
    root@laptop ~ $ rfkill event unblock phy0
    1298671843.804446: idx 0 type 1 op 0 soft 0 hard 1
Pressing the wireless connectivity button doesn't produce any event... Does anyone know what can I try or how to remove the hard block? Could it be related to newer kernels?
Thank you very much for your time, any fixes, workarounds or ideas are welcomed.

Thank you for your tips lamegaptop. I already have linux-firmware installed and I'm using the supported kernel module for the card (it's a PCI one):
    06:01.0 Network controller: RaLink RT2500 802.11g (rev 01)
    Loaded modules for it:
    rt2500pci 12420 0
    rt2x00pci 3890 1 rt2500pci
    rt2x00lib 24866 2 rt2500pci,rt2x00pci
    mac80211 178404 2 rt2x00pci,rt2x00lib
    cfg80211 120337 2 rt2x00lib,mac80211
    eeprom_93cx6 1004 1 rt2500pci
Rfkill is installed too, the output I posted in the first post belongs to the commands I entered in the Arch system. In Fedora rfkill always reports both blocks to be off.
As the Fedora system is running a 2.6.30.10 kernel I tried to run some tests using the LTS kernel (it's a 2.6.32.X right now) in the Archboot live environment, the output of "rfkill list" changed as seen below:
    $ rfkill list
    0: phy0: Wireless LAN
    Soft blocked: no
    Hard blocked: no
    $ rfkill iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.
    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    Hard blocked: yes
    $ ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill
This behaviour was the same when running the default Arch kernel in Archboot. I'm thinking in extracting the kernel configuration from the Fedora kernel and use it to build a new one and see if it helps, although I'm not sure where the problem may be.

  • Troubles with wireless keyboard and iMac

My iMac won't recognize most of the keys on my wireless keyboard. Only several of the function keys seem to work. I've even tried replacing it with a new wireless keyboard, which worked to type in the pairing codes but also wouldn't enter any text into the password field. Since I'm stuck at the login screen and can't enter my password, I can't access any of the software troubleshooting programs that apple support recommends. I just ran an update several days ago. Could that have caused troubles?

    1) You need to go into more detail as to the trouble with the wireless keyboard
    2) Why can't you get a USB one? You can't order one online? Borrow one from someone?
Without some kind of text entry to enter the password this is going to be difficult.

  • Problems with wireless connection between new macbook and older imac

I have just bought a 2.0 ghz macbook core2duo and am unable to connect to my wireless internet network at home. My wireless connection is set up through the airport card in my 17" flat panel imac (i.e. I am using the imac as the internet base station). I had an old clam shell macbook (which just died hence the new macbook) and still have a 400 mhz graphite SE iMac which both connec(ed) to the network perfectly for years. But the new macbook will not connect. It will connect when connected via ethernet. The imac uses Tiger.
I have tried resetting the name of the network, using encryption and not using encryption, but nothing helps. The macbook appears to see the network (although no bars register in the airport connection icon) but I always get an error message when trying to connect.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

I am not actually using a router as I am using the airport card (non express i believe) in my iMac to send the wireless signal. My modem is Motorola but not sure which model. I have Comcast cable internet service
