IMac suddenly shutting down

Below is what my iMac tells me when it suddenly shuts down or freezes. Does this mean anything to anybody. Quite frustrating. I don't want to buy a new machine if there is some fix for this but I also cannot afford to be without my machine while it is in the shop for a look under the hood.
Any suggestions would most appreciated.

This line in the panic report:
System model name: iMac5,1
indicates that yours is an Intel imac and much newer than the ones covered in this forum. Any hardware issue you have may not affect the older machines. The labeling of this forum is prety vauge, so it's not your fault. Suggest you repost in the Intel iMAc forums here:

As the panic report suggests a hardware problem, the people in the other forum may see something familiar. You may also wish to review this excellent article on kernel panics, which is what you've experienced:

Which iMac..? Go to > How to identify iMac models
    1. Reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Reset the PRAM and NVRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

  • IMacs suddenly shuts down

    Hi,
Since a while my iMac suddenly shuts down and reboots.
It starts with a frame freeze, can't move the mouse cursor. After a few seconds my iMac shuts down.
I have no idea what the problem can be.

    Hey MagicMarcus,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with your iMac unexpectedly shutting down or restarting. The following resource provides some great information if this happens, along with potential resolution steps if it is a reoccurring issue:

  • IMac suddenly shuts down

My iMac 27" i7 / 16GB RAM / 256GB SSD is shutting down many times in an hour. All parts are original. I tried to apply all solutions from this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12158210 , no changes, it keeps switching off. Heat is within normal borders, problems happen even if the mac is cold (right after start). I thought it could be a damaged cord, so tried with an other cord - the same effect. What could it be?

    Hello b:
I do not have time to read that rather long thread and decide what you have tried to this point. If you will indicate what you have done to try to address the problem, there might be additional suggestions.
From your description, I think you may have a hardware problem.

  • Imac suddenly shut down and will not connect to internet

Hi, my imac running snow leapord was working fine. Then when I came to it a couple hours after using it it was shut down. When I restarted it would not connect safari or google chrome to internet. However, some websites it could access. All the login websites can still be used. My internet connection is good, I have another computer running on same modem and it works fine and internet provider has checked out the connection and it is good.

  • Another iMac Randomly Shutting Down!!

Hey Everyone. I'm new to the forums, though i've always used them as a resource over the years to learn more or troubleshoot issues. Hopefully, now, someone can help me with mine personally.. :-/
I have an intel 2.8gH Aluminum iMac that I purchased fall of 2007. Only now, almost 2 years later is it suddenly (just started yesterday) turning off randomly. Everytime it will not allow me to turn it back on until a minute or so has passed. I have reset the SMC as well as the PRAM several times. This afternoon, it is now to the point where I cannot even keep it running long enough to download an app to up the fan speeds. Although, I don't think it is overheating in the first place.
I'm really hoping it is just the power supply, as I've seen that be the fix for SOME iMacs i've found at other online forums. Though, the upper corner of my iMac is not hot or smelling burnt out at all. I have found more than several online forums of people complaining about their iMacs randomly shutting down, and am praying it is not the logic board, as that is a $900+ fix.
please, someone give me insight to how i can check if its the power supply or something else? I use this iMac for recording all of my music, editing video, and (of course) playing WoW lol. Currently using my 1st gen macbook.

I bought my iMac 20" in May 2006. I had been very impressed with it until one day I shut it down to move it to another room. I could not get it to turn back on. I had to leave it unplugged for a few hours. Since then it has started randomly shutting itself down, turning itself off and not starting up again until I unplug and leave it unplugged for a few hours. I had purchased the Apple Care? Extended Warranty, and the fault occurred during this three year period, though I failed to take the fault seriously and did not phone during the period. It was just after the three year warranty that I phoned Apple Care? about it and everyone I spoke to said they had not heard of this problem occurring. I wonder now, why the Apple Customer Service Team don't visit the discussions.apple.com where they will find quite a significant number of like problems occurring with the iMac sold in 2006.
My reason for paying the nearly triple price point for an Apple Computer was the quality of the build and my expectation that I would get far longer life out of my purchase. I don't like buying throw away products and I gladly save and wait longer to buy better quality products. Just as an example and point of reference. In 2000 I purchased a second hand Dell with 8GB HDD and 256Mb RAM. I paid $1000 for it and I gave it to my father when I got this iMac and he still has it running today. It has not had a single hardware issue in nine years. Good luck I suppose. However, after spending around $3000 on this iMac, and Apple now telling me the Logic Board is generically, non specifically 'failing', it goes against my pure desire for non disposable, throw away products to buy another Logic Board for AUS $1064. For one, I don't believe it has given me anywhere near the life that I expected from a product with such a high price point and solid reputation for quality, nor do I feel confidence in buying anything more 'Apple' after the dealings I have had with them over this problem. I am amazed that Apple would sell a 'failing' Computer to their customers and then expect that the customer will spend more money, considerably more, on a product that may be equally faulty and that they will not stand behind either.

  • IMac G5 shuts down

    Hi,
I have a problem similar to this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2029920&tstart=0.
That is, the iMac starts up, then works for some hours, then suddenly shuts down. Starting it up it works, then shuts down again. Doing it again, it shuts down in less and less time, until I... quit trying!
I gave the mac to 2 different service centers, but they didn't solve anything.
The first one, i suppose, just keep it running for some time, then they said they could find anything.
The second one went a step further: they kept the mac for TEN MONTHS (in the meantime I bought a new one), then gave it back to me saying "now it's ok, there was some trouble with the logic"...
Logically, the machine died the second morning I've been using it.
    And:
    - I tried it on different electric socket
    - A new OS X has been installed
    - The trouble is not caused (apparently) by a specific application
Tomorrow I will try a third service centre, but I would really appreciate some advice.
    Luca Lazzari

The best advice i can give you is to test the iMac in the shop before you take it home. Make sure you turn it on and off a couple of times right in the shop, and run some CPU intensive applications as well.
If they changed the logic board, it should still be under warranty. Hold their feet to the fire (politely) and insist on knowing exactly what they did and why it still doesn't work.
Let us know how you make out,

  • IMac just shuts down during iDVD build

*4 week old 20 inch iMac just shuts down during iDVD build of a dvd. Its really weird, because it is rendering and encoding and all of a sudden it just shuts down without a know. Then when I turn it back on it ejects the blank dvd out and starts. I had my SuperDrive replaced also like 2 days ago from the apple store. I have pasted the system.log if that helps?*

most likely caused by overheating due to video encoding increasing cpu usage (system freezing and shutdowns is a problem with older intel imacs). monitor your internal temps using an app like istat. temporary workaround is to use an fan control app like imacfancontrol and increase the cpu fan speeds. but this does not actually fix the problem which may arise more periodically as the system gets older.

  • Imac g5 shutting down right after startup

My computer had until today been operating perfectly. When I came into my office it was shut down ( I usually leave it on all the time). After restarting, I worked for about five minutes and then it suddenly shut down. The same thing recurred after 5 or 6 restarts before I gave up. Any suggestions? I assume this is an overheating or power supply issue.

This is the wrong forum for this topic, This is a forum for the new Intel iMacs.

  • Sudden shut down (not covered by Extended Repair Program)

I started having problems with sudden shut downs on my 17" iMac G5 1.9GHz lately (actually problem started after upgrading to Mac OS 10.4.8 this week): the computer will go dark like with a power outage - sometimes while I am working on something, other times while it is just idle.
I have researched the discussion board and found that earlier iMacs seem to have a known power problem, but have not found anything on my generation iMac so far (serial # W8547***).
I have tried all suggestions - including resetting SMU & PRAM, checked power lines, downloaded the new Security Update etc - nothing seems to do the trick. I hooked up an external harddrive last night to back up data - five tries each failed, because computer shuts down at some point or the other.
System log lists shutdown causes 2 & -110...

    Hi, J & F.
I am sure you have searched no only the forum, but also the support pages of apple.
If i understand you right, it happend EXACTLY after the update of the OSX. It looks tgo me as if something went wrong in this process. I would try:
    a) to start up in "single user mode" - this checks whether it is something else than the bare operating system; It would give you the indication that your machine is, hardware-wise, still fine. This would eliminate the Powersuplly problem. However, it does not isolate the powersupply as faultive in case that this step doesn't work!
    b) to start up in "Target disk mode" - to see whether you can get anything reasonable done. this helps you to see whether the disk can be used... nothing more.
The real solution probably comes only by reinstalling the original software from your install disk. Be sure that you have a backup of all your files!
I would try and "Archive and Install" , but do , directly after this, a "Repair permissions". If this doesn't help, i would go through an "ERASE and INSTALL". In both cases, don't upgrade the lates OSX versions, stay with the one from your install disk. only, if everything works, go and update OSX.
Hope this helps - please, post back.

No data is lost due to resetting the SMC.
But after i unplug the charger it suddently shut down again
The problem may be the adapter. Try here > Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters
Hopefully your important files are backed up just in case.

  • My MacBook suddenly shut down and won't turn back on - how do I get it to turn back on?

My MacBook suddenly shut down after freezing up and I cannot get it to turn back on again.  I tried the suggestions in the manual and none of them worked to turn it back on. Is there something I am not doing correctly?  The little green light on the charger connector is green but not as bright as normal, it was charged by over 70% before it shut down, so I do not think it is a battery problem.  Is there anything I can do to turn it back on?  Thank you for any help given, I really appreciate it.

If it won't bong, then try an SMC reset.
