IMac (suddenly) won't mount anything

Hi. My iMac G3 has suddenly stopped recognizing external devices. It won't mount my iPod or Lacie external hard disk via Firewire or my Zip drive via USB. All the devices turn on, start spinning, etc. when plugged in, but the iMac doesn't know that they are there. My last software update was last month and this problem started in the last couple days.
The only thing I can think of is that the iMac was accidentally unplugged while running the other day. No external devices were mounted at the time. The machine started right back up when I replugged it, which was a great relief because when this happened twice before it was hours before I could turn it back on. (the plug at the back of this iMac falls out too easily imho)
I already tried repairing my disk permissions, but that did not help.
I'd sure appreciate any help. Thanks.

Well, good grief, nevermind. I got up this morning and—viola—the problem had fixed itself.

  • Lacie external hard drive suddenly won't mount on iMac 27"

Help! My back up Lacie suddenly won't mount. It shows up on my disk utility (but faded) and I tried to repair it with no benefit. I thought it might be a Lion problem, but my other Lacie is working fine. I tried using a different USB cable and unplugging everything, rebooting etc. Any help would be much appreciated.

There may be hardware problem with the drive. However you can try resetting the SMC. Don't be afraid to reset it 2-3x if the first time doesn't work.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • External hard drive suddenly won't mount

Although I've not had a problem with this drive in the past, it all of a sudden won't mount. It has all my music on and stalled while I was using iTunes, the timer wheel came up and was still the same after 20 minutes so I closed down. Now the drive won't mount at all so I can't even try repairing the disk. I've tried swapping from firewire to USB cables and also going through a hub, neither have worked.
It's a Lacie and the power light stays continuously orange on it and it feels like it's working overtime.
    PLEASE HELP!

A little bit more on this... I looked at the instructions for the Lacie and it said that some smaller laptops may require a power cable via a USB port and back into the Lacie, which now works but I'm wondering why this has happened all of a sudden and can I rectify it??
I've deleted a load of stuff off my ibook hard drive, like photos etc, thinking that would help but it hasn't. Plus, I've recently installed an extra 1gb power card.
What can I do to avoid having to plug all these peripherals in to access my music?

  • LaCie External Harddrive suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800

My LaCie External d2 Quadra suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800, but will mount via USB 2.0.
    I have:
Tested the harddrive on another computer and it works fine via firewire.
Shut down and re-boot. It had no effect.
    Updated all software.
Note: My MBP will not boot if the Firewire 800 cable is connected.

I've had a whole heap of strife with my two macally enclosures over FW. I've only got them working twice together, regardless of jumper settings on the harddrives. I can plug either in fine, but if I use both together, my mac shuts down and refuses to boot. One drive is bus powered, the other is powered via the mains
    I wish you luck

  • Drive Suddenly Won't Mount

I've had a 500GB Seagate external drive connected via firewire for my Time Machine for awhile now. I've used time machine with it to recover files, it always mounted and ejected fine, never had any problems, etc.
Today, all of a sudden, it won't mount. The weird part is the drive is operating. Something is writing to it - it's write light is blinking and I can hear it working. Still won't mount. I tried it on a different mac, same deal. It shows up in Disk Utility, but all of the buttons are grayed out. I can't verify or repair it. When I try to erase the drive via Disk Utility, it says it failed because "Resource Busy". Time machine is not writing to it. What the **** could be writing to it without me knowing?!
    Anyone experience this before?

For some reason, with my WD 160GB drive, when I plug it in and it turns on, but it never mounts. I have to go into disk utility and wait, and wait, and wait, until it shows up in disk utility (a few minutes) then I have to select the drive and click on mount. It started doing this within the past few months. I have no idea why, but it's a pain.

  • External hard drive suddenly won't mount, but shows in Disk Utility.

Running OS 10.6.8... Disk Utility sees it and there's no issues when verified or repaired.  The partition is grayed out and won't mount through Disk Utility.  I've also tried mounting via Terminal, but same result.  I've connected other drives, so I know it's not the wires or ports.  When I turn the power on, it spins up and seems to be working properly.  I don't have another mac to test it on.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You don't have a PowerMac if you have a Mac Pro.  You don't have a PowerMac if you have Mac OS X 10.6.  PowerMac is the name for the desktop professional Macs prior to mid-2006.   Two possibilities, the drive is dead, or the drive has a bad directory.   For a fee you can isolate either on my FAQ*:

  • External Backup Disk Suddenly Won't Mount...

Tried to shut down, restart and repair the disk with Disk Utility...but it won't mount. Any suggestions? It's a WD 500GB external backup disk...I use it for Time Machine.
    Thanks!

The only other thing that I can suggest at this point is to turn Time Machine off and try reseting the partition map scheme +(GUID Partition Table)+ and the format +(Mac OS Extended)+ again to see if it repairs the drive. Unfortunately that will erase all of your previous TM backups, but might get the drive working correctly again. Then if and when you get the drive working correctly go to the Time Machine Preference and reselect the drive to Use for Backup.

  • Photosmart 7550 suddenly won't print anything but scanned images?

    Hi all,
I've had this printer for a while and have had zero problems with it, and I don't think there's one now. More likely a setting I can't find. I just scanned a bunch of stuff that printed up just fine, but text documents, (I use Open Office) and PDF docs will not. I've tested this out and haven't been able to discover what I've done wrong. I can print anything that I've scanned (scanned docs are displayed by Windows Photo Gallery), but no ODT (Open Office) or PDF (Adobe Acrobat). Won't print from e-mail, either. It was all working fine the last time I printed any ODT or PDF, but it has been a couple of months for those, though I was printing e-mails as recently as last week. Also, when I send the command to print, I see the status bar spooling the pages to print, but the printer never reacts. Then when I double click the printer icon in the toolbar, the printer status window that opens shows "printing", but then suddenly it says "deleting" and it disappears and there are no jobs pending.
I'm using Windows Vista 32-bit. Drivers are up-to-date.
    Can anyone help?

  • IMac G5 won't mount commercial DVDs

I have a 1-year old iMac G5 that suddenly stopped mounting commercial DVDs (e.g., movies). DVDs and CDs containing software programs mount fine, as do unformatted DVDs for burning. But not movie DVDs. My software is up to date, including latest security upgrades (so I'm kind of suspecting the latter as a possible cause for the problem). But have others seen this or worked out solutions?

Mine has done this on occasion.
After ejecting a few times/restarting, it works.
I can't get it to do it consistently though so I can't troubleshoot it.

  • My WD 500 GB Ext. Hard drive suddenly won't mount

    Hey guys,
I use a WD mybook 500 GB HD through Firewire 800 on My iMac. It is used solely as my Scratch disk for FCP. Suddenly today when i turn on the computer it dosent mount on the desktop along with the MacHD. I ve tried all the repairing permissions, Disk utility. Ive gotten so frustrated i went out and bought another HD, an Iomega. Its not showing up either. I now think its something in the Computer. I have been using the MyBook for about a year now with no problems. Side note...i tried downloading the 10.5.6 update. it hung up while "configuring Installation" Things seem to be going wrong after that. I have also already tried booting up with the Leopard disk into first aid. That didn't help either.
    Any suggestions
    Thanks Everyone,
    Steve

the most important lesson here is that EVERY DRIVE WILL FAIL. It's the nature of the universe. Some drives will fail sooner than others, some drives will give signs that they are beginning to fail, while others will suddenly die a quick death. Do not assume that because you buy one of the brand drives that Jerry recommends that the drive will not fail, although they are definitely more dependable. I've had two drives from one of the brands Jerry mentions fail almost immediately after purchase.
You need to have a workflow that allows you to continue working when you have a drive failure. Make sure all material on video tape is captured with device control, with "abort capture on dropped frames" and "make new clip on timecode break" enabled in your preferences. This will allow you to recapture if necessary. Any files that do not originate in this manner need to be backed up (and even that can be problematic).
Also, I highly recommend you purchase diskwarrior. It's a disk repair program that does one thing and one thing only: repairs the directory structure of a drive. It will repair drives that the disk utility will not fix.

  • External Hard Drive Suddenly won't mount except if connected via keyboard

Hi there guys. I have a generic USB 2.0 Hard drive enclosure that I've been using successfully with my Macs. Today it doesn't work, on any of them.
I connect it via USB to the back of my iMac, and it will not mount. I checked system information, and it finds: (under USB)
    - USB 2.0 Storage Device
    And it knows this:
    USB 2.0 Storage Device:
    Version: 1.03
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Product ID: 0x5621
    Serial Number: 00042222200000157768
    Vendor ID: 0x0402
If I plug the hard drive in through my Apple keyboard, it mounts fine, but is SUPER slow, like completely unusable. However in this case, system information says:
    USB 2.0 Storage Device:
    Capacity: 189.92 GB
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: Yes
    BSD Name: disk1
    Version: 1.03
    Bus Power (mA): 100
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    OS9 Drivers: No
    Product ID: 0x5621
    Serial Number: 00042222200000157768
    S.M.A.R.T. status: Not Supported
    Vendor ID: 0x0402
    Volumes:
    Backup Disk:
    Capacity: 189.8 GB
    Available: 44.78 GB
    Writable: Yes
    File System: Journaled HFS+
    BSD Name: disk1s3
    Mount Point: /Volumes/Backup Disk
So.. yeah. I've got important data on this drive, and I seriously have no idea what to do. I've read a few forum posts around the web and have seen similar problems but not solutions posted. Can anyone help?
    What should I try?
    -Brian

  • Laptop suddenly won't save anything?

My laptop periodically suddenly stops allowing me to save.  Pages will stop autosaving, Mail won't let me save drafts, I can't take screenshots, and I can't copy files, for example.  Rebooting fixes it (why would rebooting change permissions?) but it happens again soon.  When it happens, I can cut and paste from a document to a fresh email and mail myself what I'm working on (usually in Pages), but I can't download the new email till after I've rebooted.
I recently downloaded the newest EndNote, but the problem occurs even when EndNote isn't running (although I run the plugin, but that has been installed for years.)
I'd appreciate any insight into what is going on.  I've tried repairing permissions via disk utility, but since they seem to be dynamically changing, that isn't working.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • I7 Imac suddenly won't turn on, please HELP!!!

I've had my new i7 for about 2 weeks now with absolutely no issues til today. Had a gfi outlet trip as my imac is connected to a ups surge protector, now computer screen won't come on, so i'm not sure if the computer is actually running. I can here the hard drive start up then nothing. All my other electronics on the surge protector is fine. Talked to apple and they wanted me to bring it to a genius bar and I told them its to far away, and its brand new, I wanted a replacement and they agreed. Anyone have feedback as to the problem. I know others have had power start up issues, any ideas out there.

    49erDan,
I seem to be in the same boat. We had a huge electrical storm come through today very close to the house and I thought that I'd do the right thing and unplug the computers from the wall socket just to be safe. Once the storm had past, I went to turn the computer back on and I got a few quiet clicks and that was it. I've tried to reset the PRAM and the SMC to no avail. So I fear that you and are in for a replacement as per Dennis's comments. Apple help is off for the weekend so I will call them tomorrow to see if there are any other secrets that can get it working, but I don't like our chances.
Unless someone else knows of something that can help?
    I'll keep you posted,
    Jkero
